- Hi, I'm Lyra. I'm glad you found me.
I am excited to share with you my 2-year violin progress as an adult beginner. I largely self-taught the first year and found my lovely teacher on my 1-year anniversary.
Learning the violin as an adult can be a challenging but rewarding journey. I started my violin journey two years ago, and I want to document and celebrate the progress I have made so far.
Throughout this video, you will witness the milestones and improvements I have achieved through consistent practice. From the first awkward bow hold to playing more complex pieces, I have come a long way.
As an adult beginner, I understand the struggles and doubts that can arise when embarking on this musical adventure. Therefore, I want to inspire and encourage others who might be considering learning the violin as an adult. It's never too late to pursue your passion and unlock your hidden talents.
Whether you are an adult beginner yourself, a fellow violin enthusiast, or simply curious about the violin learning process, this video is for you. Join me on this journey as I reflect on my progress and showcase the improvements I have achieved over the past two years.
If you have any questions or want to share your own experiences as an adult beginner, please leave a comment below. Don't forget to like and subscribe for more videos on my violin journey and other exciting violin-related content.
Thank you for watching, and let's celebrate the progress of adult beginners in learning the violin together!

I just finished my 30-day Bach challenge where I learn the Partita in d minor allemande. You can find these practice shorts on the 30-day bach playlist.

I started learning the violin at age 52 (15 years ago), for the same reasons you did. I absolutely love it! I am not as brave as you to be able to play on stage with only an accompanist. I joined an orchestra and am now playing in 3 local orchestras plus a local chamber group. I am not brave, I do not play well, but I am enjoying it, learning a new instrument and i absolutely applaud you!!!❤
Thank you! I'm so glad you are enjoying your violin playing journey. I want to play in an orchestra so so badly but it feels so scary 😅
@@lyra_hou a lot less scary than solo. That thought terrifies me, lol. None of the orchestras I play in required auditions. Keep enjoying your playing and study. Its hard but totally worth it.
Wow that’s amazing!!
Sir you... Are a legend
I'm age 66.5 and although I did take piano lessons at age 4 my teacher said recital, I ran. Age 11 I took up the flute as a default choice as the school only had band instruments. In 7th grade they had strings. By that time I already had a year of flute in school with a rental half paid off. My personal desire would have been the violin. So I'm having my first interview with a possible music school in town. Yes, nervous but very excited to finally find out what it is that has drawn me to this instrument. Brought up in a chaotic family environment and being an empath it has always been hard to think about anything I wanted to do would amount to anything. But this time is for me and eventually to increase my faith and inspire others to overcome their difficulties and disabilities to be able to be free from all the "nay sayers" in life.
As a Suzuki trained violin teacher, this is really, really wonderful. Even when you were self-taught (which is obviously the last thing any teacher wants to hear) you've got good posture, all the bowings, using 4th fingers as you should - your disclaimer was not necessary. This is fantastic!
Thank you so much! Coming from a teacher this means a lot.☺️
it's actually very motivating as someone who is just starting to play and feeling like a stupid for not learning as fast as young prodigies, thanks for the video, I hope it becomes viral
Thank you! We can't all be linglings haha. Talent is out of our control but learning and practicing is a choice. I get frustrated too when I'm not making progress as fast as other people. So I have to keep reminding myself that the journey is uniquely mine and therefore the only benchmark that matters is how I improved over time. It's hard I know. Those prodigies are just so good!
I am a 34-year-old dude who has been playing for 3 months now. Thank you for sharing your journey. It has helped me.
Yay! I’m so glad you enjoyed it. Happy practicing 😊
As a professional violinist and teacher, I am very impressed with the amount of progress you made in such a short time!! And it’s amazing how well you did in the first year without a teacher. Please do not be in a big hurry to always be learning more technically difficult pieces. Be really picky with your intonation and developing a beautiful tone. Bravo!! Please keep us updated on your progress.
PS : the nervous shaky bow will go away the more you perform, and for those who never overcome it- there is always a small dose of Inderal(5mg) prescribed by your doctor.
Thank you! You are so right about intonation and tone quality, though the latter is a little elusive. I have a clear idea of what I want to sound like but I'm not quite sure how to produce it mechanically. When I do produce a good sound that I like, it's usually by intuition or, let's be honest, by accident 😅 any advice on this?
@@lyra_hou Practice is your best friend!
