This song is based on the poem...Charge of the Light Brigade. The video shows clips of the movie by the same name. It was a battle in the Crimean War. the British against the Russians.

Yeah, 647 lightly armed horsemen got separated from the other brigades. They decided to charge 12,000 Russians with cannons! Surprisingly, many survived!

@@trmn8r677 It was a breakdown in communication between commanding officers who didn't like each other that saw them charge the cannons. They were meant to attack elsewhere more suitable for a light cavalry charge.

That sensation you mentioned of it feeling like you were riding those horses is thanks to Steve Harris superhuman galloping bass technique. He’s an absolute legend, 67 years old and still touring hard. Up the irons!!!

Glad to se this video, on thing you already may known , Iron Maiden is a Band wich tells you an history in almost every song, they reach the perfect balance to be hard Metal and put your mind into an story who is connected with the emotions of the moment and rithm of the song. Is a characteristic pretty unique because many bands try to do something similar but not many really made it so well.

    One of my favourites is:
The Rhyme of the Ancient Mariner.
It's a masterpiece. Live or studio, both versions are great. The studio version is cool because the sound effects are amazing, and the live versions are great because it's Iron freakin' Maiden, and they always kill it live.

The Trooper!!!! "The Charge of the Light Brigade". That's the name of the story this song is based on. It's about the Battle of Balaclava in 1854 during the Crimean War between the United Kingdom and Russia. In short, the song is about a small cavalry brigade of about 600 men charging at the wrong enemy objective and sustaining heavy casualties. A lot of Iron Maiden songs are based on history and literature works.

  • @caphowdy666
    @caphowdy666 Рік тому +8

The Trooper is based on The Charge Of The Light Brigade from the Crimean war in the 1800s, hence the sense of horses galloping with that bass line and drums.
The bit you stopped at with the words on screen about cannons is from the poem by Alfred, Lord Tennyson.

Bruce Dickenson is amazing. He takes the sing to wail capabilities of Robert Plant and brings them into the current era. His ability to wail and provide such power yet such perfect enunciation is legendary.
The song is basically written about the Crimean war era. The (su!cidal) charge of the light brigade. It's about honour and duty and bloody stupidity.
Men's lives thrown away due to stupid decisions, honour and pride. A charge in the wrong place, with all the mountains holding gun emplacements pointed straight at them.
It was the most savage and pointless part of the entire Balkan war, with huge casualties. For nothing but using their enemies ammuniton.
    "into the valley of death
    rode the six hundred"
Every man there knew they were almost assured to die, but duty and honour required it... and so they rode.

This song was based on the poem The Charge of the Light Brigade by Alfred, Lord Tennyson which tells of a military action undertaken by British light cavalry against Russian forces during the Battle of Balaclava in the Crimean War. A mounted a frontal assault against a Russian artillery. The cavalry brigade suffered terribly, with 118 men killed, 127 wounded, and about 60 taken prisoner.

This song is based on the Alfred Lord Tennyson poem Charge of the Light Brigade. Which takes place in the Crimean War. Fought between Russia and the Ottoman Empire (modern Turkey) where England, France and Sardinia (the island off of the West coast of Italy just south of the Island or Corsica) sided with the Ottoman Empire. The Charge of the light brigade occurred when the British attacked the Russians in the Battle of Balaclava.

Bisscute, where do I begin. I grew up as a Gen X. I have been a heavy metal fan all my life. I however have appreciated different kinds of music over the years. Iron Maiden has been my most fun bands to play as I love to play guitar. I would say that Adrian Smith was closer to my style and easier for me to relate to solo-wise. I can't think of a single album I dislike nor for composition, I cannot really tell you which one is the best. The number of the beast was a great album, this is the debute album fo this singer. You can definitely not go wrong with the number of the beast. In reality, you can't go wrong with any of them.

