I also wonder about that... I've played the violin since 7 yrs now and I'll maybe buy an electric violin in the end of this year. For me, it wouldn't have been good for me to buy one at the beginning bc I needed to practise the tunes (I was maybe 8 yrs at that time). I don't know how adults learn all these things (sorry for my bad english 😅)
Wow you're such a fast learner! I've been playing the cello for 10 years now and I admire you so much for all the effort and time you put into learning this wonderful instrument!!!
My brother got a violin for band in hs. And he hasn't touched it since he graduated a few yrs back.my dad plans on selling it soon, but I'm kind of getting a tad bit inspired so I might tRy to pick it up before he sells it haha
About my intonation: In these first 2 years, I didn't care too much about intonation. I was so enthusiastic and motivated, I just wanted to play and enjoy it. Not ideal, but not being too picky kept me excited and motivated instead of perfectionist and frustrated. After making this video, I started paying close attention to intonation and it improved drastically. Now, almost 5 years into playing, things are going very well and a 5 year progress video is in the works now. 🙂
Super knap! Ik ben 33 en heb in mei m'n eerste viool gekocht, beviel goed, heb nu lessen, een serieuze huurviool en een stille viool om m'n buren te vriend te houden. Keep it up, hoop ooit zo ver als jou te komen
Ok, I love that you're an adult who just learned. Most people are like..."oh yeah, I started when I was 5" and it was sorta discouraging. I thought because I was older (15 haha) that I was too old! I know, sounds dumb right. Thanks so much!!
I started last year and I was 27 😁 unfortunately the virus didn t help me, after only 4 lessons I had to continue learning by myself. I'll never be great but it s too much fun ☺️
I'll be 16 next week and i just started playing violin if my calculations are right if i practice playing for 5-7 hours, i should be able to play good when I'm 17 or 18 yrs old.
You are doing very well for only being at two years. However, I believe instead of moving on you more complicated songs, you should focus a little bit more on tuning. I understand you are still learning, but it's better to backtrack and be in tune than struggle with it later on. I know this from experience. I never bothered to count when I was first learning so I still have issues with rhythm and beats of the notes even if I can play quickly and in tune.
True, I find it hard to play everything in tune. I'm working on it. Funny enough, rythm and counting on the other hand somehow comes way more natural to me.
I didn't listen my teacher or practice for many years. My hands have always been too tense and I've now become bothered by it. I could be much better if I had listened to my teacher and practiced
What the heck. Ive been playing for six years and I'm twelve and we haven't even learned vibrato yet. This girl has dedication and she's a VERY quick learner keep it up!
When you're older you have a lot more experience with how to learn and practice things. dedication and discipline increases too as you mature. You'll get there :)
Everybody has a different pace. Don't torture yourself becaus of it :) In my personal experience, I've been learning the violin for 7 months now and I'm close to a perfect vibrato already. Time moves differently for all people. Kepp that practice Up !
I ever hesitated about whether I should begin to learn violin at the age of 25.Your video motivates me ,I think its not late for me to start leaning a instrument right now. Thank for your posting.
I'm 24 and I just bought my violin. Right now I'm having a hard time tuning my violin but this will not stop me learning this wonderful instrument. 😊 Currently I can't afford a violin lessons but I will try to learn the basics first. 😊
I started at 32 and it takes a lot more than just simply inspiration or interest but passion, perseverance, and loving the gloomy lessons and exercises....but it worths....
How often do I practice the violin? (Because I keep getting that question all the time.) I practice 3 to 6 days a week, it depends on whether I have more or less time that week and whether I feel like it. At the beginning I practiced 1 hour a day, now it's between 1 and 2 hours.
I've been played for 12 years and I'm so impressed with how quickly you have progressed. I don't even think my tone improved that much in two years. Sounds great! Keep up the good work!
I used to play advanced, but after I stored my violin in 1989, and having recently taken it out in 2022, I can hardly play anything. My fingers are like cement at age 77. The violin feels too small for me now for some reason. Don't stop like I did, and lose all you learned. I'm also having trouble extending my 4th finger to hit the 'C' on 'E' string, which used to be so easy. Don't ask about 10ths!
vicky robins tuning: the G-D-A-E strings should be in tune. To tune your violin, you start from A, then you tune E (with A), then D (with A), then G (with D) - playing them as fifths. intonation: your finger should hit the right notes in the fingerboard coz even a millimeter off can make it out of tune not a violinist but watching TwoSet makes me understand hehe
Jael Smith I just learned it from watching TwoSet. I’m not really a string player (not classically trained either), but the tune strings in fifths I understand (coz chorister, perfect pitch, and music theory) All the best in music!!! May linG linG bless you 😅
As a music teacher, I find this beautiful. You really made a jump around the 1yr, 11mo mark. Your technical proficiency went way up and you started moving with the music. Brava! Nice work!
Wow at a year and ten months you seem to have made a huge step forward when compared to a year and six month. This next year will be huge for you as well keep it up!
I'm following your progress since the beginning, and that's great to see that you progressed so much. I've been playing the viola for 2 years too, so I've always felt like we were improving in the same time !
That is so nice! And it's very insightful and motivating when you need it to watch someone with the same amount of experience or someone who is a bit further on in the process. And viola is so lovely! I once asked my teacher if I could learn viola as well, he said it was better to build a solid foundation on the violin first, then the transition wouldn't be so hard.
Wow, violin is a very slow and hard instrument to learn. I’ve been playing for about 4 years now. I play for my school and practice almost 2 hours everyday during school and 3 days a week in summer for a couple hours. You’ve made actually incredible progress. You’re still a little hesitant and heavy on your bow, but with a little more learning and confidence, that’s should go away. We all have our little quirks. Good job!
thank you for posting this. Too often all we see are children who are gifted. Nice to see someone starting out and sticking with it. YOU are an inspiration to many. Thank you
I'm 21 I want to learn many instruments. I was never in band. I wish I was as later in life I developed a dream to be able to play in an orchestra. Violin is one of the instruments I want to learn. I'm currently learning piano and guitar. But man on my piano final and my voice final at school I got so nervous I messed up....I've been performing, well, singing for years and I still get nervous!!
Performing is superscary at first and only gets better by often doing it. Maybe you'll start the violin one day, it's lots of fun. 😊 Oh, and definitely take lessons if you can.
