ALRIGHT! let's do this at 9pm outside in the dark so I can drive to work tomorrow! Yay
That certainly doesn't sound like a good time. Hope you got it all sorted out!
How'd it go?
@@elfpimp1 no problem. Realized I needed a new serpentine belt too
I feel your pain I'm about to do the same
@@tenkkutn That's why I always buy a new belt and replace it any time work involves removing the belt.
Fantastic. He gets right to the point, shows you how, has good side notes, gives sizes, and no fluff. Great video. Thank you!
My 2008 left me stranded last night, thanks for the most helpful video to aid me in removal/replacement.
It's been a year since this came to the aid for people like me. Your kindness has empowered my own ability and not waist money on a project that I can do for myself. Thank you! I'm in a tight spot and your video was perfect. 🎉
Glad I could help!
Always a special shout out to the UA-camrs who do these jobs and make videos. It makes a world of difference
Here's a suggestion...I found it easier to pull off the rubber skirting on the front edge of the front left side fender. It'll give you plenty of room to take the alternator out and put the new one in.
Gonna look at this option since that alternator is kinda hard to remove from that space
Hello Kevin. This is actually the second time that I have needed to replace my alternator since you uploaded the video. Thanks. Fortunately, I had the lifetime Autozone alternator warranty. Since the last one only lasted one year, I told the clerk that I could be coming back 40 more times before I was too old to drive.
I did find out one thing during my two times of replacing the alternator. You do not actually need to remove the skid pan and put the Allen key in there. Once you remove the battery, you can access the idler pulley from the fan blade area. It is necessary to use an extension and position the fan blades so that the extension can be used on the bolt. With the battery removed, there is enough clearance to articulate the pulley enough to remove the belt from the old alternator.
I don't usually comment on these, but your directions were dead on. Straight to the point and easy to follow, swapped out without a hitch. Like earlier commenter I had two extra bolts for a harness but absolutely perfect! Thank you.
Glad you found it helpful! Thanks for watching!
Not only have you helped me with my Subaru issues on my sti but recently I ran into my work truck (Tacoma) alternator failing and I needed a tutorial on how to fix it and here u are again helping me out 😂 couldn’t have asked for a better tutorial 🤝🏽
Great video. Most important part was showing the angle to remove it. Did mine in two hours. Thanks.
The shop was going to charge me 1700 for a new alternator and belt + labor to install it. You my friend have saved me over $1000 in this video plus some other stuff
This is one of the most expertly produced instructional videos I've ever seen.
Thank you so much for this awesome video! I’m 63 years old and never worked on a vehicle in my life. I might’ve swore a bit, but I got her done.
One point I might add is that when you put the new alternator in there is insert at the bottom screw (rear) insert the bolt about five turns first and give it a tap with a hammer because the rear is a sleeve and it was pushed in so the alternator wouldn’t seat until I tapped it out.
Thank you, you just saved a 76 year old DIY , a lot of money. MAHALO.
Dude, just wanted to give a HUGE thank you for this video. Easily saved me some big $$$ on replacing mine. I had 2 extra bolts connecting my harness to the alternator directly, but it was an easy step. Getting the old one out SUUUUUUCKED, but the new one went in like a pinch.
Thanks again bro.
Happy to hear it helped!
Great job man, super simple, and so thankful for telling us the size of the bolts and nuts! Thank you
Just saved myself 150$ for the belt and alternator replacement. Thanks man.
One tip for everyone. You can take off the sway bar mount on the driver's side and get it out easily from the bottom
Can't visualize, need video 😢
Hey it’s Kevin from S…. I also have a 2020 STI and watched a lot of your content… was surprised when I searched 08 Tacoma V6 alternator replacement! Good Stuff!!!
Wow thank you so much, you made it look easy. It took me almost the whole day to change it. Taking the old one out took like 80% of the time. I couldn’t figure out how to get the Allen key to hold the belt, so I just held the wrench with a strap, I wrapped it around the tire. Thanks again
I’ll add to the “thanks man!” Stories lol. My ‘12 TRD Sport had the solid red battery light, indicating alternator issues. Within 2 hours of gathering a new alternator and some help from my dad, this video was super easy to follow. Thanks man!
Changed mine on my 07 Tacoma V6. Worked like a charm. Thanks !!!
Thank you, Sir. Your instruction and guidance is well appreciated.
