I watched out of order and saw part 2 before 1. So here, you have oil coming: is it out of the valve cover/cylinder head junction or the cylinder head/engine block? If it's the latter, well it's bad news. Head gasket has failed and oil is escaping outward. Edit: someone else mentioned it's the valve cover, so that's a good news. As for the white smoke, if it persists after warm-up (could be just a big of condensation being burned when starting during warm-up), it's likely coolant being burnt. This point to a head gasket, though first I'd check if coolant level is dropping and if you have exhaust gases in the coolant. Also a super-clean piston head would be a confirmation that the head gasket as failed, you need to check that with a borescope. As usual, I'm not a trained mechanic, so take that with a grain of salt! I might be entirely wrong there. Awaiting for part 3, now having watched part 2, I'm not so sure just changing the spark plugs would solve the issue.
Hi Mark. This engines have manually valve adjustment. So first step will be to check valve clearance. And this can be tricky as you have camshaft with groove and without the groove between if i remember 3rd and 4th lobe. Renault have the 1st piston on the gearbox side. Clearance is not the same for these 2 so.. One camshaft is for 16 valves. You need to adjust them every 60-70.000km. Another thing can be burnt valve but not likely. How much oil did you drain in that container?
Thank you for that. So it's the same as Peugeot, No 1 at flywheel just to be awkward lol. Do you think a spring may have snapped and it's bouncing up on the piston crown? The oil should have been around the correct amount as it was topped up but they did run it down just below dipstick prior to me owning the car.
@@CoatsandGaiters This oil leak under exhaust manifold is normal for d4f. Leak is from the valve cover gasket. It is good to have some sealant on gasket becaose engine is tilted back. Probably it is not a broken valve spring, sounds like bad valve clearance as this engines when everything is normal works little louder in idle. Something like diesel. Remove the valve cover and take a look. Maybe leak down test before removal if you have one.
Thank you for all this information. Be amazing if it is just valve clearances. I will do a compression and leak down test when I get chance. Bit on at the mo@@mr.t2585
My first thought (guess) was a spun conrod bearing but I just don't know now as the sound seems loudest near the right engine mount. I will be doing a compression and leak down test before removing the rocker cover. @@patrickjmorgan
Interesting video Mark! These are the ones that make you stand out from the others, who else gets a stethoscope with a microphone just for us viewers? I very much appreciate it. As for the smoke, yea that's smokey for a petrol engine in my opinion
Thank you Lucas. I did buy it second hand off ebay but wasn't cheap. As soon as I knew the Dacia was coming my way I was searching ebay for a solution that I could record the audio with. I normally buy and sell my tools regular as I often only use them once for a video and then don't need them again. There is some blue in that exhaust isn't there.
I think for what it's worth you need to remove the sump and rocker cover, check the big ends and have a visual check of everything up top as well. That sound is very strange, it sounds too heavy for top end but too light and rattly (rather than a heavy knock) to be bottom end 🤔
I know exactly what you mean Sammy. It's a loud knock when you stand near it but the stethoscope didn't seem to be loud at the bottom of the engine but was at the top near the engine mount. I will definitely be removing the rocker cover soon. Might do compression check and leak down first.

It's certainly a mystery that hopefully will be solved very soon. I think they are fairly reliable engines being so basic. Easy to work on.

Knock engine or camshaft speed, Mark. ? Does sound like a Conrod to me. But mines a guess.

My guess. Timing tensioner failed, and the oil leak is a red herring. Next move boroscope in the cylinders and a compression test 😢
That would be great if it were. I was thinking of compression check to see if the valve was loose on a broken spring.
What's the latest with the Dacia?
Been doing a compression test this week. Editing video
Bad camshaft. Has it been run low on oil?
I think it had been run low on oil
Hmmm, looking forward to part 2@@CoatsandGaiters
Did you find the root cause to this? I have the same issue
I’m back on it soon. Had to cover a couple of weeks of HGV
