I remember successfully using my eye to focus with my Canon eos 5 back in the 1990's. It's good to see it implemented again on a new Canon '5'' series camera.. 🙂
The EOS 3 film camera was my first autofocus camera, and I learned to use the eye-controlled focus well, even with glasses. It worked better in some situations than others, so you learned not to use it in some settings. Because it was my first AF camera, and I got used to AF working that way, I have always missed it. I did buy the R5 last year and thought that it would be my last camera (in my late 60's) UNLESS they came out with a version that had eye-controlled focus. Well... let's say I was among the first to pre-order the R5 MK II. And to have increased dynamic range along with it, and improved AF generally. I was more than content with the R5 and large prints from it (on a Canon Pro-2600). I am really looking forward the the MK II.
Seems alright overall. Now they just have to expand their lens line-up or fully open their mount for Sigma and Tamron before I'd consider buying a Canon camera again.

@@cameralabs It shows in every way Gordon. Your breadth, depth, visuals, pacing, but most importantly, your sense of what's important (and what's not) to your viewers.
Though many were unfortunate enough to have to deal with the poorly designed hot shoe on the R5, that big design flaw is rarely mentioned if not searching specifically for it. It’s certainly never mentioned in reviews. I shoot video and take photos and many times I need to use on camera flash. Thankfully I had paid for extra coverage and was able to send my camera in for the quick repair, but others spent hundreds of dollars to get theirs fixed when it shouldn’t have been a problem in ten first place. I hope and assume that the updated hot shoe isn’t screwed into place from the inside of the camera this time! If you’re unaware, many of us dealt with the flash becoming loose in the shoe and not making proper contact. In the middle of an all-day shoot I discovered I had to use one hand to push the flash forward when taking photos so as to have proper contact. Thanks for the great review! I finally subscribed.
@@cameralabs I was also wondering if they addressed the hot shoe issue. I agree with @livemusic that you have to specifically search for this issue on the R5/6 or you don't hear much about it. That makes it hard to tell how wide spread the issue is but, for most it seems like the screws eventually just back out and the mount gets loose. Unfortunately, you have to take the camera apart to tighten them back up.
First timer here. Great job explaining the features in a First Look Review. Looking forward to seeing your in-depth analysis and the overall benefits/features in the real word.
I've heard that most reviewers only had a few hours with the cameras. This is a superb look, thank you, and if that time limit is true, even more impressive. Really appreciate the info.
Thanks! Access during press events can be limited, but I max it out for as much as I can! In this case it was one day with both cameras, but I kept working until late.
I think the price is good for all the added features you get. It is hard to ignore the $2899 price of the original right now. I love my R6 but need more MPs....
Matrix stabilisation? Do you mean digital stabilization? if so, then no, because it would require a crop and there's not enough pixels. But IBIS stabilization still works. Or do you mean gyro data?
@@100amperThat's a big downside of the R5C and also Fuji X-T3 that I used before. Thanks to IBIS I hardly take the tripod with me anymore. My style is run and gun and have small package so R5 II is perfect for that.
@@jan.tichavsky The only thing I like about the R5c is that you can shoot for several hours in 8k 60 frames - no overheating, I mostly shoot welding indoors on a tripod, but sometimes I need to fly around the object and even the electronic stabilizer doesn’t help, it’s bad without matrix stabilization.
It’s so nice to enter Gordon’s sane concise camera channel such a refreshingly good change from the other snake oil what’s up UA-cam channels of today.
I don't always check out videos knowing I may never have the budget to afford them but It's amazing to see the evolution of photography. One can hope the face recognition / prioritization features will eventually trickle down to lower models. The only excuse we'll have of missing a subject is forgetting to hit the shutter button!
The R5 II is the more exciting of the two announced today, and more versatile. The R1 will dominate the press galleries of sports and media events but there isn't much reason to need it outside of those niches.
Well done as always, Gordon! I've sold my trusty and beloved 7D Mk II and Sigma 150-600 Sport, and am putting that money towards the purchase of an R5 Mk II, which I hope will be within the next couple of weeks. Really looking forward to seeing how things go with the 100-500 RF and 200-800 RF.