Watched your video after being quoted $600, plus cost of the alternator or dealer $1200. Took notes and it went very well other than the bottom bolt took an hour to get it out (guess they thought it was holding the motor in) finished perfect. Saved me at least $ 600. Thank you..
Appreciate no bs. Props for being concise and to the point.
Worked like a charm, appreciate the video and the detailed explanation. Watched another video that had you taking the whole front end apart and the guy said that was the easy way. Love the Allen wrench trick, did not even know that was an option. Again, thanks for posting.
Happy to help!
Just had to replace my alternator on my 2010 tacoma. Thanks for the video. Helped out a lot
Thanks for posting this video. Best video out there for this repair. You saved me a bunch of $ on labour! Subscribed.
Bro! My truck was dead in the water and after ruling out the battery and googling a symptom that luckily pointed me to a possibly bad alternator, I went for it. Watched a handful of vids on how to replace and landed on yours when the time came to start cranking. Super easy to follow. Step by step. I’m not a car guy, man. I told my lady to come out for the final reveal. She fired right up. Thanks man. Brilliant job with the video and detailed explanation.
Happy to help! Glad you got the truck up and running again!
Awesome video, job done. Thanks man it was straight to the action with no long winded chat etc.
My taco died at my dad's house thankfully! and we went to the parts store to replace the alternator and battery while we where already at it. And this video made me zoom thru the installation of the new alternator. Thanks for this video! Great job 🙏
You're welcome! Glad it was helpful.
Thank you for this video. Now I have an idea on what to do on my 2008 ex fleet truck Tacoma.
Happy motoring!
Plate C
I could not have done this without your video!! Thank you so much 🙏🏻
Excellent walkthrough, Bro! I'm certain I speak for many others when I say this is a big help!
Thanks for your post. Easy to follow. Very helpful mentioning the socket sizes and torque values.
Bro love the way you did this video, extremely helpful quick and to the point and not 30minutes long like everyone else. Thank you for doing this helped me out big time defiantly will be watching more of your vids
What a fantastic video, incredible job and well documented.
Thank you very much!
I was able to replace the alternator with your video, thanks!
Great Video! Simple-to the point. Very easy to understand and repeat your process. Thanks!
Glad it was helpful!
Thanks for the video. This helped me change my alternator with no issues.
Great to hear!
Great video so thanks for posting. When pulled mine off there wasn’t the 2nd 16mm bolt on the bottom bracket. En route to see if I can acquire one at the local auto parts store. Cheers.
This is a very well made video. Thanks for the help!
Thank you for the great video, couldn’t have done it with out your help. My first time ever changing alternator LOL! It was tough getting it out though, but big mahalo!!
Happy to help! Glad to hear you showed that thing who's boss! 😂
Good video. It guided me through this process to success. Maybe consider doing another one on replacing that seprentine belt, as it's tricky and its not a bad time to replace it when you do the alternator.
Great Vid! Comprehensive and thorough.
Got me through the “f*%k, I don’t wanna do this” stage.
16 years and 309,000 mi, I guess it’s not much to swap the alternator for the first time.
Thanks!
Bruh thank you for this vid! Other than brakes and oil changes I'm not too experienced but thanks to you I successfully replaced my alternator! Every step covered and detailed! Much appreciated! 🤙🏽
Happy to help!
Quick tip for some of y’all, to take it out easier there is some fabric type stuff on the inside of the drivers side wheel well you can take off and you can literally just slide the alternator out through there. It’s especially easy if you already have your skid plate off like this video shows you to. Made my swap easier, hope this helps someone!
Best auto part video I’ve ever seen 👌🏽👌🏽
Thank you for this amazing video! I just got done changing mine out of my 2011 sport model. I did bugger the bottom bolt a bit. But I was able to get it out. And yes, taking that alternator out was more difficult than getting the new one in.
Thank you sir!
Same for me! Thank you soooooo very much!
Fantastic video. You made it look easy and it actually was. Thank you.
Glad it was helpful!
Having never worked on a car to this extent this has been a great video to follow. Ran into some kinks mainly due to being a newb but way to save the day!
Glad I was able to help out! Thanks for watching!
Thank you for this video. Original alternator gave out after 224000 miles. 2011 Tacoma.
Dude ya done good with the vid and nice execution of the removal of the alternator, had a guy claiming to have worked at Toyota and he said best way was to remove the left front tire lol umm yeah right , your way is text book good job
Thanks for the kind words!
