It takes photos too. 😜👍
Lol... Well done nikon
But I only care about video which is fine in my eyes 🤣🤣🤣🤣
biggest complain about nikon is that its automatically crops to aps-c whenever aps-c lens is attached with no option to stay in ff. And all of my lens im using right now for photo work is aps-c lens on fullframe sony, they're almost fully covers ff and have a nice compact size
@@vladimirgrishin8574if left uncropped, it will have very dark areas in all 4 corners
Yeah, as most users of Cameras, I never use any kind of video in a system camera, if I need a short video, I (as most) use my phone ! I will appreciate reviews of cameras spit into still photography review and video review (I do not care about video !!!), so I stopped this video at 1:40
12bit internal RAW is very impressive. great work, nikon
At less than 10ms read speed for 2500 USD is bonkers.
Like the GH7
But I expected R3D
@@stephanes. The GH7 is MFT, this is full-frame.
Impressive but unnecessary
@@frankfeng2701 how's it unnecessary?
It’s nice that Nikon is truly back.
Until today, I would never have given Nikon a thought, but holy hell those video abilities are insane for the price
I think after the Z9, this was expected and everything foward is looking up.
yes, if sony do not give me 4k. my next camera prob will be a different brand
@@waterangel273 almost all camera gives 4k now
@@waterangel273 All sony cameras shoot 4k...like every single one since the a7iii, a7rii, and a6300
As a Nikon user you better be getting z8
You've done something in this video I've not seen ANYONE else do anywhere... and that's use a feature of the product you're reviewing as part of your sponsor "commercial"--in this case the line audio capability of the camera. That's brilliant, and you should market to your sponsors this unique and creative approach. Typically I skip past the sponsorship schpeal and get back to the video, but because you were in demonstration mode of the audio, I was compelled to listen to you talk about the sponsor...just brilliant!
Didn’t think of it but very true!
I'm very impressed with how Nikon has evolved over the years. They are REALLY delivering quality improvements with each new camera body. Only thing I can see missing from the Z6iii is no full sensor open gate mode for anamorphic 1.5x and 1.6x lenses. I hope they'll add this in a future firmware update.
Man, it was very hard keeping quiet about this camera for so long. Glad it’s out and everyone can appreciate how good it is!
Looks like a darn good upgrade for someone with the original Z6. Comparing the specs from the Z6 to the Z6iii...the Z6iii is a HUGE upgrade, especially in terms of video performance and autofocus. Great video Gerald!
Form all the sub 4000 usd camera you mean. No manufactures have something close to this.
If that original Z6 wasn't used for video and there is no big need to improve af performance or fps (and whoever needs this either already has the Z8 or did buy Sony at some point in the past), I'd wait to see whether a Z5ii launched in the mid future. As the Z6iii focuses on speed (and isn't an entry camera pricewise at 2,999€ in Germany), I'd expect two foto-centric bodies next: A Z7iii with a gazillion megapixels and a full frame entry-level camera for the system: The Z5ii with decent af but apart from that entry level specs.
Itnis basically what WE we're waiting for, the Z8 and Z6iii are basically it. Those are what Nikon Users were really waiting for.
"That is bananas " while having bananas ( as a lamp ? ) in the background 🤣
Wasn't lost on me as well 😅
Check out his banana video.
That’s a banana hanger, if I’m not mistaken. You store them like that to prevent bruising.
He is trolling to the guys calling nikon potato or well known as potato guys. Well done😂

The portions of your reviews measuring dynamic range have become by far the most trusted source of that information to me. Your repeatable, scientific approach is unmatched. I’m almost exclusively a stills photographer, but I watch your reviews anyway because I value your to that topic of performance approach so highly.
Great job on the video Gerald! Thanks for making it.
Nikon is finally setting the bar high. Great future for us photographers and filmmakers with all the new technology coming out.
These new videos are so good! A chill Gerald Undone, with the bananus in the background. Dialed!
