Mr. Long, you are a colorful character and I say that respectfully. At 59 years old I finally decided to get serious about playing my bass. Must be because I'm a 2X prostate cancer survivor and I'm still here during this global pandemic. I will be tuning in often with you. Your Bass and color is killer Boss and to top it all off your a killer Bass player. Peace and Blessings.
Thanks Johnny for the video. Great points that don’t get put out there very often. I love the the beginner lessons too. I struggle with the thump and pluck. I guess practice practice practice! God bless!✌️😎🎸
John, you are spot on! i wanted to add ..for me ..i always keep my fingers clipped close..i hate to feel or hear the nails against the strings..i always slap on the bottom of the fretboard..why..because that where all the older cats that slap did it..i am of the school of'' if it ain't broke don't fix it'! Keep teaching John..i am always learning!!
Best advise on Pot & Slap I’ve heard. I don’t play that type of music so never really needed it, but wanted to learn. I could not get it. No one ever corrected me that I didn’t have to somehow hit the string with my thumb up against the fret board. The way you taught it makes sense and I can do it. It’s a little harder with a MM Stingray-5 because of the tight string spacing, but I’ll work on it. Thanks.
This is a amazing video and it is so true to have your instrument set up properly by the right repair person Less work on your hands and you can expand your playing with comfortability
hype876 nope, if you have a bolt-on bass then it’s the bolts that keeps the neck connected to the body.. don’t be scared adjusting the rod, I was scared too.. just adjust it little by little until you got the string height that you wanted.
Another Grrr8 video mr. Long!!! Can you share exactly what strings and gage are in that p bass pls!... it sounded the perfect tension. I have gone through tonz of strings on my basses trying to get that tight but lose slap/pop sound I hear on the G. Thank you Sir Blessings, -MT
The sound you're getting by playing around the 12:05 - 12:23 mark reminds me of the opening to the William Tell Overture (aka The Lone Ranger Theme Song).
Johnny you the man, clothes, basses, and personality and playin the hell out of Fender P thanks for the tips. I'm an old school classic hard rock player who is coming up to 60 years old and i figured it was time to start slapping. I love Sly and the Family Stone and i loved it when Larry who i think pretty much invented slapping, if i am correct. Lotta guys came after him. Larry said he got that when him and his guitar playing brother would play with him, just the 2 of them and he was making that sound to be percussive to fill in for drums with the bass sound.
THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU! As a 45 Year Funkster, I Literally HATE when people say SLAPPING! You are NOT using an Open Hand to Thump! Slapping is TOTALLY Different from Thumping and Plucking, ANY Funkster will tell you the Same.
I watch and listen to Mr.Long as if I got a free education in Harvard,Yale, and Oxford three times over.He dispels the myths and makes it real, without hype and nonsense...
I've been told the callus thing before as well. Someone told me that when I play more my hands will get stronger and my finger tips will start to callus. But overtime I noticed thats just depending on how the player plays as well as the gauge of string that they may use.
@@bassist718 Shoot, guitar strings are thinner than bass strings and those gave me callus (on my fretting hand) as soon as I started playing consistently, I can only imagine bass strings!
Great video Johnny! I have a Question Mr Shadakaka! For some reason when I'm playing my First string (G) it falls out of the fret board as if I was pulling down too hard but I feel that I'm not...idk your thoughts Sir?
Mr. Long I am a female Bassist, I want to buy a Antigua Bass, but cannot find the one with the light colour pick ups and thumb guard, most if them have the Black pick ups and the Black thumb guard, where can I find one. Please Help! Thank You in Advance.
Very good video that gives an intuitive feel for integrating set up (low) attack (easy, light, smooth) and exercise of movement. Already able to put these together quite easy with your approach being one with the instrument. Kind of like easy talking back and forth with the bass/hands/head becoming one smooth, easy communication- hard to explain, but you showed it here. Thanks!
I would love to find someone with your mindset to show me the bass. It's too common for people to make so many things so damn difficult, when it should be fun..
Hi Mr. Long, just finished watching your video , thumping & popping ,well done sir. If you've ever watched the late Willie Dixon , Joe Zinkan , they slap the finger board of the upright bass & some how as time moved forward, thumping became slapping , which is totally incorrect, Larry & Louis thump the bass. When you have time sir, youtube ( whispering / Joe Zinkan ) it shows the two are different ,he slaps the finger board. Blessings Sir.
Good morning Johnny Lee Long,HOPE your Family's doing well, it's always good to go back to the Basics, ESPECIALLY the BIBLE, BEEN Married 30 yrs.,after oil changes always use goop, and liquid soap,so she won't get CANCER down at the happy zone, heard what I said, I said the HAPPY ZONE😂😂❤,have a great day

