Have you ever worked on a tiptronic transmission that jumps from manuel into automatic mode?

  • @jimsutherland6596
    @jimsutherland6596 3 роки тому +3

Have worked on these engines since new, here are several other things I always check when there are idle issues: 1- Make sure throttle linkage is adjusted correctly, and is allowing throttle butterfly to fully return to its stop. This requires checking from gas pedal to top of engine, and especially at the bellcranks on the side of the transmission and the top of the engine. 2- Make sure throttle butterfly stop screw is adjusted correctly. On this FI system it is not used to set idle, only to keep butterfly from wearing throttle bore when closing. 1/2 turn open is the proper adjustment. If one tries to correct a low idle using this screw, it will ruin the adjustment of the idle switch. 3- Make sure the idle switch is good and is adjusted properly. Surprised not to see this mentioned, as it can definitely cause idle to hunt if it’s not. It’s on the rear of the throttle housing and is adjusted by loosening and moving it. Easiest to adjust both stop and switch with the throttle housing off the engine. This is a bit of a tricky adjustment but info explaining the procedure is in the Porsche manual. 4- Check short rubber hose crimped onto left end of vacuum pipe which runs from the intake boot (btwn airflow meter and throttle housing) to the Y-shaped vacuum venturi for the power brakes. These deteriorate after 35 years and can leak. Great videos - wish I had your patience! Sorry I didn’t come across this video series before now. The older I get the more I learn!

Love your channel! I hope you see this comment. Your diagnosis of the idle being too high is spot on. I do have a couple observations for you. Yes- When the DME detects an engine speed over 1200 RPM and the throttle switch is in IDLE position it cuts the fuel to the injectors. This isn't really to prevent runaway- It is to save gas and cut emissions to zero when you take your foot completely off the throttle while driving while the engine RPM is above 1200.
It is still possible that a faulty ICV might still be the issue. I think this might be the case, as after you adjusted the idle on the throttle body and ran the DME in normal mode, the idle didn't seem that steady, and the engine was not running that smoothly.
An other issue is that when you disconnected the Oxygen Sensor the idle speed went up considerably. This means in open loop the system is running rich. In may even be running so rich that the DME can't completely adjust the AF ratio. An overly rich AF would also contribute to a high IDLE. When rich the O2 sensor will read around 0.9 volts, and when lean 0.2 volts.
It will be interesting to hear what you find from the shop when you have them check the O2 levels.

Fifty-five years ago I had one of the first Porsche 911s in the US, a 1966 model, chassis number 901180, the 180th 911 ever built. Six Solex carburetors (actually, two 3-barrel units sharing a common float bowl) and the only transistors in that entire car were in the Blaupunkt radio. I'd pull the engine and transmission out as a unit: Four mounting bolts, one fuel line, a throttle cable, a few wires, and a 10mm bolt to disconnect the shift linkage. It was a 10 minute job including the time spent putting the car up on jackstands. Those were sure simpler times.

I have an SC and had a similar experience. As the car ages and sees one owner after the next the real issue (O2, vac leaks, plugs, coil, valve adjust, distributor or whatever) never gets fixed and what happens is that it just gets "tuned out" and "fixed" by messing with the fuel mixture or idle setting. It's amazing what actually happens to the cars over the years. Love your videos. They are a joy to watch!

Good diagnosis. A note about oxygen sensors there are two different types of o2sensors. Wide band and narrow band. The O2 sensor that you have is a narrow band and should continually change between 100mv -900mv. The ecm use this input after the engine warms up and goes into close loop along with other information sensors to keep the air fuel ratio at the proper level.
Thank you for your videos. They are very helpful and organized. And thank you for sharing your knowledge skills.

Ha, I was screaming at the TV to bridge the idle control pins and set the base idle (but as you pointed out the CO needs to be correct at that base idle so nice to see you did that at the shop 👍.
Also with the oil thermostat open at 90C (right front wing warm) the oil level gauge needs to be near the top. IF your stat is open, you need a tad more oil in your tank.
    Great video Fran!!
We used to have a special tool made out of one of the round relays with two LEDs and a switch on top for that, or just use a cut down Blaupunkt radio key to bridge them. The LEDs were used to give fault code read outs on the later 944 Turbo until the Bosch Hammer came out.
Happy memories for me Fran, lovin your work.