😮
@@lyra_hou I also play the violin in adulthood. There are various exercises to develop hearing and a sense of good sound. For example, you can listen to a certain clear note in your headphones all day and get used to hearing the correct intonation. You can also repeat the game after another violinist (or a high-quality recording) by ear - this really helps a lot. And of course, record yourself and listen to your recordings. An even more useful way is to take solfeggio lessons.
Wow! Thanks for the "big secret" no one knows about. "Be picky with intonation and bowing!" Wow! I am blown away! Now I can become the greatest violinist of all time. I wish someone had told me this earlier, so I would not have wasted 10 years of learning and still suck big time.
I gotta say, even if you didn't mention when you got a teacher, I think it's pretty clear. You made so so much more progress in the second year than in the first and a lot of your fundamentals look so much better in the first video after, with the Bach Bourree
Thank you 😊 I adore my teacher. She is so helpful and encouraging.
Thank you so much for this!! Playing badly on the violin is the ONLY way to journey toward playing good!
Thank you and agreed! Just gotta keep chugging along ~
I Took back my violin with the age of 15, and I hope I can be a professional violonist one day! 🥲 This video have motivated me to keep going and stop thinking what other could think about me. Thanks you❤❤
Yes keep going! Play for yourself 😊
Your recital was incredible! Yes I know it was far from perfect, but as someone who started playing a few years ago myself, as an adult, I know how hard it is to play the violin. There's no way I could begin to play that piece and the fact that you played this in a recital is wonderful. Great job. Keep at it, you will be amazing.
Thank you so much 😊 I hope that you are enjoying your journey as much as I have been mine.
I've been playing for over 2 years and I would still say I'm a lot worse than you. You should DEFINITLY not think you're bad because your great at this and you should definitely keep on going!
Thank you 😊 the struggle is so real though. I hope you are enjoying it so far!
I picked up the violin at 32 years old 2 years and 1 month ago and you are playing far more complex pieces and techniques than I am. Thank you for sharing your journey with the world and reminding us that everyone is a beginner at one point and that it’s never too late to start. You are awesome and play fantastically!
Thank you 😊 “everyone was a beginner once” I shall keep this in mind. Thou art very wise my friend 😉
It's amazing to see so many people sharing a similar journey! I first picked up the violin when I was 18 and taught myself for about a year and busked to be able to afford lessons. I loved the journey so much that I ended up taking a bachelor's degree in classic violin and it's my livelihood now! I'll be following your journey and hope it leads somewhere that fills your life with pride and beauty as it did mine
Oh that’s amazing!! Thank you for the encouragement ~
What did u play during ur busk @goncalomartins3571
@@user-zr6ep7sd2n mostly pachelbel's Canon, Rieding's concerto in b minor and "My heart will go on" and some small piece i knew back then which I don't remember now
You totally practiced that bow dexterity😳 I’m loving how much you worked on the basics motions that most people try to skip because of impatience. This is awesome and motivates me to be more methodical in my own practices👏👏👏
Thank you 😊 I think this is largely due to my experiences with other classical art forms such as ballet, piano, and opera. It’s drilled into me that if you neglected fundamentals they will come back to haunt you for all eternity 🫣
Hello, fellow beginner! I am also have been trying to learn the violin for two years. And i like watching these kinds of progress videos, have my practice sessions recorded, just don't have that courage (yet) to share mine. Great progress and let's enjoy the journey 😊
Hi there~ I’m glad you found my video. I hope it was encouraging in some ways. And yes. Enjoying the journey is the most important part!
Learning keyboard and finger drumming at age 43. After playing bass for 25 years it is so cool to have these little beginner successes again. Keep going!
Thank you! I'm so glad you are keeping music in your life. Gotta celebrate the small wins~
this is my 4th year playing violin and i love violin so much i practice a lot every day but your bowing is actually much better than mine. that is some serious dedication and i respect you a lot for that!
Thank you so much. It's very impressive that you are committed to practicing everyday.
@@lyra_hou thanks! but still you are amazing! i did not learn how to shift that well after 2 years of playing
Hi!
I’m 53 and bought my first violin yesterday. I don’t believe I ever have played on one before either. Not that I can remember.
I loved your concert piece. May I have the insight and the guts like you do!
The only way is up and those who practice will get better.
Thanks for your inspiration!
