Never understood people who find the Sire preamp too difficult, it has a passive tone control so just switch it off entirely and have a regular J bass. The mid sweep is also centred at a sensible frequency so you can treat it like a regular 3 band active bass if preferred.
Exactly! I pulled the trigger & I'll have my sire v3 gen2 5er in 3 more days I'll have it. & I have already learned the pre. I'm not going to change the strings either. gonna hit the ground running. Its has a lot of work to do. It will make many bob their heads, stomp their feet and shake their asses!
@@MegaTerryNutkins that is no lie just bought a black one and any tone you want you can get but you have to learn that powerful pre amp it’s awesome sounding
I loved this vid cuz my new Sire P10 arrived last week and I appreciate Johnny’s insights. He’s a bass guru and seeing him geek out a bit on Sire did me so proud. Love me some Johnny!!
They make a V5 which is a passive bass with seventies pick up spacing. I think it sounds better than V7 in my opinion. Anyway I always enjoy your videos.✊🏿
I just stumbled upon this channel looking for info and pointers as an "older" beginner. Bruh! You got me rollin' and captured with info all at once! 🤣 I bought the V7 4 string and love it! Thanks for the tips!
Interesting approach. Simplifying the Sire control system. I bought a 4 string V7 For it's simplicity ... My main is a Modulus Q5 (EMGs). My baby since '96 ❤ After letting my Wal go I felt the need for some 4 string backup. MIM Precision and a Sire Jazz filled that requirement. Just for some more 'traditional 'tones 😉
Totally agree on stringing through the body; when I had my blue Roscoe Beck V, I strung through the body, and just found that the angle the string came through that bridge and over the saddle was just far too extreme. It can help if your only string choice is slightly too long, but strings shouldn't be hitting the bridge saddle at a 90 degree angle in my opinion, its just too much. What would be interesting to hear is to have a small ledge routed into the back of the body (like the neck mounting screws on a Yamaha Attitude), and have the string ferrules set in there, so the strings were run through the body at a 45 degree angle, and see what that would do for the sound.
Lobster made some modifications on Sire basses he demoed. Sire basses ( some ) are designed, like the modifications and sound of this bass excellent 👌. Some pre- amps maybe to large for cavities of Sire basses.
I love all your videos; this one seems to be a little risky . This bass has a lot of fans. A lot of people really like this preamp. I still love your videos.
I think that bass was just fine the way it was. That's why it's made with active/passive switch for more flexibility rather than running active all the time. That preamp change didn't make the controls simpler at all. My thoughts....
I agree with you. I have 2 Sire basses and wouldn't dream of swapping the Heritage 3 preamp without first learning it. The modifications here were not impressive to me. This bass sounds so harsh (not warm and full at all) with the mods made here. Just my opinion.
I like passive best; in my opinion you get a much better tone out of a passive bass with pre-amps, and pre amp pedals than you get with an active bass. Just my opinion of course. Phil Jones is my favorite. I have 2 Phil Jones amps, and I absolutely love them with the 5 inch speakers. I used to have a V7, but it was stolen. I personally thought the pre was a bit much.
Another cool video man 👍. I’ve owned 1st and 2nd generation V7 5’s and have found the low B to lackluster, not to mention I like to string thru the top and the bridge is pita to get the b string thru. Now I have a V7 vintage 4 in ash, I’ll run passive into a Sadowsky preamp pedal, great tone, I think the pickups sound better than thru the onboard pre. IMHO. ✌️
Maybe the youngsters aught to choose a SIRE with less range in the Electronics (simpler electronics). Miller-ites, we love it the way it comes from the factory 🏋️
He Johnny, just a suggestion. It would be helpful if you added links to your vids on the parts used that you modded these basses with? Just a suggestion ;-)
Johnny I have this Bass but I don’t like the plastic control knobs,Sire don’t sell the chrome knobs anymore????They recommend not changing them as damage to the preamp. I had already ordered some from another source but now I’m scared thinking about letting a guitar tech do it? I respect your opinion if you would?
I fitted metal knobs on mine, cheap push fits from eBay for the main pots and EMG for the dual concentric pots. The EMG knobs are slimmer than the stock plastic ones which makes it easier to adjust those controls mid gig.
@@XXXSuperBass I was referring to his invaluable set ups That make basses play effortlessly... I have been playing 40 yrs. And have many basses I know modifying them usually don't add value but in some cases it does...
Glad to see you liked the bass itself, you seemed to be enjoying playing it. Question, what was the quality of components in the original preamp? All I see is wires!
Shadakaka! It seems like you can make just about any bass sound great. I have been considering getting a 5 string bass. I'm not really sure I can justify getting one. I really love my 4 string fretless and I'm not really sure that I would find myself reaching for a 5 string over my 4 string fretless because it just sounds so perfect to me. I'm lost! Lol
If I owned one I'd be tempted to reshape the tip of the headstock to make it rounder, then revarnish etc to match. It's not a boutique instrument therefore not a high value decision :)
SIRE V7 SERIES1 WHAT THE BIGGEST WASTE OF MONEY I'VE EVER SPENT ON ANY BASS I EVER BOUGHT !! I haven't played mine for years because you can only play it in passive mode because the BASS POT IS COMPLETELY STRIPED, And where it stuck has the Bass overwhelming. Thinking that this CRAP was under warranty and that maybe they would replace this defective part...NOPE ,you have to pay MORE MONEY for a new Preamp. I also own an M3 ,which surprisingly feels, sounds, and plays BETTER than the V7 and only spent $250 out the door at my local Pawn Shop for it. I wish i Had found it first....
Maybe you can add the Johnny Lee Long signature to the Sire Bass Line; AMG does this with Mercedes Benz, Brabus does this with Mustang, Abarth does this with FIAT, SRT does this with Dodge, TRD does this with Toyota...........it ain't some far fetched idea. GO TRY TO DO THIS MAN🎸

Yes you are right Michael they have a V5 passive and it plays nice, so Johnny he did build a bass for young people to play Thunder Thumbs Production.
I have found stretching new strings a few times before tuning to be very helpful in maintaining pitch.
