Prefer the EH. Much clearer. A trick to fatten up the sound you are getting is to turn your amp up, and back off on the the guitar volume. Need to get those tubes working. That's what they did "back in the day". Watch any old footage of the greats. . .including Hendrix.
Great demo sound and format. But, this is one of the rare occasions where i don't really hear enough of a difference between two in a comparison. I found this/came here because of That Pedal Show's budget pedalboard, where Dan put a Soul Food into a Maxon analog delay, and the 'harshness' became beautiful. First time hearing a Soul Food that made me want one.
Excellent video from go: great layout/design and logo, professional presentation, 1st rate sound quality and one of the top features: an index for each segment! Thank you for taking the time and effort to make such a quality piece- as are all your installments.
Both pedals sound great. Kudos to EHX for making the SF Pedal modestly priced. This allows JHS to modify the circuitry adding tonal flexibility. Nothing wrong with either choice. Both great sounding.
I like the Soul Food pedal, and really I should probably say that I like EHX products in general. That said, of these two, I think that the modified version sounds better, and would be more useful for the music that I usually play. Great demo - thanks for sharing!
I agree about the treble gets too bright with single coil pups, I just picked one up yesterday but I don't need to put the treble to max and for 66 bucks with the power supply I can live with the stock pedal and tomorrow I will have my SG back at home so I can see how it works with humbuckers. Thanks for the vid I always like your reviews and lessons and your playing kicks ass.
I think I like the unmodified version better. The JHS seems to have a little more bottom end in some settings, but, it doesn't seem worth the extra cost. FWIW, I think the entire demo spent a bit more time (I know there are more variations of each main setting) on the JHS than the original. It didn't A/B symmetrically. Reviewer definitely prejudiced in favor of the JHS, so not a fair comparison, really. More like a JHS demo.
The most impressive part of this demo is your ability to switch on/off both pedals and still stay in time with the song. How many takes did it take not to mess up?
Texas Blues Alley Or just put a wooden board on both switches, so if you Hit the board, the one pedal switches of and the other switches on ;) Won't work for this pedal though, since the LED is next to the switch, but most peda;s I use have the indicator LED above the switch ;)
The JHS mod gives you 2 different clipping choices other than the original clipping. The middle position is more open, while the lower (which is the stock one I think) is more compressed, I like it for more driven tones. But for low gain sounds the upper 2 positions are great. And the meat knob is icing on the cake. Best 45$ ever spent for a mod!
A great comparison video. You are correct about the JHS having the thicker sound but it's almost double the price. I might be tempted to buy the original and maybe another great ,cheap EHX OD and stack them. I personally like the milder gain settings for both pedals and I think that's what made the Klon so appealing before it got a cult following, anyway, thanks again Anthony.
Honestly your guitar just sounds great, and i think that both of these pedals (the stock and modded) sound great on this guitar. I'm thinking of buying the Soul Food just to get a more transparent overdrive instead of the high gain from my Blackstar HT 40, but i'm skeptical because idk if my Ibanez Artcore AS73 will make the pedal shine like your Strat does.
HEY MAN I PLAY STRAT AN HT 40 I OWN ORIGINAL SOUL FOOD AN ITS AWESOME EVEN RUNNING IT INTO OUR DIRT CHANEL SOUNDS GOOD BRO BUT ITS GREAT FOR STACKING!!!! I STACK WITH A TS9 AND THE WITH A JOYO VINTAGE CLASSIC THE JOYO SOUNDS BETTER ITS CHEAPER ON EBAY!!! TONAL POSSIBILITIES ARE ENDLESS!!! IM PUTTING A CELESTION VINTAGE 30 I HAVE INTO THE AMP SO TS GONNA SOUND NICE!!! ROCK ON BRO!!!!