I hope you enjoy playing! I’m revisiting the concerto after a year and it’s still a struggle 😅
Thank youuuu for showing your progress. I have been wanting to learn how to play the violin since I was in my early 20s. I am now 38 years old. I was classically trained in the piano from age 4 to 12. My mom recently passed away and she was the one who encouraged me to play the piano since I was a child. Now that I'm older I want to pursue violin. This video helped with making that decision. What a beautiful progress.
Thank you for your kind words and for sharing your story. I hope that you give violin a try and it would perhaps be a way to keep the memories of your mother’s encouragement alive 😊
I can identify completely. I picked up the fiddle at the age of 55 and am largely self-taught also. I also am NOT giving up. I had my first duet (fiddle/concertina) at a small concert last Saturday (about 80 in the very friendly and receptive listeners in the audience). Not note perfect, but I would say it went well. Somehow my violin always sounds BETTER under my ear than in a recording....funny! We performed three Swedish folk tunes (I'm Italian!). There's something about the harmonies in that music. Thanks for sharing.
Your solo made me cry. Maybe you think the imperfections take away from your music, just like I do when I play. Listening to your solo made me realize the layer of beauty mistakes add to our music. We’re not hitting every note like a robot, it doesn’t sound like a professional recording. It sounds like sincerity, like anxiety and perseverance. I really appreciate you for sharing this :)
Awwww thank you so much for your kind words. You made me cry 🥹 it takes a lot to truly convince ourselves that we do it for the love of music and the craft, not for perfection. I appreciate your thoughts ☺️
This is SO inspirational!!! You sound AMAZING! I’m literally so motivated after watching this. Thank you so much for sharing this video ❤
Thank you so much! Now go practice! 😉
I start learning play violin a month ago, until now I play one song badly, and I am 55 years old, and I have 11 months to go to be the best violin players in the World.
Never give up, Keep inspiration too too high.
That my target and I will achieve it.🌷
Good luck and keep playing 😊
Thank you for sharing your journey with us! 💐 I look forward to seeing amazing things from you in the future.
Thank you! I've got things cooking. Stay tuned!
I really enjoy the video, this kind of videos always keep me motivated to keep practicing. Thank you for sharing!
Thank you! I'm glad you found it helpful. I'll keep posting more videos so in the future when you need a little company, come back~
How you played on day 18 was literally me after a year 😭😭 you improved really quickly!!
Haha 😊thank you. I hope you are still enjoying playing ~
Love the improvement!! You should be proud, keep going!!
Thank you so much😊
You’ve come very far in such a short amount of time, amazing work!!
Thank you so much!☺️
Amazing work 👏🏼 👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼 keep it up. Looking forward to seeing more updates
Thank you😊 more is coming!
Nice work. It's awesome to see past the veil into how musicians actually work. Most people don't understand that musicianship is mostly just hours of intense hard work.
Definitely. Hard work and a lot of hours. I cut out many many moments of me staring into the void in frustration and despair hahaha
"just"?
Hard work is definitely not everything but I think it’s the most important element at the beginning. As we progress, artistry, musicality, style, interpretation, spontaneity, individuality, and so much more would be just as important.
@@lyra_hou The difference here is that you "think" while I "know."
Coming from a cello student, it's so amazing to see your progress over just a 2 year period! Although I don't play the violin, I feel like both instruments share many similar qualities, and I'm so impressed you harnessed so many techniques such as trilling, chords, sound clarity, and so much more. Continue to strive and please post another progress update soon!
Just to leave off with a couple of my personal tips I've learned throughout my 11 years playing a string instrument...
Don't let tension in the bow arm influence your fingers in the left hand--keep both separate mentally and relaxed!
Strive for a richer and deep sound by controlling bow pressure and bow length!
Yes cellists! I tried playing with my friend's cello and got blisters on my finger tips 😱
And thank you so much for the tips. Would you recommend that I practice the bowing and the notes separately?
I’m a violinist and my husband was a professional. I see great potential in you as a violinist. Your position is quite good. You made tremendous progress in the short time you’ve played. Your journey on the violin is sure to inspire others. I applaud you for being so brave.
Thank you so much! Yay musician power couple!!
❤ u r doing great. I am also learning. Keep steady and going.
Thank you 😊 and welcome to the adult beginner gang ~ what are you working on now, assuming you are learning the violin as well?
