Your videos helped me settle on an R5C about a year back. Still constantly impressed by it, especially now that the new batteries make it more viable un-rigged up!
I returned my launch R5 II. I already have an r5 and r5c. It really didn't add much to what I do except another c log 2 to go with my c70s. I have an R1 on the way. Oversampled 4k up to 60 fos, clog 2 ibis unlimited recording, no overheating, and better lowlight, 2 batteries will last an entire day and the best AF with Canon.
@@mrrexy4151 let's hope so. I have an R3 and C70 already. I'd love to have an a better r3 with clog 2 and some of the conveniences of shooting with the c70 like more codecs and finally the ability to change while balance while filming.
Everyone goes on about specs, but completely ignores the difference an OS/menu makes. If it’s geared to photo, it’ll be better for that. If it’s geared for video it will be better for that use. This is what makes the R5 C such a usable camera - no compromise in the menus (the bit of the camera you use often for every single shoot). Great insight as always, thanks Josh!
Great Video as always Josh... I think you made great points about the IBIS. I am not a big fan of IBIS for video. The wobbling around were you are in focus can be a feature I guess but for most of the time it's just a distraction. I am a bigger fan of stabilizing the entire entire rig than just the sensor. Like motorized gimbal. I don't have the budget for the R5C but I had to choose between the R6ii and the R8 and I ended up choosing the R8 just because it didn't have IBIS. I am missing out on dual card slots and I have to carry a USB-c power bank but you live with what you live with. One thing is for sure I am slowly upgrading my glass and other parts of my gear and probably will end up with an R5C or R5Cii in a few years. I do wish I could shoot open gate and have access to Shutter angle mostly because I would think that Shutter angle would just save time when switching modes and figuring out shutter speed in general for what ever effects you are doing. I do work in dusty environments. Probably why I don't really like fans but I totally understand why you do.
I think it will be a great camera for a while still. 8K raw is overkill for most production needs but it's nice to have the flexibility. Plus it being a Cine camera is great.
I'd love you to review the new R1! I think they're not advertising it much for video because of the C80 and C400 but my bet is it's the best Canon mirrorless camera for video and the best in the market when it comes to low light. Love your videos!
Quick correction: You can shoot in raw on the r5c and interpret as clog2, but it’s not true clog2. The dynamic range was baked into the clog3 curve which is similar to clog(1), and so there aren’t any tangible benefits to interpreting as clog 2. Gerald Undone did a test with this on the r5c and saw there was no benefit to this, and it behaved very much like the original clog.
Excellent comparison Josh! I just released a video today about the cooling grip and I referenced your vid to my subs because when it gets down to the technical you are much better than me. I can’t wait until you go full hybrid and get into photography😊. We’ll get you there one day😂
Some people are born to teach. They're good at it without consciously trying. You, sir, are a good teacher. Just want to say thanks for all you do! Oh, and add me to the list of very happy R5C owners. I actually just got a second one for perfect matching in post.
I love that the R5C has so many video format options. All the compressed formats, XF-AVC, Internal RAW (8K 60p), 8K downsampled 4K out to a Ninja for ProRes and ProRes RAW in 8K and 6K (up to 60p) .. even cropped 6K is downsampled to 4K out to a Ninja for plain ProRes. Internal RAW uses Clog2. Good stuff. It could use a bit better autofocus, but it’s still a great video camera. Will there be an R5C II?
Your videos aret too good, this video is the one i was waiting for. Given me a lot clarity on r5c vs r52 .. really detialed comparison.. 👌🏻 Pls let me know if R5C can record 4k/2k/FHD 60 RAW and interpret as clog 2..?
Hey Josh! Thanks for making this video 🙏 How about getting something like C70 or C80? Or why don't you switch to Sony (sorry if i you talked about it in one of yours videos and I missed it). Cheers!
You're welcome. I've owned the C70 and will be testing the C80 soon. I have been in several camera systems over the past few years, including a lot of time with Sony. I don't switch from one company to another, I live in multiple systems.
