They were all young at this performance but already great musicians for the time. Ian Gillan on vocals along with Ritchie Blackmore on guitars and Roger Glover on bass was 25 at the time. Ian Paice on drums was 22 years old. And the "old" guy was the magical (R.I.P) John Lord on hammond organ who was 29 at the time.
Ian Gillan (vocals) of Deep Purple: "... it’s the influences that each individual member brought into the original band that gave Deep Purple its variety. You know, we cover everything from big band, to swing music, to rock music, and there’s a lot of humor in our music along with light-hearted touches. There’s a lot of texture and dynamics, which are essential to our music. That’s important, and it’s why we get so much joy from what we’re playing. When you’ve got a diet with as much variety as that, you don’t get fed up with it it. There’s always something unique to keep you interested."
As a vocalist who is now 66 years old and has been singing blues and rock for as long as I can remember, Ian Gillan still rates as one of the very best vocalists ever in the rock genre.
@@robertphelps1574 I was talking about myself, I am 66 years old and have been singing blues and rock all my life and Ian Gillan is one of my favourite vocalists
I saw them live in the 80s and I reacted the same way they did. It's a shame that John Lord has already died. He was the best at the Hammond organ. Many greetings from Germany !!
Ritchie Blackmore did something to his guitar that was amazing. He would take a scalpel and make cuts to the fingerboard of his guitar. It was called scalloping
Ha ha, i just noticed, i actually heard it and had to rewind but Ian dropped his drumstick at 12:20 i dont remember seing it before and i have seen this live video a few times before. Its a fantastic live performance overall and things like this only add to the authenticity of a live recording.
Adult audiences were expected to behave in those day, especially if the performance was being recorded or filmed. Making noise and being loud was seen as disrespectful to both the performers and other audience members. Think of classical music, jazz and night club singer performances, silence was key. Teenagers were different, like those seeing acts like Elvis or The Beatles. You can check out many performances from the era where the audience is silent. This of course changed with the emergence and evolution of Rock & Roll.
Congratulations, Ladies. You have been watching the birth of metal music. Deep Purple is considered as the first metal band. This is mid 1960s. If I'm correct, it's a protest song against the Vietnam War. This is music history. And in my opinion, the way you are moving through the years and the genres, is great 👍 👌 What a lovely family you are ❤ Greetings from the Netherlands 🇳🇱 🤘
I've mentioned it a few times - in the TV studios we were asked not to react and only to clap at the end. We really weren't zombies and loved this music and there were a lot of clubs here where we went crazy listening to english and american songs... Best wishes @all from hamburg (Germany) - Thanks for sharing !
I am so moved by the way the beautiful grandma enjoys the song! Every song I watch on your channel I discover different reactions from each one of you and I think it's beautiful that you do it together. Much respect and thanks for the entire channel. I wish all you the best, greetings.
I agree that watching them perform this song does make the experience better. Like watching Elvis do Unchained Melody live in '77! May i suggest Strange Kind of Woman from the Deep Purple Made in Japan album, Ian and Ritchie have a great "dueling banjos" session during the song.
The bass guitarist, Roger Glover, had after he left Deep Purple a new project that resulted in a hit in the Netherlands, Love is All (At the Butterfly Ball) with vocals by the legendary Ronnie James Dio. I loved the cartoon video as a teenager.
Strange Kind Of Woman , live in 1972 , if you want some more high notes , you will love it . The crowd here was told to be quiet so this could be recorded !
Love it girls !! I could tell Donna was enjoying it from Ian's first two notes everytime he was uttering after each scream, Then in the end she was "white-knuckling" !!
This was recorded in Manchester UK by Granada TV for a series call Doing Their Thing ,sitting at the back in a pink top is the Manchester United football legend George Best
Since certain viewers are seemingly having trouble with the spelling of certain member's names, these are the correct spellings. Ian Gillan (not Gillian) - vocals. Ritchie Blackmore (not Richie) - guitar. Jon Lord (not John) - organ (1941-2012 - oh! The unrivaled master of his craft). So far, I didn't read anybody misspelling Roger Glover (bass) or Ian Paice (drums), but for clarity: there they are also.
My son took me to see Deep Purple in concert for my 62nd birthday in 2017. I had missed them in 1975 because their stage collapsed while setting up and they cancelled. I almost think my son, who was 32 at the time, enjoyed it as much as I did! Alice Cooper and Edgar on the same bill. Great show! Oh, and try driving to "Highway Star" without getting a speeding ticket!
I like hearing Lulu's hair and fashion comments in addition to the musical reactions. Donna your enjoyment and excitement was awesome! It was clear that you girls, Kathy and Lulu also loved it! Lulu, your hair resembles that of the singer. Thanks for this wonderful reaction, I totally loved it!!
