41 years later, I can still hear my mom's voice from downstairs: "Turn that crap down, will you?". If these guys were in another genre or art form, they all would have been knighted by now. They all are on the top of the technical tree. World-class musicians, performers and individuals. Bruce (the front man) is a renaissance man: rock star, airliner pilot, athlete (fencing), a degree in history and a PhD in music theory. Not to mention a cancer survivor.

That comment had me busting out laughing. I still recall my mom pounding on my bedroom door to yell at me to turn down my Walkman. It was full blast but I thought i was being quiet since I had the earbud headphones! My early teens were spent with Van Halen, Iron Maiden, Judas Priest, AC/DC and so many more. Thanks for that memory!

Based on the Charge of the Light Brigade in the Crimean war, 1854. That event also inspired the 1854 poem of the same name by Lord Tennyson. The song was released in 1983, it's on their 4th album, Piece of Mind. Eddie is their mascot.

"Eddie" (the zombie looking character you see briefly) is the mascot of the band and he is on all the album covers. When you see Iron Maiden tshirts, you will see "Eddie" on them, not the band members themselves. One of the things that made Iron Maiden so cool. They had the best album covers ever!!

This song 'The Trooper' came out in 1983 from Iron Maiden's 4th album 'Piece of Mind'... it was written by bassist Steve Harris & the album became another platinum success in the US and top 5 in the UK... This song still gets played live in concert 🤘🤘
Iron Maiden went through a few members, but this line-up is the classic one: Bruce Dickinson (vocals), Steve Harris (bass), Dave Murray and Adrian Smith (guitars) and Nicko McBrain (drums)... Currently, Iron Maiden is a 6-piece band (3 guitarists) w/ those same members + Janick Gers (guitar)

Iron Maiden revolutionized heavy metal sonically and they introduced their heavy metal mascot named 'Eddie the Head'...
When Iron Maiden was signed in 1979, they had been a band for a few years in the UK ... Their manager Rod Smallwood noticed that they had a silver mask displayed behind the stage which spewed smoke and had fake blood dripping from its mouth during Maiden's live set.
When Smallwood asked bassist Steve Harris about the mask, Harris told him they called it 'the Head' (In a thick British accent, it sounded like the "Ed") Hence, the name "Eddie the Head"... 👹
While Iron Maiden was working on their debut album for a 1980 release, Rod Smallwood noticed that the members of Iron Maiden were particularly introverted... bassist Steve Harris was soft-spoken offstage... then-vocalist Paul Di'Anno was a nice fellow; he was known to get into trouble sometimes, but he wasn't a big personality who stood out offstage. Smallwood felt that they needed a 'character' which could embody Iron Maiden's image...
Smallwood contacted a local artist named Derek Riggs who showed him a bunch of his art, mostly science fiction characters... But in his portfolio, there was a painting of a crusty, skeletal ghoul w/ hollow eyes and punk rock hair, standing in the dark streets of London... Riggs said that painting was inspired by a photo he had seen of a decapitated soldier's head placed on a tank during the Vietnam war... The character represented the punk youth of London decaying on the streets.
Smallwood loved the painting and made it the cover of Iron Maiden's debut album in 1980 and gave it the name 'Eddie the Head"... the character was also brought to life onstage by a crew member wearing an 'Eddie' mask during Maiden's concerts... In 1982, Iron Maiden was popular enough for the band to build a giant 'Eddie' for the stage and have him appear towering over the band members while they played live ... 'Eddie' was featured on all the Iron Maiden album covers and all their t-shirts, which became a marketing gold mine cos 'Eddie' was instantly recognizable.
Artist Derek Riggs spent much of the 80's and early 90's commissioned to painting 'Eddie' in various incarnations... Apparently, he split w/ Iron Maiden because he got tired of drawing 'Eddie'... He went on to paint other album covers... Other artists were hired from 1992 to depict 'Eddie' for Maiden's albums and t-shirts.
Motorhead also had a mascot - 'Snaggletooth'... which was a monster head w/ tusks protruding from its jaws... Dio had their mascot 'Murray' which looked like a demon w/ horns and giant eyes... Overkill had the vampire skull w/ batwings logo (which Avenged Sevenfold plagiarized...) ... Anthrax had the plump, cartoonish 'Not! man' ...
But it was Megadeth who got another great heavy metal mascot - 'Vic Rattlehead'... a skull w/ its eyes sealed shut... it's jaws locked and ears screwed shut.

