I say YES to the bright coloured D locks
Most valuable motorcycle content on the web. Every. Single. Time.
Thanks VERY much! All the best, John
And remember boys & girls, always park your bike next to the Panigale, that way your bike will still be there when you get back (unless yours is also a Panigale).
A Panigale with no locks.😂
I got a Panigale last week. Happy to be doing my bit for the community..!
@@allanyeates then you have no reason watching this video.
@@allanyeates thanks mate, hope you'll understand if I have to move it down the street a bit so it's next to mine 😉
@@allanyeateswhere is it parked
.. Asking for a friend who would like to be your parking buddy loool😂
I would like to see more lock carrying solutions with these locks.
100% agree. I have been looking for something that is a good enough to deter the casual toerags when I stop for a brew without having to wear a hole in my pannier or risk carrying something pointy and hard on my body. Something i can attach to the bike until needed. Gone are the days when I used to wrap a lock in waterproof overtrousers then stuff it under my seat. These days you would struggle to get a pack of rizlas under the seat.
Agreed, it might be worth checking out a large (pedal) bike shop, they have a lot of clamps etc designed for or sold with locks, though whether they're strong enough for motorcycle use is up to you to decide. In the meantime at least use something like a disc lock.
You deserve a PhD in motorcycle security
Ha, thanks! All I'm doing is breaking things, and working with proper experts.
But he needs to study communication.
Wow, just wow. Brilliant, informative and captivating. THIS is the benchmark for motorcycle content, keep up the fantastic work.
Thank you SO much! All the best, John
The quality of the videos you make is completely unparalleled - comprehensive, well researched, information dense and very clearly communicated. If you don't already have a personal channel, and Bennett's don't have contract stipulations against it, I would highly encourage you to consider the possibility.
You could talk about things more informally or from an angle that doesn't make sense here, make some longer form videos (you talk to an incredible number of interesting people, I'd be very interested in seeing podcasts or entire interviews) or cover things you've interested in which are only peripherally connected to motorcycles (or totally unrelated!). I think a podcast would even work well here, revzilla have shown the possibilities and I enjoy their work, but it would be great to get something from a different perspective.
Thanks so much, that's really kind of you. Time would be the problem - making videos is just a small part of my job, which means I have very little free time as it is! Cheers though!
Great review as always John. Please keep up the good work as we need this information.
Thanks so much! All the best, John
Superb content again John. Cheers.

Cracking video, appreciated as always, and the effort you've put in.... brilliant 👍🏻👍🏻

Another excellent production , well researched and presented. The depth and breadth of these productions is impressive.
Thanks so much! Hope it helps. All the best, John
Love the in-depth video and length, and the fact you have even more details on individual videos is amazing. I think motorcycle brands need to fix the bear basic steering locks for something more suitable, and harder to brake apart, like an alt key to lock the bike up via an underneath lock location.
John, a fantastic video and really appreciate the hard work. I have a Hiplok dx1000 on order. However as a result of your video I am now going to also order the ROADLOK disc lock as it’s a great idea and can use in conjunction with my existing disc lock. Keep up the great work.
Brilliant, thanks very much! You'll have a great combo there. All the best, John

Another great video John , love my Roadlok & easy to store the pin when out.
Top work John - plenty to think about right there.
Love these videos. Very helpful.
I remember a long, long time ago, I whinged that the videos were just a bit too long....... I'm glad you ignored me, as I've pretty much watched them all since (even if I do have to watch many of them in two sessions! 🤣). This one is worth every minute of it - excellent video!
Thanks! I do aim to make my videos 20 mins or less, and thought about breaking this into two, but I really wanted it to be as useful as possible and only managed to shave about 10% off my initial script. Cheers, John
Great video especially the section on Merseyside police where I’m from, just recently picked up my new bike so this is massively appreciated thanks for all your hard work John!

Absolutely fantastic review thank you for all your hard work on this and always 👍🏻 THE best & most thorough reviewer out there.