This is so funny, in a good way. I applaud your courage, and there is definitely progress.
Thank you~ If I try to learn the violin AND take myself too seriously, I might just lose my mind 😅
Awesome job!! Im learning the violin as well and have been playing for just a year and a half now. I plan to post a progress video soon. So amazing to see your progress.❤
Oh yes please! What are you working on now?
No one in my family had any lean towards any music instrument, i, 19 yrs , was rather demotivated seeing all violin prodigies playing from young age, thinking i wouldn't be able to learn. Your journey has been a great support, getting my first violin. ❤
Thank you for sharing your thoughts. We don’t need to be prodigies to enjoy making music. I hope your first violin serves you well. 😊 happy playing!
Wonderful! You are keeping it real. It is a hard instrument to play and you showed great advancement and you played a challenging piece. Well done🎉
Thank you so much! I've promised myself that in my next life I'll pick the triangle.😅
You did wonderful and I am so proud of you
Awwww thank you so much!
I started learning violin at age 65. Four years later, I'm still at it. I constantly wonder why I'm putting. myself through the pain and frustration of trying to make beautiful sounds that are in tune! But then I come home from work and feel compelled to play and practice and I. try to keep my eye on the bigger picture. "If I quit I'll never will know what I could have sounded like in 5 years, 10 years..." So I won't quit. I love this instrument and the process, But the one thing I haven't done is venture into playing publicly. I can't tell you enough how much I appreciate your courage in making your journey public. I think I'm going to have a new mantra. "Play like Lyra". My goal is that when I retire from my day job, I'll be good enough at my violin to play in a small chamber group. Perhaps you'll join me?
Hi Michelle, thank you so much for your kind words. I’m so glad my video found you! I understand the frustration. I feel it just about every other day. But what keeps me going is that I don’t know to wonder, at the end of my life, how good I could have gotten if I tried. I want to know for certain.
Playing with other people is so much fun! I’ve only had a little experience with it but i find it to be very enjoyable. I hope you find your tribe and make music with them together. Who knows? Maybe I’ll be one of them! 😉
Wonderful! I'm also a violin beginner learner and your improvement is a total inspiration for me to keep practicing. It is very common to feel disappointed when I hear myself playing because it doesn't sound as clear and toned as I would like, even though I know is a process. I'll keep practicing :). Thank you very much for sharing, keep going you're doing great!!
Hi fellow beginner! yes let’s keep practicing. ☺️
Amazing work, especially for being self-taught so long! I've had many violin students, and I've always felt that adults learn faster, contrary to popular wisdom. The problem is, they are always way too self-critical, and they quit! Your humble mindset is the reason you have succeeded, and will continue to succeed. Keep at it, there is so much amazing music ahead of you.
Thank you so much! I think as adults we have grown used to being somewhat good at things. But learning a string is very humbling. You quickly realize that huh… I sound no better than my 5 year old nephew 😅
@@lyra_hou That's exactly correct. By the time you are an adult, you are good enough at everything you need to survive, and anything you are bad at you simply stop doing. We have to force ourselves to learn new things, or we will live in a box!
Actually very inspirational! You obviously have a very good ear and I hope you continue to do videos, especially of full songs which you master. I'm subscribing and hope to see more.
Thank you for the support. I've been thinking about new video ideas. Perhaps a little progress video on the Bach partita I've been working on? Definitely open to suggestions!
WOWWWW THAT’S SOOO IMPRESSIVE!! ⭐️ you are so talented! Keep going 🤍🤍
Thank you so much 😊
🎻💜 B R A V O my dear…. B R A V O!!! I felt so many pleasant emotions while enjoying this video. I was rooting for you at the recital! I love that you challenged yourself, rose to the occasion, put yourself out there, looked fear in the face and gave it the middle fanga 😊! This was so inspiring to watch (and funny, in a good way…loved the hilarious thought 💭 bubbles). The Suzuki songs brought back so many memories of my learning to play viola days. I now find more joy in tinkering around on instruments that aren’t held/played so close to my ears, lol! Thank you for sharing inspiration to continue exploring and having fun with our creativity 💜🎻
Thank you so much 😊 I'm glad you enjoyed the video. Your words put a big smile on my face. Happy tinkering!
Hi! I have to say that this video is very inspiring! Also I wish you the best of luck for your future!
Thank you so much!
Learning violin takes lifetime, and You are doing wonderful, keep it up! Cheers!