I had the same multi-instrumentalist impulse at 21. That was about when I picked up violin. Now, 20 years later, I play and teach piano, guitar and violin professionally, so it definitely can be done. Its usually not possible to practice enough to be able to play three instruments at an equally high level of technique though. Definitely the case with myself. The trade off has been worth it though, since I never had any interest in being a technical genius in the first place - I wanted breadth of experience so I could write and orchestrate more effectively. Oh yeah and somewhere in the meantime I discovered the enormous pleasure of playing the viola, which is essentially a slightly bigger violin. In a classical setting it’s my favorite part to play, a way underrated and totally gorgeous instrument.
Papyrus Senpai guitar makes violin much easier. And learning piano helps with just about everything because the notes are in a set place and you can learn what sharps and flats sound like. I think you’re making perfect choices that will make learning violin much easier.
Darling you are doing a great effort, and that is super admirable. Just as an advice, slow down a bit; you can play many songs but your technique is not as good as it can become if you focus on the right things. Tuning (that’s the main one) left hand relaxation (above all the wrist, which looks a bit strange and can get you an injury), your links between up and down bows and tonalisation. If you go for those ones with the same passion, you can become a great musician😊
All this people telling her to focus on intonation and other stuff. Guys, she DOES know of course the things she has to work on because she has been recording herself! Some of those things you can work and work for years and are going to be just fixing with time. Please if you are going to say something is better to give an exact advice or exercise SOMETHING THAT SHE CAN USE. Saying -Oh, you should work on intonation blah blah- is not an advice. Try to be helpful for others, and do not judge. By the way, I admire you, you are doing great and in your music I can see not only effort and hours of hard work but also passion. Something that some people with more than 10 years playing still doesn't have. Congratulations and keep working hard, you really inspired me to keep going. Also if you want yo can watch my channel and tell me what you think about my playing 😊
Hi, im a piano player but i think this applies to me too, I don’t know if she is self taught or not, but I think she is for the most part. Being a self taught player means that there isn’t anyone to tell you what you should Improve and/or what you’re struggling with, therefore she might not be aware of that or maybe she didn’t realize how important it is. Of course she did amazing progress no one denied that, but some constructive criticism would really help. In fact, I would love it if I was taught that I have a bad habit when playing. Amazing playing Marijke!
As a musician, I can't stress the basics enough. At two years, she should be able to maintain a good tone. I can't believe it hasn't been corrected already by her teacher. I'd be finding a new tutor if I still sounded like that.
Thank you for this video! It made me realize that it really takes practice, patience, and time in playing the violin. Most of the time I beat my self up whenever I practice but seeing how dedicated you were, it inspires me to do the same
Keep working on your intonation. A good tip to train to know when you’re perfect with your first (best place to start) is the A on G will make your A string vibrate, E on D will vibrate the E, D on A, D string. For some reason, the B on your E string will ring, too. ❤️
I know this video is a year old, but for someone who started late in their years i think you are doing quite well. I'm an orchestra teacher and I also give private lessons. My husband does symphony and orchestra teacher too. I hope i don't offend you but I wanted to just offer a few tips. For intonation I strongly encourage the tapes. At least for the first three years. I still have the tapes on my violin particularly in the upper positions. You can buy the don't fret tapes where you stick them on the fingerboard. As long as the strings are tuned properly the tapes work. It will help along with using your ear so you know you're hitting the right pitch. After the first year with the tapes you should be able to hit the pitches without having to look at the fingerboard all the time. My husband even had high schoolers he had to put the tapes on their instruments to help with their intonation When you're using the bow make sure you bend your pinky, and not keep it straight this will help so your fingers don't get numb. When you shift to higher positions try not to make that sound where you hear the sliding. Shifting should be effortless to where the audience doesn't hear. I would recommend you use the books Suzuki Violin school. Essential Elements for Strings, Kayser -- Elementary and Progressive Studies, Op. 20 for Violin, and Sevcik -- Shifting the Position and Preparatory Scale Studies, Op. 8 for Violin
What a coincidence that I watch this video 2 years after it was published. So, if you still play the violin, it would be 4 years today. Your progress was wonderful to watch. Thanks for sharing!
I’m getting to the advanced point in my high school orchestra and I still use tapes (my teacher made me put them on there but I only had two) then he put two more on to make it easier
@@MarijkeViolin Actually, tapes are definitely the answer, at first. You really need to learn what the notes should sound like first, then you should be able to take off your tapes. Trust me, it will improve your intonation enormously. I would like to say that I am impressed by your improvement and determination.
I have been learning once a week since January 14th this year and never once did I use tapes or stickers as it meant you had to learn without assistance where to place your fingers and I have had no problems learning - every now and again I still don't place my fingers correctly but I am still learning so it is early days yet.
@@MarijkeViolin I would love to hear Kuchler G major again from you. it's easy and pleasant to ears and enjoyable if played in tune. (am a beginner trying to playing that piece myself of course :)) )
I have binge watched progress videos like this one and I have to say, at the cost of sounding rude, yours is truly outstanding and inspiring. Most progress videos exhibit self taught artists playing solo pieces which is awesome in it's way. You practiced solo and took up the challenge of playing in an ensemble and for that I salute you. Great work! Keep it up!
You’ve progressed really far but I think you should keep working on being in tune rather then skipping straight to Lindsey Stirling. You’ll end up having to backtrack when you reach a certain point and will find there is no hope for progression if you can’t play in tune in 1st position. Amazing ambition but focus on the basics first. They’re called building blocks for a reason - if the foundation level isn’t right and you try to build on it more and more, eventually the tower will collapse xx
Violin is a very daunting instrument to learn. If a person only endlessly practiced scales as a beginner, they’d give up before they’d finished a year. When I was a beginner, I’d challenge myself to music that was above my skill level just for fun, and to stretch myself a bit and see what I could play. She demonstrated in the beginning of the video her focus on technique. I think it’s important to have fun while learning.
TheStrivingHero they are just giving her suggestions and they do have a good point behind the words. They are just giving her constructive criticism and everyone needs that. If you don’t get feedback, they most time you can just be oblivious to many things that you are just doing wrong. They aren’t being harsh or giving them hate and I repeat. They are just giving her constructive criticism
Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky thank you I wasn’t trying to be critical but I’m just talking as someone who has been learning violin for over a decade and did have to go back an relearn the basics after 4 years