Some nice tips. I've got a regular disc lock (with a good size pin) that I use.
Bike theft isn't a big thing here and I only really lock it up with that disc lock when I'm far away from the bike for a longer period. I just have it on regular steer lock.
Granted there aren't many a times it's needed. I'm either riding it, having a quick stop or it's being stored in my garage or behind a locked fence. I don't commute as it's a pure hobby.
Ride safe!
Great vid, really helpful. My bike lives outside on the driveway as I don't have an alternative option currently so videos like this are very useful. The layered approach is the way to go seemingly. I've got 8 security devices on it, two of which are alarmed, & the others include a heavy duty chain, ground amchor & one of the grinder resistant D-locks you recommended. It's also covered & on CCTV. I used to have sleepless nights about it but it's obviously insured & I can't do much more than I have so I don't worry about it anymore. It changes nothing & can really ruin the pleasure of having a bike if you think too much about it.
You're doing a great job, so please try to enjoy yourself with it now. Nothing's unbeatable, but it sounds like you've done all you can. Cheers, John
Just to say Don't get complacent I had my Tracer 900 taken from the drive last August. Disc lock and alarm and cover on but I couldn't be arsed after a long and stressful day to fetch out the big chain. Woke up and Gone!! never heard a thing. Damp cloth wrapped over disc alarm and on a trolley then van.... Bstrds!!
@@barrydaly7174 Really sorry to hear that. Bastards as you say & you're right. You can't be complacent or take anything for granted. You've got to lock it up every time like it's the first time as those scumbags are always lurking waiting for a slip up.
This is by far the best security video on UA-cam. You should make more of the uses for ebikes as well. eCargo and eMTBs are worth thousands.
Thanks! This applies just as much to eBikes, so hopefully it'll help there too. Cheers, John
@@bennettsbikesocialabsolutely John. And I forgot to say, thanks for highlighting Pragmasis - they are a great UK business and really setting the standard. Paul

Cracking reviews and roundup, just watched the whole thing and taken notes!
Thanks so much! Hope it helped. All the best, John
Great video and hopefully it reaches the target audience! From experience the MET are not interested in air tags or basic consumer tracking. But did express interest in approved and recognised tracking systems. Carrying a lightweight chain and finding something to lock the bike to is pretty difficult especially especially in the busy cities. I've opted for a lightweight packable cover, dlock, alarm disc lock and rely on the movement detection text alerts.
Very informative content, thank you John

Thank you. Excellent info. Also been with Bennetts and have always had very competitive quotes.
That's great to hear, thank you! All the best, John
Great review John I did look at the DX1000 but it’s still preorder only at the moment so bought the X3 instead. I live in a very rural area low population and low crime so use the locks more away from home. At home have possibly best security in two German Shepherds one does not take well to strangers and both have run of the house and garage.
Still a great lock, and sounds like you have some good guards there! Cheers, John
Dogs are the BEST !!!
This vid was pretty darn good.
Thank you! 👍
Thanks! All the best, John
I actually leave my bike uncovered in my town as rented flat - it’s next to a pub and a busy bus stop. It has obvious multiple heavy duty security on it, and hidden devices. But the benefit of uncovered is every local knows me - all the shops, pubs, and I’ve even befriended the homeless who all watch it for me. I went out one evening to tinker with something on it and a drunk mob immediately came out of the pub to challenge me as I’d a hood up 😂. So befriend your neighbours and watch their back, don’t be antisocial, be courteous and it’ll pay dividends! If I move I’ll buy a cover for sure.
That's the issue here. While videos like this is appreciated, high point of hypocrisy is Met's advice how to keep your bike safe. Instead of police and judicial system doing what they are supposed to do to keep us safe.
This has to be one of the best MC channels on YT, and John the most thorough equipment reviewer, well, anywhere! I get the impression bike theft in the UK is a more serious problem than here in the states. I have no data to back that up, so could be wrong. Regardless, I appreciate yet another exhaustively researched and well-executed review!
Thanks so much! All the best, John
Brilliant video and explanation, thank you for giving us such good and honest advice, I really appreciate the time and effort you give to help us protect our babies 👏❤

