Hi Gerald, thanks for your time and effort in making this detailed video. Please let us know which wattage and brand of charging brick and cable would be best for charging the camera via the usb c port.
I realize crop is a naughty word these days but I would like to see some tests using the crop mode. The benefit of the crop mode is it overheats a lot less, the 4k 60 is oversampled from 5.1k vs line skipped and it likely has a much better rolling shutter since its using a smaller portion of the sensor. Since the R5 has 8k resolution its one of the few fullframe cameras that can do a APSC/s35mm crop and still have over sampling. The R5 ironically is actually a really good s35mm camera. APSC crop is 1.6x vs the typical 1.5x crop of s35mm but a 1.6 crop just happens to be the same as Academy 35mm film. It also has the added benefit of longer reach for those that need that sort of thing. I know some have made really good use of the crop mode on the first R5 to get around overheating and a way to get extra reach. Some have even added 0.71x focal reducers to recover some of that FOV. I always felt it was a good option for those shooting wildlife, wedding or live performance type videos. I sometimes use 5.1k raw from the first R5 to my Ninja V.
Top three features I would love to see in Mark III 1. Ability to lock IBIS just like the other manufacturer offers 2. White Balance workflow 3. Level when recording video
Hey Gerald, a big thank you for all the work you put into these. They are a super helpful resource for so many people. I was wondering if you’ve ever done dynamic range testing after extended recording as the camera heating up may have an impact on dynamic range? I believe this is something that engineers of cinema cameras focus on. Thanks
To add to that, Canon applies NR on raws while Nikon does not. Then you remember that Z8 can be found for 3500 with a lil bit of patience. Meanwhile on the Z9 size, you get almost true unlimited recording and that wonderful big big battery.
@@bailey.nt86 Nikon is way behind on AF, my R3 smokes any Z and the A1. Only the A9III can compete because it uses 100% of the sensor, like Canon. AND Canon has improved AF with this and the R1. Nikon and other Sonys use 70% of the sensor for AF points. I had the A1 for a day and the A7IV for two months and they can't compete with AF.
@LukeChristo My Nikon makes me money and pays my bills 😌 that's all I need it to do 🫡 as too have all the Nikon DSLRs I still own and shoot and make money with. Glad you like your Canon.
Great review! Ive been hearing people complain a lot about the dynamic range on this camera taking a bit hit because of the stacked sensor but it looks really good to me from your tests! I guess CLOG2 really makes up for it.
I mostly do still photography. I’ve been slowly reading the manual and there are quite a few features that Canon has added. Things I’ve wanted for some time. One is a “Priority” for the card slots. I can remove the CF card and close the door. The camera switches to card 2 but I don’t care. I move the files from the CF card to my computer and then put the CF card back in. The camera now switches back to the CF card. YEA!!! Before, I had to either not close the door while I downloaded the images or set the card back to the CF card manually. It has a lot of versatility in the auto focus. The area of the AF can be adjusted and changed in many different ways. Like all Canon cameras, it has the C1-C3 *modes* which is confusing to me. Now they have added the ability to save the AF settings and give these sets of settings names. This is a huge win I think. I’ve not really exploited it yet but I think that is most of what I’ve been wanting from the C1-C3 modes. The way the C1-C3 modes work just doesn’t fit my brain.
Similar to how Gerald once reviewed an Arri Signature Prime 35mm to set a benchmark for what you can and can not complain about in a lens - I think Gerald should review the Alexa 35 as a benchmark. Then we would also see how the most dynamic range ever fits into his testing methodology and set-up, and could "calibrate" our own thoughts when he tests other cameras.
Awesome video appreciate the time you put into making these videos. Really interesting findings. I'm super happy with the Clog2 so far. Regarding the buttons and joystick I find the buttons to be perfectly placed and a manageable size. Most of the world doesn't have massive hands so it might just be a you thing. They joystick on my R52 has no issues wobbling when pressed straight down. But who knows over time it may get become looser. I am happy to see that the joystick feels a lot more robust now. There were issues with joysticks snapping off on the R5. Thanks for another awesome video.
With the lack of color shift, uncropped 4K 120 high dynamic range slowmo and good autofocus... this would be a superb sports camera. Slap on a 24-105 2.8 and you're cooking for some basketball or volleyball.
Dont think its fair to go back on a older body. We hold companies accountable for releasing half made cams to fix after production. Maybe a short or different style vid to just go over changes but not a re-review.
Thanks so much for this.. I was particularly worried about the over heating.. but it sounds like if I'm happy with some of the more stock modes then it's not such an issue. Sounds like a great camera.. now need to wait for when we can actually get it again!
@10:58 I cannot see any difference between 24p and 120p which lead me to believe that the difference is due to clock frequency boost that causes rapid increase of heat built-up leading to excessive overheating in a mode that would not be used for long takes anyways.