Thanks, that will be a fantastic combination. I recently retested the R5 II with the 70-200 Z for birds and it did really well. You can see the results in my 70-200 Z review. PS - if you're shopping for them at B&H or anywhere online, please consider going through my links here or at cameralabs.com thanks!
I am curious if you had any difficulty removing the hot shoe cover. On the camera I had, it took quite a bit of work to get the plate off of the camera.
On paper looks like a good progression. I would've said that feature wise, it's a nice evolution. In practice, where I am, Canon wants 23% more money for it than for the R5 - that is a substantial price difference! Also I do not understand the presence of jpeg upscaling instead of pixel shifting of raw images in this model. Hi-res camera is bought for high resolution image sensor with the intention of pixel peeping every pixel shift - not a mobile phone jpeg computation. In R1 this feature had somewhat more validity where everything is about speed of transfer to the press. But here??
I really like what Canon is doing with their mark II cameras and it’s interesting to see what Nikon did Z6 III. I hope it’ll push Sony to make the next a7 and a7S cameras up to par with their competitors
Hi, have you also noticed in your copy a strange fit when the "Canon" inscription on the right and left side is clearer than in the case of Canon R5, R3, R6II?
In R5 (Mark 1), if you are in a zone auto focus mode and start to track a subject, once the subject moves out of the zone, it stops tracking it. Does this still happen in the R5 mark II? I think I saw briefly in the clip that you had a center auto focus zone, it focused on the face of a basketball player and kept tracking him once he moved outside of the center zone (and R5II switched to full frame auto focus). If that is the case, that's a huge improvement!
I think once it starts to track with the shutter half or fully pressed, it'll follow across the whole frame. The zone part only seems to affect what subjects are initially recognised BEFORE you half press. At least that's my experience as I recall.
@@cameralabs My guess is Canon is being obstinate and consumer-hostile as usual. Still waiting for that firmware update to remove the 30 minute record limit on my R6 (M1).. (crickets..)
the body looks pretty close to the original R5- any idea if the cages and battery grips will fit or will all of those need to be swapped out for a new fit?
@@cameralabs very helpful! It would be nice if all we have to purchase is a new cable clamp instead of an entirely new cage. The forehead on the EVF looks flatter, but not much taller.
Hi Gordon, great review/preview as always! Just one question regarding the pre-shooting mode: does it still save the entire burst as a single file, like the R7 does?
very much would love to see a dynamic range comparison in video - between R5mk2, R5, and R5C. This is hugely important for real-world usability and functionality in documentary & video productions
Hi Gordon, I purchase the Canon R5 mk ii and EL-5. I noticed that the “*” Star Button when pressed is triggering the flash. The button is set to the default setting AEL. Have you had any other feedback about this?
That sounds very odd and no I've not heard about it! You'll need to do some troubleshooting. Try assigning the * button to a different function (and maybe back again to AEL after) to see if that stops firing the flash. There's also a firmware update you may want to try. Let us know how you get on.
Owning a 550D, 5D Mark II and a R5C I will not upgrade until Canon will release a Global Shutter camera. But this R5 Mark II is nice indeed. Great video!
Probably a stupid question but does it matter what lens is mounted on the camera in order to use the eye control? I am still using EF lenses with an adapter. Love your reviews by the way!
Thank you!!! Does it have the crop mode for 4K120? It can be very useful for wildlife. Pre-continuous shooting looks like cannot be assigned to a custom button for the user manual.
What should I see. As always Gordon has reviewed all important features and covered them in one video.. Great video as always. This cameras has been released for the Olympic Games.
Excellent Gordon. Thank you. Having had dust on the sensor issues in early versions of the 5 (DSLR) series its something I'm very wary off. I wonder if the cooling option of the R5MKII will bypass any area that may put dust into the sensor area. Perhaps that's something you will look at in your fuller review Gordon?
Some complained the price increased by $400 compared to the R5 original launch price. $400 in four years to me is not too big of a deal. If you spend almost $4k on a camera, the extra $400 is not too much. If you don't commit to one brand, Nikon Z8 is a better deal.