I bought the Soul Food around a year ago. Wasn’t looking for it. It was recommended by one of the manager of store I was in. Told me he had two of them on his board and raved how good they are. Under $100.00 bucks!! I’m thinking no way. This thing has to be a piece of shit. Wrong!!! Love it man!! Just before I bought the Friedman BE OD pedal. Was disappointed. Sounded pretty good at home although wayyyyy to much gain. More of a distortion pedal I think. Does have an internal pot to turn gain down. Like I said. It sounded good at home. I go to band rehearsal, go into a lead, all happy to hear it at volume. Doesn’t cut through the mix man!!!!! Buy the soul food and be happy. That thing kicks ass and cuts the mix very well. Less than half price.
On this vid demo the JHS 3way switching doesn't make the noticeable changes as mine does as in the definite volume changes,.. here it doesn't or as much ,strange(?) but it does have a big noticeable change in tone and volume changes along its paces with the dynamics here you cant mistake it and the best is guitar's volume has great transparent dynamics as you turn it up and down! Great OD without the comparison to the Klon as its clone!
I think the modded pedal loses a bit of the transparency of the original. Turn it into a different pedal. Maybe better overall but the original has a slightly better edge at lower gain settings. Hard to explain but if I want higher gain I'll use my Plimsoul.
It sounds little fuller in certain settings. I'm currently of the opinion that most mods are sort of a waste of money/time. They usually make a pedal sound a little better in certain settings and worse in others, or a little more bassy, or midrange, a little less/more gain etc, but I personally dont have any that I am totally excited about. My favorite one is actually the simplest one- On the Boss SD-1 remove C6. It gives it a nice openness in the top end. Second place is an Ibanez TS5 I worked on for hours to make it sound like an 808, and it sounds nice, but I dont use it. I think the Soul Food might sound a bit better with the simple germanium diodes swap. All the other stuff I dont know.
I think my problem might be that I mod pedals I dont quite like (SD-1, DS-1, TS5, Fab Tone, Grunge, etc) Then I end up with a pedal that I still dont like, but it sounds a little fuller or something. WHen you mod pedals they still sound like the original pedal, just a little more bass, treble, gain etc. Pedals I DO like, I dont want to mess with them. I have yet to end up with a pedal I love afterwards.
Very cool demo! I have the Soul Food (love it as it is) but I'm considering sending it to JHS for the mod. Your playing is outstanding. And I think the JHS mod gives the tone options a better quality. It's "juicier." Anyways, rock on!
For $66 bucks you can't beat it, plus they ship with a power supply. I was not "floored" by the tone of this unit but it does have its place for low drive needs.
If I should choose from these I surely grab the stock ona. Most of the modifications simply add bass and power and carefully ruin the original, tasty sound of the genuine product.
Loved the tones from the strat. Full and meaty just the way I like it. The Mod is obviously making the difference. Germanium as opposed to silicone with the choice switch added. I'm getting a similar boost with a grey faze and a GE7 but that's because I have them lying around. I have found a mod kit on eBay for £18. Might give it a try 😁👍🌈great guitar playing by the way plenty of chilli with the beef🤪
You have the stock ahead of the mod. Is the stock set to true bypass or buffer? I think it would make a difference because you could be sending the mod a hotter signal to start with. I have a stock and through experimenting I found that the buffer volume is equal to the pedal on volume knob set to about 9 or 10 o'clock.
I loved the demo, especially the moment you just play and switch, can i ask which guitar and especially pickups are installed on your guitar?? I also prefered the fullest tone of the moded version... Sounded great anyway !!!
Interesting demo. To me they both have merits. But what do you expect from tone obsessed gtr players? Anyway I noticed you are Zexcoil pickups. Sound amazing and gnarly. Which set?
Can someone help please? I traded another pedal for a second hand JHS Soul Food. Leaving the drive at 3 o'clock with the clip switch in standard position its quite overdriven (sounds about right), middle position is a LOT cleaner and a bit louder and in germanium/top position is a bit less gainy than standard but more throaty, less treble... Does that seen right or did i get sold a dodgy one? On the video all 3 positions are very similar. Not on mine. Thanks.
