I really liked the Klon sound, it was clear, direct, focused, powerful, defined notation and attack.
Man you sure sold alot of soul foods with this vid. I bought one cause of this vid-
I love when you do the riff at 1:27 on your demos.
Before watching this video I didn't even think I liked the sound of Klon style pedals. This is the best sounding video on the subject I have seen (which includes videos using original Klon Centaurs). I'm now off to watch the rest of your videos on this subject.
very nice playing, very nice tone
I went Soul Food after watching your video, but only JHS modded is offered from the dealer in my country for now. Just love it!
A=Soul Food
B=Klon
Again your clean sound is genius.
Wow you know how to set an amp!
No clue as to which is which, but both sound great. With the cost difference, though, the Soul Food is obviously a better value.
I have the JHS modded version. It’s amazing at ANY price point.
I know the Soul Food has a little more treble but once you adjusted it, I couldn't tell the difference. Pretty amazing.
I'm a few years late to the video but you just convinced me to buy a Soul Food.
I recently did. Could not shake off the smile. Soul Food into a slightly overdriven Orange Amp = bad ass!
@@SirLunchalot2907 I'm sitting in the studio as I type this and just layed bass tracks with the bass Soul Food. It is the most deliciously, growly tone that keeps perfect clarity.
Clean Boost/Low medium gain, i'd vote A but once you get the gain up pretty high I think they sound similar enough. B maybe even sounds better.
I can tell A is the Soul Food just because of the louder footswitch click that a lot of EHX pedals have. Both sound killer but the KTR is ever so slightly nicer to me. However difference in tone is not worth the difference in price. The Soul Food is the winner for me
Love these blind tests. I can't tell. I'm going A soul food, B Klon. Nice work!
Love the vids Shane keep em coming!
Im guessing you realize that your lick at 59secs is your go to lick right? Man youre killing me with it haha! Its not a Shane vid without it lol ;)
I have to say that this is the most intelligent 'comparison' video I have seen. It's amazing how many of these videos I've seen where the player either hasn't thought of it, or simply cannot bring himself to play the same thing - in the same way - twice, so that there is some chance of actually making sense of what I'm hearing. Thank you for an intelligently done video!
I like A better, but can't decide which one is which. A is Soul Food and B is Klon
Pedal B has a noticeably smoother top end.
Now off to look at the results. :)
"A" sounds pretty good!
Great job on the comparison. I'm coming in late and I already know the answer. This is the first video I can actually hear some differences. Klon has more detail in the top and fatter muddier bass. After the tone and volume adjustment it's very hard to tell the difference. This is not a Gold Klon and I'm not sure how much that matters but... yes there is always a BUT... for the $$$ I'm buying the EH and another plexi with what I saved :)
I know this video is old, but I'm guessing A is the KTR because I have played one and it has a recognizable harmonic something (sweetness, sizzle?) in the mids and I hear that on the A example.
Edit: watched the results and I was wrong, and surprised, actually. Need to check out the Soul food one of these days.
Great comparison as always Shane, my favourite online reviewer . I can't hear a difference. Does this mean the price of Klon pedals will drop to £50? (Uk price of Soul Food).
Wow liked A all the way through and was very surprised to see what it turned out to be! Icing on the cake that I already own it.
B is the soul food, now i have this pedal and i love it but they are so smilar!
Love em both but judging by the prise my soul food wins, great pedal.
Can't wait to see which one was which!
Just saw this. I love the old blind test. My best answer is,,,,, I have no clue at all. Now I'll go see if I am right!
I'm hearing some audio clipping from the recording. That's not part of the drive coming from the pedals, right? Using studio monitors and Audiotechnica headphones, btw
Either way, that Tele sounds superb.
Never played a Klon or a Soulfood, so can not tell the difference. But I prefer A.
B just really jumped out at me! I think it's the Klon.
I thought A sounded better on all but the highest gain setting, so I am HOPING it is the SF, because if it actually sound better than a Klon, I will buy one.
How do you mic your amps?
I've got to say...I don't care.
For the price, and the fact that they both sound killer, you almost have to get a Soul Food...(I know I am).
In fact I'd buy the Soul Food *just* for the buffer, and still feel that I was getting a bargin...which it would be.
But since this is fun, I'm going to guess that A is the Soul Food....and that's just a guess...again, they both sound great.
As you mentioned, B has a bit more volume and clarity, even after you equalised them. My guess is that B is the Klon, and A is the Soul Food... but both sound great and in a live situation, either is more than acceptable.
