TU so much for a very enjoyable podcast❤❤❤
So glad you enjoyed it!
I’ve been to Amsterdam yrs ago but look forward to visiting again, esp Stephen&Penelope!!
You will enjoy it!!
Have made many quilts, made 100 things when the pandemic was on, and knitted 6 beaded purses and many other projects. I have sewn thousands of miles.Anita
Wonderful! Beaded purses - that sounds like a fun project, and a great gift.
I am glad you liked Amsterdam, love from Holland Anja.
I did! It’s a beautiful city!
I can’t work lace or colorwork without charts! I will make too many mistakes! Plus a chart helps speed everything up! I agree 100%
Yes! Charts help you quickly understand visually what you’re supposed- I feel like reading line by line, there’s a lag while my brain figures out what the stitches are supposed to look like.
Another fabulous episode Melanie! I wasn’t knitting when I last went to Amsterdam so really appreciate you taking me there! Really look forward to your next videos. Hope you enjoyed Vogue knitting last weekend.
Thanks so much, Beverly! I’m so glad you enjoyed the video. NYC is coming soon . . .
i agree with your take of West patterns. I have knit several of his patterns. Line by line, is a pain..You always have the feeling you have to read every line. Charts for me also are better , especially for lace and cables!
Totally!!! I feel like he could do this very easily - or someone on his staff could do it!
Thanks for this video Melanie! I live in Amsterdam and didn't know about these stores 🤓 I'm just getting back into knitting and have already saved them on my map to go visit soon!
Oh good. What fun you will have!!
Nice to see you have enjoyed my hometown of Amsterdam so much. Love all three yarnshops, but shop most at Hooks and Yarn for the creative yarns and at the Afstap for more classical yarns. I am not a knitter but crocheter though. Stephen is one of the knitters that make me want to learn about knitting more, but without charts....... I don't know, I love charts and am visually learning, the scripts are very abstract and cryptic for me, in crochet or knitting. Never noticed the kits at the Afstap, so thank you for mentioning them.
Love to wander, feel and drool over the yarn now and then at Stephen & Penelope's. Did not buy there yet, first work with what 'better quality' yarns that I still have. Love how you have tried all the typical Dutch food treats, though original poffertjes only come with butter and powdersugar. The Nutella hype is taking over and is extremely commercially driven. With love from Amsterdam. ❤
Thank you so much!! I am so very glad you enjoyed the video.
Another lovely video Melanie. Loved seeing your trip to Amsterdam & the sweater your wearing is so nice. Thanks from Scotland 🏴
Thanks so much, Christine!!
Hey there Melanie! Your between the petals sweater is gorgeous! Amsterdam looks amazing, and the food! Wow. Those yarn stores were all so quaint and lovely and how cool to visit Stephen and Penelope. I always wated to try Marie Wallins yarn, it looks so beautiful and I love her designs. What a great spinning smock! I used to sew in college, but I stopped when I went to work. I bought a sewing machine hoping to get back into it, but that was 10 years ago and it's still in the box! LOL Thanks for the tour of Amsterdam and another great episode.
Thanks so much, Carin! I’m so glad you enjoyed the episode. I have to admit the sewing machine sometime sits idle for months. Knitting is my first love!
❤😊❤😊❤😊
🙏 😊
Difference of dialect, seamstress, and spinster and I do both.
Very nice episode but oh my goodness! Where on earth did that horrendous expression “SEWIST” come from? And why does everyone now feel they have to adopt it? It’s a non-word! For centuries we have managed quite well with sewer, needle-worker, stitcher, without having recourse to make up this silly sounding expression! What next? KNITTIST? QUILTIST? SPINIST? Please, no more.
Hi Lynne- glad you enjoyed the episode! You ask a good question- where did the word sewist come from? As someone who enjoys thinking about language, I did some investigating. Check out this article from Threads magazine:www.threadsmagazine.com/2012/10/11/sewer-vs-sewist. Turns out the term has been around since the mid 19th century. I use it as it seems the online sewing community employs the term to describe someone who sews for pleasure or as a hobby as opposed to a seamstress or a tailor who sews professionally.