Just wiondering why your moaning about the treble on the origional, when you have it set so high? On mine i have to set it at 11 oclock when going through the normal channel of an ac15 as i find it too harsh :)
Texas Blues Alley Yes with you on that just tried it, i hadnt set the gain on mine over 12 oclock, just using it more as a cleanish boost : ) , in top boost channel of the vox does get a little bright lol with gain up
I mean yea of course the jhs mod is better because it’s gonna give you more versititly but I don’t think it’s worth the extra money for what it does idk and I love jhs
Jesus christ dude could you play some chords? Its an transparent OD, the point is clarity in between each note and especially with the treble eq, higher freq chords would be a highlight of the pedal.
to much treble ... pedal demo's - (Especially) Klon inspired pedals need to be done with an iconic sounding instrument. Those pickups may be cool to some, but most people looking into low gain, tone inspired pedals are not into funky sounding pickups, especially on a strat.
yea Texas blue I guess he wouldn't, im a guitar player myself I was just saying he was really good for his time... I didn't mean no disrespect toward any certain guitar player. I guess im sick of spending my money on pedals that won't do what they are advertised to do.
To much for nothing the mod of dear Josh. If you thing that this pedal in most of the cases works as booster, there is no difference at all, because the mods is the clipping. But even in the case of use it alone, you never compare side by side. Is it worth the double money? My mind is NOT. I could bye a better klone clone in this prise of mod soul food... Those pots in side are pin in the us Josh...
Texas Blues Alley And by "interesting" you mean of course "wrong". The modded pedal sounds even better than the already excellent stock. I love mine and am going to send it to JHS soon. Pretty sure I'm keeping this one for life. Hard to picture anyone unhappy with it.
Rich Monks There's no such thing as "wrong" or "better" when you're talking tone, because it's subjective. What works for you might not work for somebody else.
I don't understand it! The difference between the two souli food is hardly noticed, the price is reall big! We dont need this tiny difference, but even we did, it would be much to achive this and nuch more with a equalizer! We can get with 25 euros s behrinher, top guality eq, its clone of boss.. The 3 extra bottons of JHS mskes it complicated, if you can hear difference! Andertons in blind test gave BIG numper of points to the real soul fool even they are friends to Josh Scott!!! I like Scott much, but this is a failure that cost money and it's no eassy to use. Shame..
It may sound better in Madison Square Bedroom, but in a band mix I don't think the mods would be noticeable.
lol
let's be honest, 95% of pedals sold are assigned to bedroom duty. Some spend their whole lives on the even less challenging shelf duty or in-box duty.
Love it.. "MSB"... :)
I honestly like the original more. I like its bite/clucky-ness
The JHS can do that 😂
Prefer the EH. Much clearer. A trick to fatten up the sound you are getting is to turn your amp up, and back off on the the guitar volume. Need to get those tubes working. That's what they did "back in the day". Watch any old footage of the greats. . .including Hendrix.
that tubey sound in the begining is amazing better than anything i heard in my life.clean tubey and in your face melting tone to die for.god damn it.
Great demo sound and format. But, this is one of the rare occasions where i don't really hear enough of a difference between two in a comparison. That video is my now my budget board. I have those 4 pedals.
Excellent video from go: great layout/design and logo, professional presentation, 1st rate sound quality and one of the top features: an index for each segment!

Compulsor I appreciate the feedback, especially since you notice the details :-)
Awesome demo! Wish every pedal demo was this in-depth!

What pickups are they in the guitar? I’m looking and can’t find them.
@@matthewsutton9382 Zexcoil. A noiseless single coil style pickup. Nice fancy. Not sure if he uses the hot ones or regular
Both pedals sound great. Kudos to EHX for making the SF Pedal modestly priced. This allows JHS to modify the circuitry adding tonal flexibility. Nothing wrong with either choice. Both great sounding.
I like the darker sound of the regular version. Probably suits my playing more.
