For years I have been asking for the iPad Pro to get pro features like mouse & keyboard support, windowed applications, external monitor support, and pro applications... and well it's finally here. Apple has added all of these features to the iPad Pro, but at the same time they have made the Mac a better value than ever before... so it's time to settle the DEBATE which should you get an iPad Pro or a MacBook Pro?

The biggest issue with the iPad Pro is the iPadOS. It's too locked down. Multitasking is too controlled. The sizes and positions of the windows are only what Apple thinks they should be. I tried to do serious work on the iPad Pro and it took soo much more effort to do the simplest tasks. Plus most apps aren't on the iPad. Real pro apps. FCP isn't a pro app just prosumer. DaVinci Resolve is a professional app but it only works from internal media. The iPad is just not a professional device.

And all the tattoo artists I’ve used in the last few years ONLY use an iPad Pro, and they love it. Using an Apple Pencil with Procreate, and a wireless printer, tattoo artists are killing it with a iPad Pro!

Really great comparison video Greg. Fundamentally, I use my iPad Pro as a convenience for email, web browsing and Apps, but still use a PC for work, so I’m happy with that balance. I really wish they had the camera in horizontal view for video conferencing.

I have both. My iPad Pro is 256gb - the magic keyboard is nowhere near as usable as the MacBook keyboard. I have found the Apple pencil really useful, and, of course the iPad’s portability is stellar, the camera is also really handy and takes great pics. While it’s more locked in, I prefer the music app on the iPad. I wish the MacBook had face id, but it is far superior sound wise and the battery life is sensational. However, if I had to choose one, I’d choose the MacBook.

I was that guy. Magic Keyboard, Apple Pencil… But after using the iPad Pro as my primary setup for three years, I've finally switched to the M series MacBooks. They outperform the iPad in every task I undertake, making it impractical to continue seeking iPad alternatives that require more effort. Honestly, even with the touch feature, it's just not worth the hassle.

Agreed. I have a working iPad Pro 2018 with a cracked glass, still usable. But getting it "repaired" by Apple, meaning getting a refurbished iPad, costs close to 800€, and it's still an already old device. While I managed to get a like new MacBook Air m2 with 16GB of Ram for just 1000. So now I can keep the iPad as a consumption device, and the Air for production (music and light video).

Apple track pad and Logitech k380…..
I have used the k380 for more hours of typing than I can think of for nearly 2 years and still on the original replaceable batteries.
Use a cheap keyboard and an expensive trackpad optimized for the iPad and it’s way cheaper than Magic Keyboard.
For most people, including me, we do basic computer task and don’t need anymore than an ipad.
Additionally, as another commenter said, if you get a little water on the keyboard or trackpad, you just worry about that part.
I have used the iPad Pro M2 12.9 only for over a year as my 2017 air got a bit slow and battery died. It took a small amount of time to get used to, but was easy. Stage manager was also a great addition because before I hated cut off screens using easily breakable Apple cables to mirror my phone since 2015.

About the ipad: There is a "workaround" about the audio sources you can play music and game at the same time. Normally, when you switch to a game, your music will pause, but if you use headphones or other devices that can send "Play/Pause" command to the ipad, the music will resume while the game is active.

For me, the 11 is just a good form factor. I don’t want a big laptop in my hands. Just something the size of a big magazine. It’s pretty cool that I can connect to controller when I want. It’s not a business machine for me so it’s pretty good as a consumer product for my needs.

Considering that I don’t mind buying the extra things to enhance the usability of the iPad and they have dongles that can be used to give it extra ports on top of using iCloud and an external drive for saving everything. I think it’s worth the extra money. It also is more portable. Has the pencil and back camera which I like. I also don’t do any kind of crazy hard ultra detailed work. I use it for writing, streaming and gaming apps. It works for me and my minimalist ways. Everything dongles n all can fit into my backpack and I’m ready for whatever. Minimizing life and things to bare minimum so this was an awesome video. Will like and subscribe ❤

I tried using my iPad Pro as a desktop, just because it’s the only M1 Chip I have. It’s the little things that kill you. Plug in to external screen and the apps are all massive, text is massive. It can’t deal with ultrawide displays. There are no scaling options. The mouse tracking and scroll wheel are awful. Better with a Magic Trackpad. Audio sources change on their own. External camera may or may not work, and may or may not be used. Just running it native alongside a Mac, and using the Mac keyboard and mouse seamlessly is viable, and even using it as an external display for macOS is viable, but it absolutely cannot replace a Mac.

