Do you think the D Lock will fit on the rear wheel of a 2002 Fazer 600? 😂 Looking for security and thinking of getting a D lock to pair with using a Oxford Boss lock for my front disc and whatever chain I can fit in the back of the bike with the Boss lock then have a D lock for when I have to park anywhere for a couple hours and take it in a small backpack 🤔
@bennettsbikesocial I'm thinking if I can use the Boss lock with a chain till I get a D lock for the rear wheel at which point I would put the chain through a structural point and the D lock but for using chain with the Boss lock I can wrap a chain around tyre, through spoke and attach to the Boss lock as it goes through the brake disk. Later point I can use the D lock and chain for the rear and alarm on the front. Maximising the security since its my first 600c and I want to look after it 🤭 Should be a safe plan? 🫡 Will probably opt for the Litelok X3 for D lock as we can't predict how the kickstarter will go but if I was to get a chain for at home I could always grab a 25mm Almax Ultimate chain to use with the D Lock 😛

Great video John. Good, sensible and realistic advice. It makes me laugh that some of the best chains available today, like Pragmasis, still don’t appear on many insurers/comparison websites. This it good; placement of any lock to make it as difficult as possible is what I have been doing for decades. I added metal flat washers to a padlock to beef it up to slow down any attack. When I lock up the trailer axle with a motorcycle chain, it goes through the rim, padlock is under the trailer attached to the leaf-spring. Keep it real!
As an amateur lock picker I’ll confirm…what you see on LPL and others…is years and years of patient learning and skills that only a few can master. Cheap locks like Master locks are easy…so are lockable internal doors at home etc…but anything with security pins at a good price is very hard to pick and not like the movies at all….
Plus criminals are not master thieves. It's not like gone in 60 seconds...they're not out mastering the art of lock picking, more like mastering the art of conniving and drug selling ect
People need to understand that LPL is an outlier. It's like watching a master cardshark at work. Every sleight of hand these cardsharks do is an art and for sure, it looks easy. If I expose the classic pass in slow-mo and in plain view, you will think it looks easy. In my years performing sleight of hand, I was never worried about letting my audience see how these cheating techniques work because they will NEVER be able to do it. Takes LOTS of practice and determination that if you could master them, I don't see why you would want to cheat at card games because you could have used those attributes you have (patience and determination) to learn proper skills that could make much more money legally. Likewise, if these low life criminals are willing to put in the amount of time, effort, and patience into learning how to pick locks, why would they learn such a useless skill because putting in those same effort and time spent, they could have picked up skills that could earn them more money legally than a low life bike thief ever could. That's why people really shouldn't worry about lock picking when it comes to these unsophisticated low life bike thieves.
It’s definitely about the layering. I used to use front and rear caliper locks, kryptonite lock and chain, ,lock the steering, and motion alarm. If you want to steal my bike, I’m going to make it as difficult as possible. Never had my bike stolen. My next bike I will invest into the hiplok as it is very impressive. Great work!
Thanks for the video. Why we are not talking about the increasing of theft crime. The thieving is not crime anymore. Police do not do anything and don’t care if your bike has been stolen. All thieves are really doing their job easily even while cameras record them because there is no deterrent for them in terms of the law. I think we have to talk about this kind of thing as well with very loud.
The Met Police don’t even bother coming out to you if your bike is stolen and that’s if you have a tracker fitted! They simply do not care about motorcycle crime in the capital. As there is no punishment the thieves can do what ever they like and take their time as they know that they won’t get caught!🤔
@Mozzer_999 I know, believe me, I know. They are utterly useless! Funny how they’re always about if you go a mile or 2 over the speed limit. But, of course those buggers are Traffic?
I haven't looked up the price yet,but the dx1000 will be added to my litelock x3 and pragmasis 13mm chain, with live on the pillion seat off my tracer 900gt,great review John, always enjoy watching your no nonsense videos
I use an abus granite extreme on my tiger explorer. My tip for these d locks is buy a set of grip puppies and tape and use them on the d lock to protect the paintwork on your wheel. I then use an abus 8008 disc lock on the front. Using these two for me is perfect. The d lock stradles the shaft drive and goes either side of the wheel bars not spoke and connects on the outside of the wheel. I have been using these two constantly since Feb 2019. And apart from a spray of copper grease on the d lock and a new battery every year on the 8008 they are both working perfectly. Kept outside as well. As you say these locks are a good deterrent. And do give peace of mind.