We need more 4k60 FF cameras without annoying crop or overheating. I love my Lumix S5 a lot (it became very affordable, btw!) and use it for all of my DJ videos in tricky light situations, but yeah, it can only do 4k30 unlimited...
How's the autofocus on that thing? Seems like a pretty good deal atm
Lumix S5 is still phenomenal camera.
@@laksh.mp4 It is... okay. Perfectly fine if you use MF or AF-S. But forget AF-C. Luckily, for DJ or talking video stuff, you can just set it to MF once and record from a tripod. Leaving AF aside, the S5 is really nice. The color rendering is just ridiculous, I guess my Sigma 24-70 also helps here, I just love that lens!

Also thanks for using my intro bumper :D
I’m watching this before Nikon’s premiere presentation! 1:13 to go before it starts! Let’s go!
Love the detailed dynamic range review! Thank you 🌟
Excellent coverage Gerald, as usual. Thanks
Great review as always! Thanks Gerald 👍
Hey Gerald! I love how thorough and insightful your videos are, especially with all the graphs and tests you include. It would be amazing if you could make a video explaining the tests, charts, and theories you use in your reviews and what does it relates in the real world itself. This would be super helpful for new users like myself who want to understand the concepts better. Thanks for all your great content!
I had the first Nikon Z6 and I loved it for the image quality, colors, convenience of use and a few more things. I switched to Sony A7S3 for video purposes, but I still miss the Nikon ☺
I always miss Nikon, but now they fell for flip out screen, so this is no offer for me.
@@kynio3433 well I prefer the new one for video and the old one for photography, so it's hard for me to judge... Or you can put a Panasonic S1H/Sony A7r5 mechanism there :P
@@kynio3433Well considering nearly everyone on earth wants a flip out screen it had to happen.
@@strongereveryday2302 Yes, and that is why Sony invented hybrid solution from A7RV? This solution is actually good, but Nikon decided do go the way others went in previous generation when others decided they were wrong and changing to hybrid now.
Such a shame no-one will ever use it for video.
sub 10ms 6k internal RAW for less than £3k?! Did not see that coming. Nikon is clearly very serious about establishing themselves in this market, and we've not even seen how the RED aquisition is going to affect things yet.
Good job Nikon I love my z8 even above my a7rv
I use a lot of Sonys for video production but really wanted something that could keep up with the z8 for my video use and now I have something. Just might fully dive back into Nikon and buy a couple of these to compliment my z8

Now that is a camera review. 👏🏻
Wow thanks for sharing the great info in the amazing review - I may get this camera!
I came for the Nikon Z6iii review. Stayed for the vortex ending. Great review, Gerald.
Seems Nikon is the only full frame camera maker that isn't clearly kneecapping their lower end bodies to protect the higher end.
This is the way it should be. Newer, lower end cameras SHOULD be better than older high end cameras.
@@oatsgoats39 New tech costs a lot in R&D, they need to make their money back on anything they develop.
They can't use brand new stuff and then sell it in a low end body for cheap. That should just be obvious.
What I'm referencing are examples like Sony LOWERING the framerate on their new cameras to try and push people towards the A9 and A1 if they need any kind of speed, despite the increasing amount of processing power and faster storage solutions. For example: A7R III did 10fps uncompressed RAW, the A7R IV does 7fps. The A7 III did 10fps uncompressed RAW, the A7 IV does 6fps.
Then you have Canon: The R6 II absolutely should have been able to do 4k120 with binning/line skipping/cropping, but then nobody would have a reason to buy the R5 for video other than 8k. And speaking of that; the readout speed of the R6 II sensor would also have allowed it to record full width 6k video (even open gate 6k, actually), but then the R5's resolution advantage would be severely diminished.
Panasonic doesn't limit their stuff as much, but they don't release cameras nearly as often.
Nikon took the bat and gave it to the z6iii
This forces Sony and Canon to match or exceed these specs and that will cause cannibalization of their high end by being forced to match Nikon’s hell for leather approach as they walk expeed 7 tech down the product line.
Z8/z9 are still better cameras. But your point is still valid.
@@michaelblack4803 Sure, better overall, as they should be.