R1200GSA: stolen from a garage and found back by the Rotterdam Police within 1,5 hours thanks to MoniMoto. Disk brake was cut to steal it. Changes since then: Abus alarm disk lock on left side, RoadLok on right side and a thick chain at the rear attached to a heavy object. Sadly it takes now 5 minutes to get the bike out, as also a scooter is parked in front of the GSA.
It's the price/time we pay.
As long as it works. (Been there done that)
- I think one would just pull/drag the scooter out of the way to get access to your GS.
Regards.
John, you’re a bloody legend for these videos. I mean that, you’re really doing great work.
My Abus disc lock is very bright yellow, perfect. Even has a little LED in the key which is brilliant. The Hiplock D1000 is black which is a bit, well, silly. I want to see the lock and I want the thieves to see it too and move on. I will say that the hiplock key doesn’t take up as much space on the key ring. No free lunch I guess.
Those Abus keys are cool, but yeah, I prefer a slim metal-only key, so it'll fit with my others. Cheers! John
But why would u want the thieves to notice your bike even more with a bright yellow lock? You want your bike to blend in and ignored.
@@steve00alt70 It’s big, bright blue and doesn’t blend in very well. I want them to see that there’s easier pickings somewhere else. I mostly want to remind myself that there’s a lock on the wheel on those dim mornings when the coffee hasn’t done its job.
@@steve00alt70I think the scenario where someone only notices a bike because it has a yellow disc lock on is extremely unlikely, that's the sort of detail which is usually only noticeable when you start focusing on the bigger object to start with.
Great vid👍👍
Brilliant, what with a high level of bike theft in my county, this is a well received and comprehensive advice source you can get.
Thanks! Hope it helps. All the best, John
I use an Abus D lock on my VTR. I use it through the wheel and around both fork legs. It's designed for this and Honda were good enough to provide a dedicated place to store it under the seat. It fits around the forks with no free play.
Perfect!
Great informative video like all your videos,
All bike security locks should have bright colours
Agreed! Warn them, remind us! Cheers, John
Great video as always John, definitely gave me some ideas.
I always layer up my security, 3 chains with padlocks, linked together with a massive Abus U-lock, front & rear and ground anchors.
Still had some failed attempts at theft from my own property.
Pisses me off that insurance companies don't recognise Monimoto
It's frustrating, but the reason will be that it's self-fit. However, I am trying to change things...
@@bennettsbikesocial always appreciate your hard work John 👍
WOW !!! What bike do you have please?
Regards.
Your neighbours must love you John 😂 great work, you made me interested in locks
Ha! They're very tolerant. Cheers, John
Thanks for the hard work in putting this together - Great job. I often ride with with my partner and we leave the bikes for a couple of hours - Would a D-lock like the DX1000 be large enough to lock together the 2 front wheels?
I just tried it, and no, I'm afraid not. Maybe over the cast spokes but it'll depend on the bikes. You could link two DX1000s together, if you an afford it.
@4:47 I could immediately tell that was filmed in Dublin. It’s a huge issue now in Ireland especially after one police officer is under investigation for manslaughter after a chase on the motorway where the thieves went riding against traffic then crashed and died. So Garda was instructed not to follow if thieves were able to start the bike and ride it without a helmet.
My bike got damaged after someone tried to steal it from the underground parking, the ignition switch, steering lock and immobiliser ring were destroyed but they gave up (not sure why). The mechanic who fixed the bike afterwards advised me to not use the steering lock anymore because next time at least I avoid getting the handlebar and the frame getting damaged again. I have two locks and fitted an alarm 🤞
Wtf, how it's possible? Criminals are protected nowadays better than law abiding citizens
Great review as always.
No mention of throttle locks. I use a Knox alarmed one on my bike.
Are they not a recognised device, or not thought of being very good?
I've just included the things that I trust most here, but I should have mentioned them, sorry! Here's a review of one: www.bennetts.co.uk/bikesocial/reviews/products/security/scooter-security-and-disc-locks/datatool-croc-lock-review Cheers, John
Thanks - another well considered and objective video. No interest in the outcome, just guided by access to real-word intel. Good work Sir!
Thanks very much! Cheers, John
I bet your neighbours love you with all that angle grinding. :)
Bikes can be bought where the ignition key is matched to the panniers - I'd like to see a collaboration with the manufacturers and lock makers for more one-key convenience.
Edit: Great vid btw! With my targeted advertising trying to persuade me to get a brake lever lock it's good to see some security that'll survive a bleed nipple getting opened!
i got a little 125 yam ybr on the road, fitted a monster plus d-lock on the disc. noticed scuff marks on the lock and the end cap fell off... Needless to say, also went and got a chain/padlock after that.
Great to hear it did its job! Cheers, John

@@bennettsbikesocial yeah the bike lot seem to be decent. The rest I’ll not comment about.
I’ve got my security sorted for this year though. In bits in the dining room 🤣.