@@ThatNorma Nikon will have to crunch some extra pixels and we'll all wait until the z8 gets a better EVF, 30fps RAW and pre-capture. I guess no 2nd CF Express B slot in the R5II is made as a bit of a trade off to have that 1/3 less weight than z8, but other than the lack of that slot, canon has it packed into a very lightweight camera.
Honestly, most of the criticisms I've seen for this camera seem ridiculous. Glad you gave an honest review and recognized how amazing it is. Most of the things its "lacking" are stuff that the people that complain about them wont ever use those things anyway.
@@TigaWould I agree it has become politically correct to hate on Canon even when they do many things right but I must choose to disagree with you on the 3rd party lens issue. It's not an issue you say if one chooses to adapt lenses, that's just wrong, firstly because Canon has discontinued manufacturing most of these old EF lenses and it's hard finding a good copy of some of these lenses on the used market, secondly because old EF lenses from Sigma and Tamron cannot sufficiently keep up with the AF of the new mirrorless models, thirdly because RF lenses are very good but not very cost effective which is not an issue for professionals but a huge issue for amateur and beginner photographers and finally newer 3rd party lenses will allow Canon users access to better handling and ergonomics, this seems to be a minor issue in case of small lenses but for wildlife shooters like myself who are in the habit of using larger lenses using an adapter makes the system too front heavy to have better ergonomic control. Canon is going in the right direction with their cameras but the exclusion of third party lenses from the mount is a glaring omission that must be addressed and I am tired of people dismissing this as a non-issue.
@@TigaWould people criticize Canon because they are objectively behind. People criticize Canon because the R1 release doesn't make sense. People don't complain just because they want to. There is usually a reason. It's important to hold them accountable so they're not screwing over customers. In the camera space too there's a lot of people that can't be objective and want to validate their camera purchases/lenses which is weird to me. I own a r3, r5, r5c, rf 100-300 2.8 and rf 24-105 2.8 along with an el-1 flash. I'm well past 99% of canon shooters in regards of being able to speak on the top end gear and having shot with a1's, z9's and their respective high end lenses. I even got to try out my friend's a1 and 300 2.8 and 400 2.8 setup. So no, Canon is behind. It isn't just blind criticism. The R3 was a lacking camera. Is it good? Yes. Is it behind the competition? Also yes. It's like you said there's not a bad camera manufacturer out there, but Canon does typically charge a premium for their glass that is still behind the competition. Sony's 50 1.2 focuses faster, is sharper, and is $300 cheaper for example. If you really read on what professionals are saying that you're claiming you'd also see that most of them are saying that they're also NOT getting the R1 because it's not any different from the R3. It's 10 more fps and a full sized hdmi port with dual cfex b cards and a marginal sensor readout speed increase. That's... literally it. We're already shooting 30fps. Most working professionals don't even shoot the highest fps on their camera and claim 30 was already overkill. People shooting the A9iii don't even majority use 120fps mode on that camera. People didn't on the Z9 either. Unless you need more video features there's no reason to get the R1 over the R3 when the R3 is selling for half as much. People wanted the R1 to be 45mp+ because that is the new norm for flagships. That is the new standard. Sony changed that standard and it's really strange to me to see Canon shooters defend Canon for being behind and letting Canon convince you that the reason the resolution is low is because "the 1 line has always been lower resolution and more focused on speed." ... but you can have both now so why choose? Why limit your creativity? The R5ii literally proves this. If they just stuck these specs in a pro body people would've been happy. That's the other problem though Canon even said the R3 is it's own line and will continue, and that was supposed to be the camera focused on speed... but then they released the R1. So what does the R3 even do now? Do you see the problem? Sony's A7R5 is 61 megapixels and that's how it differentiates itself from the A1 at 50. The R5ii should've been higher resolution. Am I going to complain about getting these specs in a cheaper body? Of course not. Their marketing doesn't make any sense though and the product line has no direction. That's why people criticize Canon because they don't have a direction for their product line anymore that makes sense and their marketing team is what keeps getting them in trouble with the public. See R5 overheating for example.
I'm so glad you reviewed a final camera bought from a shop. I get fed up of reviews that say it's non-final firmare or something so we cant ispect the photos or some feature or another doesnt work yet and these reviews stay up for years. Why bother review the camera then!
Thank you so much for all your hard work, bookmarking (and liked/subbed) for future reference on my new R5ii. Few Qs: 1) for best PQ (but avoiding RAW to keep file sizes down a bit) at 4K Fine do you recommend HEVC or AVC codec? I keep reading HEVC is the newer and more efficient format, but on the camera it locks you to using LGOP whereas with the AVC you can choose Intraframe compression methods. 2) In your DR tests were you using AVC with standard or high Intraframe, or another compression method? 3) when your DR tests says something was shot in 24FPS, in some of the codec/compression combos, 24FPS is locked out and 23.96 is the only option, does your DR result apply to 23.96FPS or only to the modes that are at 24.00FPS? Thanks again!