I am 16. And i brought my violin 2 years back..... I really want to learn violin..... Bt it is not easy to find violin teacher in India....... Also I am busy in my studies....... For architecture....... Its very difficult to do all these things..... Bt now i can after watching ur video.... Lots of love.....
You're such an inspiration. I used to play the piano when I was 3 until I was 5-6 for free because my kindergarten teacher - who was also a pianist - saw the potential I had the moment I memorized the piece she played for us in just by watching her doing it once... so she would give me private piano lessons. After I started the primary school, I did't have the chance to see my piano teacher anymore, but she offered to give me lessons at my house, but I had to buy a piano. My mother didn't want to invest because it cost much, considering our financial status back then. My dream crashed and until now (I am 21) I am afraid of touching the piano, I hate seeing people playing the piano, there's a part of me that can't accept the fact that I can't be a pianist anymore... But you kinda motivate me to restart again. If ever I will... you'll be one of the person I'll owe you a favor.
i love this video!! i'm 14 and i've been playing cello for 5 years now and i obviously love it A LOT most people think that you have to be young to start learning how to play an instrument but i think as all long as you have passion and you really want to do it, anything is possible 💕
I play the violin for 7 years: see your progress bring me back to my first years when I started that beautiful instrument (at 13 in middle school) and joined to play some pieces, concertoes included (my 1^st was Concerto in la minore by Vivaldi). Thank you for sharing this! Also, I recommended to every beginner, and for someone who doesn't know, the pieces of Suzuki's violin books: a lot of fun and a bit of challenge, expecially with a teacher's accompaniment (at the piano)! And the duets (violin-violin) from A.Curci's method vol.2 are funny to play, too! Sorry for my bad and simple English, but I hope to everyone an happy 2021: full of joy, life and music 😁! Greetings from a(n apprentice) violinist in Italy 🇮🇹
You are amazing. I was about to lose hope to learn playing the violin but now i see that it can be done. Your determination and passion have inspired me to put more effort. Thank you.
I'm a violin teacher and teach both kids & adults. Kudos for your hard work and tenacity! You play very musically. Your video is very inspirational for other adults wanting to learn violin. I think the most important illustration from your video is that progress happens slowly in the beginning, but with persistence progress does happen. I loved the joy in your face playing with a group. Yes, keep working on intonation, as well as tone and other technique. Most of all, take delight in your accomplishment. Many adults give up after a few months, and that sets you apart right there. Go girl!
During the first week the best option is to pluck and work on the way you hold the bow and the way your left hand holds the instrument instead of directly going in with the bow and playing open string notes. I noticed on your 4th week, your bow was constantly moving bow lanes, which would’ve been a good concept to work on in your first one or two weeks. Also, even when you were at the 1-2 year mark, your bow was constantly in the piano lane, even though you were trying to make a forte sound. When you do that, it often makes an airy or even slightly creaky sound.
I started playing songs by ear at seven! I’m now in high school and I’m playing at a competition tomorrow! I also learned a thirteen page piece in 2 months. The violin is my second favorite instrument which I’ve been playing for almost three years! But I do better at the piano :)
I'm an 11 year old pianist and violinist,(violin at age 7 and piano at 9) this video is basically my progress on piano. As soon as I knew the basics, I moved on to learning really hard pieces. My firts completed kind of hard piece was Fur Elise. It took me about 6-8 months to learns all 4 pages.
We just bought my very first violin last week... I'm 15 so I've got a lot of time to do the practice, but I think its still hard for me because I only got UA-cam because there is a limited amount of violin tutors in our place so... I'm stuck here... Plus I'm a student with limited time... I'm currently learning the basics and "Amazing grace" "ABC" and trying to work on some christian songs for church.... I'M REALLY INSPIRED TO CONTINUE AFTER WATCHING THIS! I Hope in a while I will learn more and be like you! ❤
lion popsicles Oh. We're same. My violin just arrived yesterday and I hope I can learn by watching YT videos. Another thing is that, I don't know where to find music pieces that I can practice through. I'm 17 btw.
Hey guys, it's awesome to know that you want to learn violin!! But being self-taught isn't the best way to learn sometimes. It's admirable that you (like me) tried to learn on your own, but get an expert. There are small details only a professional will be able to help you out with. The first time I had an actually trained violinist teach me, I was about a year in being self-taught. I had to start from the most basic stuff all over because my elbow was moving too much! There were small tweaks she had to make with me, like posture and intonation. I've been learning for about three years now, and I'm not that far along, actually. I don't have access to a teacher or lessons where I live, and on top of that I'm trying to finish my senior year, so I haven't too much time to practice full-time. Don't be like me, please 😂. Take online lessons, at least. Like a Masterclass, which would be great. Sadly, I don't have that much musical talent either and my fingers are you stiff for this, so I'll probably drop it soon. But I wish you the best of luck!!
I think you've done a great job. I'm hoping to follow in the same footsteps. I'm 61 and had my first violin lesson last week, and I really enjoyed it. I intend to keep up with my lessons and practice daily or as often as I can, and try and keep myself motivated, that's the key I think. 🤞
Remember to really relax. Your body needs to be fully calm (especially your hands) to reach a better level. I played 10 years really stiff and tensed and now I have to work against it a lot. Just a tip. Keep going! I am now playing almost 12 years so stay motivated and positive!!
No hate but I have some tips: 1. Try moving just your forearm and not your elbow. It will get you straightened bows 2. Make sure all your notes are right 3. Don’t move around a lot
I am so grateful to occasionally watched your video, I have been even trying to learn to play the violin for many years , always start and then abandon it at the end, the last time my teacher told me maybe this is not for you you cancel lessons short notice . I am doctor and the times I had to cancel I had emergency patients and I couldn’t go to the class, I felt so bad . The other problem for me was that when I wanted to practice the violin needed tune and even I wanted to tune it with the app and devices it didn’t work . I know it is me I have to put more effort . Reading comments and watching your video gives me hope and motivation. Thanks!
You're so amazing and such a fast learner. I wish I had record stuff like this when I first learned the viola. In 6th and 7th grade I was always so self conscious and embarrassed that I was not as good as the others in higher grades and since the beginning I stressed myself out and constantly strived to be 1st chair until now. I still am even though I'm 2nd chair in 8th grade now.
i was concertmaster for 5 yrs, and now i'm a sophomore in last chair. my teacher decided it was time for a change. it's less big of a deal than i thought it'd be. though i'm still gonna challenge my way back through the orchestra lol.
Saved me from a big mistake, wanted to play, id rather perfection my other talents than start a new one from scratch, stil a nice guide that being persistent and continuous practice makes people improve, what ever you chose to do.