I prefer the studio version too. Ritchie's solo on this live version isn't up to his usual high standards and Lord doesn't even solo in the jam (probably due to TV time restrictions). Their best live performance would be from Stockholm 1970 (even better than Made in Japan). ua-cam.com/video/G54KUqOsf34/v-deo.html song at 1:29:00
Ladies Deep Purple are all Legends. Ritchie Blackmore is the guitar GOAT, Jon Lord is the Keyboards GOAT, Ian Gillan, Ian Paice, and Roger Glover are all top 5 legends. The "British" audience was instructed to remain quite. Only the Brits would comply. Thanks for reviewing this truly Legendary band.
I brought deep purple in rock when I was 11 years old 1970. My first album. The song is about the the veitnum war. Iam 66 now the best song ever written. 😊
I am also 66 and also bought this when I was about 11 or 12, but it wasn't my first album, Led Zeppelin had that honour. Both incredible bands, but while I have always loved Deep Purple, I have to say, I still prefer Led Zeppelin overall, but its a close thing. I do however rate Ian Gillan as my favourite rock vocalist of all time, and as a fellow vocalist myself, having fronted both rock and blues amateur bands since I was 16, I believe I do know something about it. And this does rate as one of the very best songs ever, along with Stairway to Heaven.
I love the time in history that I came up in. Because of my mom and my dad's youngest siblings, I was a very young kid to absolutely fall in love with all these bands. This Led zeppelin, Black Sabath, and so on and so on, etc. Experimental and so many different directions. The best musicians ever to create music.❤
Studio audiences back then were asked to be quiet during performances because electronic filters etc back then did not have sufficient capability to adequately separate the audience noise from the music and would have marred the recording.
Great song, great performance, great reaction! By the way: the music of my youth. The late 60s and 70s was a great exciting time. - Hey girls, you are blessed with a wonderful (grand)mum! Don't stop listening to her! Her knowing smile and empathy with which she accompanies the music touched me. I felt that this is our music and that it gives us the same feeling. My heart belongs to you, ma'am - and a subscription anyway. Love & Peace from Germany
Vcs estão falando de umas das BANDAS mais perfeitas que já existiram "DEEP PURPLE" um dos maiores vocalistas é o maior de todos os guitarristas. Adorei sua avõ lembrando e curtindo. Tamo junto 😍😍😍
Your reactions to this band are making me so happy..this is my favorite rock band ever..im going on 56 and been loving this band since i was 15. Your reactions are so pure and genuine..it really like reliviving the first times i heard these guys.. one little tip for future reference.. what you keep referring to as audio versions..you should call it the studio version.. studio vs live right? Keep doing what you do. God bless
Hi girls .... greetings from England! I was lucky enough to see DP in 1971 and have never forgotten what supreme musicians they all were. Absolutely awesome live and now at 68 I still feel the same!
Just look at the BBC audience not allowed to move, not allowed to show any emotion bloody epic song, please please please react to Deep Purple Lazy from the made in Japan Live album BTW at 12:22 Ian Paice drops a drum stick and nobody notices !!
I saw them back in the day and they were just as great as what you just heard, true musical legends who influenced all heavy music that came after. Another great live gig is Deep Purple live at the California Jam 1974. Do Burn, signature song from their new album with David Coverdale on vocals and Glenn Hughes on bass/vocals. Phenomenal, all day concert, Black Sabbath, ELP and the Eagles were there, too. Enjoy! 🎵🎸🎤🎹🎶
Ok....I Love this Song... I have always loved it ! Here in California, we enjoyed this song and many others. Yet, and this is completely true, I have had people in my house that said, straight up, that this song was illegal in their house. Think about that.....this song was illegal in their house ! I Love this Song, if for nothing else, but to be illegal somewhere in the world (this was in eastern Europe)....... I will always Love #RitchieBlackmore and Deep Purple for bring this to the forefront.... We never know just how great we have it until someone decides we should not have it !!!! God Bless You All....and God Bless Blackmore's Night !!!
Also Robert plant of led zeplin was born 3 or 4 miles from Birmingham England thats were I live most of the best bands from the 60 70 80 90s come from Britain mostly England
You out done yourselves now girls. Love your reactions so infectious especially Donna !! No need for silly pyros just incredible musicianship and the voice of ian Gillan. I saw them live twice in Glasgow 1971 '72 , 17 years old at the time when rock ruled the world. Don't know how to you get you a coffee but try ' Yes ' live symphonic 'Roundabout ' cheers from Scotland.
This is the Mark II (Two not Eleven) version of Deep Purple, in my opinion the best version, and the version I have seen three times live. But to me the most amazing part of this video is... the reaction of the audience. Crickets. Ian Gillan-Vocals, Ritchie Blackmore-Guitar, Roger Glover-Bass, Jon Lord-Organ and Ian Paice-Drums. For another take on Ian Gillan, check out his performance as the voice of Jesus in the original recording of "Jesus Christ Superstar" by Andrew Lloyd Weber. This is an artistic recommendation, not a religious one.
