    Hi All! This is our video to replace the gas struts on a Porsche 3.2 Carrera. I build a bracket to move one of the dual struts from the left side to the right side to balance the load.
    If you are looking for the struts, you can get them here: Stabilus Gas Charged Lift Support (SG406008): goo.gl/wNsXGc
    The hardware I used is standard 6mm and 4mm bolts and the dimensions of the plate is in the video. Let me know if you have any questions! Thanks!

    Hi Everyone! Is your boot lid droopy? Do you have too many struts on just one side? Do you want to see Franny putter around in the garage? Well, then this video is for you! Today I build a bracket to add the second strut to the right hinge so the boot lid won't get horked any more! If you are completely confused at this point, just watch the video ;) Franny

    Yes, my 1987 911 boot lid is droopy and I'm so glad to happen upon this and your other videos!! Thanks for the extremely straightforward and helpful guide - I feel like I can tackle my own fix now. You make great content!

    Nice little bracket and fit. Taking the full load off the one side and applying it to both sides as it should.
    It's those little custom mods that makes a car more reliable and more enjoyable!

    Good morning Heidi & Franny. Well, headlight clusters need changing on my son's car and ABS sensors need cleaning on mine (plus an oil change)! But, rain and gale force winds here just now have put that on hold, so I'm enjoying one of your videos.
    Like everyone else I do enjoy watching Franny putter around in the garage, but special for you Heidi, thanks for all the effort you must put in on these videos too. John. UK.

      John, Funny. I thought you were in Colorado for a moment. We get Gail force winds where we live in Arvada. Makes for interesting filming even with the garage door shut. I think our third live stream had some wind. Heidi

    Nicely done! In place of bolts I would have used pins and lubricated those with Wurth HHS-K. With bolts I would have used some grease to lubricate the bolt/strut-eye contact. You have primed and painted the hole you drilled on the hinge I imagine.

      Ya know, I could have used a bolt with a smooth shank, huh? That is a good idea!

    Wow, I’m so glad I found this video of yours. I am in the exact situation where I have two decklid shocks on the driver side and nothing on the passenger side and the decklid won’t stay up. Honestly, I doubt my ability to fabricate that extension you so adeptly made, but your video has inspired me to proceed with the dual shock replacement on the drivers side. (I’m more a wood worker than a mechanic, but I’m always up to try something out of my comfort zone). Your video was recorded expertly, well lit, in focus, all things that are not easily done, but you nailed it. I’m going to order my replacement shocks on Pelican and give it a go! Thanks again. Oh, I’m going to scan your UA-cam video library next to see if you’ve done anything with the motors on the windows. My 1987 Targa’s windows are soooo s__l__o__w…..

      I think we had a live stream on fixing the windows of the 3.2 Carrera. That was a long time ago. The video is unedited. I am not sure how watchable it would be.

    Just got done with this hack. Great video. I had to go about 78mm between strut and where it connects to the hinge. Now, the big question: how do I get the left side of deck lid to go flush with quarter panel? Or will it eventually relax since it isn’t being stressed anymore? Thanks

  • @porsche558

    That was a great add on! Sometimes it's the simple things that make all the difference. So odd that Porsche had already engineered a strut mount to the firewall (or fly wall LOL) on both sides but only one hinge got the strut. Makes me wonder if they had originally intended on having a strut on either side but perhaps budget reasons caused them to just stick with one. Also I love your hood prop....best part is it also tells you if everything is level LOL! As always great video, I'm glad I discovered this UA-cam channel!

      Thanks! I've always thought it was strange too. I suppose you could have optioned a Carrera tail on a narrow body car... All the widebody cars would have come from the factory with a tail so they should have the mount on the right side... But, why make two different right hinges? They weren't saving that much metal. This is the sort of thing they got spanked for during the 993 time when they got assistance from former Toyota engineers to pull their manufacturing into the 21st century. That is the reason the Boxster and the 911 were so similar (986/996).

      @HeidiandFranny  6 років тому

      Hi Tommy, We just changed to the Rode remote mic setup. It is a great piece and a real game changer. The sound alternates the highs a bit, but it has great range and the mic they supply is very directional. That means you don't get nearly as much outside noise from the neighborhood! You do need to watch the battery life, but it seems to last for three or four shoots at least. I really like it!

    In case you're interested, the pin (Porsche refers to it as a bolt), spacer and clip stock strut hardware are 999 166 043 02 [2X], 911 511 332 00 and N 012 645 2 [2X]. That's for one side. I just removed a similar aftermarket double strut setup and reverted back to stock single strut configuration.

    Hy Franny. Watching you from Brazil 🇧🇷 and dreaming about buying a 911. They are really expensive here.

    • @HeidiandFranny
      @HeidiandFranny  2 роки тому

      I hear that from many places... I think there were a LOT imported into the USA so that is why the pricing is a bit lower... Maybe you can buy one here and drive it back! We follow a Brazilian sailing channel and they mentioned the import tax is really high :( I hope you can find a car. :)

    Hi Franny, just looked in the PET and the Carrera only had 1 strut from factory, the Turbo had 2 one on each side, but looking at the diagrams in the PET looks like the right hinge is also different from the Carrera models as is indeed another part number (with the bracket for the strut), that is why the body has the fitting for it. The right hinge for the 930 is 93051203600 and the right hinge for the Carrera is 90151203600. You can see the differences if you just enter those part numbers in Google and search images.

    • @HeidiandFranny
      @HeidiandFranny  6 років тому

      Thanks for that. I saw a non-turbo car with the "Carrera" tail from the factory and it had a strut on each side with the correct hinge - all from the factory. In fact, that is where that deck lid came from ;) We have a friend with the same year and color (but a coupe - this is why it is missing the third tail light). I wish I could have talked him out of the hinge as well ;). Thanks for the part numbers. F

      If you are interested in originality, you can always get another second hand, get it prepared & painted and swap it for the one in your car once is painted in the right code, this one is up for $75 in CA: m.ebay.com/itm/911-Used-Right-Rear-Deck-93051203600n1a/112927478459?epid=1787150938&hash=item1a4b0092bb:g:0OwAAOSwT5xZTYhm
      If not just leave the one you made up, it’s works the same way...

    • @HeidiandFranny
      @HeidiandFranny  6 років тому

      Wow, that is all the factory did? The left hinge is a bit more elegant. Thanks for that. I always shoot for originality, but maybe not $75 for a bracket ;) Looks like it was an afterthought for Porsche as well. We have struggled with whether to restore that car or not. It is a good solid runner with a bad paint job and a worn interior - both very expensive to fix. It would be close to $10K for a base restoration - and that would be nothing mechanical. Mileage is just past 100K which isn't bad, but it will never be a collector car. For now, we just drive it and it is very good for that! Got your email, Thanks!! Franny