I feel so motivated! I just bought my first violin a few months ago. While I LOVE it, I don't practice nearly as much as I should. Thanks for sharing your journey. It is inspiring.
OMG! That was so great! I can give u an advice 😉 Look at your bow, relax your wrist and be careful with your left hand pinky (don’t let it be down) That was amazing 😉! Ling Ling will be proud of u! 😉❤️ Pd: I know, I’m too late 😂 😜
i have been playing the violin for about 9 years now (i’m 15) and you are such a fast learner!! i still struggle a lot with sight reading tricky rhythms and figuring them out, so if anyone has any tips i would love to hear them. amazing job!!💕
Your video gives me hope - I wanted to learn how to play the violin since I was a child but didn't have the chance... so I thought that this particular train had long since left the station 😐 maybe it isn't too late for me to take some trial lessons?! Thank you!
Indeed, listening is very important for playing the violin. There are different methods and children learn in a different way. My teacher doesn't use tapes, only with children and very temporary. Playing in tune isn't easy and I'm still learning, but I'll get there.
I'm not sure if you want to be helpful, because I find your comment not helpful at all. You shouldn't blame my teacher for my progress, especially since you don't even have one yourself. It's true I need to pay more attention to intonation, but my teacher is not to blame for that. And there are many teachers who advice against using tapes because students must learn to use their ears. I trust my teacher on this one, so I will continue as I'm doing.
Marijke plays I think its best if u use tapes first then if ur good enough to know the correct pitches then u can remove it. Lol. Im just a beginner tho playing 3 months. But a lot of professionals and teachers advised to always put tapes first.
I'm glad you say that, thank you. 🙂 Ofcourse we can have different opinions, but we way we speak makes a big difference. I remember my teacher used tapes with an adult, the guy couldn't hear at all if he was in tune or not. And he uses them with children. A good teacher looks what works best for every individual student. Thanks again, I'm glad you apologized. Have a nice day. 🙂
I have to say, watching this makes me want to pick up my violin again and keep learning. It is my biggest regret that I gave up my lessons at 11 years old. I got frustrated and just stopped trying. I would have been playing for 20 years now if I didn’t give up. My Dad even bought me my own instead of a rental to inspire me to play again. It has sat in its case for almost 20 years. Keep up the hard work! Congratulations as well. It is an inspiration to see!
It's awesome to hear my video makes you want to play again! Pity you stopped back then, but adults have advantages over kids when learning this: we have more discipline, more concentration, a better understanding of music theory and we can look beyond temporary frustrations and know that struggles are part of learning. I really hope you pick up the violin again! You'd be surprised how much you can do after only one year already. 🙂
You’re doing great for 2 years, better than most high school students! I’ve been playing for over 20 years and my advice to you is keep working on the basics. Technique technique technique! Scales to practice intonation, and also work on bow control. Great job though!
Have you gotten one yet? The process of learning the violin is challenging but really fun! I’ve been playing for three years and I’m still learning stuff as always :)
Very good progress. How do you get access to about 5 different violins over this period? Which type do you prefer and why? I'm an adult learner too, more in the country and fiddle styles.
Thanks! My first violin one was a rental. After 3 months, I bought the black electric violin (a Bridge Aquila). After 1 year, I could rent a better violin from my music school and returned the other rental. I switched my electric violin for the same model with 5 strings at the store where I bought it, but returned it after a month or so (I wasn't pleased with having 5 strings. I made a video about this as well, by the way). So in the end, I have played on four violins so far, but I have two: my rental acoustic and my own electric. I prefer an acoustic violin, but an electric is fun for performing and sound effects.
Interesting mix! I started by buying an inexpensive one, then bought a more upgraded one after 2 years. Maybe an electric one someday. You might like to try some American fiddle tunes too, such as Arkansas Traveler, Faded Love, and Ashokan Farewell, which are all over youtube too.
Lol, the sheer number of “experts” in the comments telling her what she need to improve on. Can’t people just give compliments without any “constructive criticisms”? Oh, no way. We all need to share about OUR experiences and OUR knowledge. Her purpose in posting this video to inspire and encourage adults who want to start learning something new doesn’t matter! We need to show the everyone who reads the comments WE know it all! *roll eyes* Anyways, awesome job learning the violin! Must be tough and hope you continue to do what you enjoy doing! :)
To get better I would work with a tuner! Maybe try getting some stripes because intonation is the most important! You are doing great.... I have been playing for four years and you have managed to catch up! Keep up the good work!
Thankyou Marijke for sharing your progress. Well done, lovely to see your video. ( l started playing violin in my 60s, life didn't afford me the opportunity earlier / also started guitar and piano / up to stage two on all 3 instruments. Piano my strongest, although people can recognise my tunes on all 3 instruments ) Tuition being spread over 2 term classes, group daily sporadic seminars, when ever life affords the opportunity. Suplimented by videos, cd and book theory. All giving slightly different approaches. I found l progress when l play 1 to 2 hours daily, 4 to 5 days per week. Watching your lovely video, has encouraged me to continue practising. Best wishes to yourself and all your viewers. Sincerly wish you all well in your chosen musical careers, or musical hobbies. Often challenging, though enjoyable, life teases it's never to late to learn.
Thanks for allowing us a window into your practice life. Very revealing, and the progress is apparent! As others have said, I suggest getting your tuning down since from a listener’s standpoint, it makes it difficult to fully enjoy the piece. Also taking some ear training helps! Happy practicing! 😁
When I see how difficult it is to learn to play an instrument I think I would not have the courage to start. You have nevertheless acquired a beautiful deity but do not take umbrage you are rarely in the tone (maybe the violin is badly tuned). Congratulations anyway for your progress. Friends of France
I’m 65. I’m learning violin, keyboard and flute at the same time for three months after I retired two years ago. I have lots of fun and joy in playing music.
You've made some pretty damn good progress for just 2 years. Still have a long way to go though, one piece I can recommend for checking your intonation, rhythm, and tempo, is the Ciaconna in A Major by Johann Schmelzer. It's not a very hard piece to learn, but it definitely puts your intonation in check, because if even one note is slightly out of tune, it sounds bad. Good luck on your progress
Suerte
Thank you for this! It inspired me to start learning the violin (or at least, start next year). Sometimes I get discouraged to pick up this instrument because most are saying that one should start as a child in order to learn.
Thank you for publishing this video! I'm also an adult instrument learner. I started the hammered dulcimer when I was 24. I've been playing on and off for about four years now. It's great to see other people's progress!