Top three features I would love to see in Mark III
1. Ability to lock IBIS just like the other manufacturer offers
2. White Balance workflow
Thanks
Was waiting for this! Can't wait to see your C400 review! Amazing video as always!
Raw video dynamic range is over a full stop more at 0.5 (medium) than the Z8/9 and Z6III, impressive.
Nikons lenses are/always have been superior to canon. I'll trade the 1/2 stop of DR for the quality and flexibility of the F/Z and 3rd party lenses.
Great video, so much effort deserves all the likes possible!
Thank you for the clear and rational presentation as opposed to the various fake-drama attempts on YT (with many annoying extreme position comments).
Holly Mole.... Gerald, youre always good, but in this one, man, you reached perfection. Thanks man!
U sold me on it! I’m so stoked to get it!
Hope you can review the C80 or C400 soon! I trust you most for dynamic range tests and would love to see your take that new sensor
This man is the GOAT for camera reviews.
Thank you for a very informative review!
Thanks, so much dedication in this test. Really helpful if we want to buy this camera. Great job!
what a beast.. still waiting for some R8 content btw, especially comparisons in your style with its competitors
A truly impressive monologue. I bought one today!
Finally I was waiting for your review u r the only one I truly trust
We really appreciate the work you put into these!!!! Thank you Gerald!
That's it! Gerald is to cameras what Dan Worrall is to audio on UA-cam. That is: THE GOAT
Reading this title make me so so happy. Commenting before even watching it with R5 mark ii already in my kitty. Its done
Fantastic review! Thanks! 😊
Finally! The moment we have been waiting for!
I thoroughly enjoyed the ending
What a time to be a videographer. Amazing.
oh yea! people today have and as far back as 2020 have so much to work with and use compare to what I have to use back in 2016.
Excellent and thorough review =)! 👍👍👍
Always appreciate all the in-depth reviews and the thorough testing with codecs, modes, and dynamic range! 💚🫶🏽🎥📷
With the lack of color shift, uncropped 4K 120 high dynamic range slowmo and good autofocus... this would be a superb sports camera. Slap on a 24-105 2.8 and you're cooking for some basketball or volleyball.
Super nice review, thanks Gerald!
Thank you!! Been waiting for this!!
Very well done video ! Bravo 👏
A truly impressive well rounded camera.
The review I was waiting for while waiting for my preorder) Thanks Gerald!
The first true hybrid camera from Canon that doesn't have various "cripplehammers" built in. Incredible.
The new battery gives 50% more battery runtime to the R5C. Would love to see a re-review of that camera, it's much better now.
Dont think its fair to go back on a older body. We hold companies accountable for releasing half made cams to fix after production. Maybe a short or different style vid to just go over changes but not a re-review.
Insanely good review. Can't wait to get my hands on this camera to replace my aging R5.
Thanks so much for this.. I was particularly worried about the over heating.. but it sounds like if I'm happy with some of the more stock modes then it's not such an issue. Sounds like a great camera.. now need to wait for when we can actually get it again!
Grateful for what you do Gerald ,Thank you !
@10:58 I cannot see any difference between 24p and 120p which lead me to believe that the difference is due to clock frequency boost that causes rapid increase of heat built-up leading to excessive overheating in a mode that would not be used for long takes anyways.
Because of you I love Camera Canada - and I live in the US lol. I would have zero hesitation shopping at CC if I were up north.
8K 60 raw in-camera without any bs. Holyyy 💩
The BS is that you can’t do redundant recording for the higher codecs.
which you could already do on the Z8 with more flexibility and other codecs. but its great that canon got there as well
@@ThatNorma Nikon will have to crunch some extra pixels and we'll all wait until the z8 gets a better EVF, 30fps RAW and pre-capture.
I appreciate the battery grip of my Lumix S1 even more now 😂 Sometimes I run interview sessions of 8 hours....
Great video as always!
I'm so glad you reviewed a final camera bought from a shop. I get fed up of reviews that say it's non-final firmare or something so we cant ispect the photos or some feature or another doesnt work yet and these reviews stay up for years. Why bother review the camera then!
Breathtaking review, Gerald! Can this camera compete with the Canon C400 on picture-level?
What an amazing review! Informative and entertaining, well done! Thank you!
"I'm Gerald Undone, and this is one of the reviews of all time"
@geraldundone: I've been waiting on this review Gerald! You are the best detailed Camera Tech reviewer on the planet!
Thanks again!
this one appearantly got the best autofocus !! I have the MK 1 but I won't switch yet maybe in few years from now because the R5 MK1 is a really good one
I see the R5II as the merge of R3 and R5. Best features of both into one
Gerald.. its all about the colors. RAW, Film, Arri, RED, Panavision. Nothing has to do with "quality" but pushing colors 😊
