Since a few people have asked: The back and forth tests after the autofocus section are not to be evaluated for image quality. That's only a monitoring/info display recording, not a 4K clean feed. It's the only way to show what the eye tracking is doing. And the colors are just a Rec.709 monitoring LUT, not a final grade. I only included it to evaluate autofocus performance, not compare image quality to my main angle. Hope that helps! 🤓👍

@@BoReynolds for shooting what exactly? Overall you can't go wrong with either but I'd say Sony has way more good lenses available so keep that in mind, unless you only need 1 or 2 lenses.

I just assumed that I am doing something completely wrong. Can you show us how to go from what your R6 just gave us over to something more similar to your Sony A cam? Is it even possible?
Great video. RE dynamic range: it's become clear that Canon hasn't moved beyond using a 12 bit A/D conversion in video mode. Canon Log 3 can encode roughly 14 stops if you have it to encode. There's actually nothing wrong with 12 bits as long as you know what that entails, but does sacrifice a fair amount of exposure flexibility when shooting in uncontrolled lighting situations. Other than the other standard Canon annoyances, as both an R6 and R6II owner, I can happily confirm that the mark II variant is a very good camera for both stills and video for existing Canon shooters. I wouldn't be switching platforms over it, but if you're already a Canon shooter looking to get into RF mount from EF, this camera is a great entry.
Almost everyday since the production models are out for this R6 ii, I am searching for a video review and finally when Gerald's done it, I know I'm in for a treat

Note that the heat tolerance setting from the R3 was brought to the R5 in a later firmware update (along with a lot of other improvements on the heat tolerance front). The R5 similarly does 12-bit 5K crop RAW or 10-bit 8K FF. The reason as I recall is that the Ninja V+ can't handle enough bandwidth on HDMI to get 12-bit ProRes RAW over 5K. That's what I had heard, anyway. Also, on third-party stuff, I use a lot of Sigma EF lenses on my R5 and they're great. There's good reason to believe, I think, that we'll see Sigma make RF lenses in due course. The Metabones EF-RF speed booster is also great for the crop cameras and crop modes, in third party accessories on RF (though that's not a lens in the *usual* sense, it *is* technically a lens).
This comment is a little muddled up. The R5 does 12bit RAW in 8K internally, but externally when using the Ninja V+, the 8K is 10bit prores RAW. The R5 cannot do 5K RAW internally, it’s only externally but it is 12bit, unlike the external 8K, and up to 60p.
I must not lie, you footage always looks great BUT when you put the r6ii cottage up I extra super duper liked it! Fellow Sony former canon shooter here due to lens choice although I did get an r6ii on release because I miss canons haha . Granted the tool is only part of it , but there’s something about the canon shooting e per and actually really good rear screens .
Another point worth noting: usually full-frame cameras feature not just more background blur, but also have an advantage in image quality, but since the dynamic range in the R6 ii is artificially limited, the R7 can have exactly the same dynamic range, while costing $1,000 less.
@@duck.cr3 I can't speak to the exact accuracy of this when it comes to the R6 and R7, but in general your statement is right...for photos. In video it's much more complicated than that; for example the A7iv maintains great low light ISO performance than the R7 by more than a stop.
@@duck.cr3 1 stop is the difference between an f/4 zoom and an f/2.8 zoom, which also tend to have roughly $1000 in the difference. Correct me if im wrong, if you do videos predominantly and if you got the original R6 with an Atomos Ninja, there's very little reason to upgrade, unless you want a smaller footprint? The Ninja removes the record limit and overheating is greatly improved, as well as giving you the false colours, all the things which seems to be the selling points for the mark ii. Sure you get 6k raw over hdmi, but then you'll need an external recorder anyway, which is not what im comparing, R6+Atomos vs R6ii
Five main reasons: 1. Better crop mode, 2. Focus breathing compensation, 3. USB-C streaming, 4. Removes overheating issues for internal recording, and 5. The mode dial settings can all be used for video now. Video quality in lab testing won't improve, but usability is much improved.