*TIP* Practice 40 hours a day and consult to Ling Ling
I'd rather practice whenever I feel like it and post cover songs on UA-cam. 😋
😊 It's a Ling Ling joke used to say from a very talented violinist.
jajaja you mean 50 hours a day.
Yassss twosetviolin fanssssss I love Brett and Eddy
Nooooooo a two set reference IF YOU CAN PLAY IT QUICKLY YOU CAN PLAY IT SLOWLY - said a while doing everything wrong😂😂😂
Why... every video I've watched like this... *they always buy an electric violin in there 1st 2 months*
Very, s a c r e l i g I o u s decision
AmAAZing whhhyyyyyyyyy
yeah, it's i n t e r e s t i n g,
I guess people just become curious about how different it feels and sounds
But a electric violins with sacrilegious five strings just sounds like a piece of wood and a bow without any rosin.
That’s so true!!!

About my intonation:
In these first 2 years, I didn't care too much about intonation. 🙂
Can't wait for your 5-year-progress video Marijke ! 👍
Did you already know how to read music when you began? I loved your video!!
Super knap! Ik ben 33 en heb in mei m'n eerste viool gekocht, beviel goed, heb nu lessen, een serieuze huurviool en een stille viool om m'n buren te vriend te houden. Keep it up, hoop ooit zo ver als jou te komen