Great tutorial, took me about an hour and most of that fighting to get it out after removing the bolts.
Thanks! This made it super easy for me! 10/10 video!
What an awesome video! Thanks man!
Great video, very informative and not a lot of blah blah blah. Highly recommend this video.. Today removed my alternator this am. Hardest part is removing the old alternator from the tight space. Awaiting arrival of the new alternator to parts store. Savin money and I don't mind wrenchin. This 2007 Tacoma has been awesome. This original alternator lasted 17 years. 294k on this truck and runs great.
Glad it helped!
Thank you for this! This made this job super easy
Glad it helped!
Thanks for your video, your instructions were down to the money, make my job much easier. Thank you much.
Great to hear!
Yo! My alternator just failed on me and your video was great!
Great video! Thank you for sharing it with us.
Thanks! Happy to help!
Thanks for your great video tutorial, God bless you and your family.
Thanks a bunch Kevin! My alternator is whining and dead after 155k mi! Gonna start replacement this weekend. Great vid!
Always happy to help!
Great video!,Ran into this project today xD and was wondering how challenging it was going to be, this got me both through and let me know what I was in for, in a fabricator not a mechanic so this was just at my level to be able to do- thanks for the vid man!
Thanks. Doing this in a couple of days on my 06. Appreciate the straightforward video.
Always happy to help!
Getting that alternator out, though...that was less than fun. Everything else went to plan and it's working great
Thanks again for the video.
@@westerbeck70 yeah man I’m sitting here trying to get mine out right now and I’m losing my mind
@@westerbeck70 and it’s on my 06😂
@@hootiecwiek9130 Walk away for a bit. When you come back, make sure that stupid positive battery cable clamp/brace/whatever is removed so you can slide that cable away from the hole. Wish I could tell you exactly how it was oriented when it finally came out but I was too busy doing the happy dance. Just don't be surprised how easy the new one goes in! Good luck.
Thank you! Thank you! Extremely helpful video. Made my DIY job a cake walk.
Glad it helped!
Nice work, buddy. Thanks.
Going to take a shot at this today. My truck left me stranded and I will install the new one today. Happened 2x and got a jump started but now it's just clicking so here goes.
I also had a hell of a time getting my old one out of my 09 V6. Had 2 extra bolts holding the wiring to the side of the alternator that I couldn't see due to grease build-up. I wrestled for over an hour getting that old one out, then putting those tiny bolts back into the bracket on the side of the new one was a royal PITA, one actually broke off even though I wasn't tightening hard. Definitely not as easy as your video but still worth it not to pay big $$$ to have someone do it for me.
Easy fix, thanks brother.
Gracias me sirvió tu vídeo cambie mi alternador ,👍🙏
Good video without any bs. Just noticed my alternator is about to die at 142k miles thanks
Thank you for making this video; I'm waiting for the temperature to rise above 28°F this morning in Colorado before replacement attempt. Interestingly, the noise from a failing alternator closely resembled that of a power steering unit either low on fluid or malfunctioning. weird
Straight and to the point. THANK YOU ............
Happy to help!
Thank you so much for this video! Love it so much!!!
You are so welcome!
As soon as he went to the skid plate is where I decided I’m taking my truck to the shop instead lol
Edit: I’d somehow end up putting the belt back on wrong anyways lol
Great vid saved me a lot of money
Happy to help!
Great video
Thanks!
Awesome video short and straightforward thanks for that Allen key trick and I could see the way you twisted The alternator to slip it through I'm going to use that technique The only problem is it look like an exact fit If I wanted to go with a beefier or alternator for a sound system I'll probably shit out of luck
Glad it was helpful!
The 2007 Tacoma V6, much smoother to take the alternator (R+R ) out from the bottom. First thing turn the steering wheel to the left, There is a small removable access part of the fender well, 4 push in plastic anchors… This can be done without removing the battery and the driver side wheel… do disconnect the battery. And good idea to clean both battery posts and connections. Note: I did try the top side removal method, which BTW was a time consuming and potentially damaging the AC , do not try moving the AC line.
Save yourself the trouble, take it out as described above. Good luck!!!
