More like other way around ^^ -> The body coating on the R5 is very "sandpaper alike" (maybe therefor its also rubbing off more easily). I always asked myself why they do not use the old style coatings or some kind of structured coating. One of the points I didn´t like about the R5 as I had it. ^^

Someone who can tell you whether or not a feature or spec actually makes a difference, not because they're curmudgeonly or stingy with their money, but because they use cameras as tools and know how to prioritize function, predictability, and reliability over everything else.

In reality, you can do the same things differently and achieve better results. I struggle with this daily as a mid-50's guy with a 5 year old. So, I get it (or at least I think I do). I'm not really impressed with the R5 M2. I have an R6 Mark 2 and I have another 10fps in electronic shutter mode for some reason. C-Log 2 doesn't seem to be a good enough reason to upgrade.
I'm not sure what was meant when the guy said that DNR is "baked in" to the RAW files. So, even if you shut the in camera DNR off, you still get DNR no matter what?
Also, for the battery grip that has the fan, does the grip deplete the batter power faster? That would have been a great thing to mention.
There are some nice things about the camera that weren't mentioned such as a full HDMI out port. Having a mini HDMI port on my R6 M2, a full size would be very welcomed.
Anyway, this was an ok review video but I'm really sick of review videos that test the camera with 3 of the most boring styles of photography, wedding/wildlife/landscape. Something that tests the camera but also goes outside of the box would be nice.

There are a lot of small improvements, like better focusing, faster FPS, a much brighter viewfinder display, etc. I don't know why people expect a major upgrade to an already very capable camera. And the company's resources are limited when compared to those of Sony. If all the main cameras and lenses were interchangeable, people could mix and match gear that best works for them. Instead, people need to marry, and possibly divorce, a camera + lenses maker.

Biggest downside (for video) is the missing oversampled 4K60.
Weird that you can record 8K60 in RAW - But not 4K60 oversampled in a smaller form factor.
(Only way would be to record 8K60 at 2600Mbits and downsample the huge files it in post to 4K60.)
Lets hope for a firmware update to fix / add that ...

Yeah that is a strange omission when you consider how cheap used R5s are selling for compared to this one.

    • @AustrianGeek
      @AustrianGeek 3 місяці тому +2

@@mdhazeldine Yeah. The price differences are huge. Also the R6 Mk-II is a strong alternative (and it offers oversampled 4K60). Quite weird. I guess they skipped on it due to the limited recording time (8K60 C-RAW only reached 23 minutes according to Jordans tests - So it would have meant similar or even shorter REC times for oversampled 4K60 due to the higher processing power needed to oversample + save in a way more compressed form factor). Still - Weird to see. Even the R8 offers it ...

R5c already has oversampled 4K60p. The R52 would be the perfect camera for me with 4k60p „fine“ 😞

    • @AustrianGeek
      @AustrianGeek 3 місяці тому

@@p_adam19 Possibly yeah (coming again with a fan for more constant performance temperature wise). Though: At what price point (reg. the R5C II - The R5 II is already really expensive). Plus: You can get already oversampled 4K60 on the R6 II and the R8 for example. Its ust a weird decision (holding off a ton of video centric shooters). Even if 4K60 "Fine" would be heavily temperature limited - At least to have the option to switch to it is just a must have in 2024. You could still choose "Fine" or "Normal" depending on your rec time requirements ...

Just bought one for £4,005 on Panamoz, with Battery grip, extra Canon battery, CFExpress-B card 128gb, and a control ring adapter! Not sure when it'll be here but it may take nearly 2 weeks.
I was stuck between the R5 Mark II and the R1. Don't get me wrong, the R1 seems to be a great camera, where its 24mp sensors has its strength especially in low light. However, I do wildlife photography and landscapes are something I also want to do, and having smaller 'pixels' on sensor apparently helps with dynamic range at the lower ISOs. It also cost a bit less. The R5 Mark II has slightly more appealing video capability too, which makes sense due to its higher MP sensor.

Mike is awesome. I don't want him near my camera but it'd be great if he was on the show more often.

This camera is obviously better in most ways than the R5, but the dodgy hot shoe cover and the omission of oversampled 4k60 are odd fails. When you consider that used R5s are selling for practically half the price of this camera and still beat it in some respects, it's not the most compelling upgrade, at least until used ones come on the market in a year or three.

Unfortunately, I don't have access to this camera, but somebody posted a video showing that if you squeeze the sides of the cover and press the button, the cover comes off. I've also seen comments about R6 that it was only difficult to remove the cover a few times in the beginning.

It may be that the image processor overheated quickly in the 8k/60 mode or it could not handle it and a new generation is needed. Or maybe an updated C version is coming with this video mode. Unfortunately, companies are very "non-transparent" about their decisions.

I'm taking my R5 II for its first shoot tomorrow. That hot shoe cover really is a PITA. It requires two hands: one fingertip to depress the button and the other full hand to push it off. And that's with no lens attached. Sheesh. I won't be using that hot shoe too often, I don't think.

Great (and funny) video. I am loving my R5 and the lenses I bought for it. Its an amaing piece of technology. Thank you for the review on the R5 II. Keep up the great work and the comedy you inject into your reviews.

I've been so used to using the fuji xt5, I need some practice to hold the r5mii + 70-200 steady! The autofocus is so good it's worth it but so hefty lol. For the eye control I was able to calibrate by holding the camera a little bit away from my eye rather than mashing my eye into the finder.

Nice to see you using the Canon RF 800 mm F11 lens on the new Canon R5 Mark II.
Just had this lens out yesterday on my R6 Mark II for some wild fowl photography.
Also you used the RF 24-105 mm F4 lens - which is an affordable lens.
Don't feel too cheap using these RF lenses compared with some of those very expensive RF lenses.

Here’s to hoping firmware updates change the complicated video custom white balance, and not being able to access false color when using the gamma assist when filming in log. 2 main gripes so far. The rest of the camera is stellar

Great review! I'd love to see something more comprehensive, but I like this format. Maybe do this again with a sports photographer, portrait photographer, street...
I'm considering my 1st mirrorless cam, and the R5 ii will likely be it. My only hang up is the limited display/monitor. Making it free tilting seems like low hanging fruit. So I'm somewhat considering waiting to see what Sony does in the next few months. A Sony A7R vi with a stacked sensor and improved video capabilities would be a strong consideration.

I'm left-eyed and the Eye Control on my R3 is a game changer, but you have to calibrate. I see Mike is left-eyed as well and needed to be a bit more patient. Don't piss on Eye Control, it rocks.

I have the camera now and getting the hotshoe cover off is no exaggeration! I predict that the plastic pin that is holding it will break off pretty soon if you take it on and off a lot. BTW, on a different note, when the video switched to Jordan the graded C-log2 footage looked great! 👍🏻

they have a 4K60 SRAW mode. it's sharper than the regular 4K60 mode but not as sharp as the 4K30 mode.

For video, it is not up to the mark compared to the Nikon Z8 -- especially for longer 8K 60p video recording. But for flip screen and lower weight, the Canon R5 Mark II can also be used as a Vlog camera. The Nikon Z8 is unable to do that.

removing the hot shoe cover was nearly impossible but once removed ,it seems a lot easier , where the two ridges are ,i place both thumbs on the canon logo and rounded edge and press the hot shoe down and slide ,seems the easiest way for me. i don't bother with the little black push button