Iron Maidens mascot is Eddie. He's always on the album cover, but has gone through many iterations. The song is from "Piece of Mind" album from the early 80's.

The Trooper is told through the eyes of a soldier on the British side from the Crimean War. The mascot Eddie is iconic. He is on all of their album covers and t-shirts. By the way, this was the 80s, so the spandex "pants" were pretty common for rockers.

Alot of their music is related to history or classic literature.... "2 Minutes to Midnight" alluding to the armageddon clock, "Aces High" was about the pilots defending England during WW2, "Run to the Hills" was about the slaughter of American Indians during the 1800's, "Where Eagles Dare" was about the movie of the same name, "The Flight of Icarus" was Greek mythology about Icarus and his father Daedalus. I could keep going, but you get the point. At least 50% of their songs back before 2000 were based on these types of stories. I was at an Iron Maiden concert abouit 15 years ago and a guy had a shirt on that said "I went to an Iron Maiden Concert and all I got was this shirt, and a degree in History..." Coolest concert tee there!

This is one of my favorite heavy metal songs, and a favorite from my teenage boy years. The tempo and the horse themed or complimentary. Everything other than the lyrics with describe the charge of the light brigade (a group of light cavalry) is meant to manifest and reflect horses and soldiers driving themselves in a serious pace to their doom.
This video is the first one that really made me think of my own mother and maternal grandmother.
Mom has a tin-year and was born in the 1930s show her taste in music was non-existent as far as my life went. With my grandmother, born in 1912, the same year as the Titanic sinking, her musical preferences were even more irrelevant.
I cannot imagine my mom and maternal grandmother reviewing songs like the three of you do, which makes me appreciate the three of you all the more.

I used to hang out with these guys back in the late 70's, early 80s....we all hung out in the Ruskin Arms in East London and i must have seen them play there at least 30 times.....they were the most humble guy's you could meet, just young dudes having fun. I even played football with Stevie Harris for a local amateur football ⚽️ team(Melbourne FC) and trust me,he was as good at that as he is on the bass!!! Best thing about Iron Maiden is that they have stayed true rockers and are STILL the most humble, decent guys you could meet. Up the Irons ⚒️

I just don't ever get tired of this song. I have a special affinity with this song... I am a bassist and one day one of the guitarists in one of my bands started playing this... I had heard the song but hadn't played it or even tried to. I got it about 90% correct on the first shot.... it was magic. So yeah... I have always loved the song. Other Iron Maiden songs to check out are Hallowed be Thy Name and Wasted Years. Bruce Dickinson is one of the all time great rock vocalists... metal or otherwise. Maiden was one of the first metal bands i started to listen to, i had played drums for about a year before started my metal story. I had finished all the abba , the disco and even some 50´s rock n roll albums but it got to easy to play and i wanted a challange. Next was jazz music and that was hard to play but i never liked the energy, so i started to listen to metal and maiden was one of those bands and i tell u that was a new level of drumming. Ok so this song is about a small was between England and Russia when england invaded the Crimea area and the general leading prolly the best cavallery at the time, the Light Brigade, missunderstood an order given and decided to sen these men straight at the frontline. I think they were about 650 men and less than 50 survived i think. Sabaton was not first at making songs about war history, maiden have many songs about this topic and i have heard Joachim from Sabaton say that one of his bands he was inspired by was Maiden and they have also been fronting Sabaton several times.

The mascot's name is Eddie, who has been drawn by Derek Riggs for over 40 years, and appears on all the album and single covers, as well as posters, t-shirts, and other Iron Maiden merch.
"The Trooper" is an adaptation of Alfred Lord Tennyson's poem "The Charge of the Light Brigade", about the Battle of Balaclava during the Crimean War. Many of Maiden's songs have a historical context, many of them hearkening back to famous British battles. "Aces High", for example, references the Battle of Britain, when the British fighter pilots were intercepting Nazi bombers during The Blitz.