I like the Soul Food pedal, and really I should probably say that I like EHX products in general. That said, of these two, I think that the modified version sounds better, and would be more useful for the music that I usually play. Great demo - thanks for sharing!
Stock sounds just fine
I think the treble is set way to high. On stock EH Sounds best 10-12 depending on guitar
I agree about the treble gets too bright with single coil pups, I just picked one up yesterday but I don't need to put the treble to max and for 66 bucks with the power supply I can live with the stock pedal and tomorrow I will have my SG back at home so I can see how it works with humbuckers. I think I'm sold on the Zexcoils and the JHS mod. I'm a straight up DiMarzio user but those Zexcoils sound excellent.
I think I like the unmodified version better. The JHS seems to have a little more bottom end in some settings, but, it doesn't seem worth the extra cost.

Too many.
Texas Blues Alley You should invest in an AB/XY pedal so you can just do a one button switch with your foot.
TheEarthBlues2 Definitely. However I'll have to add indicators in post to show which pedal is on.
Texas Blues Alley If you put the AB in between the two pedals the indicator light on the switch will show which one is on.
Texas Blues Alley
Or just put a wooden board on both switches, so if you Hit the board, the one pedal switches of and the other switches on ;) Won't work for this pedal though, since the LED is next to the switch, but most peda;s I use have the indicator LED above the switch ;)
You are the master of pedal shootouts!
That is what I am saying, you have skills man. I much prefer the JHS version.
The JHS mod gives you 2 different clipping choices other than the original clipping. The middle position is more open, while the lower (which is the stock one I think) is more compressed, I like it for more driven tones.

You should've turned the treble down, then we could've heard what it sounds like without all of that shrill high end.
Honestly your guitar just sounds great, and i think that both of these pedals (the stock and modded) sound great on this guitar. Ordered. Killer review... thanks for the effort!
Great for the money! For a few extra $s you could have a Fulltone Plimsoul or Way Huge Saucy!
Different pedal and totally different dynamics with both. Can't compare them. Now using a soul food to push the plim soul would be wise.
I think the modded pedal loses a bit of the transparency of the original. Turn it into a different pedal. Maybe better overall but the original has a slightly better edge at lower gain settings. Hard to explain but if I want higher gain I'll use my Plimsoul.
@Stringprodigy- Could not disagree with you more :-)
I like the original one! And last thing that I want is more knobs and switches! It destroys its purpose.
It sounds little fuller in certain settings. I'm currently of the opinion that most mods are sort of a waste of money/time. Both good , and sound great with a Strat. Maybe the moded sound a but more hotter or warm.

I think I prefer the stock pedal. Maybe the JHS mod would work well for humbuckers.
JHS definately has the more grainy sound similar to centaurs. Yet i like the nonmod sf better more nasal and a bit less edgy.
If I should choose from these I surely grab the stock ona. Most of the modifications simply add bass and power and carefully ruin the original, tasty sound of the genuine product.

I believe they are true bypass.

I also prefered the fullest tone of the moded version...
Sounded great anyway !!!
Why would you use this when you own a FUCHS bj21 mkii? (I have the same amp but I stack OD pedals with a clean 50 watt combo)
Man.... this vid is sooooo 6 years ago... come on bro.
The original for me
For my taste, the original is way better!
nice plaYING .....JHS very versatile .. can the JHS sound exactly like the un mod-ed EHX? (might seem like a pointless question but it's not)
So you effectively have a Boss OD-3 in a more expensive housing??
Big Shout out for the Zexcoil pu,s.
JHS modded model most definitely
I've been looking at the "J. Rockett Blue Note OD". How does this pedal compare to that one?
Where I live, only the stock one is available anyway :/
Interesting demo. To me they both have merits. But what do you expect from tone obsessed gtr players? Anyway I noticed you are Zexcoil pickups. Sound amazing and gnarly. Which set?
Joey Stout Zexcoil Custom Set: txba.ly/v8je
well they both sound good. I would say it's a draw, no? Nice playing helps out the two.
