After trying lots of different pedals....firstly, playing at gigging levels makes a difference. I found a tube screamer to be very useful when playing loud, and pretty irrelevant at bedroom levels. I returned to guitar after 12 years exclusively on drums and made this exact error - more time on effects than my playing. Time to do what matters the most by far. Thx for this!
Paul, this is such a good video. This really helps people who are flooded by release after release and do not know the right direction and this narrows the field. It helps.
Hi Paul. I'm one year on from buying my first electric guitar since given up playing way back in 1992. I'm at the "what pedals should I use" stage in my musical journey. I can't help thinking Phaser and Distortion but hearing these 4 pedals together is changing my thoughts. Great video!
Truth be told: the amps and guitars we have in 2021 are way better quality than what they had in the 60’s and 70’s. Much tighter tolerances these days. Guitars used to be so inconsistent that Eric Clapton pieced together one Strat from 17 Strats. The fogies don’t agree with this and will argue to the end but the truth is in today’s manufacturing know how. Granted these modern amps won’t be serviceable for as long as the old turret board designs but they’re cheaper (adjusted for inflation) and are more consistent. Having played a Blues Deluxe, there is a really bad shrillness to the treble that I never liked but there is a simple mod to tame it. Try one cranked in person and you’ll hear the treble. It’s bright. I heard it’s a trick to make you think the amp has more volume than it actually does. Sold my Fender off for a British amp and couldn’t have been happier.
Just discovered this channel...really love it...Paul has such an organic human approach. I played for years without any pedals...various amps. Marshall, Vox Fender...Vox AC30 has been my go to. The world of pedals is daunting and I try to keep it simple. I bought the Soulfood, plus four more pedals at little used guitar shop in Matlock UK while working on a film there last year. Spent all of my downtime messing around with them. The others which I love but are a little quirky, are 90's era Danelectros (Dan echo Delay, Cool Cat Chorus, Tuna Mel Tremolo, and Jangle Box. Feels though like a need an OD pedal.
I owned a kinsman pedal bought it for £50 and played gigs with it for a couple of years with a band unfortunately it has gave up and im now looking for something different.
Tip to beginners and intermediates. The fact that is not featured in these really good videos is that the heart of your tone comes from three places: 1. your fingers; 2. your amp; and 3. your pickups/guitar. If you are looking to get your tone out of a pedal, you are looking in the wrong place. Pedals are tools. The good one's are designed to take a good tone and color it in a very simple and specific way. For example, a good overdrive will work with your amp and guitar, not against it. In my experience, guitar players that come strolling in with these massive pedal boards chok full of every pedal imaginable have the worst tones. They've crossed over the line from guitar with effects to effects with guitar. If your just starting out, here are some good pedals that you should own: 1. Ibanez Tube Screamer - any model will do. I prefer the Mini; 2. TC Electronics Stereo Chorus -(not the Corona Chorus) They're not easy to find these day, but, if you find one, grab it. 3. Boss Chromatic Tuner 4. Boss Compressor (optional, depending on guitar/amp configuration) That's it. You don't need anything else. I played over 300 shows in every size venue imaginable with nothing but a Peavey Classic 20 through a 2x12 cab, an Ibanez Tube Screamer mini and a chromatic tuner. I've seen other pros play with less, just a really good amp like a Fender Bassman or a Vox AC30 plugged straight in. When it comes to effects, more is usually less. Cheers!
I do the same kinda thing with my BOSS SD-1. Even if I want “clean” I just max the volume and turn down the drive. Boost the tone and I get a treble boost type sound
This is great! Last year I put a new rig together and now I find myself just using the 2 drives and delay, even though I bought 6 pedals. Through my Princeton I just don’t lack anything this type around. Less can be more!
My favorite thing about Paul is how excited he gets when ANYONE plays ANY lick longer than 2 seconds... You can tell he just Straight flat-out loves music...
as a life long "acoustic guitar guy" I'm really appreciating learning about all the possible sounds and how to get the sounds I like from my new electric. Thank you as well for really well done camera work.
Thank you for this video! I used to have loads of pedals and multi efx, but over the last decade or so, have stripped back to only 4 that's nearly similar to your setup (replacing the reverb for a chorus, since my amp has a reverb). But I love that recommendation to kick off with the overdrive and leave the colour for last and it does sound much better (to me, anyway) than what I previously used.
Pete Thorn and Paul Davids together! Fantastic to see two of my favourites together like this - would love to see the two of them playing at the same time. Hard to when it's put together quickly like this, but man could we all geek out!
For my own playing style I'd probably drop the reverb and get some modulation instead (Chorus, Tremelo, Univibe, something like that). Delay is fine, but maybe I'd get one with some more options (DIG dual delay, or one with tap divisions and modulation).
Pete, I also heard those interviews with Tom Morello, and Trey Of Phish fame also said something like that. Trey said something about it’s better to be familiar with the gear that you have then to be buying the latest and great all the time. That resonated with me so much that I just started seeing how many different sounds I could get with the gear I have. So happy I did that. But I did love what Tom did with a whammy that I bought one last winter, and I’m still trying to work it in.

Thinline + Fender + BOSS + Suhr + EHX + Fender amp + Paul Davids channel = cheerful heart.
For slightly overdriven sounds I like to start with a compressor. It makes the following overdrive/amp give a smoother breakup
Paul: GAS (Gear Acquisition Syndrome) is bad.
Also Paul: TOP 4 pedals for starters
I returned to guitar after 12 years exclusively on drums and made this exact error - more time on effects than my playing. Time to do what matters the most by far. Thx for this!