"Liked" & "Subscribed" I don't like your videos ... I LOVE them!!! Thanks for the tech info on my new R6 ii. It's a great camera for us normal videographer hahaa.
I have the R6 mark ii, and I can’t for the life of me get the 6K RAW recording to an Atamos Ninja V+ to work. All the 4K options work awesome, both internal and external. The ProRes HQ recording at 4K CLOG3 60fps works seamlessly with Final Cut. As soon as RAW is enabled though with any HDMI cable attached (any of 5 cables I’ve tried), the screen lights up and the HDMI goes dark. That’s a bug as far as I can tell. If you’re buying this for the advertised 6K ProResRAW recording, you’re going to need to wait for a Canon software upgrade.
A mostly excellent camera nobody should really get :D But leaving behind my general Canon disapointment, this camera is nice. It could rock the market. In, maybe, 2016. But now many leave this machine behind. It's Jack of all trades and master of none. Typical Canon style
While Canon makes great cameras, totally agree that the biggest put off is their lens lineup, its either cheap, loud, sluggish and ancient STM f1.8 or extremely expensive, big and bulky f1.2
I agree 100%. Their 1.8 lenses are trash. Their RF L prime lenses are great but are too big and heavy for casual shooting. This is where Sony is killing it with the lens options.
I guess they don’t want to cannibalize their like of cine cameras? I can’t imagine any other reason to artificially cripple a midrange mirrorless body in its video performance
Their argument in few podcasts where their technical experts talked is that those sensors can’t provide full dynamic range that clog 2 has which is reasonable. But still if it would be better than clog 3 for a half a stop I would prefer to have it.
@@TomislavMoze yes, I agree with you, I was going to make the same point. This sensor alongwith R6mi also isn't build for all-i video. Canon clearly prioritises video features in their budget cameras as secondary.
@@kapilesh14 I think all-i is possible for sure but not in all of the frame rate options due to the SD card limitations. Also regarding log I think it is mostly limitation of the processing power not the sensor since raw photos can provide much more dynamic range. I guess digic c lacks prodding power to transcode 14-16 bit image to a 10 bit image with all the information.
@@TomislavMoze I might agree with the all I processing argument. But I am not sure about the log. I am not a technical guy by any means but I think that their must be some design differences between fast photo capable sensors and high dynamic range video sensors. You can find many cinema cameras which cannot take a lot of photos, you find budget Sony in between who don't provide higher photo burst rates but provide s log 3 and then you have budget Canon (i.e. R6mii) which has fantastic burst rates but might struggle in the dynamic range (not a bsi sensor as well). I don't completely disagree with your processor argument for log though as cine cameras have big bodies and big fans. I am obviously just guessing. Canons own C70 is one example of the above. While Sony's a7Siii sensor could be found all the way up to fx 6.
The fact that he owns/uses Sony but isnt biased towards that system and can give honest reviews is what I really appreciate. Also own Sony but I do like to keep up with what other manufacturers are doing
@@harryvuemedia5106 those reviews still cover the same topics though, just with way less thoroughness and more guesswork, like "from using the cameras I THINK camera A has slightly more dynamic range"...way less useful than Gerald who actually does tests.
Don't forget that Sony 7 iv is more than ONE YEAR OLD, so it won't have more updates, instead Canon R6 Mii will have more than a couple of firmware during the year.
Honestly... I don't know a single fimmaker/cinematographer who shoots 4K/60p, let alone to do it for more than 5 minutes per clip/scene... 90% of scenes/clips are approx 30seconds to 3 minutes long. Close to nobody will ever shoot longer than that per clip/scene. The only people who would do so are people who buy a camera for a hobby or amateurs, so let's be honest and non-PC here; all these complaints about overheating after an hour of filming and about 30minute restrictions are completely idiotic.