Thank you so much for the encouragement ☺️
Congrats on the progress!! Nailing any shifts at all is a big accomplishment. I’m sure learning vibrato is next on your list.
I’m always my biggest critic when it comes to recordings. There’s so much work behind the scenes that goes into the final performance, so a little mistake can feel like a bigger failure than it actually is. Kudos for sharing your progress, and I hope you keep it up.
Thank you. Yes vibrato is in the works. And boy is my left wrist tense! I personally find recording my playing very helpful, that is, after getting over the initial dismay of ‘oh that sounds horrendous’ 😂
Your playing is great. You should proud of your progression. Its amazing. Keep up your playing. Don't let anyone or yourself feel like your not doing great on your journey..❤
Thank you so much for the encouragement!
You’re doing great!! Keep going!!
Thank you! I’m learning Liebesleid now. It’s so challenging in a completely different way from Bach…
Congratulations for being brave! Congratulations for sharing something you may not see as perfect, but it was something you dedicated a lot to accomplish! At the end of the day this is what matters, being proud of what we've conquered and are happy for doing, in your case, playing! Good luck in your journey!
Thank you so much. I so wanted it to be perfect but then the video would be my 50 year violin progress 😅
Watched your entire video and you made some amazing progress! I am an adult student violinist myself, I have been playing most my life but more as a hobby and recently picked up lessons again. I shake like crazy during recitals as well, it is so hard to control sometimes but it’s a lot of fun!
Thank you! Recital nerves are so real... What are you working on now?
I enjoyed very much Thank GOD for person's like you inspired ❤️
Thank you! That really was the intention behind my sharing this video. If I can start learning the violin as an adult, anyone can!
Congratulations:)
Piece of J.S. Bach played with great musicality.
You have done a lot of work.l am impressed.
I started learning violin 20 moths ago at the age 61. I love it.
Violin is so beautiful.
Thank you 😊 I hope you are enjoying your practice
I thought you were excellent and soooo brave. Keep up the good work!! 😁
Thank you Tara!
I love seeing these type of videos, I can totally understand the frustration and "embarrasment" that comes from rewatching your old practice videos.
Loved the video, felt identified a LOT, im currently at book 4 of susuki after a solid year and seeing your progress made me tear a litte c,: hearing you play troughout the books brougth me back so many memories.
You can definetly hear the difference after, keep up the practice sis!
Yay Suzuki buddy! I'm so happy my little video found its way to you.😊
Thank you for sharing your journey! As an adult beginner myself, this was incredibly motivating to watch. I hope to make as much progress as you have when my 2 year anniversary rolls around!
Yay adult beginners! What are you playing now?
I have to say that from the intro I thought it was going to be really rough but then I watched the whole thing and I have to say I'm impressed! I've been playing cello for a little over 10 years and viola a little over 6, and I had teachers for every year, so for you to go a whole year by yourself and sound the way you did in the recordings and then do a recital after only having a teacher for a year is pretty impressive! Keep up the good work it only gets better the longer you play. Hope to see more videos of your progress!
Thank you! The first year was like walking blindfolded… im learning Liebesleid now to break up my struggles with Bach a bit. Perhaps I’ll make a video about that in the future.
Congrats on your year 2 recital. Your rhythm is great and your sound is good, and you made it through without breaking down, which is better than a lot of people! 😆
There’s one great advice that I received during my first days that I still try to follow everyday - Perfect every small, simple things at every stage of your learning. Don’t think “I will improve this later. I am ready for new challenges now.” The time to perfect what we have learned is today! 😊
Thank you! I was on the brink of breaking down 😂. I’m definitely guilty of ‘I’ll come back to this later’. You are right. When I catch something not working I should try to fix it right then and there.
Wow wow wow!!!! I still think what you have achieved in this two years is extremely impressive and brilliant, it is also inspiring. Even in just some few months in, you sounded good 👍 Keep up the good work and thank you for sharing this❤🎉 from one self taught violinist to another 🤝
Thank you so much! Your words brighten up my day 😊
Brava! I’m a professional violist. I’m very impressed with what you’ve done in two years. Keep it up! The best thing as an audience member is that it looks like you’re having fun and your love of the violin really shows. That’s something many professionals cannot do so brava!
