Free Self-Taught Piano Guide: ko-fi.com/luisgraca/shop/selftaughtpiano "How did you learn? / How would you learn if you were starting today?" - These are by far the questions I get asked the most. It's hard to summarize everything in a UA-cam comment, so I decided to write a PDF that goes over how I learned, how I would practice if I was starting today, tips to stay consistent and motivated, tips to learn faster, how the pedals work and resources I found useful during my journey. Hopefully it will save you months of research. In the last pages you will find some tables you can use to log and track your practice. After all, what you can measure you can improve. To get it for free, insert "0" and click "add to cart". If you would like to support me, insert any other amount. Good luck! 🎹
I don't think people realize how much 2000 hours is. In 2.5 years it's a crazy amount of hard work and consistency, I'm not surprised with the progress you were able to make because you have had to be very disciplined to be able to do this. Respect bro!
I am a professor of music. To be able to play all of this after that amount of time... from now on, I will inspire my students, what can they do with a right amount of practice - showing them YOUR VIDEO. You are a true real-life musical hero!!!
This isnt about piano. this about the power of commitment and most of all. PRACTICING WITH PURPOSE. most people play 15 years and cant do this...because theyre not really practicing, theyre playing the same old crap at the same level for some odd years. practice with purpose in whatever it is youre doing people. This is a prime example of what you can do.
Came to say the same thing. I love seeing other people’s progress. It’s always a great inspiration to see other’s success. Been practicing on and off for a few weeks now, but this is the inspiration I needed to keep plugging away.
Lots of people believe this is fake. Most of them learned slowly and rigorously with sheet music and a teacher behind their back. When watching video like these they don’t understand, they can’t imagine the process. They never experienced being excited all day about practicing a hard piece for monthes everyday and seing little progress day by day. I can relate to this journey, in my first two years I was literally hooked to the piano, any moment of the day I was close to the piano, I played. When I didn’t play, I watched tutorials, masterclasses.. . For me, the reality is simple : motivation and muscle memory does the job. « Talent » is negligible in front of so much passion and effort. Anyways, congrats for that nice progress, fellow passioned pianist and I wish you all the best.
🙏🏼 you said it better than I ever could! I'm pinning this comment and pointing people to it whenever they say it's fake. Motivation and muscle memory do the job for sure! I would love to see your progress too 👊🏼
Muito bom!! Parabéns pela evolução. Eu toco guitarra perto de 20 anos e há uns 2 anos comprei um teclado midi. Estou a aprender sozinho. Aprendi algumas coisas, mas acho que não estou a evoluir. Este teu vídeo foi muito inspirador para mim. Obrigado pela partilha e uma vez mais, muitos parabéns.
As a kid who was a classically trained pianist (under my parent's compulsion 😆)and abandoned all of it for 15 years and just now picking up the craft back again - Wow, this is amazingly inspiring! It took me 10 years of experience to be able to master the Revolutionary Etude, and you've somehow taught yourself that and other similarly difficult pieces in only 2 years!! That's an unbelievable accomplishment- granted I never had the dedication or patience to practice for hours everyday like you do, but it just goes to show how far that perseverance can take you. You obviously also have a natural talent, to be able to teach yourself at such a high level. Bravo!!
Thank you! I only "learned" the first minute of Revolutionary Étude, and it's far from being perfect 😂 It's a shame that people quit playing because they follow a strict / not fun method. If you still want to play, try to play the stuff you really like to listen to. It doesn't need to be too strict. Also, a few lessons every other month can help a lot, instead of having that commitment every week 👍🏼
I think doing something like piano is very contingent on how you feel about it. For example, you seem to have disliked the piano due to being forced into it and so your motivation wont have been there, therefore meaning you would take longer to learn pieces. Whereas, this guy seems to adore the piano and so learning pieces would take little time really. Tbh, it’s just about how much you want it. If you want it enough then you’ll do it.
Completely the same, haven’t played for 15 years and bought myself an e piano now. Just spend 3 hours on it and it’s so nice to play again. Hope to be more motivated now that I’m not forced to play but chose it:) respect to this dude
@@annababente nice! I hope so too 💪🏼 I've created a Discord server for self-taught / adult pianists where we share feedback, tips, motivation, etc. If you're interested - discord.com/invite/4bEChkbWHf
This is testament to dedication and hard work. This is not what a typical person will look like at 2.5 years because the amount of focused practice you are putting in is similar to someone working a full time job. I think its awesome how far you've come! Keep it up!