Which was which in the end? I’m guessing the klon was B?
Shane, based on the pedal positions on the board, and where your leg is going to click each pedal on and off, I can conclusively say that B is the Klon and A is the Soul Food. Unless, of course, you have switched them around on the board to trick us :) However, if I am right about just seeing your leg, may I suggest moving the camera up to waist height so as to not provide any visual cues for your next blind test?
Nevertheless, great demo as always! The gold in this video came around 4:43 when you matched the tones up. It proved how nice the Soul Food is, especially at it's price point.
Both lovely. A ia probablt SF as it seems to have a bit less Klonnish presence.
I reckon the Tumnus and the Keeley Oxblood are the best K-style pedals out there.
I think B is the klon just mostly based on the foot switch and but also slightly more clarity.
Both great. Preferred B
Man how time flies....
SQUIER CLASSIC VIBE TELE!
i'm no expert on klons, so i don't really know which is which. i think i prefer B though. seems a bit more clear, and a little smoother. they sound really similar though.
B is awesome!
wich one is the original?
I like my soul food, but sometimes it seems to sound I guess thin would be the right word. But with my mxr equalizer it straightens out
Quite honestly, I can't hear too any difference in my tv. I will buy the Soul Food. Thank you for the test.
I can hear the difference but I couldn't say which I like better. Minor tweaks would probably even them right out.
Gain down volume up I slightly preferred B. Both at 12 I preferred A. Wide open gain they were even. (I bought a Soul Food largely on the back of this demo)
I would have to say that A is the Klon KTR and B is the EHX. Once the volume was turned up to max it was harder to tell them apart. Being used as a Boost the A-pedal sounded fuller than the B-pedal to my ears.
I don't have any experience with either pedal, so this is a total guess, but I think A is the Soul Food and B is the KTR. I guess I have a 50% chance of being right.
I have no idea which is which, but I like A better. I hope it's the Soul Food as it's a lot cheaper :P
B sounded slightly less brittle and a bit more rounded in low mids. I have no idea which one was which but I preferred B.
Honestly, they sound so similar that I'd go with the Soul Food easily.
Liked B more for a boost. A best in medium gain range, as B had too much bite. Once you equalized them, I couldn’t tell them apart in a band setting.
This is why I got a Meat and 3 modded Soul Food. It does sparkle.
Hmm, you really confused me! :)
I'm gonna say, A is the Klon, and B is the Soul Food. Let's give this a shot!
B is the klon, to be honest its a tough call. A hair more low end with the klon but that could be dealt with nudging a dial. Soul food all the way! Cheers Shane!
Both great, but I prefer A by nose. I hope it's the affordable Soul Food!
Very close to me. The first pedal (A) sounds like Soul Food to me. The second pedal (B) Klon (?) is has a bit of a smoother tone.
Not enough difference to warrant the price difference to me.
intheblues over 36000 views and still no results posted!?!
Great video brah, very fair and excellently balanced, next time don't give the game away with your feet (unless that was intentional deception). Thanks, now the results please
Thank man, you sold me EHX :-)
There wasn't enough difference between the two to call a winner. I wouldn't be surprised if there was as much difference in tone between two examples of the same model pedal.
There is some transients in A that are not present in B. I think B is less compressed and more articulate. They both sound great and each pedal might be better served with a different guitar and amp
A is the soul food and B is the klon, the footswitch on le the soul food is louder, the klon has a deeper clic and is probably smoother (higher quality switch), If I hand't have heard the footswitch it would have been a wild guess lol.
Otherwise they sound pretty much the same, but yeah the klon is louder (maybe due to a higher mid range and bottom range). I'll be getting my self one of those soul foods hun hun thanks
B has a bit more bass but they could easily be EQ'd to sound exactly the same. Spending all of that extra money for the Klon would be foolish in my opinion. My Soul Food is on order ! Great demo, thanks
Either pedal sound fantastic. My guts say B is the Klon sounds a bit more rich/full. That said, I might get a Soul Food....
I like A more
Both sounded great, I'm going for "A" as the Soul Food. That's purely on where your leg was moving too and the shots of the pedal board before you started playing :-)
ahah play with your ears dude, h
ere is a "blind" test lol
A) soul, b)KTR
The soul foods I've try compared to other klones were just a little bit thinner.
Great video!
Yet, from the positioning of the pedals and your stepping, I could figure the A is the Soul Food and the B is the Klon. Too bad I liked the most expensive better (as usual... =/)
That's what I spotted 👍🏻 the positioning I mean
The comp at 4:48... you hit the sweet spot and I KNEW which was which \m/ You can take the tone at 4:57 and cash that at the bank
set the same, soul food tends to be darker. leads a lot of people to say the "magic" isn't there, but really it's just a tone knob with a slightly different range.