Thank you so much! I try not to lose sight of the fact that I’m doing all the hard work because I love the instrument and the music, especially when practice gets hard, which is like everyday 😅
as a violist and cellist, can i just say that you’re doing amazing and you’re extremely brave for allowing yourself to show your progress especially as an adult learner! you’re already great and you’re going to be phenomenal, not just in ability but knowledge. keep it up and let the progress motivate you!
A violist AND a cellist?? Leave some talent for the rest of us would you?! 😉
Thank you. I shall keep practicing ~
Lyra, I watched your video from start to finish and I truly congratulate you and thank you for sharing your progress with us. Learning the violin is not easy, as you've found out. Yes, it's about music but more importantly, is about learning about ourselves and what we are made of. Do we give up easily, or do we have the persistence to stay with it, until we do. Mastery of the violin is really mastery of ourselves and during this two-year journey you've found out that you do have what it takes. Congratulations and thank you for sharing your progress with us, in the meantime keep up enjoying "Amber Lady" and take good care of her, as I'm sure you will!
Thank you for your kind words ☺️ as with any art form, discipline is so important. There are days even weeks when I don’t feel like practicing but I have to keep going! Can’t neglect Lady Amber!
You are so sweet! 18 days and you were doing great already! It's great to see that your hand (fingers and wrist) movement changed a lot with 7 months. Your arm was strong and hard and gets smooth with time (this is what I am trying to achieve now, 4 months yet, but you gave me hope that it will get better with 7 months yeyyy). Great job! :)
Thank you! I do have a lot of tension. So relaxing my wrists, fingers, and well…everything really, is a challenge. But there’s hope for all of us! Keep practicing!
🤩 You’re doing great. I don’t have the patience to learn violin so I leave it up to my son in high school. But as a self taught in the beginning, you did wonderfully. You’re on the right track. Keep it up. Can’t wait to see and hear as you progress. Good luck.
Thank you so much!
You are inspiration to me as I embarked in the same jurney 1 year ago! Really don't stop with this beautiful instrument. Your progress is amazing as the first year you had the persistence and the habit fo practice without a teacher please continue uploading your progress
Thank you 😊 welcome, my fellow beginner! What are you working on now?
Your 1st unsupervised year was great. You did very well above many kids with their teachers! Postures, bow arm, intonation they were pretty good❤❤
Thank you! I spent so much time on UA-cam looking for tutorials haha.
I admire your determination. Bravo 👏👏👏. Keep up the good work.
Thank you 😊 I’m still chugging along
Great job for only two years!! You have a great bow hold. Keep it up!
Thank you. I shall!
Your recital was awesome! It's so cool to hear the progress of all your hard work.
Thank you! I panicked so hard up there 😅 but I’m so glad I did it 😊
You are right, it was pretty tough to listen to this. But I tell you, this is the stuff that makes achievers and, heroes, and leaders. I applaud you for your effort. Perhaps one day I will have some of what you have and will learn to play an instrument.
Thank you. I wish you find the thing that you feel compelled to do and go for it! It will be tough but worth it.
Your progress is great!! 👏 I'm on the same journey right now- close to 3 years of playing (with the 1st year self-taught) - and i just had my first recital last week. I was much shakier than you was 😅 Applause for getting through! I know how hard it is to keep going although you feel like it sounds so bad (it didn't!).
Thank you so much! I’m so glad we are both on this journey. Learning the violin is so rewarding and humbling at the same time. Having a teacher makes a massive difference though!
At 7 month you were doing great! I played that song after 3 years!
Hehehe 😊 thank you. I’ve been thinking about revisiting some of the pieces I played earlier to see how they feel and sound now.
Ваши результаты и работа над собой однозначно достойны восхищения. Вы огромная молодец!
Не сомневаюсь что вы тренируете игру каждый день. Пожелаю не бросать игру и добиться больших успехов. ~Удачки😊
Thank you so much!
Good to know I’m not the only one! It took me two years before I could listen to myself practice without wincing every second. You’re doing great!!
Thank you! Yes, the first two years is very rough 😅
Hello! This video is so great, and will be serving as my inspiration on playing the violin. Ive wanted one for a long time, and im finally getting one this december. This was a very very good video! Thank you for sharing your progress!
Yessss! You’ll love it 😊
Thank you, Lyra, for sharing your experience. This gives me so much hope and encouragement as I learn violin. I was impressed with your bow control.