I'll be 16 next week and i just started playing violin if my calculations are right if i practice playing for 5-7 hours, i should be able to play good when I'm 17 or 18 yrs old.
@@maxlanggam6020 did u really played 7 hours by day ?
You are doing very well for only being at two years. However, I believe instead of moving on you more complicated songs, you should focus a little bit more on tuning. I understand you are still learning, but it's better to backtrack and be in tune than struggle with it later on.
I know this from experience. I never bothered to count when I was first learning so I still have issues with rhythm and beats of the notes even if I can play quickly and in tune.
True, I find it hard to play everything in tune. I'm working on it. Funny enough, rythm and counting on the other hand somehow comes way more natural to me.
Intonation
I didn't listen my teacher or practice for many years. My hands have always been too tense and I've now become bothered by it. I could be much better if I had listened to my teacher and practiced

How often do I practice the violin? (Because I keep getting that question all the time.)
I practice 3 to 6 days a week, it depends on whether I have more or less time that week and whether I feel like it. At the beginning I practiced 1 hour a day, now it's between 1 and 2 hours.
Wow
Was that self taught or taught by any tutor?

I used to play advanced, but after I stored my violin in 1989, and having recently taken it out in 2022, I can hardly play anything. My fingers are like cement at age 77. The violin feels too small for me now for some reason. Don't stop like I did, and lose all you learned. I'm also having trouble extending my 4th finger to hit the 'C' on 'E' string, which used to be so easy. Don't ask about 10ths!
A lot of know-it-alls here who don't even know the difference between tuning and intonation. Yikes.
BRad YES THANKS
What is the difference? Plz dont @ i dont know any of this stuff:)
vicky robins
tuning: the G-D-A-E strings should be in tune. To tune your violin, you start from A, then you tune E (with A), then D (with A), then G (with D) - playing them as fifths.
intonation: your finger should hit the right notes in the fingerboard coz even a millimeter off can make it out of tune
not a violinist but watching TwoSet makes me understand hehe
@@ilovebeingprecious oooh that makes sense lol, thanks a lot!:3
Jael Smith I just learned it from watching TwoSet. I’m not really a string player (not classically trained either), but the tune strings in fifths I understand (coz chorister, perfect pitch, and music theory)