This is some of the best consumer advice out there, bravo. Johnny Thief is a lazy bloke (this is why he’s a thief). Any lock will be better than no lock but a good lock is better. The best lock? The one you use. I have a d1000, I feel safe enough.
Excellent video John. I can confirm that insurance companies don't offer discounts even on dealer fitted trackers. As I live in a very large, European city, I was required to prove (I'm not with Bennetts) that I had one of the Insurance company's approved locks on my bikes by sending both a copy of the receipts and a picture of the locks attached to the bikes. My bikes are in an alarmed, underground, lockup garage (so two doors before you can see the bikes) but they must be locked while in the garage. Also, if a bike is stolen and the lock is not fitted, I'll only receive 50% payout. I receive no discount for the garage alarm or tracker as, according to the insurance company, it's more likely that the bike will be stolen when it's not in the garage. Having said that, the (fully-comp) cover is excellent and also includes Commuting, Roadside Assistance, Legal et al. at a very reasonable price. So, again, I agree with you that you have to find the policy which suits all *_your_* needs best.
@@bennettsbikesocial well spotted for the location. Yes, they have to as there are an unbelievable number of motos (two and three wheeled vehicles) in just Paris alone. I'm told that France has more motos than most of the rest of Europe put together. This, of course, makes them a target for theft.
Great video, you’ve just inspired me to buy a dx1000. Just bought my first bike after passing my test. Fell in love after about 10 minutes and spent the best part of a grand on various locks and chains and trackers 😂
another good video, looking forward to getting my AX1000, I was part of the crowdfunding (people who pre-paid) to see this come to fruition and so glad i did based on your video as looks like the best ground anchor out there :-)
Hi John another great review 👍 Glad to see someone has finally used a diamond disc to cut through these locks. I have always wondered whether it would make a difference.
Your videos are top notch. After my pedelac has been stolen as well as my mountainbike (in the bike storage room where i live) im looking forward for getting the d1000. Good luck mate getting 100k subs. I subbed
I already own the first D1000 and was already impressed, although the size made it awkward to use on certain bikes like my ebike, so I'm looking forward to getting the new DX1000 which should be big enough to fit both the rear wheel and frame of my bike, I'll also be able to combine it with my original D1000 for even more security.
‘Nobody can carry a 22mm chain with them’ - I do 😂 bigger actually. I have it on the pax seat. Nobody getting my bike. Planning on adding this to my combo in the future.
Top Tip: Stacking steel washers around a padlocks exposed shackle, forces thieves to attack the more resilient chain and/or ground anchor (if used) instead. 👍
Just ordered one I also have the Litelok x1 after watching your channel last year and the Oxford beast chain and lock but I do have 3 bikes to lock away and a bike trailer so the more difficult I can make it to move any of them the better, my Rebel 1100 also has a tracker fitted which I can monitor at home and the DX is for that along with the beast chain to the trailer. The litelok is just about OK to carry on the bike and coupled with Oxford Boss Alarm lock they hopefully put off anyone when out and about. 2022 Super Cub 125 Rebel 1100 and a NC700S-D for winter and £4K bike trailer so I do keep everything locked together when I can to prevent anyone lifting them into a vehicle..
Hi John, thanks for the videos, I really enjoy the content you release, always very informative without a bias. Just a thought could the companies also include some sort of material inside that would act like chainsaw trousers when they are cut, effectively jamming everything? Anyway, thanks for the video, I bought a litelok x3 after watching the initial test you carried out on it.
It's not the job of the police to stand over your motorcycle. If you don't spend the money and the time to do as much as you can to prevent the motorcycle from theft, why then do you think the police put resources into finding it.
We need the Bowley Rotasera key cylnder, Thanks for the video, What happened to Altor SAF?, Why did Altor stop making it, that lock took 1 hour and 45 minutes to grind through and 7 blades and 5 batteries.
I appreciate the work you do. Always doing the work and testing that takes the comfort out of consumers. Is the new dx1000 stronger than the litelok x3
I have some time before I'll need a really good lock like this one as I plan to get an Etrike but I'm a ways from doing so, need to save the rest of the money That said these locks look really REALLY good and these might be near top of my list for when I do get one. I have a Kryptonite U-lock and cable combo in the meantime.
Another fab and info-filled review John, i'll be a very sad lad when / if you retire from doing this, you're basically the Project Farm of motorcycle paraphernalia!
Thanks so much! That's a high standard though, and I've not been doing enough of the really in-depth videos to get close. More to come though... Cheers, John