The LP "Number of the beast" is my favorite, as it is the one I first bought when it was released, and I wore it out. Each song on it was a huge hit, and I think I owned a concert shirt for each song. When I first seen them in concert, it was the late 80's, and their Mascot "Eddie" was around 15 ft tall, walking around stage as they played. Was over 2 hours of a sold out amphitheater. Leaving the show, I spun a main bearing in my Trans Am. That night was both happy and sad. I will never forget it. Check out Run to the Hills off this same LP for more great story telling.

The film clip battlefield is from the 1936 film "Charge of the light brigade"set was lined with tripwires to trip the charging cavalry horses. For the filming of this climax, 125 horses were tripped; of those, 25 were killed or put down afterward. Errol Flynn, an accomplished horseman, was outraged by the animal cruelty and by director Michael Curtiz's seeming indifference. He attacked Curtiz, but they were pulled apart before any serious damage was done. The film's charge sequence later forced the U.S. Congress to ensure the safety of animals in future motion pictures; the ASPCA followed suit and banned tripwires from all films. Unlike Flynn's other blockbusters, because of the number of horses killed during the charge sequence, the film was never re-released by Warner Bros. It would not be seen again until 1956, when the company sold the rights to it and other pre-1950 films to Associated Artists Productions, after which it subsequently premiered on television. This scene was later used in the music video for the hit song The Trooper by Iron Maiden which was famously banned by MTV.

Don't know if you know this,.. but during the filming of the 1936 movie, The Charge of the Light Brigade starring, Errol Flynn, Olivia de Havilland and David Niven, the movie which this song is based on, over 120 horse were tripped using a wire, of which 25 were killed. Errol Flynn attacked (verbally) the director over this.
Furthermore, a Stuntman was also killed when he fell from a horse and was impaled on a lance (sword) stuck in the ground.

    In reference to this, Donna.
This song is about the Crimean War in 1854.
If you notice the bass line, it's basically mimicking the galloping of horses

Most of what should be told has been already. I will add that most of their work has historical significance or poetry interpretation. Look up the singer, he's interesting as they come. Singer, poet, public speaker, commercial pilot...yes he Flys their own jet, Olympic fencer and a cancer survivor....interesting to read up on.

Most of Iron Maiden's songs tell a story or have some historical context. Check out these two songs. Both are live but the quality of these performances is truly astonishing. Absolute masters of their craft...

Ladies to really appreciate Maiden you need to know a little about world history. Kind of similar to Sabaton. And the mascots name is "Eddie". They are some of the best musicians in the business, no one else sounds like them. They truly on the Mt. Rushmore of heavy metal.

A lot of metal bands have mascots.
Iron Maiden has "Eddie T Head", a zombie who has been put through the wringer of concepts and characterizations. He is featured on nearly all their covers (albums and singles) as well as many other song and tour concepts.
Megadeth has "Vic Rattlehead", a skeleton with metal staples fastening his jaw shut, a metal visor riveted to his face, and metal caps on either side of his head with small chains dangling from them - I am not sure, but I suspect this was to convey some kind of "see no evil, hear no evil, speak no evil" concept.
Other bands known for and easily identified by their mascots include Motörhead, Anthrax, Overkill, early (1980s) Helloween, and more.

If you listen to the bass line, it sounds like horses galloping. Steve Harris (the bass player) is known for that sound.

Iron Maiden's mascot is called Eddie and for the cover of the Trooper single he dressed up like a Trooper. But the song itself is about famous and tragic battle in the Crimean War.

Seen Iron Maiden live several times, absolutely amazing each time
Sadly the drummer Clive Burr in the late 90’s was diagnosed with MS he passed away in 2013.
Nico McBrain replaced him in1992 after Clive was fired by the band mid tour.

There are many from Iron Maiden from when they were young and old. Seventh Son of a Seventh son for example, The Rainmaker is another one. I would love you girls to react to the singer Jorn Lande, though, his voice is a combination of Dio and Coverdale, pretty 80's style.

They have a huge catalog of great songs to chose from
Number of the beast is my fave. Don't let the "Satanic overtones" scare you. The song was written by bassist Steve Harris after having a nightmare from watching The Omen(1 or 2?)
    Run to the Hills
    Somewhere in time.
Wasted years(cool vid showing the band while touring and hanging together)
Those are a few songs to pull ya into the Maiden Army lol. Enjoy!