Great Help 🙏🫡🔥👏
Thank you John. You're doing a great service to us.
Good to know about Roadlok. Never heard of it, but by the looks I'm wondering why I haven't seen these type of locks before. Just needs a clever way to bolt it. Maybe manufactures could make an integrated type. And I mean casted as part of it, not just bolted on by the manufacturer. Definitely would make sense on the adv bikes. Maybe offer it as an option to have an integrated.
Thanks very much! Yeah - it took me a while to find out about it, and I didn't expect it to be all that great, but it turned out to be excellent. Cheers, John
I’d never heard of it and it looks a great way of saving having to carry a second lock. Went to the website within an hour of you posting the vid and they are all sold out!
@@ck166666 Blimey! To be fair, they may well have been out or low already. Hope they get them back in soon. Cheers, John
It's a great bit of kit. You MUST look after it though and rinse and lube with graphite powder regularly. If you ride in the winter, rinse it with cold water after every ride and blow dry the water out. Take the barrel out every six months and give it a thorough cleaning and lube.
@@thewoodster8607 thanks - that’s great advice

Id love to use the hiplok but ive no storage on my bike and dont want a top box. Would he great if hiplok made a cary case that would easily attach.
Have the road lock on my ktm 1290 gt great bit of kit.
Thank you for all the effort you've put into this. I have an abus wba 100 ground anchor. Now I know it's not very good. I also have a kryptonite M18 d lock and it wasn't even listed. Bummer. I'll try and replace it with the litelok x3. Thanks for explaining it needs to go around the tyre. I never thought about that but such a good point. Was wondering about getting a second tracker to go alongside bike trac. And then putting it where it cm be found. Wonder if that could makes thieves stop looking for a second one. Also, do you know where they are put? Not asking to mention but got example. I have a 1200GS and bmw fitted it. If a thief have stolen such a bike before and located the tracker. I assume on my GS it will be in the same place..Hence I was wondering if I should try and fool them by putting another one on it.
I genuinely don't know where they're fitted on BMWs (though I could take a guess). The main thing is that if you can't find it, with plenty of time nosing around, then it must have been tucked well out of the way. You could fit something a little more obvious if you want, but it sounds like you're considering your security really well. Cheers, John
Super helpful, but please edit down the loud CrimeWatch style intermission music.
Following your great video I was interested in the 13mm X 1.2m noose chain from Pragmasis, unfortunately I could not find the chain on their website, I rang them (today 03/05/24) and they informed me that they have stopped making the noose chains due to escalating prices and poor availability from their French supplier. I would be interested to know which alternative noose chains Bennetts or subscribers would recommend, thanks ?
I chuckled when I saw the chain that looked like it had been borrowed from a ship anchor.
Disc lock: Road lock
D-lock: HiplockDX1000
Tracker: MoniMoto
Chain: Pragmasis Super Duper Anti-pinchman?
Thanks John for this very informative episode! I'm interested in the Roadlok Disc Lock. Do you know if the base that mounts to the brake is made from aluminum or steel? I couldn't find that info on their website.
It's aluminium - I didn't think it'd stand up to attack as well as it does, but it's very impressive. Cheers, John
@@bennettsbikesocial Interesting. That is impressive then!
I know this is a fringe situation but, in an underground private garage, 2 chains and 1 disk lock where not enough to stop a ducati desmosedici rr from being taken. So your not wrong that nothing will stop the most determined.
''Thou shalt NOT steal''. Ex.20 (KJV version)
(The word of Almighty God)
Alarm your shed or garage so it's making a lot of noise before they have a chance to attack your bike security make sure access to the alarm sounder is not easy.
So TRUE.
Please do a super quick video (less than a minute to keep it easy for you!) showing us how you have your motorcycles locked up in your garage. That's all I need before I get my new BMW G310GS. K.I.S.S!
Work it out Robert!!!
THINK !
Do what you have to and can do. What is your budget? How far do you want to go??? How much security do YOU want?
I suggest lock up your bike with a QUALITY lock n chain ($$$$$$$), chained to SOMETHING. (So he/they cannot carry/lift your bike away) (This QUALITY lock n chain WILL last you for the rest of your life)
This way the thief MUST cut your chain or lock (and make NOISE) to access your steering locked bike. (Rear and Front lock n chain perhaps??)
For me, this will be the BARE MINIMUM. The BARE MINIMUM.
If possible, chain your bike to a Fixed point, to another bike, garage frame, trailer, tow bar, or whatever, etc, etc, etc.
All the very best.
Regards.
Thanks for the comment TPV! I did get a decent chain and lock (KOHLBURG 13 chain and lock) that is front-wheel attached to a bollard and the base of my water heater in the garage. Let's see them move that bad-boy! Plus, I am using a Hiplock DX1000 in the rear wheel. I beefed up the man-door going into my garage, plus I have motion detectors in the garage too. It may be overkill at this point, but I sleep better at night knowing I won't be in that percentage of bike thefts. Next on Amazon: an NRA sticker on the outside of the garage man door... Go ahead, make my day - Dirty Harry :)

I was only thinking this morning, when I leave home and park my (light 2024 KTM 390) and DON'T chain it to a Fixed object (example, pole) 'they' could EASILY just lift it up and throw the bike into the rear of the ute/pick-up/trailer and drive away. Gone in 8 seconds!!!