The big thing that is keeping me from choosing an iPad is that I need a relational database program for my business and currently I don't know of any suitable database apps for iPad. I use to to use Microsoft Access, but even that app is only available for Windows. I have been using LibreOffice Base on my M1 Mac Mini. It is a good database, but has a learning curve to use. To use Access, I would have to install Windows on my Mac. Unfortunately, Parallells Desktop iwith Windows is crippled on the new Apple Silicon Macs. I am actually feeling a little torn about what computer or iPad to get. I am choosing between Mac, Windows, or iPad. I love the speed of the M3 MacBook Pro, but iPad is better for reading ebooks.

I love the video and subscribed! I’m a 3D artist and the iPad Pro is like a Swiss Army knife for me. I mean the other day I was 3D sculpting like I was drawing in a sketchbook enjoying a coffee at Starbucks! That’s amazing. Not saying I couldn’t sculpt with a MacBook Pro but it isn’t the same as holding the screen. iPad OS has potential to be better than Mac OS. Due to its ability to adapt and evolve. MacOS is kinda just stuck with the same old desktop setup that people will burn down apple if they tried to drastically change it. The future is definitely a computer that you can shape it to whatever you need at the time. Much like the IPad is heading towards.

I rather go with the Ipad Pro over their laptops since it's much more versible and fun. You have the Apple Pen plus you can get the keyboard. I'm also not too worried about being able to open up multiple screens like you can on the Air or Pro laptops. There's also much more games on the ipad especially coming for the ipad pro with the new m3 chip because Apple striked up a deal for console game developers. I got the mackbook air in midnight blue last year on sale for $947 but I wish I would've went with the Ipad Pro. It's more exciting and fun to go with and more flexible and versatile like you and I said.

  • @DojoOfCool

The best thing about my iPad Pro is it was such a PIA it got me to go buy a MacBook Air M2 (MBA M2) to replace it. Where the iPad I barely used it for the things I bought it for I've ended up using the MBA M2 way more that I thought I would. I actually found the iPad more of a hassle to use in that you have to use one hand to hold it or pay for the Magic Keyboard or some other stand to hold it up. The Logic and Final Cut app sounded like a good idea to some, but seems like most the people who tried them switched back to using MacBook versions. The since USB C port is another pain especially if doing music or other things that need a port. So now you have some hub a bunch cables hanging off the iPad. Then apps like Logic and Final Cut need lots of screen real estate so really need an external monitor. The iPad is good for students or people who got to meetings a lot and need to take notes, the pencil makes it great for that, but past that it's not a computer replacement. The biggest thing wrong to me about iPad was iPadOS its a toy of an operating system and to me very non-intutiving to use. So people if you want a electronic notepad get an iPad if you want to do real work buy a MacBook Air M2 basically the same size so just as portable buy way more powerful.

The direction Apple has gone in with the higher end iPads is rather perplexing - on the one hand, it’s clearly intended as one device in your collection of Apple products. There are many things you can’t do with just an iPad even in terms of basic Apple things such as synching. And while you can use a mouse with it, the interface isn’t great. Also, you can’t do any real programming that requires the terminal. On the other hand, it’s priced as if it is some sort of laptop replacement.

might be you have to look it up in the dictionary. "Versatility" the quality of being versatile (= able to change easily or to be used for different purposes). iPad can only do one thing, drawing.

The iPad being more expensive is really not that shocking. The iPad has more versatility and functionality. It also depends on who is using it and what for to determine what is more valuable.