But the fact that the Z6 has ANY features that are significantly better, like the full resolution 120fps JPEGs for 1000 shots, is amazing.
I'm so tired of Sony dragging their feet and kneecapping their cameras so that the only option for anything fast is the A9 or A1.
Nice review. Thanks!
Thanks Gerald! Pre ordering one immediately
This might be the first compelling full frame camera that could tempt me away from my Fuji XH2s. Throw in the retro Nikon ZF as a spiritual Fuji alternative and Nikon is really trying to win me over.
X-H2s still has more DR when shooting less than 60p because of the 14-bit readout. This camera could most likely do the same, but that isn't a feature Nikon seems to be interested in offering.
@@chicaneti Totally. I’m not switching yet, but I’m surprised that the company trying their hardest to make it happen is Nikon. Ha.
@TheJ_G we're one more firmware away from the X-H2s having AF as good as Nikon. I am in the same boat as you, of course, and we can't wait forever. Z6iii is definitely enough better than the Canon R6ii that Canon will have to leave the cripple hammer at home.
Nikon has released a cool new body, but it won't take me away from my X-H2s - I hope Fuj brings back the AF performance - then it will be hard to beat it again. There is also the price... sure it is a new release but it is 3k over here for my taste a bit over the top but so was the X-H2s 🤣anyways great to have all that options 🤙
@teak909 that's where I am at as well. Still might dump all of my unused EF gear and get one, but only because of what they may bring with firmware. 6k60p RAW is so 🔥. Wish Fuji would allow a 12-bit 6k60p readout to BRAW.
Always great video
thank you, Gerald. great video again and again
Such an exquisite camera!!!
This is such an amazing camera, it has become my favorite camera alongisde the R5 now! And being a Nikon shooter, it makes me so happy to see Nikon finally being truly back :')

Hello Gerald! I'm not shooting video often so I'm quite an amateur when it comes to it, but I really enjoy your camera reviews.
I have one question, if you don't mind. Of all the drawbacks that the Nikon Z6III has, and you did mention a couole of them, how many could be fixed with a firmware update? Clearly, hardware limitations aren't fixable, but most of its "faults" you mentioned don't sound like a hardware issue. Or am I wrong?
Loved the video! Best of luck in the future!
I have watched test on CineD lattitude test, and I have learned a lot about how latitude is a much better representation of DR than Imatest Xyla chart. The Burano for example showed a bit average DR, but in the latitude test, it was comparable to the orriginal Arri Alexa at 10 lattitude stops. While most sonys stopped at eight, the Z9 surprisingly 8.5-9 and the likes of RED raptor at 9+. I don't know if it is the same, but that low light is so clean, that it could be a bit the same as the Burano.
I'm not in the market for anything Nikon, but I love watching you review almost anything. Will you be reviewing the Canon C400?
Very nice video Gerald! But if I want a medium budget camera just for stills I should probably go for the ZF no?
Thanks for sharing it. ✌️
hi, would you say the trade off in the dynamic range performance makes it a hard grab? Also, do you think the z6iii is a good option if shooting often in low light condition?
Really glad to see Nikon back with this all new Z6!
The only thing I wish it would ave is the ability to record internally 4 tracks 24 bit digital audio through the hotshoe (like Sony or Panasonic do) or even just 2 tracks but at 24 bit using the classic 3.5 jack input.
Also really hope Nikon is already at work on a better Log curve, working in raw to apply another gamma curve is an unnecessary step and sometimes a deal breaker on faster delivery.
Initially I felt I was taking a risk going with Nikon (Z6) a few year back, but after a year with the Z8 and soon the Z6III as my B-can I couldn't be my confident with having taken the Nikon route. So great to see them out on top again. Great content as always Gerald
I like that it has a Pre-Buffer in photo mode. Its nice to see you can have a 24MP sensor and still get a readout under 10ms without overheating. That makes me look forward to the Sony a7s IV / FX3 MKII
Thanks to your DR analysis, I got a lot of help in purchasing the Fuji XH2S. How poor is the N-RAW of this camera compared to the DR of the Fuji XH2S?