I totally agree, I'm 62. In my youth I bought Made in Japan twice, we did. parties with friends, we brought our records that ended up getting damaged or simply disappeared. Then I bought it on CD but on my 50th birthday it was a great gift Made in Japan on vinyl, boy, at the first beat the Highway Star I couldn't hold back some tears.
The musicians from the 70s were always so talented, always think they're stuff's better live...Deep Purple, Zeppelin, Sabbath, Yes, Who, Allman Bros etc.
Hey ladies, that was the original deep purple members with Ian Gillian on vocals Richie Blackmore on guitar Roger Glover on bass Ian paice on drums and Jon Lord on keyboard
Oh and Ritchie Blackmore went off in 1975 to start the band Rainbow- another top rock group with Ronnie James Dio. Should check out some of their stuff ❤
Yeah, personally i like Rainbow much better although i also like Purple, Rainbow is much more my style and i have also been a huge fan of Dio since the 80´s, i really recommend the live video with Rainbow from Munich in 1977 but maybe they should hear some studio songs before. Stargazer is of course one epic classic, there is no live footage though.
The "piano" was actually a Hammond organ and needed a master like Jon Lord to play it. Not only did he have two sets of keys to contend with, but also the levers to push and pull above those. Can you imagine the proficiency you need for that?
Thank you so much for sharing this vid. Sadly Jon Lord the keybord player passed away just a few years ago. In that day the audiance were asked to behave.
Sometimes I forget just how lucky we rock fans were back in the 1970's. Deep Purple were part of that classic heavy rock triumvirate which included Black Sabbath and Led Zeppelin. British rock bands were the best in the world. Throw into the mix Genesis, Pink Floyd, Emerson, Lake and Palmer, Yes and Jethro Tull, I could go on and on. I would also suggest that you take a listen to Slade. There is a video on You Tube of them performing "Get Down and Get With It". I saw them perform this one on several occasions at Lancaster University and they almost brought the house down each time. Those were the days!
This was filmed at Granada Television studios in Manchester, England on July 17, 1970. There were several other songs filmed for this television special called “Doing Their Thing: Deep Purple” that’s also on UA-cam.
Another great Deep Purple performance would be most definitely the live performance of the song “Burn” at the California Jam. The Deep Purple line up at that time featured Glenn Hughes & David Coverdale along with Jon Lord the organist, Ritchie Blackmore the guitarist and Ian Paice on the drums. This is truly an awesome performance.
IAN GILLAN SINGS THIS SONG AND HE HAD AN AMAZING VOICE WHEN HE WAS A YOUNG MAN AND RICHIE BLACK MORE PLAYS THE ELECTRIC GUITAR IN THIS SONG AND IAN PACE PLAYED THE DRUM'S AND ROGER GLOVER PLAYS THE ELECTRIC BASS GUITAR IN THIS SONG AND JOHN LORD PLAYS THE ELECTRIC ORGAN IN THIS SONG AND SADLY JOHN LORD DIED AND i WENT TO A DEEP PURPLE CONCERT 50 YEARS AGO IN MELBOURNES FESTIVAL HALL AND iT WAS SO LOUD THAT MY EARS RANG FOR TWO DAYS AFTER THE CONCERT AND THE SUPPORT BAND WAS THE LITTLE RIVER BAND AND GLENN SHORAK SINGS A SONG CALLED it's A LONG WAY THERE AND HE SINGS A SONG CALLED CURIOSITY KILLED THE CAT 😺 AND HE WAS A GREAT SINGER IN THE LITTLE RIVER BAND 😁
Back in the day, video recording was very expensive. So the BBC didn't have the money to do second takes - they asked the audience not to make any noise. Or it was them repressed Brits. It is also amazing, all in one take, no autotune all analogue no digital whatsoever.
You picked a stellar performance to watch!!! I loved the album In Rock when it came out in 1970 and the live version. Oh yezzz! ❤❤👍👍🤘🤘🎶. I really enjoyed your reaction to this. We had such great music in the yesteryears.
Jon Lord is the primary reason I tried learning and played keyboard as a teen. RIP Got to see these guys 4 times, 70, 74, 85, and 97. Totally awesome each time.
I'm not really much of a Deep Purple fan, but this particular song is quite possibly in my all time top three hard rock songs. Just awesome. I feel both sorry for and jealous of the audience - I'm with Donna in spirit, but honestly in real life I would probably have been like Kathy and done what I was told!
Saw them 2 times both in 1985. Texas jam Dallas cotton bowl. The perfect strangers tour. I have a concert shirt that is long sleeves and on the sleeve are keyboards.