I couldn't really figure out which is which. For me it's a sign of how good the Soul Food really is, at a price that is much less than the Klon.
Both sound great. I'm not even going to guess. A seemed to have slightly more low mids than B.
A sounds better to me.
I don't know which one it is, but it sounds better to me. If it's Soul Food, I'll be ordering one tonight.
A Wins at low gain and B wins at high Gain :-)
Haven’t checked yet, but B has got more balls and stank factor to it. Based on that I’m going with B as the Klon, A as the EHX.
Both sound great and I could hardly make out a difference between the two. That being said I'd purchase the least expensive one out of the two which is the soul food... I'm guessing a klon b soul food...
How many mA for ktr?
Hi I got both devices - the A is in my opinion the Soul Food, the B is the Klon, it is is just better, I think
It is pretty hard with PC stuff, but I pick B for the KTR
I was certain that A was the soul food, and I was right (bound to happen eventually). The biggest difference is likely the diodes. It reminds me of the difference between RAT pedals with silicon and germanium diodes- though not quite as marked. The Klon (germanium diodes) has a hair more upper mid bite, warmer lower mids, and a slightly rounder distortion- while the Soul Food (silicon diodes) has a sharper attack with more even harmonics. It's really, really subtle though.
tl;dr: They sound kinda sorta different 'cause buzzwords.
A is definitely the soul food. That pedal gets a lot thinner as you crank the gain up. Not an issue with the JHS modded version. Can't beat it for $135. What's the Klon? $300? Still less than half the price.
Tone of B is a bit sweeter, but the gain structure of A is better
A is a bit cleaner, B is slightly rounder and warm. I'd say A=Soul Food. I'll watch the result video right after and if I'm wrong, I'll buy the Soul Food soon. haha
Both tones at noon is the worst, you have to match them sonically. Different pot brands have slightly different tapers 🥱 Joy to the world!!! He does fix it 🤩
I keep saying to people that soul food is one of the best drives out there. Beautiful and simple. People dont wanna know cost it doesn't cost enough. Haha. For all the boutique companies out there charging hundreds for pedals, electro Harmonix are still putting out some of the best stuff for the money
There would not be any patron that I am playing for that are going to know the difference. The sound are very close with "B" being a crisper. Would have to say that is the Klon. So let's see, $600 Klon vs my Soul food at $80 bucks. Got to say Soul food is the winner.
Answer soul food normal o jhs???? Thanks
A: SF, B:Klon
This has to be the closest A/B ever.
But B has that little bit more depth and 'substance' to it, it just has to be the Klon, how else should a 5-6 times higher price be justified ;)
I just saw that everyone else so far has the same opinion... this could be the first unanimous decision.
A is a lot thinner, B sounds awesome! Which one is B?
B is the KTR, or not :) liked this this test too much
Low - Mid gain pedal A!
High gain - maybe B is a bit nicer but still A is ok.
A - Soul Food B - KTR. I think B sounds a tad smoother all the way around.
At about 04:48 to 05:00 or so in this video, I thought that "B" was very obviously the better sounding of the two in one phrase; it leaped right out at me... Otherwise, most of the time they sound very similar. FEEL and response just might be a little more noticeable to a given player, though, huh?
I haven't tried a Klon before so I really don't know how it sounds, but to me B sounds a bit more balanced and refined than A.
A is more clean, glassy. B is more warm, fuzzy. I think A is Klon KTR
Just Bought Soul Food Pedal
I know A - was the soul food, there is a loud pop voice when you stomp on it.
B - Klon
A - Soul food
I could tell by the first a and b part but i can also tell by where your foot is going. Haha left is Klon right is soul food.
This is probably the closest blind test you've done, it's really difficult to tell but I think the A is KTR and B is Soul Food.
I have both, the soulfood isnt even a klon clone nor does it sound like one. I like the treble boost on the soulfood, that’s the only reason I use it. When I a/b those 2 pedals I was infuriated that the soulfood is compared to it so often and not a treble booster
Thanks Shane, I have no idea which is which lol So I guess B is the Klon but I'm hoping that B is the MUCH cheaper EHX. I'd still buy the EHX anyway on principal of EHX offering a viable alternative to the outrageously expensive KLON unless of course the KLON guarantees to improve my playing and income to Bonamassa levels.