Powerful OS vs extremely limited OS. Powerful, fully-featured apps vs at least somewhat limited (and often extremely limited) mobile apps. Unless you can only afford one device and your use cases are heavily biased toward needing a touchscreen and the versatility of a tablet, I cannot see how the iPad competes with the MacBook.
Some people (esp UA-camrs) prefer using the iPad for everything, but I use a desktop computer and an iPad Air and Mini all three and mostly for exclusive tasks; the exception is that I use one or the other iPad for a lot of internet stuff that I also do on my desktop, but other than being stuck in my office chair at my workstation, the desktop is superior at pretty much everything (I have a 24" 4K screen, so same amazing crisp text and graphics as the iPads.
I used an M1 MacBook Air for a year when it first came out, but the laptop form factor just does not work for me. If I need portability I use one or the other of my iPads and an external keyboard (the stand/cover/keyboard/trackpad combos throw me right back into laptop form factor). I guess I am old school, but I also prefer discrete components rather than everything built in, and that was just emphasized with my MacBook Air: the keyboard failed and had to be replaced. I did not have to pay out of pocket because AppleCare covered it, but the repair cost half the price of the computer. The next one would have been out of pocket, so, nope. I traded it in for the iPad Air. Although altogether more size and weight, I use a separate keyboard I love, and if it breaks I am only out $100. Already it has lasted far longer than the keyboard on the MacBook.
So for me, I cannot ever see an iPad becoming my main device, much less my exclusive device. All props to those who can, but I think as this video shows they are spending a lot more to get something overall far less capable than a MacBook.

1 big difference. If you spill a few drops of water on your keyboard, you will almost always end up with $800 in damage or worse on a MacBook. Not with an iPad because the hardware and software are behind the screen.

The problem isn't the iPad, it's the OS. MacOS on an iPad Pro is the only thing that will make true use of its power.
You'll need to have super specific and niche needs to be able to replace a laptop with an iPad. I'm happy with my M1 iPad Pro, but I do feel like it will never be used to its full potential until we get MacOS on it.

I bought the 12.9 Pro with the M1 back then (the expensive 1TB version) - did use it only for browsing because of the lack of pro-apps - so soon after I bought the Macbook Air M1 (27 months ago) - that worked well for me (bought Final Cut Pro etc for it) - now after 26 months the screen of the macbook show defects (vertical lines) which is very annoying (not useable anymore) - repair will cost over 600 euros - which I do not want to invest in Apple anymore (after 30 year of Windows laptopusage without any screendefects). Final Cut Pro is available for the iPad Pro but I have to pay again for it (WTF). At the moment I miss Photo AI Denoise on the iPad (Lightroom) the most, or DXO Pure Raw which also is only available for Mac OS/Windows. I am done with Apple!!!

09:35 None of these displays are the best in laptop and tablet industry.
Samsung Galaxy Tab S9 Ultra's Dynamic Amoled 2x 120Hz display is excellent and Asus Zenbook Oled, Lenova Yoga 9i Oled, Dell XPS 15 Oled displays are comparably better displays. I appriciate long battery hours, M3 max powerful and efficient SOC, space black color. Unfortunately still there is no convertible, oled, 120hz, touchscreen, +1600 nit SDR bright macbook available. These products does not deserve premium price.
If Apple is a must for me I'll wait for M3 Macbook Air with 16gb ram. Buy both new M3 Macbook Air + 11th gen Standart Ipad without accesories.

I don’t think you used enough sarcasm in your comparison. I think I’d recommend another take or two. Point of order, a comparison of internal memory of a new iPad Pro to a MacBook-whatever isn’t the comparison. Buy the least amount of internal storage in the iPad Pro and add on an external storage device for storage. I think it would be very low in side by side storage at a lower cost. Even iCloud storage is some of the best storage at the lowest price. Plus, I can buy a ton of iCloud storage and share it between family members.
Sarcasm is typically used to distract the listener from recognizing the just how weak the arguments actually are.
Typically I find when someone finds it necessary to use sarcasm it tips me off that weak arguments are being used to m

iPad unfortunately is a neutered version of macOS, it really only works for casual and light work like typing into document, creating presentations, sending emails etc. once you venture out of those tasks and need to do something else like opening text editors, and running docker containers, then the iPad is no longer usable for those usecases 😢