I just did this yesterday on my 2011, total nightmare. Your alternator came out much easier than mine, I struggled for at least half an hour twisting and turning it every way I could, I even had to move the black and yellow wrapped wiring on the fender to get enough clearance, and putting the new one back in wasn't much better. I almost grabbed a grinder to cut off the extended lip on the oil filter cooler housing. It seems as if my motor is about an 1/8th of an inch closer to the fender than other's I've seen. You can reach the tensioner pulley from the top, which is what I did, but it's a tight fit so in the long run it's probably better to take off the skid plate and do it from the bottom.
Sorry to hear it didn't go as smoothly as planned. Mine certainly took some coaxing to come out, but it wasn't absolutely terrible like yours.
LOVE it!
Thank you sir for this I’m about to replace mine
You're a credit to humanity my man! I hope karma rewards you 10-fold for helping turn a day choir into an hour "project."
Happy to help!
Thank you
Your video is awesome 👌
Video helped me out a ton, thanks, getting the alternator out was a bitch but the rest has been smooth, you’re awesome!
Happy to help!!!
Well, My only 7/32 Hex Wrench went somewhere when it slid off the top of the rad mount. The only other thing is non of these video's are showing where the 2nd Alternator Bolt is located at. I'm stuck doing this Tacoma alone so another set of eyes & hands is well, certainly not here....
Other than that, these Tacoma's with the 4.0 Liter V-6 are not hard to do an Alternator swoop on at all. It's just my first ever Toyota we've had in the family. A 2007 Crew Cab with 206k miles on it was just to hard to pass by. Runs perfectly, (except for the Bad Alternator) lol....
Thank you for posting the video, as it did help out. Even if it was for a couple of the tips & tricks which most guys forget to tell ya about....
I think the second bolt is at the bottom of the alternator. Cause there’s one on top and another at the bottom
@@JCfilmz14 Yes, I waited like 2 hours for the sun to be in a different part of the sky & I could see everything a lot better. There was a lot of little stuff to do but I looked at it this way. This 2007 Tacoma has 226K miles & the alternator is just going bad. They already beat out any US Automaker...
Like he said at the end, make sure you get the right alternator. 130 Amp for the Taco with a tow package, 100 Amp without the tow package.. 😁👍
Bro!!! I was quoted $840 to do this job!!! I am no mechanic!!! I had the alternator swapped, a new belt (last one was fraying) new battery, new air filter and the oil changed in 1hr 40 mins!!! This video saved me over $500 today just for the Alternator change…. I’m assuming I saved about 200-300 more if they would hav head to replace the belt battery, then do the oil and air filter change! You deserve about 1000 likes today alone my friend! THANK YOU.
Maybe you can elaborate on why the “Allen key” was needed??? I just turned mine… popped the belt off , let it replace and when I put the belt on I just opened it back slipped the belt on and let it take tension again. Hope I didn’t screw something up long term by doing that?
Great video thanks bro
No problem 👍
Why is yours so much cleaner and less rusty than mine? On a more serious note this video is a life saver. Thank you.
I thought mine was pretty rusty haha thanks for watching!
@@KevinVo I had to drill a nut off. Fortunately it was a nut that came with the new alternator. The electrical ground or whatever it was. Also I found out that there was an easier way to get the alternator out and the new one back in. Drop it down and towards the driver side wheel.
Satan himself tightened the bottom alternator bolt on my Taco 🥵
That's definitely the worst one!
Same!!
😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭
Great video extremely helpful. My only issue was that there were two screws on the bracket on the alternator. other than that everything was right on.
Thanks!
THANK YOU VERY MUCH !!!
You're welcome!
4:05 There is a hole behind the driver side wheel well where it is easier to take out the alternator.
You don't have to remove the skid plate you can access the tensioner from the top via long ratchet, breaker bar with the 14mm
My dumbass, I tried to loosen the tensioner using your method. Tried for a good minute to lock it in with the Allen key but couldn’t do it . Finally remembered to use my breaker bar and come from the top, ten seconds later the belt was removed. So, if you have a breaker bar, it’s easier to just come from the top. Otherwise it’ll have to be your method. Thanks for the video.
you dont have to remove the skid plate you can release tensin on the belt and do all the removal from above and it will prob take 30 min to replace.
I WISH I found that tensioner holder before I did this!!!!!
I am swapping out alternators -thought mine was bad because the pulley appeared to be seized…. And I blew a serpentine belt. Once I loosened the bottom bolt a bit it (the pulley now spins freely). I am not sure if I should go ahead and replace the alternator or just the belt and tighten the bottom bolt just enough so the pulley still spins. thanks in advance for any insight.