Your both so comfortable to watch 👏
Two of the best guitar tutors on the net, in the same room ! Thank you guys.
...but buying new gear is much easier than practicing!
😣
plus, you can tell yourself you're practising, when you're really just pissing about with your gear.
Someone tell this to The Edge
Just quit your job! You'll have more time to practice and less money for gear!
Por Que no las dos?
...so is watching guys play guitar on UA-cam...but I'm guilty of both
Paul, this is such a good video. This really helps people who are flooded by release after release and do not know the right direction and this narrows the field. It helps.
One of the best vids on pedals ever! Oh, and can you please tell me about that beautiful Thinline Telecaster?
Good choices. I didn't know about the darker delay on my Boss Digital delay! thanks!
Great video as usual Paul! a big thanks from France !
Hi Paul. I'm one year on from buying my first electric guitar since given up playing way back in 1992. I'm at the "what pedals should I use" stage in my musical journey. I can't help thinking Phaser and Distortion but hearing these 4 pedals together is changing my thoughts.
Great video!
Hey paul, thanks for the for the video. As an aspiring musician, I must say, I am a fan of your videos. Keep Rockin' 🤘🤘🤘
This video was 2 years ago and yet it is the best advice to me right now that 4 pedals is enough. And get into practice.
So weird! Was going to ask exactly this question. Thanks from Australia!
Paul's channel is truly the best guitar oriented one. It's just so much to learn
That guitar and amp sound awesome without the pedals.
I am a touring musician for years and this is exactly my pedal set up. 2 drive pedals, one delay + tremolo and reverb. Thank you guys!
Pete is the man! Great guy!
Thanks Andre!!
I have been avoiding the electric guitar because I have no idea where to start. THIS IS SO GREAT! Thank you!!
Thank you so much for this interview it was great..
Great guest Pete Thorn. Congrats to both.
Omg.. option anxiety!
That is the exact thing I get when I think or look at gear
Paul, thanks, really enjoy both your channel and Pete’s so it was great to see you both collaborate.
If your just starting out, here are some good pedals that you should own:
1. Ibanez Tube Screamer - any model will do. I prefer the Mini;
2. TC Electronics Stereo Chorus -(not the Corona Chorus) They're not easy to find these day, but, if you find one, grab it.
3. Boss Chromatic Tuner
4. Boss Compressor (optional, depending on guitar/amp configuration)
That's it.
Cheers!
That is so valuable info, thank you
Pete is incredible to watch, could listen and watch him all day long. Great work guys, love it.
Kind regards
A Pedal Pervert
Great video with an incredible guest! Thanks for posting.
SoulFood is my ALWAYS ON pedal.
I do the same kinda thing with my BOSS SD-1. Even if I want “clean” I just max the volume and turn down the drive. Boost the tone and I get a treble boost type sound
Likewise! My Soul Food is always on.
This is great! Last year I put a new rig together and now I find myself just using the 2 drives and delay, even though I bought 6 pedals. Through my Princeton I just don’t lack anything this type around. Less can be more!
"Explain your back story briefly Paul."
**Paul monologue cut 2 seconds later**
My favorite thing about Paul is how excited he gets when ANYONE plays ANY lick longer than 2 seconds... You can tell he just Straight flat-out loves music...
This just hit me and I maybe wayyy late to the Pete looks like club but I think Pete Thorn looks like Josh Brolin. That is all. Great vid by the way.
Overdrive : Option 5 Destination overdrive
Delay : Vahlbruch Spacetime
Reverb : Fender Marine Layer
Distorsion : MI Audio Megalith Delta
And gosh, that Suhr Pete Thorn signature is georgeous !!!!

Paul's videos are just magic
Liked it with my 10 other accounts too.
Are you new to UA-cam?
He's been around for a while and one of my favorite guitar youtubers.
as a life long "acoustic guitar guy" I'm really appreciating learning about all the possible sounds and how to get the sounds I like from my new electric. Thank you as well for really well done camera work.
1.Overdrive
2.Flanger
3.Distortion
4.Sustainer
Thank you for this video! I used to have loads of pedals and multi efx, but over the last decade or so, have stripped back to only 4 that's nearly similar to your setup (replacing the reverb for a chorus, since my amp has a reverb). But I love that recommendation to kick off with the overdrive and leave the colour for last and it does sound much better (to me, anyway) than what I previously used.
Pete Thorn and Paul Davids together! Fantastic to see two of my favourites together like this - would love to see the two of them playing at the same time. Hard to when it's put together quickly like this, but man could we all geek out!
This is a great clip. Thank you. I’m just starting out with pedals. Gonna buy the first one and play for 3 months before I buy the next.
1. Overdrive: Soul Food (alt.: Tumnus, Archer,...)
2. Delay: Boss DD-7
3. Distortion: Suhr Riot
4. Reverb: Marine Layer (alt.: Hall of Fame, Blue Sky, Ventris, RV-500,...)
Chain: Soul Food -> Riot -> DD-7 -> Marine Layer
For my own playing style I'd probably drop the reverb and get some modulation instead (Chorus, Tremelo, Univibe, something like that). Delay is fine, but maybe I'd get one with some more options (DIG dual delay, or one with tap divisions and modulation).
My four pedals are:
Compressor - SP comp
Overdrive - TS9
Chorus - Boss Super Chorus
Delay - Joyo D Seed
I use the amp reverb (÷13)
Paul and Pete in the same video!? Take my like!