Here's hoping they're able to sort them as they're an excellent bit of kit
I think I am going to get a hiplock now, use both my disc lock and the hiplock
Good call! Cheers, John
Everyone only seems to test cut the loop section but i want to see the lock cut off. Is it the same material? I don't think it is
Have a look at the written reviews as of course I cut the body of the lock too. And yes, the Hiploks, Liteloks and Abus use the same angle-grinder-resustant materials in the bodies as in their shackles.
My Rocket 3R was stolen last night. Cut chain and pushed into a van. Biketrac called straight away and I confirmed that the bike was missing. I call the police and got a report number and supplied Biketrac with the info. Biketrac liaised with the police and in 30 mins I was called by the police and collected the bike. Great investment! I am now ordering 2 of the Dx1000 after watching this so when they return the thieves can “do one”….
Sorry to hear that, but really glad you got it back okay. Cheers, John
Should you tell your insurer what security youre using?
Which would be a better way to use the D lock.
-over the front or rear wheel.
Or
-through the double disks of a front wheel?
I'd say over the front wheel is best. Cheers, John
@@bennettsbikesocial yh I thought soo as I believe it would require more cuttinh to break it free as it has a bigger surface area to to break away from.
Thank you john
BIKE TEFT iin Ireland is trough the roof and the Guardi do nothing to prevent it.
I've gotten on my bike and fired it up before remembering my disc lock but thankfully I've never tried to ride it
Nice one! I have ridden off... and it cost me! Cheers, John
Great review of security products. I love the idea of the light weight Pragmasis 11mm noise end chain, however I've searched to buy one and they don't seem to be available. Anyone know a supplier, they are not listed on the Pragmasis website. Thanks in anticipation.
Noose end chain
Sadly they seem to have stopped doing them, but give them a call in case they have any remaining.
Soon Mul-T-Lock and I will be coming up with a material that can stop grinders no matter what. It will be like trying to cut metal with a paper knife. The primary target is high security doors, then it's going to take more time and engineering to implement it on portable security.
Look forward to seeing that!
Any opinions on the Squire D16?
I'm sure I once saw a clip of you trying to get into the guardsman barrier, but never saw the full video. I thought it might be in this test. They have gone bust now which is annoying! But did you test this?
Yeah, it's a real shame. Here's the review: www.bennetts.co.uk/bikesocial/reviews/products/security/garage-and-home-security/guardsman-security-barrier-review-destruction-test
Where there is specific public motorcycle parking, it would be nice if councils could provide bollards, perhaps with a hole through big enough to take a chain, or even simple railings, sturdy enough to waste thieves time (Not tube or pipe)
Great video, would be good if the companies, that don't use bright colours, listened and made their locks more visible
Black looks cool, but I'd rather be shouting about it. Cheers, John
Very comprehensive and well structured video. I hope you are getting a pay rise. :) I think you've covered all the bases. You must be as frustrated as me though when you add the policing component. As you point out, the police have limited resources and unlimited demand. The public would take a dim view if motorcycle crime was prioritised over violent crime (knife, gun etc) and aggravted burglary and anti-social behaviour where people actually get hurt. And yet, there are still so many negative voices that won't have anything to do with the police because "what's the point, they don't do anything anyway?"
That aside, I think your neighbours deserve a medal. I know how noisy angle grinders are and how do they know you're not actually getting burgled instead of testing equipment?
Thanks for pulling it all together. While I appreciate the immersive reviews on the individual security devices, it's great to have an overview of the choices depending on your circumstances. Funnily enough, it never occurred to me that chains could be tampered with when left at a "usual" parking spot. I don't leave anything behind but lots of people at the bike/motorcycle parking sheds do and they may think twice about continuing to do so after watching your video. All in all, well done, once again. :) Love the opening line btw.
Thanks very much! Luckily my neighbours are very understanding (or a bit deaf)! Cheers, John
Or you could ride a bike no one wants like a Versys 650, a Yamaha Nikken, or any AMF era Harley Davidson lol!
Hahahahahahahahahaha
I saw a video where a man’s bike was written off as someone broke the steering lock in seconds and damaged the frame head. The bike was quickly recovered but the damage was done. He was advised in future not to use the steering lock