OMG LETS GOOO FINALLY
Impressed
The Z6 III makes the Canon R6 II and Sony A7IV look like outdated cameras. It surpassed those on all technical aspects. High ISO out-of-camera JPEG looks very good on the Z6 III as well.
This is awesome!
Nikon is on fire
Thank you. Even though I’m just a stills shooter as an engineer I enjoy your reviews. Probably not for me but I am interested in any pre-capture features they have added and their approach to improving shutter speeds. Take care.
**Edit** Just found it up to 1 second pre-release in JPG only and up to 3 seconds post-release JPG only (post release is that new?)
So far none of the videos or specs I’ve seen have mentioned pre-capture at all. It’s not a feature I use but it has gained popularity so I imagine it will have at least a JPG pre-capture
a delightfully unexpected result from you- thank you for the insight. Nikon is such a sleeper video solution and I'm glad we have the III to really show that off.
Hi Gerald, I'm curious if the Z6iii is bigger in the hand than the Z6? It looks a little taller, but does the grip feel deeper? The Z6 is on the edge of what I'm able to hold w/small hands.
Nice explanation on the "partially stacked" part with an visual clue. I was so confused like how are they going to make a sensor with partially stacked tansistors.
410 glue method of old 24 million CMOS and D610 D750 image quality is no different Z63 like a fly ~
Non-native stack brings huge cost increase, in fact, it is just flying wire ~ You need to worry about power and overheating caused by glue aging CMOS glass fogging
I'm coming from the Sony camp and I want Nikon to light the world on fire!!! I love competition so when people ask me what brand to use I tell them to rent a body to kick the tires to see what brand will YOU feel comfortable with. I remind them that you're really investing in the glass so choose carefully and I then tell them to get out there and make it happen by producing great images and/or videos!!! My photography circle of friends use Nikon, Canon, Sony, Panasonic and Fuji and all they're all able to produce great work from their tools. Kudos to Nikon and I hope that camera will turn the photography world upside down as did the Canon 5D Mark II when it hit the market or when Sony brought the game changing eye focus and who can forget the Nikon 850 or the Canon 1DX!!! Just my two cents.
Trying to compare these dynamic range results to your review of the z6ii with braw, and Im wondering if you applied any NR in the z6ii tests and whether you used the highlight recovery option in these tests of the z6iii.
For moving shots, use "sports-mode" VR. "Normal" will try to fixate your shot rather firmly and make big jumps when out of bounds. "Sport-mode" should help with that.
This is the Lumix S5ii we all wanted.
The specs are impressive but don't you think it's a step back in terms of DR. The S5II got 12.4 stops. I don't shoot much so don't know if 2 stops less of DR affects the image much. I'd rather have 4K60 uncropped and 12.5+ stops of DR. The S1H II should pull it off. Then again the price difference. I should just shut up!
@@watzmaaname I haven’t thought twice about DR since the GH5. Everything since is overkill and marketing nonsense. Some of the greatest films were shot on 8 stop sensors in HD.
@@watzmaanamewhere did you see 2 stops less of dr? Im h265, the DR is near the same, and in raw the result is low because of noise, but when you will push in post and add nr, the results will be same or better than s5ii
@@peterra2532 not true.
@@watzmaaname This is only because the S5II uses a lot of detail filtering and chroma noise reduction. I own almost every Panasonic G/GH/S cameras and they are doing this since the GH6.
Great review again. How did you manage to follow that stranger for the Ibis test without him noticing you? Do have really quiet shoes?
It’s the only camera in its competition that does 4K 60 without crop… that’s wild and I might consider this over the sony a7iv and Panasonic s5ii
R6ii and even the cheaper R8?
@@frankfeng2701probably he means: the less limited FF 4k60p as of today. On Canon there were some caveats...
@@dariocannone1406 He didn't specify, and define "limited". I'd say R6II has the less limited 4K60p because of the useable Clog3 and dual recording.