Thank you ☺️ I hope you enjoy your learning journey. Keep playing!
I really enjoyed your concert very much, you are a very brave woman! To face ones own struggles really is a tremendous challenge that never ends after starting violin playing. To see your ambition to improve and not to give up inspires me very much. I am 58 years and after years of practising I never had the courage to play before audiance. You are my hero 🥰💃🎻🎶
You are too kind ☺️ Part of the appeal of learning an instrument is that I get to performance and share my music with other people. It's nerve-wracking for sure but that rush of adrenaline? There is nothing like it! Do give it a try and know that the audience is rooting for you 💪🏼
Much kudos to you for hanging in there - you are starting to see some good results.
Thank you 😊
Thank you for sharing your journey. I'm on my seventh year as an aspiring violist- and am no where near you!! Looking forward to more videos
7 years in itself is an achievement. Kudos to you! What are you playing now?
This was awesome!!!!! Your love for your instrument is so apparent in every snippet. Not to mention, your first recital was fantastic. I've played violin for a while, but you inspired me so much, and your video gave me so much joy. From one violin player to another, thank you for being the embodiment of what true passion looks like. I'm leaving this video reminded of why I love playing our instrument. I'm in awe and I look forward to your journey ahead!
Thank you for your kind words! I’m glad you enjoyed the video. How long have you been playing / what are you working on now?
@@lyra_hou I've played ~14 years, give or take 1-2 because I started in Korea, then moved to the US and re-started LOL. My most recent solo repertoire was Ysaye's 3rd sonata and Strauss Violin Sonata (my fav!). I'm playing a summer festival soon and I hope they'll let me vlog some snippets and I can share!
Oh my dear god Ysaye 3?? I can't even imagine playing that in 20 years... I'm mortified all over again that you watched my video 😱😱😱
do vlog the festival so that us mere mortals get have a peek at how the masters play. I've never heard the strauss sonata. Research time!
That’s very good. i’m just starting to play the violin so this is very encouraging. thanks 😊
Yay! I hope you enjoy your journey 😊
Hiya!! As someone who's messed around with music for a good bit of my life (admittedly with varying degrees of success depending on the context), this was encouraging to watch. Although I follow a bunch of violinists, I can't imagine myself ever playing an instrument which makes you track your own intonation. If a piano I play on is out of tune, I can just shrug it off, as long as I did my bit and played the right notes. The progress from those earlier stages to your 2-year recital is noticeable, and you stuck through all the pitfalls from beginning to end. Congrats!! Great job!! Good luck in your Bach challenge!!
Thank you so much! the intonation challenge is a little sadistic... but when you nail it, it's very satisfying ☺️
Beautifully done, I appreciate what you are doing with your experience to encourage others (like me). Bravo for making the video, I loved the added thought bubbles!
😊 thank you. I’m glad you find it helpful. Do you play an instrument?
@@lyra_hou Yes, I am taking lessons for viola, as an adult beginner. Progress seems quite slow although my teacher says I am improving. I appreciate your video showing reality of learning!
Yay adult beginners! We are our own harshest critic. If we trust our teacher to teach us, we should also trust them when they say that we are improving! Keep it up 😊
Dude, for 2 years this is amazing progress.
☺️ Thank you. That's very kind.
Thank you for sharing. I just started playing violin after a friend gifted me one. It’s the hardest instrument I’ve learned to play. Your video is a good reminder I should video my progress as it seems to go so slowly but it is there.
Oh what a good friend! I’m hope you enjoy playing. It’s so hard 😅 but so rewarding!
I just picked mine back up after twenty years of playing here and there. I enjoyed watching this and I am happy for you that you have found joy in your playing! I hope you keep doing and you are doing great! I admire your confidence!💛
Thank you ☺️ I’m glad violin is back in your life! The struggle is so real but so much fun!
Absolutely inspiring video. I have been wanting to learn the violin for a number of years and I have been working with the studies of my immediate instrument..Drums which have been absolutely challenging as well as trying especially when it comes to Symphonic Percussion..
I will be sure to check out more of your videos since they have been extremely inspiring to me....Thank you
Thank you ☺️ I’ve been curious about percussions ever since Whiplash. Please tell me it’s less intense than that 😨
Thanks for having the guts to post this. I'm 50 and about to start this journey myself. I do have legit lessons starting next month so right now I'm just trying to get some basics off of you-tube.....also on a rental violin.
