  • If your brand new car battery died, one of the most common culprits is a bad alternator.
In this video Josh shows you how too quickly and safely remove and replace the alternator and then test it to make sure it's working properly! Every alternator is different but the basic process is the same for most cars.

I appreciate the tip about charging the battery fully before starting the engine with the new alternator installed.

Thanks. I don’t even drive a Toyota but my neighbor does and if I don’t fix it I will never get my jumper cables back lmao! Great video!!

Thanks for this video! Helped me out so much today and made me feel like an expert mechanic. Love the tensioner on this engine compared to others Ive done in the past.

Thanks for the guide through this process. Getting the belt back on was harder than it looked but other than that it went good

Thank you for making this informative video. My 2007 Tacoma 2.7L has the battery light on. I checked the battery using multimeter and it read 12.23V. I started the engine and read it again and it showed 11.89V. There's a significant drop in voltage which makes me think the alternator needs to be replaced. Am I correct making this assumption? Thanks.

Thank you for saving me labor costs! Got 274000 miles out of the first alternator; hope to get that with the one I just put in.
That lower bolt put up a good fight. Breaker bar came in very handy for that (and the tensioner for that matter) since there was NO room for an impact.
Again, thanks for the walk through. That was a pretty productive < hour's investment.

Outstanding video. 13.39V on alternator, original to 2006. Thought it should be more. Don't have a tester, per se, just a voltmeter. Had not checked in a while.
Have been running with the lights on as a rule, never had an alternator light come on the dash. Was starting to crank a little heavy, 3+ yr old battery. Almost didn't get it home just now.
Local parts guy said simply "bad voltage regulator." What stinks is that the old school vehicles used to have more accessible (external?) voltage regulators.
Ordered alternator, belt, battery but we'll see how it charges, loads up the battery once installed. Almost went across town but didn't want to get stuck, willing to wait til tomorrow.
13.39V ... Was wondering if that was a slow drain on an original alternator or if voltage can fail intermittent.

13.39 isn’t the worst, I would say about normal for an original alternator. Many factors can lower the voltage slightly, such as loose or corroded terminals, a tired out battery, or low idle rpm. But I think your plan to replace both alternator and battery at the same time is a solid one. If you’re curious tho, replace the battery first then check voltage on the old alternator

Will bad alternator cause issue where occasionally turn key and just get a click, then turn several more times and it starts, sluggish turnover at first. Light whining sound that matches rpms from engine area too.

Liked and subscribed. Great video. 330,000 plus miles on my 2012 and getting a battery light on the dash. Going to run the test and see if it's battery or alternator and proceed.

How many miles on this Tacoma? Seems fairly new for the alternator to have failed already.

Aloha Budget Mechanic, while away on a few week vacation what is the best way to avoid the car battery from dying and the engine not turning over after returning from vacation? Unfortunately I don't have someone to start the car now and then.

A few weeks is probably fine. The battery will dip in voltage a little bit but shouldn’t be enough to effect startup. If longer than a month, you’ll want to put a trickle charger on the battery which keeps it topped up.

I had my 2000 Corolla alternator and serpentine belt replaced after 294K miles. I just paid a mechanic to do it since I will never have it done again and they are in practice on an easy but hard job...