Does that limitation in dynamic range also affect stills? Or does it only apply to the video aspects?
I liked ur old z9 time review setup
Thats what the S5IIX should have been. Instead we get x1.5 crop in 4k60.
I'd rather have the s5ii's Dynamic Range over this camera's read out speed
S5M2 uses the same sensor found in A7III, its not capable of 4k60p full readout, Panasonic overclocked it just to get the readout speed faster.
@@KingEgyptious The S5II is full of detail filtering and chroma noise reduction, the ZIII has more or less the same dynamic range when you add some NR on your footage. But the advantage is you can keep fine detail intacts on the ZIII. I prefer to have slightly noisier footage if I get better details rendering.
@@KingEgyptious in SDR mode, shoot flat with "active D-lighting" turn on. Then you'll see some DR. It's as LOG like as you can get without shooting LOG and faster editing. You're welcome.
How's that 4k60 in the Sony A7IV? *coff* also has a 1.5x crop *and over heats
Nikon is smart with the flange distance as well. That might entice some sony use aswell
Aaah, funky end Music with a twirl🎉
Hey @geraldundone Quick question - is the top LCD screen the same size as the Z6ii or Z8?
Amazing Nikon Z6III. Congratulations Nikon.
Glad they finally released this camera, they should have made a 10 bit capable z6 a long time ago...
And I personally hate the flip-out screen , I think it's a feature that is useful mainly for vloggers and less for professional photography..
What should I choose between Lumix S5IIX and Nikon Z6III?
You should try Resolve and the built in Nlog conversion. Didn't know anyone still used Luts.
Hey Gerald, any chance they included shutter angle in this release?
Not that I saw.
@@geraldundoneI figured, thanks!
i just want to know, if i shoot vertical will it be auto rotated in post. None of nikon cameras do that now. I dont shoot vertical all the time and i know i can crop 6k when i shoot horizontal. Just asking for a friend 😅
Is the DR comparable with the Nikon Z6II? The older model review talks about DR in BRAW only if I get it right. Is it almost the same or it got worse?
Thanks for the explanation
A quick question from a stills guy aka video noob. Is there a video explaining why the base ISO is so much higher then for stills? I was wondering. Other than that it seems like this is a great replacenent for my Z6II to try out some video alongside my Z8. Thanks for the thorough review.
Here's a take from ChatGPT 4o (I had the same question, & found the answer very compelling) :
The base ISO for video is often higher than for stills due to several factors related to the way video and still images are captured and processed. Here are the main reasons:
1. **Heat and Noise Management**:
- Video recording involves capturing a continuous stream of frames, which generates more heat compared to capturing single still images. Higher base ISO settings can help manage the sensor's heat and reduce thermal noise, which becomes more prominent during extended recording periods.
2. **Dynamic Range Optimization**:
- In video, manufacturers often optimize the base ISO to maximize dynamic range and minimize noise in a way that's different from still photography. This optimization can lead to a higher base ISO for video to ensure that highlights and shadows are captured effectively over longer recording durations.
3. **Readout Speed and Sensor Efficiency**:
- The sensor readout process for video is different from stills. For video, the sensor may use a different mode that prioritizes speed and efficiency over other aspects like noise performance. This often results in a higher base ISO to ensure stable and reliable performance.
4. **Color Science and Processing**:
- Video processing pipelines might use different algorithms and color science compared to stills. These pipelines are designed to handle continuous data streams and may be optimized for higher ISOs to ensure consistent color reproduction and image quality across different lighting conditions.
5. **Recording Formats and Compression**:
- Video files are often compressed and encoded using codecs that benefit from higher signal levels provided by higher ISO settings. This helps maintain image quality and reduces artifacts that might be introduced during compression.
6. **Industry Standards and Camera Design**:
- Some cameras are designed with specific base ISO settings for different modes based on industry standards and intended use cases. For example, cinema cameras might have higher base ISOs for video to align with the needs of professional filmmakers who work in controlled lighting environments.