Brilliant man -really- HOW refreshing after all the whiny "people think it takes years, I'll teach you Chopin in half a day " rubbish on here🙄🙄 All the best for your musical future fella!👍🙂
@@Rqidz yeah, I was practicing 3-4h in the beginning, but then that became unsustainable. So over the 2.5 years I practiced around 2h a day on average, which is around 2000h. I didn't count the exact time haha
it is refreshing and encouraging to see the real struggles that a person goes thru when learning something and not being afraid of showing it. With mistakes and all. Thank you for sharing!
Tomorrow I'm buying my first piano. I was on the fence about it. Thank you for walking the path you have so that others may be brave enough to try it too.
@@minim33n94 It's great! I ended up getting a Roland FP10 at my local music store - the guy there was very helpful. When I was a kid I would listen to the piano music in Minecraft; Wet Hands was my favourite - I promised myself I'd play it one day. I can play it flawlessly now. :D I'm not that interested in reading music; I just like to learn scale progressions and chords; sometimes I just sit in the evenings and play random stuff; I can even play parts of Fur Elise and I'm learning The River Flows in You now, it's tough but the progress makes it worthwile. Honestly my only regret now is that I waited half my life to realize how much I love this amazing instrument. Hats off to all of you that can play well, really, it's a super power.
YES, you have inspired me to start learning, again! Took about three years of lessons when I was 10 years old. Then puberty and hormones hit and I gave up piano for teenage girls. How I have regretted that many times. Now 68 and retired and electronic pianos are very affordable so getting ready to get back into it.
i started playing piano at 48. now it is 2 years and i made progress. i am able to sing along pretty well. but still i felt frustrated thinking it was impossible to do more. then i saw you. and i am proud of you even if i don't know you. and you are such a motivation. thank you.
Thank you very much! It's not impossible, it just requires more practice. Check out my self-taught piano guide if you haven't, it might be helpful - www.tinyurl.com/selftaughtpiano
Hey, first of all - thank you! Second, don't be discouraged! It's very different to follow the classical piano training under a teacher and to be self-taught / learn whatever you want. If you are having trouble progressing, maybe try to work on pieces you really like! Also, you probably have better technique and can read much better than me 😉
because he is a liar, that's why... his videos from month 2 and 3 are pretty much perfect. He is either second coming of Amadeus or a big fat liar and the other one is like 100 times more probable
@@Gajdosh Its legit, his technique is rather bad and hes constantly straining. I would say he spent most of his energy on learning the notes and managed to learn pieces so quickly because of that, only later improving his technique.
I just started learning to play the piano at age 54, maybe too late, and I feel motivated by the way you learned. I hope I can learn something from your wonderful story. Thanks for sharing.
I’m the one who has never learnt to play any instrument and music theory. I started to learn piano from zero 9 days ago and I’m learning “Idea 22” now. That’s one onf my fav. Watching this one motivates me more. Thank youuu 😻😊🍀🌹
@@luisgraca No. I can learn new pieces by UA-cam videos or by ear if they are easy to medium and repetitive. Would like to get better at improvising. I know where melody should go in my head, but finding the right chords is trial and error at this point. Keep it up!
@@luisgracai was wondering if you learnt to read sheet music at the same time? I'm also learning the piano myself (in a much slower pace), but I can't read rithems on sheet music. I use it to see what notes I need to play, but I need to hear the music to get the timing right. For example ,I just finished the Sultans of swing live solo ( uploaded it on my channel yesterday), I have the sheet music, but without the video of the person who wrote it on youtube, I would not be able to play it.
Amen brother. Only needed to watch 10 seconds of your advanced performance to be grateful and proud for you. Everyone should understand what expressive journeys await them at any point in life - and the power of discipline and time (whatever their craft). Absolutely beautiful. Will be watching the rest. (I am on a similar journey). Cheers.
@@gigabyte6299 Yeah same. I tried it a few months ago, but when I play it I want it to sound good. My technique isn't quite there. Hoping to start it by the end of the year! 🤞
What I admire is the ability to learn to play the piano (from scratch) without reading sheet music and the speed with which, right from the beginning (first month) you have so much hand coordination and such an extraordinary memory for the amount of pieces you play in such a short period of time and with only 2 hours of daily practice...