The last time I saw Iron Maiden live was the early 2000's. Rob Zombie opened for them. It was a really diverse show as far as concert goers go. Teens to grey haired old men. Some of them still rocking the long hair they did in the 70's and 80's

This was my FIRST official exposure to Iron Maiden back in 1984. It was the last song on a special metal compilation called Master Of Metal, and it was my favorite track on the whole album.
A "Volume II" of the compilation was released the following year and that opened with another Iron Maiden track, Run To The Hills. Another winner! Soon after that, I obtained my first official Iron Maiden album, Powerslave, and my favorite track off that was the opener Aces High, and that album remains my favorite IM album to this day. You gotta love that "glunk! glunk! glunk!" gallop of the bass! Steve "`Arry" Harris!
    GREAT STUFF!

"The Trooper" is about the Battle of Balaclava (1854) during the Crimean War (1853-1856), specifically about the Charge of the Light Brigade. Alfred Lord Tennyson, then Poet Laureate of the UK, wrote his poem, "The Charge of the Light Brigade" in 1854 shortly after the battle. A British light cavalry brigade (the six hundred) charged a Russian artillery battery and suffered a nearly 50% casualty rate (dead and wounded).
It's where the English expression, "Theirs not to reason why, Theirs but to do and die." comes from. Many replace "theirs" with "ours".
"Trooper" is what a soldier in a cavalry unit is called, at least in English.

The black and white footage is from the film Charge of the Light Brigade (1936) and depicts the real life Battle of Balaclava
during the Crimean war in which British cavalry charged Russian cannons.
Also for the film to make the horses fall down they tripped them with wires which resulted in horses becoming hurt so badly they had to be put down on the spot.

If you haven't done Aces High yet, its one of my favorites. My son was playing GTA when it first came out listening to the radio in the car. I was watching him play and this song came on and I'm rocking out. He says"mom you don't this song!" 😂😂😂Oh man, that was classic❤❤

Nice reaction! Different suggestions, you say? Ok! The most important thing to know is that Iron Maiden is such a creative band, having composed other "headbanger" songs and some other "not so heavy". My suggestions: "Aces high", "Fear of the dark", "Infinite dreams", "Wasted years", "The rhyme of the ancient mariner", "Alexander the great", "Hallowed be thy name", "The writing on the wall", "The flight of Icarus", "Stranger in a strange land", "Run to the hills". Up the Irons! 🤘

Love the old Maiden. My fave album would be a constant change between everything released in the 80's but Somewhere in time from 86 is really fantastic. Long Distance Runner and Alexander the Great is just good music. Bruce Dickinson is impressive, i'd loved to step into a airplane one day and hear "Hello, my name is Bruce Dickinson and i'll be your captain for this flight" Timeless - all of it.

Love how Bruce just jumps in, no build up. Also, fyi, for Bisscute, your chair dancing has gotten very good...appreciate the skill that takes ..😂

As others have commented, this song is based on an old poem. It's one that certainly the boys from Maiden would have learned in their English schools as teens. And they somehow managed to turn this school lesson on history and literature into a total banger! But that's just what Maiden does so well. They do the same thing in Rime of the Ancient Mariner.

Bass player Steve Harris invented the "galloping horse" bass line. Its a cornerstone of the Iron Maiden sound. Guitar fun fact: that red, star shaped guitar is an Ibanez Destroyer, its a copy (sort of) of a Gibson Explorer. Gibson designed and produced the Explorer in 1958. Its wild shape was too crazy for 1958 so not many Explorers were sold. Gibson stopped making them after just a few years. But in the early 1970s a few Explorers were popping up in rock bands. Allen Collins from Lynyrd Skynyrd played one, for example. No other guitar company copied the Explorer shape thinking it would be a waste of money and time. But, the Japanese guitar company Ibanez copied it and called it the Destroyer. Gibson guitars got pissed off and sued Ibanez for copyright violations. Gibson lost in court because the Destroyer has a few minor differences from the Explorer. While being an obvious copy of the design it isnt exact, so no copyright violation. Gibson and Ibanez are still rivals today.

I think it's generally accepted, even among other metal bands (who aren't a shy and retiring bunch in public as a rule) that when Iron Maiden are on form, no-one else can touch them.

Charge of the light brigade is the poem referenced in this video and is a big deal in the cavalry. About troopers knowingly charging into certain death. Beautiful. Thanks.

Hey Biss! You need to see Crazy on You - Heart! That is an incredible song, and Heart is a wonderful 70's rock band. I would really love to appreciate it if you could react to that.
