Years ago I wanted a sewing machine, but..never really payed much attention to going to a true sewing store to buy 1, I seen a Brothers brand at Walmart when they first came into business for us all. Now after listening to Jordon, makes me very happy I never purchased that Brothers sewing machine from Walmart in our bigger town about 25 plus miles from us. I’d of probably had to of thrown away. I now have a what I feel is a Brothers sewing machine that cost me way more and very does embroidery, I’m sure the cheaper one didn’t do this embroidery. Thanks for all the cleaning tips, we clean our sewing machine sometimes every other time, or depending on how many quilts maybe I’ve sewn at the time. Y’all are awesome.
I am thankful that my dad taught me how to clean my machines when I was in the 8th grade, my first year in Home Living. I went on to get 4 years of Home Economics. So basically I have been sewing with a machine since I was 13 years old and now 72 yesrs old. I have always used a Kenmore and still have 2. O love them and have had them professionally cleaned several times. I am going to save this tutorial to remind me what I am suppose to do. Thank you and your mom for the advice. Perfect timing. Sewing my stacks blocks this afternoon and bobbin thread started doing crazy things. Stopped, cleaned with Q tips and shaving brush, , threaded , tried again. Better but not right. Walked away. Found this video watched , cleaned again with canned air assist this time and got some dust bunnies out. It’s working perfectly! Back to sewing stacks! THANKS!
It’s called planned obsolescence… plastic parts don’t need oil (but will break) but metal on metal always needs oil at some stage (not even mentioning motherboard/electronics). People will then find in the 5-odd years, when their machines inevitably kack out and they take it to a dealer… the cost to repair or service isn’t worth it and they need a new machine… yet if you’ve done a little maintenance yourself, you’ll have got another 5-10+years out of that same machine yourself. Luckily, these days we have UA-cam!
Thank you so much. I've sewn for over 70 years and still found this very helpful. I might add another little tool to your "in between" cleaning kit. I bought a container of disposable eyelash brushes. They have the same little bristles as the pipe cleaners and are relatively soft but they are attached to their soft plastic stick so you can't loose them.
I use a makeup brush too although I think mine was originally intended for either eyeliner or lipliner. The bristles are way softer than the cleaning brush that came with my Brother but it still attracts those dust bunnies !
So thankful I watched this video, because I was ready to purchase a new machine and was doing research on what kind to buy. You mentioned purchasing from a local quilt shop and all the reasons why I should. That was such good advice. Not only did I get a much better product than I had first thought of, but service to boot. Plus a great place for classes and help on projects. Appreciate your advice.
I have 5 to 6 Pfaffs and 1 Singer. Absolutely love my Pfaffs. My 1475 was bought in 1993 and still working beautifully. Buy a good machine from a great dealer. ❤️❤️❤️

At the beginning you empathized consulting the owners manual yes, each machine is different and has its’ own idiosyncrasies.I sew on an Elna SU (1971) and love it. Now I need to get in the habit of technical servicing. Appreciated the tip of compressed air I guess more is not always better. Thank you

I have also dumped some bad oil, that was a great tip. Luckily I purchased one of the machine maintenance kits during 12 days of Christmas, so I have new oil!! Unfortunately, the shop that I purchased my Viking embroidery machine from has gone out of business after 35 years, another victim of Puppies!

I really appreciate this video. I just finished a quilt, and dusted the bobbin case between stages. Now that I’ve finished it I cleaned and oiled my machine. The Sewer’s Aid made a huge difference in the sound of my Elna 650. Thank you, Jordan.
Great video, thank you. I always wondered w hat the inside of my machine looks like, now I know. I have 3 machines and I do the basic cleaning very often and they go in for service every year. I split them up and 1 is in the shop every 4 months. And thank you again for your great videos.
This was very informative. My Husqvarna dealer closed about3 months after I bought my Epic..... 😢 I chose this brand due to it being local but now I have to travel to get my machine serviced by a Viking dealer. Wish I would have gone with my second choice of machine. As they say hindsight is always 20/20
My local Husqvarna dealer closed, also. I’ve since moved and the local dealer sells Janome. The Husqvarna dealer an hour away has also closed. 😔 I’m sucking it up and traveling two hours for repair. After my retirement in 1-1/2 years, I’m moving away from here, so I’ll see what’s available then and buy local, crossing my fingers as I do.

Interesting information. I was told by my Bernina dealer never to use canned air. I use a small cosmetic brush but I like the stir stick/pipe cleaner idea! Thanks.
Great video. I need to take really good care of my Singer Heavy duty. You know, not spending money on it so I can more quickly afford a nice machine. I do clean it regularly and just use pipe cleaners and not the stir sticks. Just fold the end over, clean and cut off the used end and fold it over again. Of course I bought about 500 cotton pipe cleaners for a buck at a yard sale so can afford to waste them. They are my favorite tool for cleaning my machine.

