    Any garage rocker that's bathed in the power of an open E chord in front of a sweetly overdriven amp can attest to the harmonic beauty that this combo can produce. Hell, with just the right amount of grit, that sound can pretty much make you feel like you rule the world. But sometimes you want to push your amp just a little bit more and that is where the never-ending realm of dirt boxes comes into play.
    Since the late '60s, the brain trust at Electro-Harmonix has churned out nearly every flavor of overdrive, distortion, and fuzz imaginable. One of their latest creations, the Soul Food, is an unabashed attempt to deliver an affordable version at one of the most mythical and hyped pedals ever created, the Klon Centaur. Although the Centaur is technically discontinued, it isn't uncommon to find a used on eBay for around $2,000, which is well out of reach of most mortals. The Centaur became legend for organic, transparent, detailed overdrive tones, and you can hear Electro Harmonix' emphasis on those qualities in the Soul Food-a pedal that can be had for the price of a pair of sneakers.
    Before I dug into the Soul Food, I popped open the back of the sturdy enclosure to see what made this little bugger tick. Like the Centaur, the Soul Food uses a TL072 op-amp and a dual-gang Gain control, which makes the gain and volume controls more interactive.

    This is the great thing about having an accomplished player like John Bohlinger doing demos. He really understands the gear and his playing shows clearly what this pedal can do :) Thanks for this demo!

    imo not transparent as this is a very midrangey pedal once u start pushing the drive side...but its a very good pedal with lots of application, alone or stacking with other drives....i especially like the tone rolled back and the drive kicked up to 3 and beyond...probably the best demo I've seen John...you really nailed what it can do :)

    Great video, got mine last week and it is my favorite pedal. I play a Strat, Tele and a Les Paul through a Mesa Boogie Rectoverb 50 comb. The only other pedals I use are a Line 6 delay and Ibanez Screaming Demon Wha pedal (soon to replace) for another brand, any recommendation's, This SoulFood is great food for the SOUL

    What the hell does “transparent sounding” actually mean? It has become accepted lingo when reviewing pedals but I have no idea what it means.

    • @holdencaulfield2
      @holdencaulfield2 4 роки тому +2

      it means it doesn't affect the characteristic tone of your amp, like the way amp emulating pedals do

    Be aware guys that if you would install battery into this thing you won't be able to close the lid completely. This is design flaw, so no moisture or dust proof in this case.

      Believe it or not, it's a huuuge difference. Especially when recording. It just gives a more natural and fuller sound. Simply put, it gives it a bite that you quite can't get when you go direct.