Does the R5 II offer the choice of an audible shutter in the electronic shutter mode like the R3? The silent electronic shutter in the R5 I drives me nuts.
Do you happen to know if this camera has a proximity sensor (for the EVF) that works like the R3, where it isn't constantly coming on every time something brushes past it, like the R5 and R6 does?
Wondering...does it have zebras or blinkies in its photo modes to warn of blow out/overexposure? and does it move the metering point with the focus points?
Hi Gordon, in your review test, could you test at what point does the people registration fail? For example: • sunglasses on vs off between registered and when shooting • how close and clear of a face does the registration need? Does it work well if it’s only a side view? If it’s an wider angle shot? • does registration still work well across days? i.e. If it’s registered once, will it continue to successfully detect the same person over time? Additionally, will it detect well if say the subject changes their makeup or attire/costume? Thank you! 15:15 Also, would like to think this feature came about in part from feedback submitted personally on the R5! Had suggested for there to be an in camera counter check to verify if images captured are indeed in focus as the R5 had an issue where the subject AF box was on the subject but the subject in the actual image was OOF. Very frustrating especially on fast paced shooting days. The feature gives users at least a heads up check to try again to make sure they get the shot before walking away/wrapping. If indeed the feature came from the feedback, it’s good to see Canon listening to direct user feedback and actually doing something about it
Good questions about the person recognition, I'll do more tests for the final review. I believe it will work with different clothes, as it's possible to use a photo from any source.
Could you please help me with the following issue: my Canon R5C camera shuts down during video recording, the LCD screen goes dark, and the viewfinder also goes dark. When I switch the power to "OFF", the camera does not turn off. I have to remove the battery and reinsert it, after which the camera works for a while and then freezes again. This is very frustrating. What should I do in this situation?
Awesome review (pre-production). Re: Batteries -I had an annoying exchange of comments on another thread that somebody posted on Facebook about third-party batteries versus Canon. I have always said that the OEM batteries from Canon outperformed any other brand that I had tried and I had tried 2 other third-party brands. They were failures… I shoot Airshows so with High-speed jets, I could rip off 4000 shots easily. My batteries still showed 25% left. 🤙
First party always work better in my experience. Plus they're often needed to unlock the full performance in speeds or af. I'm sure there's some deliberate restrictions or blocks, but the bottom line is first party batteries often deliver the best performance.
Great video Gordon. I'm still amazed that after all this time Canon still can't quite match Sony (and Nikon) on read out speeds and frame rates. I get that it beats them in a few categories but the A1 which is many years old at this point still has better readouts. I'm not a Nikon expert but I think the Z9 does too. The R1 is close but it only does it with 24mp. I would have considered switching back if I knew the readouts would not affect me. I can shoot plane propellers and hummingbirds now with no rolling shutter electronically. I don't trust this yet. I'll wait for your full review where I hope you can do some good testing of it. By then Sony may have given me pre-capture on my A1? LOL I doubt it.
@@cameralabs would be interesting to know as that's one major gripe I dislike about the pre-shoot function. Having all photos in one file is 'manageable'. But needing to wait and missing action is a pain. Even with fast cards.
It has all these excellent features, but does it have one of the most simple features that has been found on even cheap cameras from other brands for over a decade (that has been missing from most Canon cameras)? That is, can you keep the horizon level on during recording video? It may seem silly, but this one feature will decide whether I purchase one or not. I know it has some self-leveling IBIS thing, but that isn't what I'm asking. I just want to be able to make the camera level myself, because I can see the level on the screen. Any clue if it can do that?
@@cameralabs yeah, the tool to keep an eye on your camera being level. Like for me, often times on a monopod it's easy for me to end up holding it a little to the right or left. Having that level lets me notice that and fix it while recording a wedding ceremony, for example.
@@cameralabs Thanks, One review made it very clear that it didn't, then some other review said that it does. The point for me is while recording, specifically. Other Canons have one until you press record.
Interesting. The sad think about is they still add a low pass filter making the images less sharp naturally & relying on auto artificial sharpening. Video formats match the R5C now.