Great video! I think the only thing missing which is worth mentioning is the 'detect-only' AF mode (similar to the 'face-only' AF option from their Cinema line-up). It is one of my favourite features from the C70 especially when shooting interviews, and so far this is the only mirrorless camera that has this option (not even the FX3 has this).
What's the point of Sony supporting third party lenses if the cameras can't even output proper colors? After my a7iii a7riv and a1 i went to canon and is so great. finally perfect colors and less work
Hi Gerald, thanks for reviewing this camera. I notice in the dynamic range test, the Xyla patches appears to be reddish in comparison with test of other cameras. Besides, the imatest noise plot also shows that the red channel has much higher magnitude compared with other channcels. This is also not the case for other cameras where R G B Y have similar magnitude. I wonder why does it show up like this? Is this an experimental error? Does it affect dynamic range test results? Thanks.
hi, i want to buy one, i have Eos R, but this story about DR is getting on my nerves. Is that a big problem, how good the picture is on R6II or that is a deal breaker?
Damn the a-roll is looking hella fine! So satisfying to compare between different videos the changes you've made and how you've made everything even better!
I appreciate both the seriousness and professionalism of this review along with the mild cynicism towards the whole idea of of parsing out the differences between cameras in 2022. In the end it’s entertainment for me. I mostly don’t care about cameras anymore.

According to ChatGPT this is a summary of this video: 1.The Canon R6 Mark II has some annoyances, including histogram and level turning off when recording, a custom white balance tool from 2002, and a micro HDMI port. 2.The camera has a dedicated photo/video toggle and a touch screen. 3.The camera has added focus breathing correction and anti-flicker shooting options. 4.The camera no longer has the high temperature setting seen in the R3. 5.The camera can record for two hours without overheating when shooting in 4K24 or 4K30. 6.When shooting in 4K60, the camera overheated after 42 minutes. 7.Gerald likes the build and ergonomics of the camera, which are standard for Canon. 8.The camera has a new temperature display that shows the camera's current temperature. 9.The camera turns off when the card door is opened, making hot swapping impossible. 10.Gerald finds the menus and touch screen easy to use. (I, a human, cannot attest to the validity of this summary. When i import 1080p hdr pq files in davinci it says those are 10 bit
Gerald, congrats on all your videos.. help a lot always... please.. i have R5C, R6, and R6 MKII, and recording a video using all three cameras with Ninja V in 4K 29.97. Only R6 gets some problem with overheating and also, my ninja V gets texted with a yellow signal and tells me had a drop (and after some drop, stopped to record). I updated the version of firmware in my ninja and will do a test .. at the studio i tried to change the media (SSD) and change the cable but had the same problem... do you had something like this using R6 (std) and some tips to avoid that? thank you so much again for your help wit
Which "Sony" you mean? (i'm newbie)
UPDATE: It is SONY a7iv
Pretty tough decision to make after Panasonic S5 mark II is announced.
Camera Canada sent me a Toblerone bar with my R6ii! They're cute.
I read somewhere that Atomos will enable RAW for r6 MK II recording in January with the firmware update. It's not ready yet.
you need to wait for the athomos to do the update 😅
Is it 10 bit color with prores hq 4k 60fps ? Also is it 4k ipb 60fps in 10bit color ?
@@creativegreats it is 10 bit proress you can chose high and low compression with ninja V. And yeah all c-log 3 frame rates are 10 bit internal
@@TomislavMoze what codec in the r6 mark 2 is only 8 bit ?
does the internal record switch off when u have a monitor?
If you are just using a monitor for monitoring it does not. It does switch if you put it to clean hdmi external recording mode.
A mostly excellent camera nobody should really get :D
But leaving behind my general Canon disapointment, this camera is nice. It could rock the market. In, maybe, 2016. But now many leave this machine behind. It's Jack of all trades and master of none. Typical Canon style
The auto focus / tracking is actually best in class in 2023.
Soooo, A7iv or R6ii?
Or Sony a7rv ?