### Practical Implications
- **Noise and Low-Light Performance**: Users might notice that video mode on their cameras tends to have more noise at equivalent ISO settings compared to stills. This is because the base ISO is higher, and the sensor is optimized differently.
- **Dynamic Range**: The higher base ISO helps maintain a good balance between shadow detail and highlight retention in video, ensuring a more flexible dynamic range for color grading and post-production.
- **Exposure Adjustments**: When switching between stills and video, photographers and videographers might need to adjust their exposure settings to account for the different base ISOs.
### Conclusion
The higher base ISO in video mode is a result of balancing various technical factors to optimize for continuous recording, heat management, dynamic range, and overall image quality in a different operational context compared to still photography. Understanding these differences helps users make better decisions when switching between shooting modes and ensures they can maximize the performance of their cameras in both still and video applications.
I want to see real life results on DR, as I have a good idea on how the Z6 II dynamic range was, but as we know RAW is more noisey so that was expected
To think the video features in this new body is Nikon base and nothing infuse with RED stuff is impressive. Great review bro!
I've basically sworn off the official Nikon LUT for working with N-log off my Z9. I'm always left with footage that looks completely blown out even when exposed "correctly" via the histogram and false-color on the Ninja. CSTs are the way to go.
I dont know if I compare it right but the DR seems to be even lower than A6700 which is APSC camera? The A6700 at ISO 800 Low = 12.4 / Med = 11.2 / Med-high = 10.1 / High = 8.57
Was looking for your review LOL
Now saving money for Z6iii , D750 user since 2019, so now I want mirrorless that shoot video too, so I think Z6iii is the best choice for me 💯💪
Your world is about changed forever. The OG Z6 was substanially better to operate than the D750. This coming from someone who shot 100 weddings on the D750 from 2015-2018. 2019 got the Z6. Downgraded to the Z5 for SD card slot convenience. Just shot a Z8 as main body this weekend for a wedding, 3D tracking is mindblowingly good. I was barely thinking about focus throughout the day. Hopefully this novel sensor format doesn't develop novel issues over time. Seems like high shutter speed there is novel banding issues that aren't in other fully stacked configurations.
@@ChrisBundy17 probably the most convincing argument for me to finally upgrade my 750. Still unsure on the Z8 or this. I really don't do video but do a lot of timelapse and astro. Shoot maybe 3 wedding a year
@@Gavlister Lets do some GAS math. Rental cost of Z8 with battery and card $240. $3500/3 weddings = $1166. Not good. $3500 / 12 weddings over 4 years = $291. Good to have the body for the rest of the year for $51 per year.
Z6III $2500. Lets say rental is $200 for a weekend. $2500/3 = $833. $250 / 12 = $208. $8 for the rest of the year.
I'd buy the Z8 still looking at it that way. You could even line item it into your cost estimations per wedding.
Nice video
Question please
Nikon z6 ii or canon rp with 24-105 f4 L

Love the bananas in the background
So 1080p up to 240fps - is this 8bit or 10 bit ? Or can we shoot in NRAW too ?
Is it known if the lower resolutions are downsampled from 6k or do they line skip?
I'm just here for the end credits music.
You mus use an analog Preamlifier, with the Zoom you have Audio Video Delay (DSP).
It'd be interesting to see the comparison between this nikon and lumix s5ii/s5iix
Gerald, I’ve noticed that you haven’t mentioned anything about Blackmagic for some time now even though they added several new cameras to the market. Is there any reason for that? If so, can you share that?
Dang. Nice video. Impressive cam - competition for Sony right there.
I have no interest in this camera, but it does set a new price-to-performance level that will shake up the industry. Full frame, fast readout, internal raw, etc... all for $2500. And people thought I was crazy when I said the full frame Blackmagic camera was overpriced at $2500. This camera beats it in almost every regard, and is the same price.
The next gen of Sony mirrorless cameras will have to have better specs, or beat the price. They can't get away with charging $3500 for the next A7S camera, that's for sure. Their specs were unbeatable 4 years ago, but not now.
man i love how autofocus is just a tiny section at the end.