I really miss having sRAW. It was a nice feature for smaller res raw files on the old bodies. I saw you mention there was an sRAW for video. Is that a chance they added it for photo as well? I know there's cRAW for smaller file sizes but it would be super awesome to have the ability to do cRAW AND sRAW for even smaller file sizes. I love having max resolution for portraits/bridal photos but don't really need huge resolution for party photos.
I agree. It's a shame. I want to have redunancy in Raw not Jpeg. Another review said the SD card took 30 secs to catch up what was done on the CF express card. 30 secs at an event is a lot.
@noPrinting i mean, they really don't "need" to do so. manufacturers could offer CF express cards with more efficient NAND flash that generates less heat rather than faster than required write speeds
It's a way of compressing video by multiple frames to make the file smaller than all-i which compresses each frame separately for better quality and faster editing
Appreciating all the cool details about the camera but also looking forward to learning more about: - Considering the new passive cooling design, how is the weather sealing? - Do we still have a low pass filter on the stacked sensor? - Any EVF lag when shooting 30fps? - Although highly impressive on paper, how accurate is the AF/tracking system when actually taking a picture? 100%? 90%? - What is the actual DR loss with this new stacked sensor? This sure sounds like an exciting camera, personally for me the same as the 5D Mark II back in the day, although on a whole different level considering the tech available today. Thanks for the detailed preview Gordon!
@@cameralabs I'm catching up to the reports now. Cameras are getting to the point where the additions aren't necessarily that advantageous. But that's a good thing.
@@cameralabsif this is the case it will not work for me as my main event camera. Will stuck with my R3. When you shoot 15-20 events per month 45 mp is too much.
I would like a replaceable cartridge s to allow two cards of either kind in any combination. I might be happy with two SD cards and you could have dual CFExpress.
Thanks Gordon, great as always 😊 do you remember if it’s possible to store and rename more then one custom white balance ? I like that feature a lot on my R3 body’s
@@cameralabs Thanks Gordon ! I hope because I use it all the time at my photography and the one with the old R5 ist simply not enough. Canon could have done it so mutch better. Why is the app so bad - you could not transfer white balances and safe it for the next time. The mft app by canon that costs something like 5 € a month is a joke. Better App better connectivity that would be a way to go … canon is great but 😂 really love your videos. All the best DIRK

I think the price is good for all the added features you get. It is hard to ignore the $2899 price of the original right now. I love my R6 but need more MPs....
@@derbagger22 sure thing, an older camera will always look like better value as it'll be discounted. Sub 3k is great for the R5.
Will the EOS R5 MK II have matrix video stabilization at 8k60 frames in RAW ?
Matrix stabilisation? Do you mean digital stabilization? if so, then no, because it would require a crop and there's not enough pixels. But IBIS stabilization still works. Or do you mean gyro data?
@@cameralabs Exactly the ibis. In R5c it was sorely missed when recording in 8k 60 frames Raw. Thanks for the answer.
@@100amperThat's a big downside of the R5C and also Fuji X-T3 that I used before. Thanks to IBIS I hardly take the tripod with me anymore. My style is run and gun and have small package so R5 II is perfect for that.
@@100amper you've got me questioning myself now. I will check for my final review.
Thanks, I sometimes feel I should promote the lack of hype a bit more! Purveyor of calm reviews on UA-cam since 2006!
Always the most concise reviews thank you ☺️ 👍🏻
Thanks!
I don't always check out videos knowing I may never have the budget to afford them but It's amazing to see the evolution of photography. One can hope the face recognition / prioritization features will eventually trickle down to lower models. The only excuse we'll have of missing a subject is forgetting to hit the shutter button!
An excellent and highly informative first looks review as usual Gordon, thanks.
Thanks!
Canon absolutely cooked on this one! 😍😍
I am curious if you had any difficulty removing the hot shoe cover. On the camera I had, it took quite a bit of work to get the plate off of the camera.
I did find it a bit tricky, perhaps due to the new locking mechanism. I only did it a couple of times though, so hopefully it gets easier!
Hey Gordon, great job as always. Will the eye control work with people wearing glasses?