While Canon makes great cameras, totally agree that the biggest put off is their lens lineup, its either cheap, loud, sluggish and ancient STM f1.8 or extremely expensive, big and bulky f1.2
I agree 100%. Their 1.8 lenses are trash. Their RF L prime lenses are great but are too big and heavy for casual shooting. This is where Sony is killing it with the lens options.
Does this camera have sun breathing?
"... Of what you do in the shadows 🤨"
Don’t understand why Canon just gives the clog3, and DR is so shit for the mirrorless system
12 Stops dynamic range in 2022 for a new Camera? 😹 My old Fujifilm X-T3 has more! 😼
the swivel screen is a NO
The fact that he owns/uses Sony but isnt biased towards that system and can give honest reviews is what I really appreciate. Also own Sony but I do like to keep up with what other manufacturers are doing
The amount of work this man put into making this video...easily hours of editing and filming. Thanks for the content.
Days and days I would say for these 🙏
no other review in the whole internet is even comparable. this guy is the goat at doing his thing.
Gerald Undone's review is more on the technical side. I do like to see reviewer's do more on the image quality and real world use aspect too.
@@harryvuemedia5106 those reviews still cover the same topics though, just with way less thoroughness and more guesswork, like "from using the cameras I THINK camera A has slightly more dynamic range"...way less useful than Gerald who actually does tests.

CVP is also great! They don't post as often as Gerald, but when they do they are VERY thorough in the reviews
that look after "regardless of what you do in the shadows" is priceless lmao 07:08
Less dynamic range than the Iphone 15 log. Canon is getting left behind on mid-level cameras due to accepting such mediocrity.
Don't forget that Sony 7 iv is more than ONE YEAR OLD, so it won't have more updates, instead Canon R6 Mii will have more than a couple of firmware during the year.
Canon need to give us Clog 2. Then we can understand the full potential of the sensor.
Looking for an uncropped 6k60p camera I almost went for this camera... ...until I saw this review. Thanks for saving me from a mistake!
I will sell my a1 and get canon. Sony firmware so bored 😢
Great review. Loved the vortex outro.
First! :D Love your work Geralt!
"It's great, they're both great, everything's great" - I have the same response when anyone asks about any camera nowadays. Great review man.
The temperature gauge is simultaneously super helpful and something that would give me extreme anxiety 😦
What are benefits of detect only Af? What cameras have face only af and detect only af?
Thanks.
I got one too, no time limit for video shooting, not overheating, great camera overall.
hi, i want to buy one, i have Eos R, but this story about DR is getting on my nerves. Is that a big problem, how good the picture is on R6II or that is a deal breaker?
Damn the a-roll is looking hella fine! So satisfying to compare between different videos the changes you've made and how you've made everything even better!
the canon part is only hdmi to Ninja V with informtion on it, it is only 1080 and not clean feed.
Love your smolder at 7:08
Cannon Cripple Hammer (tm) strikes again.
I appreciate both the seriousness and professionalism of this review along with the mild cynicism towards the whole idea of of parsing out the differences between cameras in 2022. In the end it’s entertainment for me. I mostly don’t care about cameras anymore.
thats so cool...but if i need the 120 fps which the sony a7r5 for example not have at al!!!! i have to check out reviews..like from gerald..to not get fuc...d in the end
Who’s debating S5II vs R6!?
But does it have a Cananus?
According to ChatGPT this is a summary of this video:
1.The Canon R6 Mark II has some annoyances, including histogram and level turning off when recording, a custom white balance tool from 2002, and a micro HDMI port.
I'm literally just bored at work & I can't watch this video with volume so I asked chatgpt to give me a summary....so this might be completely wrong lol)
fortunately Gerald posts videos with closed captions
Can you share the link of the bot? I tried same in openai bot and it can't do this
@@somewhatboxes yeah I used the transcript generated by youtube lol
Fantastic as always. The rear screen and EVF on the Canon looks a hell of a lot nicer to me.