I remember talking to a gal during a class one time and the subject of cleaning our machines and changing needles came up. I was shocked when she said she’d been sewing for years and had NEVER , EVER cleaned out here machine , oiled it, or changed the needle. She was bragging about it like her machine was so awesome she didn’t need to do any of that.
Could it be that she’s just mending some stuff here and there? ‘Coz if you’re constantly using your machine, those fiber dust will build up eventually, and you needle will get blunt.
Fantastic information. I have a Pfaff Quilt Expression 4.0. There is not information in the manual on where this machine should be oiled. Do you have any information on how to oil this machine? I clean my machine every time I change the bobbin and keep it very clean, but have not oiled it since it was serviced 6 months ago.
Great video , so informative! My experience with removing the screws from the plate taught me a valuable lesson. I dropped a screw down into the bottom of the machine and could not retrieve it. After that happened, I never remove screws without leaving the little plastic bobbin cover in place. Maybe this happened to someone else out there? Thanks again for great information!
Perhaps the screws are magnetic and a magnet on a string could retrieve them? If dropped on a rug, a magnet might also find any screws trying to escape. Also, when I take something apart (like a laptop computer), I put all the screws in a cup so they don't go traveling. Several cups and labels could also be used.

I have a small machine that uses some plastic gears in the top past the head assembly, what is the white colored "grease" on these parts? This machine is 2 years past its warranty, fully mechanical and still sews beautifully. I would like to replace this paste with a fresh coating.

It’s knocking on the end where I wind bobbins. It has been through the wringer sort of. There is a story that goes along with that problem. The training for Pfaff, Viking, husqvarna snd singer is in Nashville. With mandatory updates every year. It’s required that dealerships have certified technicians.
I did as this video states to buy from a local dealer, but after the sale am terribly disappointed with that store's service. Make sure BEFORE you buy to look at the ratings of the place in which you are considering making your purchase. Not all business owners are the same.
I was also told never to use an air can to clean my machine. Why? Because most of us don’t know how to do it properly. Leave that to professionals. Use the the pipe cleaner method as Jordan has described. Gentle, wipe, gentle clean.
Thank you I have a 50 year old Bernina that doesn't feel right cleaned and oiled regularly. I called a shop and they are not taking any more repairs until caught up. I have to try another quilt shop.
Uh oh...I have a wonderful Pfaff 2042 I purchased around 20 years ago. I used it only sporadically for many years, until I retired. Since then it has had more regular use, and I have had it serviced several times. But, I am still using the oil that came with it when I do my bobbin area cleaning. I guess I need to get some new oil! Should I get the sewers aid or is there another type I should purchase? The manual says only one drop for every 20 hours, so a little goes a long way.
You mention a cleaning kit (at 5:58 or so) but do not offer one on your website (though maybe I missed it... but it isn't listed under the video). Perhaps it is only for those who can walk into your store and cannot be ordered on line, though apparently the "All Purpose Sewer's Aid" can be put in a cart, ordered. I haven't gotten my new machine yet (maybe today!) and so I haven't visited any local fabric stores (or Walmart) to begin to make my own kit.

Thank for making this video. I have just one question. You showed and instructed everyone to oil your bobbin casing but nothing else. Are we not also supposed to oil the shaft and other moving parts?
Refer to your owners manual. Many of the older machines and long arms have holes and oil ports. But the newer machines do not require it. Featherweights have over 30 places that require oil or grease!
I have a good question. You mentioned on your tutorial video purchasing a new Brother Luminaire XP2, and was send for servicing for less than 3 months? Can they really replace it? I NEVER had a brand new sewing machine that was sent out for service in my 51 yrs of sewing. I have 25 yrs Bernina & 15 yrs Viking Embroidery machine. Please help me?
I've only ever owned one machine, a Viking Daisy 325. She's one that was made in Sweden, so about 20 years old. Almost entirely metal inside. I was told when I bought her the dealer said to never ever oil. Now I feel a little sick, wondering if I didn't care for her properly.
Hmmmm I will ask Jordan about that. I know there are machines whose innards are oiled by technicians only, no outside holes, but I would think the race still needs an occasional swipe. But if she’s still good at 20 years you haven’t beaten her up too bad. I’ll ask him.
I have a Janome. We moved across country. I found a certified dealer where I moved to. They have been wonderful and the cost was not outrageous for servicing the machine. I clean the bobbin area regularly as instructed by the certified dealer and the manual. I was told by the dealer not to oil it, Jordan is saying to oil it no matter the name brand. Is the certified dealer oiling it when I have it serviced? I am feeling like I shortened the life of my beautiful machine. Jordan, have I?
My sewing teacher taught us at the beginning of each year how to clean our machine. I have a Janome machine. But one thing that was different from what you said was that we were to put one drop of oil on that centre little felt circle but not anywhere else. Is that correct or should I have been putting oil in other spots. I clean my machine once a week and have it serviced once a year.
My hearing is not the best (don’t get old,) so I missed the name of the oil you suggested would be good for my machine. Please let me know what it is. Thanks
I bought a high end machine from the local dealer. She closed the business soon after my purchase. I did not even receive the training. No one bought her business. There is no one near me to service my machine. It has not been serviced since I bought it in 2015. I am very disappointed.
thank heaven I have a mechanical sewing machine, instead of a computer machine. I oil my machine 2 times a year. It is a 1963 Kenmore sewing machine in my sewing room.
Dyana I have a 1970s super high shank mechanical Kenmore inherited from my mom over 30yrs ago. She would take the tension assembly on any mechanical machine apart. and clean and replace it, when what she needed to do was clean and oil the machine. I was told mechanical. Kenmore love/need oil.