Love the review, always great information. When it comes to the size of the lock, is it best to get the smallest lock that fits over the tire? Or the cast iron spokes? And is it better to place the lock over the tire or through the spokes? Last (annoying question), better to place the lock on the front tire or the rear tire?
Some will claim the front wheel gets removed but there's very little evidence of that in motorcycle theft, and very unlikely. A lock over the wheel is great, but over cast spokes seems to be fine too as even on my test wheel with no disc, I couldn't get the grinder in to attack the spokes. Cheers, John
All good advise as usual. However all anti theft devices are undermined by the Police not taking Motorcycle theft as seriously as they could. The main anti theft scenario is if the Scummers think there is a decent chance of getting nicked.
Aluminium can do that, but it's finding the balance in a compact form. The Ferosafe destroys abrasive discs, and the hardened steel resists diamond ones. Cheers, John
Great video, again, Mr. Milbank, I have to ask are the grinder-resistant locks, from Litelok and Hiplok, essentially the same? Is the significant difference is the size of the locks? I have heard thieves decide to not steal a bike because of the difficulty of the lock. "Let's take the other bike, it only has a (brand) lock. We can cut that in a few seconds." Should someone who owns the LiteLok X3 or Hiplok D1000 switch to the Hiplok DX1000?
They're both different materials - Hiplok uses Ferosafe welded to the hardened steel, whereas Litlok has a material (possibly a ceramic) that forms part of the material itself. Honestly, if you have the Hiplok D1000 or the Litelok X3 there's no need to 'upgrade' if those fit and work as you want them to. Cheers, John
Interesting. Would be nice to see a thief have a go, because where you can be seen changing disk multiple times because of a small chip, they will not. meaning less blades used and less time.
John, what sort of disks did you use? I am tempted to buy two of these and test one destructively with a couple of different grinding disks. The dewalt one looks pretty good though, diablo and norton make some really good cutting wheels.
Love your reviews. How's the VFR getting on? I have a question about the locks.... is it the silicone covering that affects the cutting discs? Would it cut faster with the rubbery silicone material peeled off? Can it be peeled off? I know nothing about locks as I live in the deepest countryside of Ireland. Have to use them when out and about. I do have the old muttercycle chained to a propane gas cylinder and two disc locks, in a garage. Have a few ferrile cats about also
Thanks! Yeah, VFR is great, just haven't had time to sort the videos. The silicone only protects the bike's paint and doesn't affect the security at all. Kevlar sleeves could make chains a little slower to cut but they're not bothered with as they'd be too easy to slash off. Cheers, John
Thankyou John and Bennetts - fantastic video and I have just ordered a DX1000. Could I ask a question? Which is the most resistant to an angle grinder - a pragmasis 19mm protector chain or the DX1000? Thanks!
Click-bait garbage I'm afraid... Can you explain to me please how the body of the lock has been removed to cut that part of the shackle? Cutting that section - the bottom of the latching pins - is impossible without either unlocking it, or cutting off the body of the lock
Hiplock has 2 chains (Mega Chain and XL Chain) that are Sold Secure Diamond. I have seen reviews on them though. Would love to see your testing and review on them if you can get your hands on them.
Would be interested to know how long it lasts with a large angle grinding disc (the size used to cut paving slabs etc). Looks like a terrific lock though.
When I started building the huge library of lock tests we have, I bench-marked a larger grinder and a petrol cutter, but both were slower. Larger discs result in lower torque on a grinder too. Cheers, John
decent pinch bar, six feet long with the tip sharpened on a grinder I could rip them roof bolts out of concrete or brick, as for the steel shackle of the lock different story but all anchors unless they are cast into concrete floors are weak points, trust me anything that is retrofitted is easily removed, it will stop most thieves but someone who has a bit a savvy and goes equipped will bypass any bolted or screwed anchor in seconds,
I have a couple bikes and lock them together in the garage with an Oxford Monster padlock and chain. I saw a video where locks were opened in seconds using a comb rather than being picked.
I can't see it - it's just not possible on the street for any but the most skilled. Things can always be cut, but it's time... And there'll always be plenty of people who don't lock their bikes or don't use as effective kit.
People like LPL practice for hours every day to maintain their skill (he just posted an hour video showing his practice routine). I don't think many thieves are going to have that level of dedication when it doesn't take any skill to grind a lock.
Any chance you could test some alarmed disc locks? I'm interested in how well they perform as alarms, not just locks. Such as, do they go off when expected, do they give false alarms too easily, is it loud enough, what battery type, etc?
Thanks for the idea for the "HipLok" wearable bicycle lock, unfortunately while reaching for my Hiplok on my belt I was shot 3 times for reaching. Luckily the cop was a bad shot and hit my "HipLok" 3 times. Lucky me. Still a good idea. Next time I'll carry it in my backpack. 🤣🤣🤣🤣