I have never played, but just ordered my first piano, and it can't get here fast enough. I wish I had started 40 years ago, but now that I'm retired, I have the time to devote to this fully! hope I can stay as motivated as you were during that first couple of years. Your progress is very motivational!
@@luisgraca why thank you for asking! I'm nowhere near your progress, but I'm enjoying the hell of it :) Still fighting with my left hand clumsiness :(
I love seeing all the comments from people finding piano again (or for the first time) at 40, 50 and beyond. Leads me to think that there seems to be a collective shift at some point early in our creative lives that sees us abandon that side. At 45, I've rediscovered my love of dance, and now (like so many others here) am seriously contemplating buying my first keyboard, after giving it up in my teens. Good luck to everyone ❤
Luís, this video is so inspiring! It gave me a whole new perspective of how far discipline, some determination and just having fun along the way can take us. I am going to continue practising with this new lens. Thanks a lot for sharing your incredible journey!
i started crying after watching this video, it came at the right moment when i was about to give up on my journey, i'm a high school student but the exam i'm preparing is the toughest in the world, we're expected to sacrifice a lot of things for it, but i wanted to make sure music wasn't one of the things. this saved me, anything is possible with time management and patience. my progress so far is trying to master the pieces way above my level literally in the starting, la campanella and mvmt 3, i'm stuck in the first 20 seconds and now i know why, i'll go step by step patiently, i'll follow your footsteps 🙏thank you
Thank you for the kind words 🙏🏼 Don't give up, even if you just play a little every day during the exam period, you will make progress. Try to create a schedule with what you will work on so you don't waste any minute! Also, if you want to play Moonlight Sonata 3rd Movement or La Campanella, I suggest you get a teacher. Even 1 or 2x per month helps a lot. Those pieces are very advanced and it's easy to get frustrated and give up if you don't know how to practice them properly
Your piano journey is so inspiring! Great job! 🤩 I started my piano journey 6 weeks ago and what inspired me in your video: put goals for yourself, know the pieces you want to play even if they’re out of you’re league atm, take progress videos and record your milestones. I’m so doing that 😍 thanks for sharing your journey!
I'm in my late 40's and just took my first lesson today. I wanted to learn the basics, proper technique and reading music as a base before I really push myself in the self teaching process. Videos like this are great motivation. Well done sir.
@@luisgracaso impressed by your progress! I have a similar journey but I’m having a hard time reading music. Did you teach yourself music theory as well?
@@PrettyBelieverOfChrist thanks! Yes, but I only started learning it after upIoading this video. I watched a lot of videos and read blogs / books about it. I just released a Music Theory eBook for self-taught pianists. If you are interested - ko-fi.com/s/a465a91dc6
A couple of weeks ago I bought a piano (Yamaha P45) for my 10-year-old son for his first piano lessons. I said to myself, I might give it a try myself! After all, I love and have always loved music (from Classical to Pop). Then I saw your video (in life nothing happens by chance) and so, at almost 50 years old, I started with video tutorials and Flowkey. You have been a great inspiration, thank you. I wish you all the best.
While I will never be able to put in the hours you have, it is still incrediablly motivating to see how much progress can be madeif you just practice cosistantly! I just hope that I can make playing piona a routine that and stay motivated, so that it becomes a way to relax and just zone out of the daily struggle.
You've left me speechless. As a lover of classical music (piano) i had to rewatch to see if your hands belonged to the same person. You progressed so fast. And composing already. Unbelievable. I can't play an instrument or read a note but i listen to maksim mcvisa everyday in my art studio. I am going to add you to my list. Someday i hope to hear you play my favorite rachmaninoff's rhapsody on a theme of paganini #18. Keep up the hard work. Only YOU can make you better. Persistence is the key. Just look at how far you've come. Admiration from Nebraska USA 😊
Thanks a lot, Denise! I appreciate that 🙏🏼 You can find my originals on all streaming platforms. And I will definitely check that Rachmaninoff Rhapsody out 👍🏼
Hope you’ll read that a 23yo french guy nearly cried watching your video. It’s one of my goal and Einaudi and Sofiane pamart are the two persons helped me go through a hard relationship break w/ my ex. You made it bro! Now I gotta buy my own piano, start practicing and one day I’ll write a piece and send you that one ! (And proud to be your first fan on deezer, I downloaded the album, and I will keep hearing it all day long at work every day ! Congrats). Regards, Tom.
