  • I've been wanting to do this video for a while, how does the inexpensive EHX Soul Food compare to a real Klon? I couldn't get a Centaur, so I had to use a KTR. Thanks to all the people who have subscribed. (Yes I am aware that I spelled Centaur wrong in the video!).

Here’s why the Klon hype is silly for most people.
Spending $75-100 for an OD pedal that you’re going to run as a clean boost is logical (IE soul food)
Spending $2000 on an original Klon to run it as a clean boost = ridiculous.
For the life of me I will never understand why people shell out for a Klon and just run it as a clean boost.
It sounds tonally unremarkable in this setting and doesn’t do much more than any transparent to moderate gain OD pedal other pedal run in the same way.
To me the Klon has beautiful gain, so why is no one using it?
But even so, it will never justify the hype or the $2000 collectors premium.
I wouldn’t even spring for a KTR honestly, even though it’s dramatically less.
For this type of sound I use a Copper Sound Foxcatcher. Ranges from sweet and Transparent to syrupy and full. Hands down the best “always on” pedal for a clean style tube amp (IE My fender deluxe Reverb or my 67 Bassman head)

I use my Soul Food as a Clean Boost to drive the TS-Mini. I also have the Soul Food in buffered mode because like the original Klon pedal they were never designed to run as True Bypass. The only time I use the Soul Food on its own is if I'm running my Carr Rambler well past 3 O'Clock on the volume with the mids maxed out. Power wise I use a Voodoo Labs PP2+ as the original power Pack is a bit too noisy for my liking.

I love the sound of either of these pedals with my TS mini! Tone for daaayys!

I have both the soul food and the ts mini. They’re both PHENOMENAL pedals. I use the ts mini with a cali76 and to boost my kot and that thing sounds just about as good as any tubescreamer ever made. When it comes to the soul food, it’s a precise “klon”...there’s just literally no difference in sound. Between those two pedals, there’s absolutely no reason to spend $700-2000 on an old ts or klon. Unless you’re a collector, it just doesn’t make sense...

Dude... I had no idea the Soul Food has an option for true bypass or buffered bypass. I bought mine used, without the box or manual, if there is one. Gonna have to look into this.

I was never a Klon fan until I played the KTR.

I don’t hear enough difference to chuck out a ton of money on the Klon.

I’d say the JHS mod gets closer to the old Centaur.

The soul food has a buffer switch inside. When you open your soul food you will see that it has less parts inside then the ones that have NY stamped on its face. Google inside a soul food and first thing you will see is that a big red electronic part it’s missing in yours then the ones in the photos. There are more differences if you look closely. Cheers!

Jason Ayala Spare . Yes it is pretty amazing. Don’t forget to use its original power supply that is a 9.6 volts. It makes a difference to the bass and treble.

@@vintagepipesnightmares Was the Soul Food sold with a power supply? That would be very aberrant.
I have three EHX 9 volt power supplies that I bought by themselves.
Do you think they'd make a difference on the Soul Food?
They do say 9.6 volts... but almost all "9 volt" power supplies supply over 9 volts, if you meter them, they're usually up to around 10 volts...

@@vintagepipesnightmares Thats interesting. What if you use the pedal into an independent power supply? I guess you’d miss out on the benefits of the original power supply provided?

    Well, I have the Soul Food, and I don't like it's sound, too inarticulate... but I think it's just my amp I don't like. I don't need a $5,000 pedal, I need a $1,000 amp...