Also, Bosch’s X lock cutting disc system allows for swapping discs almost instantaneously, which makes any tests based solely on the ordinary way of attaching discs to angle-grinders partially valid in respect of time required to cut the lock with ordinary abrasive discs. The performance of those vary considerably between brands (ua-cam.com/video/7Ase0GXjx4w/v-deo.html), and it cannot be said that in general it takes 10 abrasive based cutting disks to cut through the lock’s rod. Sure, they are good locks for deterring the kids from stealing bicycles and motorbikes.
What do you recommend for a trike/electric trike? I am so worried about it getting stolen I hardly take it out. I've found it's hard to fit the best locks because the two tires means the U locks can't reach to whatever you're trying to secure it to.
Nice review John, I’m looking to get a D Lock either the Hiplok or Litelok really for out and about, at home at the moment anyway I live in a very low crime area. I wonder how the Guardsman garage security barrier does, not sure if you’ve ever reviewed this?
Very few of the items I review are done as videos - you really need to check the BikeSocial website. www.bennetts.co.uk/bikesocial/reviews/products/security/garage-and-home-security/guardsman-security-barrier-review-destruction-test
Can you test the Squire Stronghold D16/230 in your next review please? It's powered cycle gold and bicycle diamond, but I can't find a destructive test that I can trust. I'm looking for an alternative to the Litelok X1 or Abus Granit
Thank you, great video, After a bad experience with an attempted theft, I am using both a litelok X3 and a hiplok D1000. I have a question about something in the video. Did you say that having the lock go over the entire wheel on the front wheel is better than the cast spoke on a either wheel? why is that?
Sorry to hear that, but great you have such good kit now! Sorry - I meant both work well, assuming the cast spoke is fairly inaccessible to a grinder. Hope that makes sense. Cheers, John
Love your videos!!! I have a question :D, What bike would you recomend Gsx s1000 2020 and on or Z900 same year? I would use it for joy rides and traveling once a year for 2000km or so over 2 weaks. 190cm hight and 130kg :D.
@@bennettsbikesocialthank you so much! Was hoping that you would say gsxs1000 :D. Could you give me short awnser why is z900 better? Smoother ride? Better handeling etc?. Thank you
I can’t help but to think, imagine a bike lock with some kind of flammable inlay or pepper spray. Once they cut into it all willy nilly, the defenses of the squirting liquids make it difficult to continue. Ex: A) the flammable inlay will follow the flame being sprayed by the cutters. B) it creates a smoke of some kind of pepper spray making it difficult to see and stay composed. Horrible, I know. guerrilla warfare at this point 😅 stunt them one tactic at a time
Hi , I have a sym jet x 125 ( new rider ) . I'm looking at getting the DX1000 but they have an offer on atm for the d1000 plus the chain for the same price as the dx1000. What would be the best option in people's opinion?
Tethering the bike to something would be even better, but with the DX you could go over the wheel. And the DX will be more likely to suit whatever you get next. It's an investment
Have a look at the Hiplok website - they're starting it on Kickstarter first, but you can trust it as they did that with the D1000 too. It's already beat its target. Cheers, John hiplok.com/1000-series/
Thanks for the review. It appears the Hiplok still takes less discs then the Litelok X3? Even if it takes longer…… Does this make the Litelok X3 still the more resistant lock if you disregard the larger size (say you were using it on an ebike)
It's kind of academic at this point with abrasive discs, but it's important to note that the Hiplok has a notable advantage when attacked with a diamond disc
I wouldn't say so, and given the value and ease of theft of e-bikes, I'd want a proper lock on it like this if I had one. Here's the full review: www.bennetts.co.uk/bikesocial/reviews/products/security/motorcycle-chains-and-locks/hiplok-dx1000-review-home-away-security
@@bennettsbikesocial had a peek at the kick starter the price is basically the sane as the current D1000 and it doesn't release until April 24. That's some time away. Thanks for all your information nevertheless
Is LPL really that highly skilled? We cannot know. If he picks and chooses. I had a lock picking set as a Christmas gift once. Practiced on the clear lock, the did a cheap padlock, then a pricey one, have done old house door locks... If I did a series on just those I might look like a pro - thing is I'm not at all.
Which is rather damning for manufacturers if you think this. If they can't resist an amateur's efforts perhaps they shouldn't be lock manufacturers at all. Whilst he's not done this lock, he has done litelok in the past. I imagine a large number of manufacturers are messaging him for a chance of some great publicity, the fact he's not responded to this one or featured it is unsurprising.
Yes, but you need to take the silicone sleeve off to do it. I wrapped mine in insulation tape. Best bet is to get the new DX1000 though. They'll be available soon...
For what it might be worth, putting freely rotating chrome moly slugs inside the straight part of the shackles would take forever and a day to cut through. Just sayin…