Congratulations on starting!! I hope you’ll enjoy it. Teachers help a lot but I’m so glad you are finding resources online already. Have fun!
From a violin teacher's perspective, this is great progress for just two years. You had good intonation from the very first month so I had a feeling you would progress quickly. By month 7 you were getting some really nice right hand flexibility, which sometimes takes much longer to learn. Thank you for sharing! I love the name of your new violin!
Thank you so much! I named my violin Lady Amber to match my cat Lady Grey 😉
@@lyra_hou I love it! I have a grey cat too. Must be a violinist thing!
The quality of this video is completely outstanding! I was expecting around 100k subs at least and I can not tell you how surprised I was when I scrolled down and saw the number. Keep it up! You're definitely going to blow up :) And you're shifting after only 2 years?? 😲😲
thank you 😅 I'm only 6-week old in UA-cam land so this is all very new and a little scary for me. Kind and generous people like you definitely made the embarrassment of sharing my progress worth it 😊
Love it! You have inspired me to give violin a try thank you😊
Oh how lovely! I hope you enjoy playing 😊
this is so cool, I was thinking of getting a violin because I want to play some Vivaldi but can't on my guitar (self taught guitar) and this video has pushed me in the direction of getting one. thank you so much, hope to see more from you
Yes!! please get a violin and let's struggle together 😊
I've played professionally for 50 years and taught for more that 40in New York City. You have no need to apologize for your playing. You have done very well for two years of work. Be happy for what you have accomplished and and enjoy what you are doing. Keep at it!
Thank you 😊 I’ll keep going~
Amazing progress 😍!!! I've been playing violin for 1 year and I dont regret it!
Thank you! I’m so glad you are enjoying it too!
This is amazing, congratulations to you.
I'm a multi-instrumentalist who mainly plays piano but has quickly picked up a lot of woodwinds and brass. But strings have truly stumped me, they are so incredibly hard and I just feel so dejected and unmotivated when trying to play the violin because I sound like s***. Your video is so motivating because it has shown me what amazing things you can achieve in 2 years with just some hard work.
Sorry for the long comment! But thanks for this video!
Thank you! Yah strings are rough especially how steep the learning curve is initially. I think it’ll take 5 years before I can sound somewhat decent. But come back to the violin. Don’t give up yet!
I just started to learn the violin and will love to keep working on it!
Yay beginners! I’ll keep posting videos on progress or practice so feel free to come back when you need some company. ☺️
Ive been playing violin since i was a kid, and I dont think i was as good as you at 2 years. Keep up the good work! :)
Thank you so much! Perhaps now it's time to get back into it? 😉
Hey very nice progress! It inspires me that you are pursuing this passion. I wish you the best, and hope you will always continue.
I have been playing most of my life (I am 25 years old now), and almost wanted to quit multiple times, but a lot of it is just due to unnecessary demands that I put on myself, along with perfectionism.
Also, I’ll have to check your Bach series out. I love baroque and renaissance music.
Anyhow, all the best in your practicing!
Thank you 😊 and don't give up!
As a violin teacher -- you have done well. Keep on Keeping on.
Thank you!
If we stop learning we stop growing. Well done to choose to learn and grow!! Your technique has improved so much and your confidence will follow!
Although I haven’t touched it in a decade, I started violin at 14, which is also considered “late,” but I made it into a fairly competitive community youth orchestra by the time I was 17 (so I just played with them for 3 semesters, but I felt so pleased!).
Currently, I’m learning a second language and I’m convinced that the whole “children learn faster/easier than adults” is a fallacy. They’re just not all uptight about looking foolish. But once we get the pride hurdle out of the way, the learning and growing doesn’t feel so out of reach.
Well done!
Thank you for the encouragement and well said about learning and growing. I do believe that children learn faster in certain aspects. But as I get older, I also get much better at learning. Our brain might not be as malleable as children's but we also have more experience to draw from when forming new neural pathways. Bottom line is that, like you said, as long as we are still learning and growing, our age is of little significance.
I was smiling the whole duration of this video. Loved watching your facial reactions. I guess I need to find a teacher if I want to improve. Thank you for sharing.
Ahahaha thank you 😊 yes teachers help so much! There could be things that we struggle with for months and it takes them a few minutes to point out what exactly is wrong. So if you can definitely find a teacher.