I will say Ive been using the R5c as my main camera for over 6 months now and have used it every weekend and i have to say the digital IS is great BUT i still have some weird "wobbles" that come from the digital IS and it drives me nuts. On a gimbal i really don't need it but i will say having Digital IS with the camera just on a mono pod is honestly a lifesaver Maybe it was my mistake to have Digital IS on while on a gimbal, didn't think there would be an issue but there is sometimes when people are dancing. Any advice would be great and im staying canon, i don't want to learn another operation system, it already a huge jump coming from a R7 to a r5c and the cinema OS definitely took a bit to get used to.
I had the C70 and sold it to get the R5 C. I had the budget to buy another on but got another R5 C instead. It’s just too versatile, while the C70 has gorgeous footage, I don’t think it matches up to the R5 C. I did own an R6 II - that is a perfect wedding cam: oversampled up to 4K60 (didn’t overheat for short clips), long takes in 4k 25p didn’t overheat for me either. Ibis. 2+ hour battery life. The image also has some secret sauce. If someone offered me a free R6 II or C70, I’d take the R6 II. I was also at a wedding last month and both videographers were using R6 IIs with rf 24-70. Hope this is useful :)
End of the day, I recommended best solution, 😁 If you are Canon person, you should get both of them. I feel that Canon will announce the New R5C brand in 2025. All the disadvantages mentioned are gone and the price is around $5000. THANK YOU FOR VIDEO.
Thanks! You can turn it off but I don't think it completely locks the sensor down. Also with Canon mirrorless cameras the lens stabilization is tied to the IBIS. So you can't use lens stabilization with IBIS. Either both on or both off.
Been shooting tons of 8k60 raw light on my R5ii, imho that’s the way to go for slowmo on that camera. Sure the files are large but they’re not insane, you mostly shoot in small bursts on 60p, and hard drives are cheap these days. The only time I’ve gone to 4k XAVC is for really long take stuff like interviews, and have yet to overheat the camera in 4k 24p fine.
Great video …in your opinion for wildlife…relatively short clips what is the best r3 or r5 11 ?…we already have r3 which is great all round…but deciding on another r3 or r511…or even r1 one of usually does photos and the other films 👍
There is a new firmware coming to R5C in December which will allow 8K60 recording without the need for external power, just with internal power as long as you use the latest “P” battery. I’m not sure the new firmware would affect your battery life testing of 4K60fps though.. Maybe even better battery life??
Hey Josh, love your thorough comparisons between the R5 II and R5C, but what are your thoughts on the new VCM lenses Canon has released so far, and which of the two camera bodies would pair well with them? I ask because I’ve only mainly seen them on the R5, R6 II, or R5 II. I rarely see them on the R5C and I’m wondering if that’s because the lens lacks IS and the R5C also lacks IBIS?
Thanks! Yeah I haven't gotten a chance to try those lenses yet. Yes they lack stabilization and you would be relying on the digital IS in the R5C and any other stabilization methods like gimbals, tripods, etc.
Your tests made me think of another question - what would an Atomos receive when the camera is set 8K60 internally on the R5 II. I tested both 8K60 RAW LT and 4K60 SRAW and compared them to the 4K60 LGOP internal mode when connected to an Atomos. The footage recorded via the Atomos when it’s in internal RAW mode is definitely sharper and appears to be over-sampled.

I’d be very interested to see you test the dynamic range. I think it’s quite underrated for video and in fact if you’re not shooting raw 8k. The r1 is better in video. And 6k raw up to 60 is no slouch. Value your reviews so just asking if it’s something you may do. Thanks!
I don't currently have plans to test the R1. I would love to try it at some point, but unfortunately I don't think it will happen any time soon. Thanks for watching the video!
Your findings on the poor rolling shutter of the r5ii in video is why I asked about the R1 yesterday. Are they going to do the same thing with the R1 where they've improved photo rolling shutter by 2X only to make the video the same speed? Would love to know and save myself a couple thousand dollars
My current situation is a shoot the R6II for sports video and it's video rolling shutter ruins some shots but the R5II offers zero improvement. Under the lighting that usually ruins shots I generally can't use over 60fps due to flicker
@Josh_Sattin I understand, I was just relating your findings to my situation. Turns out you're going to test the C80, which might actually be pretty close to the R1 in video. Totally forgot about that option, If it just had 6k60 it might be perfect as I suspect the rolling shutter is nearly the same.