It's definitely a good point 🤘
Uk is a really small country and those groups are really just a few people... still whole society afraid of few people... and this is really sick.

Looking at your videos, are you in France? Sounds like they take security very seriously!

Love the M&S Safety Slippers. Need to get them to use in my garage.
An essential, no doubt! Cheaper at the Springfields Outlet centre too...
Is the new DX1000 wide enough to fit both the rear wheel and frame of my bicycle?
‘Nobody can carry a 22mm chain with them’ - I do 😂 bigger actually. I have it on the pax seat. Nobody getting my bike. Planning on adding this to my combo in the future.
Blimey! Nicely done! Cheers, John
Thank you John & Bennett’s this is excellent content.
Top Tip: Stacking steel washers around a padlocks exposed shackle, forces thieves to attack the more resilient chain and/or ground anchor (if used) instead. 👍
It's a nice idea, though decent quality chains all come with closed shackle locks, where the steel body envelops it.
@@bennettsbikesocial And in cases where they're not closed shackle design. Washers work well to guard an otherwise vulnerable shackle.
You're doing everything right... nice work and a great collection of bikes! Cheers, John
Great video mate, keep em coming!
Considering getting one for my e-bike

I appreciate the work you do. Always doing the work and testing that takes the comfort out of consumers. Is the new dx1000 stronger than the litelok x3
In my testing, it has a greater combined attack resistance (based on abrasive and diamond discs)
I have some time before I'll need a really good lock like this one as I plan to get an Etrike but I'm a ways from doing so, need to save the rest of the money
That said these locks look really REALLY good and these might be near top of my list for when I do get one.

Cheers,
John
All good advise as usual. However all anti theft devices are undermined by the Police not taking Motorcycle theft as seriously as they could. The main anti theft scenario is if the Scummers think there is a decent chance of getting nicked.
Do they use zinc alloy discs in the lock like kryptonite does? If so a plumbing torch and 2 minutes will defeat it.
I wonder if it would be possible/beneficial to add some kind of gooey or plastik core to the lock, that gums up the cutting disc when it melts?
Aluminium can do that, but it's finding the balance in a compact form. The Ferosafe destroys abrasive discs, and the hardened steel resists diamond ones. Cheers, John
@@bennettsbikesocial I guess you could also add gunpowder to the core. Then a would-be thief would only attempt it once?
@@FedeHippothat'd be fun to weld during manufacturing!
Great video, again, Mr. Milbank,
I have to ask are the grinder-resistant locks, from Litelok and Hiplok, essentially the same? Is the significant difference is the size of the locks?
I have heard thieves decide to not steal a bike because of the difficulty of the lock. "Let's take the other bike, it only has a (brand) lock. We can cut that in a few seconds."
Should someone who owns the LiteLok X3 or Hiplok D1000 switch to the Hiplok DX1000?
@@bennettsbikesocial Thanks much for the insights. Your work is appreciated.
Thankyou John and Bennetts - fantastic video and I have just ordered a DX1000. Could I ask a question? Which is the most resistant to an angle grinder - a pragmasis 19mm protector chain or the DX1000? Thanks!

Do you mean a comb pick? Poor quality locks can be more vulnerable of course.
Yes and 10 'Masterlocks' were opened in seconds. I don't know if 'Oxford' or 'Hiplok' would fare any better.

What would make it better, is being able to use my own lock cylinder so I'm able to use the same kay for my topbox.
It's interesting that lock picking isn't currently a common problem but how long will that be the case if locks become uncuttable?
I can't see it - it's just not possible on the street for any but the most skilled. Things can always be cut, but it's time... And there'll always be plenty of people who don't lock their bikes or don't use as effective kit.
People like LPL practice for hours every day to maintain their skill (he just posted an hour video showing his practice routine). I don't think many thieves are going to have that level of dedication when it doesn't take any skill to grind a lock.
Looking forward to these coming out. You’re in Coventry? Same here. Ever head out o the Long Itch Diner?
No, but I think I'm going to need to... cheers, John
Any chance you could test some alarmed disc locks? I'm interested in how well they perform as alarms, not just locks. Such as, do they go off when expected, do they give false alarms too easily, is it loud enough, what battery type, etc?
Great video, cheers! How does it compare to the litelok?
It has a bigger shackle, and the combined attack resistance is slightly higher, but at this level it's academic

You know what else would be a useful? A device that detects angle grinder or drill noise and sends you a notification.

Having it over the entire wheel is better than a cast spoke generally though.
Why doesn't someone create a lock with mesh/kevlar woven in-between the metal, surely that would instantly stop the blades