I was told the same about canned air. I use a cosmetic brush, and will pull out a pipe cleaner and add to my tool box.
Also told NOT ro use canned air on my Janome Machine.

It’s knocking on the end where I wind bobbins. It has been through the wringer sort of. There is a story that goes along with that problem. The training for Pfaff, Viking, husqvarna snd singer is in Nashville. With mandatory updates every year. It’s required that dealerships have certified technicians.

I did as this video states to buy from a local dealer, but after the sale am terribly disappointed with that store's service. Make sure BEFORE you buy to look at the ratings of the place in which you are considering making your purchase. Not all business owners are the same.

I was also told never to use an air can to clean my machine. Why? Because most of us don’t know how to do it properly. Leave that to professionals. Use the the pipe cleaner method as Jordan has described. Gentle, wipe, gentle clean.
Thank you I have a 50 year old Bernina that doesn't feel right cleaned and oiled regularly. I called a shop and they are not taking any more repairs until caught up. I have to try another quilt shop.

Uh oh...I have a wonderful Pfaff 2042 I purchased around 20 years ago. I used it only sporadically for many years, until I retired. Since then it has had more regular use, and I have had it serviced several times. But, I am still using the oil that came with it when I do my bobbin area cleaning. I guess I need to get some new oil! Should I get the sewers aid or is there another type I should purchase? The manual says only one drop for every 20 hours, so a little goes a long way.
Any sewing machine oil is ok. Sewers aid is a silicone, an oil alternative. Either is fine.
You mention a cleaning kit (at 5:58 or so) but do not offer one on your website (though maybe I missed it... but it isn't listed under the video). Perhaps it is only for those who can walk into your store and cannot be ordered on line, though apparently the "All Purpose Sewer's Aid" can be put in a cart, ordered. I haven't gotten my new machine yet (maybe today!) and so I haven't visited any local fabric stores (or Walmart) to begin to make my own kit.

Thank for making this video. I have just one question. You showed and instructed everyone to oil your bobbin casing but nothing else. Are we not also supposed to oil the shaft and other moving parts?
Refer to your owners manual. Many of the older machines and long arms have holes and oil ports. But the newer machines do not require it. Featherweights have over 30 places that require oil or grease!
I have a good question. You mentioned on your tutorial video purchasing a new Brother Luminaire XP2, and was send for servicing for less than 3 months? Can they really replace it? I NEVER had a brand new sewing machine that was sent out for service in my 51 yrs of sewing. I have 25 yrs Bernina & 15 yrs Viking Embroidery machine. Please help me?

I've only ever owned one machine, a Viking Daisy 325. She's one that was made in Sweden, so about 20 years old. Almost entirely metal inside. I was told when I bought her the dealer said to never ever oil. Now I feel a little sick, wondering if I didn't care for her properly.
Hmmmm I will ask Jordan about that. I know there are machines whose innards are oiled by technicians only, no outside holes, but I would think the race still needs an occasional swipe. But if she’s still good at 20 years you haven’t beaten her up too bad. I’ll ask him.

Yes, sewers aid oil is universal for all machines.
I have a Janome. We moved across country. I found a certified dealer where I moved to. They have been wonderful and the cost was not outrageous for servicing the machine. I clean the bobbin area regularly as instructed by the certified dealer and the manual. I was told by the dealer not to oil it, Jordan is saying to oil it no matter the name brand. Is the certified dealer oiling it when I have it serviced? I am feeling like I shortened the life of my beautiful machine. Jordan, have I?
My sewing teacher taught us at the beginning of each year how to clean our machine. I have a Janome machine. But one thing that was different from what you said was that we were to put one drop of oil on that centre little felt circle but not anywhere else. Is that correct or should I have been putting oil in other spots. I clean my machine once a week and have it serviced once a year.

That is the homemade tool using a coffee stir stick and a pipe cleaner.

Check your manual before oiling
Some manuals will say they do not need to be oiled but if there are moving parts, oil is necessary.

Use the brush that comes with the machine. Never use canned air. Check the manual- don't oil if it doesn't say to.

I bought a brand new janome 740dc from.a dealer
I bought a high end machine from the local dealer. She closed the business soon after my purchase. I did not even receive the training. No one bought her business. There is no one near me to service my machine. It has not been serviced since I bought it in 2015. I am very disappointed.

thank heaven I have a mechanical sewing machine, instead of a computer machine. I oil my machine 2 times a year. It is a 1963 Kenmore sewing machine in my sewing room.
Dyana I have a 1970s super high shank mechanical Kenmore inherited from my mom over 30yrs ago. She would take the tension assembly on any mechanical machine apart. and clean and replace it, when what she needed to do was clean and oil the machine. I was told mechanical. Kenmore love/need oil.