I mean in a positive way ignorant, because you don't know what you think you know about the bass. It's a lot of learning so I can feel Johnny Long, I ain't no expert at thumping either just learning each day, this coronavirus got the whole world shocked up it's a lesson to be learned.

Pray to JesusChrist for permanent healing. Pumpkin seeds, pomegranate juice, and do not cook in any oil.😊
I think I needed this talk! Not that I'm out there heavy thumping and beating the snot out my bass but it's a great piece of technical advice. ✌🏿✌🏿✌🏿
Now I am dreaming of that p bass, man!! Absolutely stunning looks and sounds!
That color is beautiful thanks for sharing so many awesome basses with us, and cool tid bits too ☺
Thank you Johnny once again. Great lesson . Great perspective . Love ya brother. Keep it up We need you. ! God Bless !

I absolutely LOVE the Antigua basses! Always wanted a Jazz but that P is off da shelf!!! Much love, Johnny!
I really enjoy your videos Johnny, not only for the info but your whole attitude! Your smiles makes me a happy guy.

Thanks for the teaching Mr long you helped me a lot I just RETIRED! AND playing my bass again
Thank you for the awesome break down and keeping it fun.
Great advice & BEATIFUL instrument 🎸

JL . . you are the best Bass teacher alive today.
That color is beautiful thanks for sharing so many awesome basses with us. 😊
I call that bass the Robin Duhe Bass. The original bass player of Frankie Beverly and Maze. He played it at the 81 concert in New Orleans.
Now Bro. Johnny Lee, please show us how you set up your bass strings and action thoroughly. How low can you go?
I would like a video on setting low action as well. I have an idea of how to do it myself but I am afraid I might pop my neck turning the trus rod.
hype876 you can never pop a neck, you can only worn out the truss rod nut
ANG WEIRDO and the rod is basically what keeps the neck connected to the body ?

man, your vids bring me happiness and learning every time, much love
Pretty bass and good info. Thanks.
You're the best Johnny! Thank you for the lesson! Question do you still get China basses? If so who do you buy from?
Johnny, your thumb-to-palm exercise is brilliant, uses the senses to help the motor cortex learn.
I like your lessons, more please!
My brother I learned from Dave too, his slap style and technique is so clean , he played with Termite,VA

Should practicing thumping and plucking be done on a four string?

This vid helps a lot. Awesome energy, Johnny Long!!

What strings are you using in with Gage? Are they?
What’s the best pickups for a precision bass. And do I need a preamp

Hey Johnny! What color scheme is that called? I have to get one like it! Enjoyed the video brother!
Right Johnny.. A lot of Players have their Bass setup wit the strings too high for effective fast Thumping..
That bass color looks similar to that silverburst troy sanders, looks dope!
Thanks for the lesson.

It's the same for drummers. It's all about economy of motion much like martial artists...
I've been playing my whole life, my hands are soft to the touch, but there's definitely calluses underneath.
I heard Hootie pluck his Alembic with his beak...that boy bad AF.
I no.hes a straight beast...quite as it's kept
Antigua sweetness !

Good Morning 🙂
Thumping & popping works for me. LOL
I like that color.
The word slap came from some movie with some white guy saying, "I be slapping da bass" and the white bass players are trying to make that word law.
I play UPRIGHT, SO.....