I believe so, but I'd definitely rent or borrow one to try it first
Hi, have you also noticed in your copy a strange fit when the "Canon" inscription on the right and left side is clearer than in the case of Canon R5, R3, R6II?
This was an early sample, so may not be representative
Gordon thanks!
You're welcome!
Any idea what the limitation is that means older cameras can’t use the aperture ring for photos? 🤔
I have no idea, I keep asking them!
@@cameralabskeep up the pressure!! 🤪
Thanks legend!!
@@cameralabs My guess is Canon is being obstinate and consumer-hostile as usual.
Still waiting for that firmware update to remove the 30 minute record limit on my R6 (M1).. (crickets..)
Good review. This is primarily a camera, when will they add 16 bits for the photographer???
So 4K is only up to 30fps oversampled?
its oversampled from 8k, any camera yet cant oversampled from 8k to 4k 120p its alot of data. Oryginal R5 4k 120p its amazing so not a big deal
Correct, the oversampled 4k Fine mode is only up to 30p. I think this is because it comes from 8k which is also only up to 30p in the non-RAW mode.
the body looks pretty close to the original R5- any idea if the cages and battery grips will fit or will all of those need to be swapped out for a new fit?
I'll try to find out, but the battery grips are probably different
@@cameralabs very helpful! It would be nice if all we have to purchase is a new cable clamp instead of an entirely new cage. The forehead on the EVF looks flatter, but not much taller.
Hi Gordon, great review/preview as always!
Just one question regarding the pre-shooting mode: does it still save the entire burst as a single file, like the R7 does?
Thabks, and as noted in the video, the preburst is now separate files!
very much would love to see a dynamic range comparison in video - between R5mk2, R5, and R5C.
The eye control is effectively directing the AF system, so should be independent of lenses
Nice review Gordon
Thanks!
Thank you!!! Does it have the crop mode for 4K120? It can be very useful for wildlife. Pre-continuous shooting looks like cannot be assigned to a custom button for the user manual.
Not sure about all the video options, but will confirm in my final review
Can you record RAW video to both card slots simultaneously (i.e. redundant backup) or just the CFExpress card + external recorder?
I;m pretty sure RAW video is either in Canon's own format on the CFE card, or in proRes externally only. No redundancy.
What should I see. As always Gordon has reviewed all important features and covered them in one video.. Great video as always.
This cameras has been released for the Olympic Games.
Any idea how well the eye-tracking autofocus works for people wearing glasses?
Love your videos...Thanks for all the helpful information!
Good point, I sincerely hope its kept separate!
Is the vertical light meter on the right of the screen at 4:32 a new thing?
Some complained the price increased by $400 compared to the R5 original launch price. $400 in four years to me is not too big of a deal. If you spend almost $4k on a camera, the extra $400 is not too much. If you don't commit to one brand, Nikon Z8 is a better deal.
Does the R5 II offer the choice of an audible shutter in the electronic shutter mode like the R3? The silent electronic shutter in the R5 I drives me nuts.
I think so but need to confirm
I don't like two types of cards... why both cards are not cf express ?
Only in R1m2
Hello Gordon, does the shutter closes when you power off like the Mark I, so that it protect the sensor when you change lenses. Thank you
I think you can choose. But here you can see the shutter closed in the thumbnail when power is off.
Thank you very much
Presumably no built-in GPS 😢. Is there any option for haptic feedback when shooting continuously with the electronic shutter?
Sadly no to both. No-one does haptic feedback yet on these
Thanks Gordon, excellent overview. Do you know if it shares the built in GPS from the R1/R3?
Sadly not
Do you happen to know if this camera has a proximity sensor (for the EVF) that works like the R3, where it isn't constantly coming on every time something brushes past it, like the R5 and R6 does?
It does, but I assume you can turn that to always be off or always on.
Has the 30 minute time limit for video been removed?
Yes
Wondering...does it have zebras or blinkies in its photo modes to warn of blow out/overexposure? and does it move the metering point with the focus points?
Hmmm, not sure for photo, it does for video. And yes to the metering.
Hi Gordon, in your review test, could you test at what point does the people registration fail?
For example:
• sunglasses on vs off between registered and when shooting
• how close and clear of a face does the registration need?