I recognise the surging. My car does that for a short while after a complete cold start. Never gave it a thought. I now understand this must be due to the oxygen sensor needing to warm up. Keep up the great work. Best regards from the Netherlands.

Excellent work. So the injectors were gummy, someone compensated for them by adjusting the idle ( which is an old shade tree mechanics move) you cleaned the injectors and needed to reset the idle. The spark plugs, wires, coil, O2 sensor tried to get into the act because their egos were bruised, I don’t blame them, so they got replaced. Hi Heidi and Franny Just an update on our 1991 964 high idle issue. After exhausting my limited testing skills, I ended up taking the car to our local Porsche dealer. They have one mechanic in particular that is an expert on older Porsches. The problem ended up being a faulty oxygen sensor and more importantly three of the couplers that connect the intake manifold to the cylinders were cracked, one was split in two. Amazing that the car ran as well as it did.

First, that clean engine compartment in the opening sequence was beautiful. We had a similar idle issue with the 911SC but that was a CIS engine; no popping though. I recall we did something about the O2 sensor and the mixture adjustment certainly needed to be turned, using a tailpipe sniffer. I'm happy to see this issue behind you, as I know are. I think the 4 turns of the screw were certainly due to injector issues. Great troubleshooting and thanks for another great video. Cheers to both of you!

ah, the view down the hood during the "toodle", the view reminded me of the same view when i had my 76 911S.....

Franny I'm so happy that it was such an easy fix and now you've got a great running Porsche! I absolutely can't wait for your Ferrari 308 videos to come. I learn so much from your videos. Thank you for making them!

I ran into the same issue with my 944. That idle control valve was way off and it was hunting. Glad that you were able to get it all sorted.

Wonderful, persistence pays off! Last video you were actually 95% there. In the end just a basic adjustment. Someone before you had no idea what they were doing and tried the easy way with idle settings. Older car is gonna have older problems but you worked through it. This was fun to watch and I have to say a bit easier than my 12 plug 993. Try one of those. Congratulations!

Yes, we have a 1994/5 993 as well. Beautiful car, but holy cow! 12 plugs and two distributors... When we bought it a few years ago we had the shop replace all the plugs and wires and the belt on the distributor just incase. I bet that is a good afternoon job!

Yes, mine is a ‘95 coupe. Love it...but so hard to work on. It’s all so cramped and hidden. These cars really teach you patience!

I don't even have an air-cooled Porsche. (Air-cooled VWs here) But I was hooked at every moment in the video. My partner and I just found your channel and were loving it. Subscribing after this comment. 🌈❤ 🚗

Congratulations on completing your 'engine out' on the Porsche. I would not say I knew, but I watched all of these and you didn't miss anything while doing the job! It was not going to be something complex. Glad you found it. Have a good weekend. John UK.

Well done, Franny! Great news, but sad if it means the end of this series. Those Colorado skies look beautiful. When I was driving 944s in the UK many years ago there was always a thing in the Porsche community about Porsches running better in cold weather. I never noticed it myself! What next?

Thanks so much! I still have interior work and final detailing and... We will share all the costs as well. Should be interesting (not sure I want to know that...). The Ferrari is up next with full suspension rebuild and interior work. I do want to go into the history on that car a bit as well... Should be fun. The little 356 needs brakes and steering work so maybe mid summer on that? We'll do our best to keep you entertained :)

@@HeidiandFranny You won't be getting bored then! I like your approach and look forward to these upcoming projects. Regarding costs, these cars are flying up in value. I live in Thailand now and even though I will never own another Porsche I keep an eye on UK prices. Good 997's are now more affordable than these old Carreras! Your one is very well sorted mechanically, the body looks to be very sound and there is only some cosmetic work to do inside and out. You've invested a lot, but everything has been done the correct way and I still think you are quids in!