Can someone help please? I traded another pedal for a second hand JHS Soul Food. Wish you would demo the JHS Charlie Brown....
They don’t sound different enough to make me buy one
IMHO they sound just a tad different.
mod this pedal and that pedal and this one too...if it's perfect, then it ain't rock n' roll!
The original soul food by a country mile
It sounds amazing! Can you do it with a set of P90s?
# ROOT with p90s you’d probably want the EHX since the P90s punch with the mid range.
I am sure that UA-cam doesn't help, but the original sounded ... oh God, here we go .... 'more transparent'
joesl8 It's probably just my ears ;-)
No se nota la mejora ostensiblemente como para hacer la modificación.
And where are the differences ?
wow. i like orig more. and i own it. ;) yay you saved me some $$
Just wondering, what kind of patch cables are you using? I really like those compact connectors...
Rhop Lava Cable
Just wiondering why your moaning about the treble on the origional, when you have it set so high? On mine i have to set it at 11 oclock when going through the normal channel of an ac15 as i find it too harsh :)
Because the treble on the original is too dull when it's rolled back (with gain high), but when turned up it takes on a harshness that is unpleasant.
Texas Blues Alley
Yes with you on that just tried it, i hadnt set the gain on mine over 12 oclock, just using it more as a cleanish boost : ) , in top boost channel of the vox does get a little bright lol with gain up
I mean yea of course the jhs mod is better because it’s gonna give you more versititly but I don’t think it’s worth the extra money for what it does idk and I love jhs
Nice playing :o
Does anyone know the price difference?
About double
What are those pick-ups? thanks.
Nah... keeping the SF stock it’s the smarter way to go ...
What kind of pickups are those?
Zexcoil
For a pedal comparison o review please use two fuckn guitars, a single coil and a Humbucker please
What guitar and amp are you using?
Jesus christ dude could you play some chords? Its an transparent OD, the point is clarity in between each note and especially with the treble eq, higher freq chords would be a highlight of the pedal.
The JHS pedal sounds WAY better to me.
hello, can you tell your pickups brand?
Sze Kwan I'd love to. These are Zexcoil pickups. This is a Zexcoil Signature Set: txba.ly/v4ve
thank you!
More knobs more switches more money for just a little more base on maximum distortion. Nope!
The standard pedal sounds better to me.
Jhs!
to much treble ... pedal demo's - (Especially) Klon inspired pedals need to be done with an iconic sounding instrument. Those pickups may be cool to some, but most people looking into low gain, tone inspired pedals are not into funky sounding pickups, especially on a strat.
Original
JHS Sounded muddy to me.
Turn down the treble. Problem solved.
Agree. Why Would anyone run the treble so high Unlessyou want to make it sound like crap lol
The original is a better sound vibe. If aint broke don’t fix it.
Don't know... the original seems better! So dark and gloomy the JHS...
JIMI HENDRE xS COULD PUT MOST GUITSR PLAYERS TO SHAME THROUGH A RAW AMP. HE DIDNT NEEDE A PEDAL!!!!!!!
Bruzz Boe I'm sure he also didn't need to type in all caps either.
yea Texas blue I guess he wouldn't, im a guitar player myself I was just saying he was really good for his time... I didn't mean no disrespect toward any certain guitar player. I guess im sick of spending my money on pedals that won't do what they are advertised to do.
checked out your page, loved what I seen you have some nice advertisement, thanks...
Wasnt Jimi the guy who got people started on using pedals? He was like the first pedal addict. Fuzz Face, Wah, Octavio, Uni-Vibe etc..
Chris Mann hendrix + fuzz face = legendary
Stock better1
JHS should mod his own crappy sound pedals rather than making other well-made pedals sound shit by modding them and ripping people off.
Gain from 0-75%, JHS. Gain above 75%, EHX.
joshie4330 Interesting take.
Shame..
they both sound cheap