Call canon, it's a technical issue
@@cameralabs Thank you very much for your feedback.
They were failures…
I shoot Airshows so with
High-speed jets, I could rip off 4000 shots easily. My batteries still showed 25% left.
🤙
First party always work better in my experience. Plus they're often needed to unlock the full performance in speeds or af. I'm sure there's some deliberate restrictions or blocks, but the bottom line is first party batteries often deliver the best performance.
will be upgrading from R6 II for resolution, less rolling shutter and the EVF
Not entirely clear perhaps but does the buffer need to empty fully using pre-shoot before you are able to shoot again?
I don't think so, I was hammering it, but using cfe helps clear buffer much faster
Do you mean a level indicator so you can adjust how you hold it?
@@cameralabs yeah, the tool to keep an eye on your camera being level. Like for me, often times on a monopod it's easy for me to end up holding it a little to the right or left. Having that level lets me notice that and fix it while recording a wedding ceremony, for example.
@@pinkflamingos69 I'm pretty sure it has one, but will try to check for my final review. I use them all the time on my other cameras.
Video formats match the R5C now.
so have they announced the charger the LP-E6P battery will use? I've seen the battery and the grips and such but not the charger...
Good question, I'm not sure. Tbh, I mostly charge in camera over USB, but obviously that ties up the body
@@cameralabs nvm... looks like it just uses the same battery charger as the r5/6/r (the lp-e6c charger)
Can you tell me if you can do 4K quality while using the cropped mode, or does it change to HD only.
I'm pretty sure you can film 4k in cropped mode
@@cameralabsfor sure you can. But in 120p?
By the way, the Canon EOS 5 from 1992 was the first camera with eye-controlled autofocus.
I know, I had one. I'm talking about the R3 implementation which is a World apart. I wish there was a way to record and show it.
So is this basically an R3? Like I’m curious where the R3 falls now.
Hi Gordon. Does the R5II have Look File support like the R5c and C70?
Not sure, sorry!
Not having 2 cf-express type b card slots was the cripple hammer.

@@oneeyedphotographer R1 ?
Hi gordon, can you confirm that the bg-r10 battery grip is compatible on the r5 II, i saw that in canon canada spec page ?

Is the dynamic range better than the original?
Can't say until that side is tested.
Some reviewers say its even worse.
Have they taken off the 30 minute recording limit?
I believe so

Great preview Gordon. What is long GOP? Thanks
It's a way of compressing video by multiple frames to make the file smaller than all-i which compresses each frame separately for better quality and faster editing
@@cameralabs thanks Gordon, appreciate the reply.
Actually, Eye Control was first introduced with the EOS 3, which was a film camera but being an SLR the EOS 3 didn't have near as many focus points.
True, and I also had it on the eos 5 film camera too. I meant this substantially more sophisticated version!
EOS 5 in1992. It predated EOS 3 by about 6 years. Also cheaper EOS 50E came out in 1995.
Does clog2 support four 4k60p?
I assume so, but I've been asked several times now, so maybe there's a gotcha. I'll investigate for my final review
Does the flash work in the electronic shutter?
Yes
Good question, yes, it does and I mention it in the video at the hotshoe section. Slow sync speed though.
Appreciating all the cool details about the camera but also looking forward to learning more about:
- Considering the new passive cooling design, how is the weather sealing?
- Do we still have a low pass filter on the stacked sensor?
- Any EVF lag when shooting 30fps?
- Although highly impressive on paper, how accurate is the AF/tracking system when actually taking a picture? 100%? 90%?
- What is the actual DR loss with this new stacked sensor?
This sure sounds like an exciting camera, personally for me the same as the 5D Mark II back in the day, although on a whole different level considering the tech available today. Thanks for the detailed preview Gordon!
The vents are weather sealed.
Does pixel shift give you a ready-made RAW file compatible with Lightroom, like Panasonic?
It doesn't have pixel shift
What model in the Sony series do you feel would match this Mark II?

I would like a replaceable cartridge s to allow two cards of either kind in any combination. I might be happy with two SD cards and you could have dual CFExpress.