Good job!

Marijke plays thanks for the advice! I'm gonna keep on practicing voice and piano and soon violin!!
😃👍

That is very kind of you to say, thanks a lot! 😀😀❤
Mónica Orozco Cornejo no one meant to be rude, maybe she can’t hear the wrong tunes
The people only say that because she go so fast and its more important to have a good afination and bow pass (sorry, i dont speak good english)

My husband even had high schoolers he had to put the tapes on their instruments to help with their intonation
When you're using the bow make sure you bend your pinky, and not keep it straight this will help so your fingers don't get numb.

You really need to work on your tuning. Maybe try using tapes. Most kids use it, which help them learn wear to place their fingers.
True. Only tapes aren't the answer, listening is. Didn't pay too much attention to it in the beginning but now I do and luckily it's getting better.

Great work! Keep it up!
Your reply makes me very happy, thanks a lot for saying!
Everyone and their mother keeps commenting this. I think she gets the point.
@@allieren exactly! I feel like these people are being far too harsh on her honestly.

When you do that, it often makes an airy or even slightly creaky sound.

lion popsicles Oh.

Remember to really relax. Your body needs to be fully calm (especially your hands) to reach a better level. I played 10 years really stiff and tensed and now I have to work against it a lot. Just a tip. Keep going! I am now playing almost 12 years so stay motivated and positive!!

1. Try moving just your forearm and not your elbow. It will get you straightened bows
2. Make sure all your notes are right
3. Don’t move around a lot
It kinda affects your bowing and it affects the sound because of wear the bow is moving too
I like how all beginners I see always sway around way too much as if they think it makes them look more professional but it just looks forced
For straighter bow i was taught to move my wrist
those aren't really tips. Everyone with half a brain already knows these things.
Dont move around a lot,

When I heard you playing some of lyndsey Stirling's songs, I liked. You learned to play faster than me!!! Keep playing!!
🙂🙂🙂
I’m 21y now and i just started my first lesson a month ago! You really inspire me!!!