Yes back in the day, it was considered rude to be loud or make noise as part of a studio audience on tv, plus they didn't want excess noise obstructing the audio, as technology was not as advanced.
Obviamente, la señora mayor disfruta más con la canción. El grado de interés es directamente proporcional con la edad...aparentemente. Gran Banda, super canción, un himno del rock. Felicidades a Kathy, Lulu y Donna por apreciarlo.
The best is the lady on the right enjoy the music. The best !

great british band

Love how everyone's eyes get wider as it progresses. Phew.
The "piano" was actually a Hammond organ and needed a master like Jon Lord to play it. Not only did he have two sets of keys to contend with, but also the levers to push and pull above those. Can you imagine the proficiency you need for that?
Fun reaction. Very enjoyable to see new exposure to a legendary live performance.
Glad you enjoyed it
Thank you so much for sharing this vid.
To me he’s one of the greatest rock vocalists of all time. I sometimes listen to this on repeat. PS mum. You have a great accent.
Thanks
This was filmed at Granada Television studios in Manchester, England on July 17, 1970. There were several other songs filmed for this television special called “Doing Their Thing: Deep Purple” that’s also on UA-cam.
'Strange Kind of Woman' live from 1970 is a much watch for lovers of Gillan and Blackmore...human guitar v guitar
My favorite is the pianist hair too...👍
Another great Deep Purple performance would be most definitely the live performance of the song “Burn” at the California Jam.
So fun to look your reaction to this.....for me this is the best rocksong ever written. Thanks ladies :)
Thanks for watching
Back in the day, video recording was very expensive. So the BBC didn't have the money to do second takes - they asked the audience not to make any noise. Or it was them repressed Brits. It is also amazing, all in one take, no autotune all analogue no digital whatsoever.
You picked a stellar performance to watch!!! I loved the album In Rock when it came out in 1970 and the live version. Oh yezzz! ❤❤👍👍🤘🤘🎶. I really enjoyed your reaction to this. We had such great music in the yesteryears.
Ian Gillian is still leading the current line up of Deep Purple at 78 years old now
Gillan, not Gillian.
@@erikthompson619 I apologize for have a bad keyboard - almost everyone knew what I meant
Ian is one of the best rock singers ever❤️❤️❤️
The audience were so still because they had never heard anything like this before.
The audience was told that they should be quiet during recording
Jon Lord is the primary reason I tried learning and played keyboard as a teen. RIP Got to see these guys 4 times, 70, 74, 85, and 97. Totally awesome each time.
Saw them Live at the Seattle Center Coliseum with ELO in the early 70's, they were known as the loudest band in the world, what a concert, just Epic!!
FYI: On the original sound track of Jesus Christ Super Star, Ian was Jesus
Deep Purple are my favourite band and this song live is the absolute best
Your reaction to it is absolutely awesome
Thank you
Love your reaction especially your mom on the right
Thanks
Ian Gillan lead vocals
Richie Blackmore lead guitar
John Lord keyboards and Hammond organ
Roger Glover bass
Ian Paice drums and percussion
I'm not really much of a Deep Purple fan, but this particular song is quite possibly in my all time top three hard rock songs. Just awesome. I feel both sorry for and jealous of the audience - I'm with Donna in spirit, but honestly in real life I would probably have been like Kathy and done what I was told!
Lol
DEEP PURPLE FOREVER!!!
One of my favourite bands of all time. I had this song on an 8 track in my 73 Mustang!
Watching you ladies react to this live made me happier than I expected. 😊 Lulu, I would love to have yours or Ians hair. Puffy or otherwise. 😍
😊 thank you
The mam knows 👍👍👍
Saw them 2 times both in 1985. Texas jam Dallas cotton bowl. The perfect strangers tour. I have a concert shirt that is long sleeves and on the sleeve are keyboards.
Indeed they must be still becose it whas recording for the BBC tv and radio. Best anti war ever. Great reaction. 💯❤️🇮🇹
Thanks
They are touring this year. They have just made another studio album. xx
Yes back in the day, it was considered rude to be loud or make noise as part of a studio audience on tv, plus they didn't want excess noise obstructing the audio, as technology was not as advanced.
The lead guitarist is Ritchie Blackmore and his band Blackmore’s Night has a fantastic minstrel sounding song called Ghost of a Rose, beautiful song
Awesome reaction! I saw them do this live!!! It was beyond description!!!! I love how Lulu always notices the hair!! 😀 Thank you! ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Our pleasure!
Obviamente, la señora mayor disfruta más con la canción. El grado de interés es directamente proporcional con la edad...aparentemente. Gran Banda, super canción, un himno del rock. Felicidades a Kathy, Lulu y Donna por apreciarlo.
love to see the sister on the right getting into this! thank you so much for reacting to this
Our pleasure!
