The production is so modern that it is hard to believe it is a film from the 20's. Hitchcock is a genius after all!
I cannot thank you enough for posting this simply BRILLIANT film - nearly 100 years old and still a wonderful visual feast from the old master himself. The subtitles were a stroke of genius as there weren't too many of them and the sound on my machine is a bit dodgy. It's lovely too see the London of old and sad to think that so many people who watched this film will have died in the coming war. Alice was gorgeous and with a face so expressive. Her boyfriend was so much more handsome than that horrible jail bird and the obnoxious artist who attacked her - a very controversial subject for the time. Typical Hitch. R.I.P. Once again thankyou.
Agree
Unity of time. Unity of place. Unity of Action. Beautiful face all angles. Words spoken by her, delicious and unpredictable. Only the greatest directors/writers can come up with a Real Ending

Alfred Hitchcock cameo, the longest one I’ve seen!
Thank you for the upload.
One must keep in mind the transportation used in this film was the nicest & newest way to move ppl around.

¡Vaya, qué afectuosisima dedicación!
It is fascinating how Hitchcock rushed to add sound to this movie, which the technology for was just emerging - and the challenges adding it caused.
He suspected that he would be asked to add sound at some point so he filmed the silent version with that in mind

Hi
@@brendakrieger7000 -- Hey, Brenda!
Hitchcock, the even the name it"s self just is unbelievable.
Shot as as a silent. Mainly reshot as a talkie. Then released as a talkie and a silent. Not the first British talkie however. Lots of Hitchcock early fascinations with knives. Revisited in Dial M for Murder and Psycho. A very good movie for a young director.
Great movie naturally being a Hitchcock and rather impressive being made in 1929 !
Time travel visited in 1929, beautiful film.
good art is the love, passion of the artist that can be experienced through a medium...great art can approach spirituality...thank you for this work of art...
The suspense was overwhelmingly uncomfortable. It was seen in the faces, especially the beautiful young actress. Artistically filmed originally in black & white. I recognized Alfred Hitchcock sitting in what probably was the underground. Also in this early flick was Cyril Richard who played the murdered man.
Thank you, thank you.
Just marvelous.
I don't know how to thank you for the subtitles that you have provided in my mother tongue and the people of my land, so that we can enjoy watching the movies of the master of cinema (Alfred Hitchcock).
Adorei. Parabéns por ser legendado.
Thankyou for sharing, amazing such good quality from 1929, like a time capsule, with the actor's coming alive on stage with voices silent from long ago 👍
Thank you.

Look for Alfred's cameo in the subway scene! Reading a newspaper being bothered by a little boy.
Ok

Around at 00.10.50.
There's a tube scene approx from 10:47 with Alfred annoyed by a boy.
PERFECT.
In 1929 Scotland Yard was at the absolute peak of hi tech! Radios in cars! At 1st it seems to be a silent film, but after a minute or 2 you can see it is not.
i did not know Anny Ondra starred in english speaking movies. I know her more as the wife of German boxing legend Max Schmeling and later German films. Lovely lady
Her voice is dubbed. She spoke English well, but her accent wasn't right for the part.
I think this is the only English-speaking movie she was in. Her voice was not dubbed (they did not have the technology to do it) but as she silently mouthed the words another actress on set would voice them.
@@steveblundell7766that is how this was done ?
@@brittalbach416 Yes, it's hard to believe now that they would do something like that but sound technology was new and they were still experimenting.
@@steveblundell7766oh yes, that makes sense. I love the older films, times seemed nicer, at least to me

I love this movie for soooo many reasons!
London amazing so white, not so now a day's. Fully enjoyed with a good ending.
Perfect!
Magnifique colorisation
Merci bien!!
Look those details.
Why isn't this on the ten best ever movies made immortal list. It's a Hitchcock, of course.
Although this movie is great I would say at least 10 other Hitchcock's are better
Una joya esta película.

42:36 a close-up of their painting, after she crossed out her signature.

10: 43 Hitch's classic appearance in the movie¡¡¡
Why no subtitles appear??😮
Merci pour la vf!
Funny how this technically innovatory film opens with an isolated CU of a wheel revolving fast. Hitch thereby admits he has failed to solve a technical problem that remains nearly a century later: how to convey fast forward motion of wheeled vehicles when the frame rate of the camera makes the wheel appear to be going backward. There are very brief shots of this phenomenon a few minutes into the film.
Truth to tell, 'Blackmail' is a silent with sync-sound sequences inserted belatedly as a gimmick. The much-touted 'knife' bit is a clunky, dead-end experiment. Sound could not be monkeyed about with like images, whatever fashionable montage theory maintained.
I love the 'knife' bit, I think it works well, but I wish they had used Anny Ondra's real voice, the person reading her lines doesn't sound right at all. I much prefer the silent version. For his first few sound films Hitchcock was just experimenting, they are not an easy viewing experience
❤❤❤
Hey can someone add in spoken dialogue i think the editor messed up
Existe esse filme dublado?
I Know that Alfred Hitchcock first started his career making Silent Movies , but do not know which ones he made, or, what year they were made in , can you tell me? or give out some information please ?.
_'Number 13'_ (1922) _-- this film was never completed and is considered lost. I believe it was to be called Mrs Peabody_
Always tell your wife (1923). _-- Hitchcock co-directed this short film. It is considered partially lost_
The Pleasure Garden (1925)
The Mountain Eagle (1926) _-- this film is considered lost_
The Lodger: A Story of the London Fog (1927)
Downhill (1927)
Easy Virtue (1928)
The Ring (1927)
The Farmer’s Wife (1928)
Champagne (1928)
The Manxman (1929)
@@steveblundell7766lost! How can it just be lost. That’s terrible.
@@BW-xz6ol I agree it is terrible, but although we regard these films as artistic works today, they were just viewed as commercial products at the time they were made so preservation was not a priority. I don't know what happened to them but sometimes film stock was recycled to recover costs. Also, nitrate film was highly flammable, entire film archives have been lost to fire

Why is color added to black and white films, but not sound to silent films?
Sound is added to silent films, I'm guess what you are talking about is dialogue, which can be done by dubbing.
For anyone that has seen a dubbed film, it is usually done as a necessity rather than an enhancement. A film doesn't really improve with dubbing, but it can be easier to understand and easier to sell. And of course, the dubbing needs to match the lip movements on the screen, and in many silent films they just didn't bother with this

25:38 'Ooh, you are awful'. Did Dick Emery see this? It was his catchphrase in drag as Mandy, the flirtatious blonde.
See the backwards writing on the store front at 43:33 that can't be original
I don't think the writing is backwards, I believe we are looking at the back of a sign that is directly above her head, just before she turns the corner
3:4 aspect ratio
Ragazze state attente ai corteggiatori occasionali!