Yep. 👍 Learning a skill takes long, especially this. 😛

Well done! I’ve been learning the violin for 9 months now and you are an inspiration!

I feel so motivated! I just bought my first violin a few months ago. While I LOVE it, I don't practice nearly as much as I should. Thanks for sharing your journey. It is inspiring.
You’re super good for two years. I recommend you practice with a tuner and work on that intonation. Some of the notes are a bit off. You go!
Yes, I'm working on that. I didn't pay enough attention to intonation. Luckily it's getting better by now.
OMG! That was so great!
I can give u an advice 😉
Look at your bow, relax your wrist and be careful with your left hand pinky (don’t let it be down)
That was amazing 😉!
Ling Ling will be proud of u! 😉❤️
Pd: I know, I’m too late 😂 😜

i have been playing the violin for about 9 years now (i’m 15) and you are such a fast learner!! i still struggle a lot with sight reading tricky rhythms and figuring them out, so if anyone has any tips i would love to hear them. amazing job!!💕

I love how you have so many different people available to practice/perform with. It was always very difficult for me to find other players in my area.
Playing music gets so much better when you can do it together! I have found other players through the music school and Facebook.

Your video gives me hope - I wanted to learn how to play the violin since I was a child but didn't have the chance... so I thought that this particular train had long since left the station 😐 maybe it isn't too late for me to take some trial lessons?! Thank you!
It is never too late to start learning anything! If you put in the effort, you'll be surprised what you can do in only one year. 😃
same here 😭
I feel like with most adult beginner violinist, their intonation stays the same' cause they can't hear if the notes are in tune...
Is that different with children then?
You are incredible!!! Your progress is amazing!!!!
That's sweet, thank you!
This is exactly what it's like to watch The Sims learn to play violin and I love it. Good work :)

Amazing ! I'm 26 and I hope this year I will buy a violon to play with it. :) You inspire me
Have you gotten one yet? The process of learning the violin is challenging but really fun! I’ve been playing for three years and I’m still learning stuff as always :)
@@ashnikfield4224 I bought one in May / June 2019. But I started playing the violin in early 2020! I am super happy.
You are amazing! What an inspiration to those of us who get discouraged at the beginning. Thank you for being an encouragement.
Yes, the hardest part is right before you start. And thank you! 😀😀
Wow!!! Just wow! I’m 13, I’ve been playing the viola since I was 9, but you improve soooooo fast!!! Amazing!

*roll eyes*
Anyways, awesome job learning the violin! Must be tough and hope you continue to do what you enjoy doing! :)
you are criticizing the criticizers

Thanks! I've been working hard on it and it has improved lots. I didn't pay enough attention to it in the first 2 years. 😅

When I see how difficult it is to learn to play an instrument I think I would not have the courage to start. You have nevertheless acquired a beautiful deity but do not take umbrage you are rarely in the tone (maybe the violin is badly tuned). Congratulations anyway for your progress. Friends of France

i noticed quite a few tuning and posture problems a lot of months in, as well as a shaky bow, but that is just criticism, good job.
My 5 years violin progress video is up now! ua-cam.com/video/oz70U2etIr0/v-deo.html
Don't even THINK about moving on to third position until you are in tune in first position, other wise you have no hope in playing the right notes
Rebecca Marcott bet she didn’t even learn second
you guys wanna stop being elitist pricks? Yeah the tuning is off but comments like this don’t help anyone now, do they?
Cryxlxnley H it’s probably for the best, third position was easier for me to learn than second position
I’m 65. I’m learning violin, keyboard and flute at the same time for three months after I retired two years ago. I have lots of fun and joy in playing music.
Thank you for posting. It gives me hope as I’m just starting out.
Did I see crossed legs at 7 months?
I had no clue about orchestra etiquette at the time. 😋
@@MarijkeViolin I see. You still did amazing 😃
Ewwwww
The best comment lmao
Suerte
gabriel choque no mames!! 2 años? Toca del asco.
Thank you for this! It inspired me to start learning the violin (or at least, start next year). Sometimes I get discouraged to pick up this instrument because most are saying that one should start as a child in order to learn.
To become a great solo performer: yes, start as a toddler. To become good enough to have fun making music together: just start! 😊
Thank you for publishing this video! I'm also an adult instrument learner. I started the hammered dulcimer when I was 24. I've been playing on and off for about four years now. It's great to see other people's progress!