Hello, I currently have a Fujifilm XH2-S. I also use a Canon R6 with RF 15-35mm and RF 28-70mm lenses for photography. I'm considering selling the Fujifilm and buying a Canon R5C to use with RF system lenses. However, I couldn't find a proper comparison for low-light performance between the Fujifilm and Canon at night. Since I do wedding photography, night quality is very important to me. I would love to get recommendations from those who have experience. Also, would the lack of IBIS in the R5C be a problem for me?
Thank you for the info Josh! My line of work I have to do a lot of gimbal work and I am looking to replace my canon r7 on my ronin. Do you see much of a difference going from the fixed sensor to the stabilized sensor when putting theses cameras on a gimbal? For reference I have to get a lot of shots physically running alongside power equipment.
@@Josh_Sattin Primarily rolling shutter and when I do early morning/ sunset/ night shots full frame is best. I will be purchasing one of these with a 35 1.4..... Great video 🤩 If connecting an Atomos Ninja V recorder for the R5II would it be possible to record 4K fine in 24/30fps for long shoots without overheating?
Thanks! You can turn the IBIS off but it is also tied to the stabilization in the lenses so either both on or both off. When you turn IBIS off in a camera I'm not sure it locks it down as much as it being a non-stabilized sensor though.
IBIS wiggle is a huge factor, absolutely awful in the r5 and hardly better in the r5ii. Still for me clog2 matches sony DR better so i had to upgrade frok r5ii
If someone made a LUT that perfectly matches the R5ii colors to the cinema line colors I would probably switch. Having almost perfect autofocus is just too convenient.
They probably could technically add Clog2 to any camera but they won't do it. Sony put Slog3 in their older 8-bit cameras and it was basically unusable. Check out this video for more information about Canon's log profiles: ua-cam.com/video/PGp2-Mu5ElI/v-deo.html
I assume you are asking about the R5II since the R5C can can not record in Clog2. On both cameras when you record in raw you can select Clog2 or Clog3 in the raw controls. If you record in Clog2 on the R5II then it will have to be in a raw codec so the difference will be raw vs not raw.
It’s crazy how 2 years later we are still comparing! I have the R5c and getting the new Lp p battery 🔋 it’s like a new camera

A techinical question, is it possible put c-log 2 via firmware update (if Canon willing) or is a hardware-sensor thing?
They probably could technically add Clog2 to any camera but they won't do it. Sony put Slog3 in their older 8-bit cameras and it was basically unusable. Check out this video for more information about Canon's log profiles: ua-cam.com/video/PGp2-Mu5ElI/v-deo.html
Are there differences between interpreting C-Log 2 in post vs shooting it in-camera?
I assume you are asking about the R5II since the R5C can can not record in Clog2. On both cameras when you record in raw you can select Clog2 or Clog3 in the raw controls. If you record in Clog2 on the R5II then it will have to be in a raw codec so the difference will be raw vs not raw.
Are the R5C shots on a gimbal or with Digital IS?
In terms of the shots shown in this video, some were handheld and some were on a gimbal.
Super🎉
Hello , I have question, if you use R5ii 4k 60p battery life?

@ Thanks
What resolutions are over sampled?
I talk about that in this video.
what one better to record weddings in 4k and 8k?
For most people I would recommend the R5C since it has a fan and will not overheat.
@@Josh_Sattin and r5c 100% has all same photo modes as r5 as looking to do stills
👍🏾👍🏾👍🏾
I have r5c. which is better for video rf 14-35 f4. or 15-35 f2.8?
Always choose the faster lens if your budget allows
@ which is faster :)🙏
That shadow difference in RAW and Log is not subtle at all!
In the R5C
The R5ii is clearly better with clog 2 if we're being honest..