Hey, Tom! That's great, I would love to hear your piece one day. Looking forward to it! And thank you for downloading the album, I appreciate that! 🙏🏽 (I didn't know people still used Deezer haha)
So happy I came across your video! I just started to rehash my piano skills and bought myself a piano for my 40th birthday! I've already forgotten the basics and now doing lessons by myself through an app. I love the pieces you've played. I listen to these pieces regularly on Spotify. You inspire me to challenge myself more and to keep going. Thanks! Cheers!
I watched the whole video! And bravo! I’ve learned piano from 0 for 6months and i attempted level 3 of ABRSM test, result: distinction. I played 1h/day. So I’m amazed by your progression ! I think you’re clearly more talented than the average person 😊. Thank you for sharing ! Hope to see more pieces from you ! Xia
Wow thank you for that! 🙏🏽 Amazing what you can achieve in 6 months when you set your mind to it. Well done! I've been focusing on playing by ear and making my own arrangements of film music, check out my latest uploads if you're interested 🤜🏼🤛🏼
This was so inspiring. You’re truly gifted and watching this choked me up. I took lessons for a couple years starting when I was 10 but I didn’t take it seriously not knowing that 30 years later I would profoundly regret it. I was at my parents house two weeks ago and after not touching the piano for decades, something came over me and I had to start playing. Clair de Lune and The Godfather theme. I sat for hours and hours. My mom and dad’s favorite songs respectively. My mom passed unexpectedly and I’ve been in tremendous grief and I felt more therapy in beginning to learn how to play then I have in years of actual therapy. I can only dream to one day play like you. Thank you for sharing your progress. I hope to be able to share a video like this someday.
I'm sorry to hear about your mom 😔 I'm sure she would be proud of you for playing Clair de Lune, it's beautiful. I need to check The Godfather theme And yes to the therapeutic part, there's something about it that you can't explain. Thank you for the kind words! It's never too late to start playing again. I hope to see your progress video one day, tag me if you ever upload it :)
Amazing motivation. I teach some young kids in private, 5 year later they still can't read notes and no way to fix that, the motivation in only on parents. Keep the good work !
Thank you! I can't read notes very well either to be honest haha Synthesia videos or playing by ear help keep you motivated if you can't be bothered or struggle to learn how to read though
This is so motivating! I always feel I am too old to start learning piano and may be I am, but watching you making this much progress in just 2.5 years encourages me to go for it! Thank you for making this particular video. You have my gratitude.
Your never too old don't expect the progress of this very talented young man but I'm playing again after giving up as a grade 2 child over 50 yrs ago and loving it. DO IT !!!!
This is just incredible Luis! I am a professional pianist and I have spent countless hours practicing since I was four. You have a natural talent for piano as your hand coordination is excellent. You are also dedicated and driven. I think that is significant for one's progress. I am sure you have been learning a lot from watching videos when you were not practicing. It is equally important to study away from the piano. I am very interested to see how far you can go. Always push yourself further!
Thanks! During this period it was sheer dedication and drive for sure haha. My technique was not the best. Nowadays I do watch a lot of videos on technique and try to work on the musicality of the pieces rather than just pressing buttons. It is more rewarding for sure
I also have developed a passion for piano after listening to Ludovico einaudi's pieces. I have always liked melodies and music. Looking at your early days of piano and inspiration to nuvole blanche, I see myself. I just learned 10 seconds of Hans Zimmer's interstellar music on my friends piano the day before yesterday. And that was my first time ever touching a piano. Bless me people😢😢😢
Seeing you practice piano for at least 2 hours a day makes me realize that I am not working hard at all...In fact, I haven't even reached 1000 hours of my total practice time in my life. I am 17 years old and seeing this video made me rethink my laziness twice. Your passion for piano is very great! ❤
Much respect! Super progress at 2 year mark, you have inspired me, Moonlight Sonata is my goal piece now! Lovely compositions too, you should be very proud. That 2nd Yamaha sounded nice too
Oh my goodness! Praise the Creator for making you so wonderfully beautiful! I’m so proud of you and you seem like such a delightful person! You’ve encouraged me on my journey as well. We appreciate your light so much! God bless you!
Very impressive and very inspiring. Your commitment and self-discipline is amazing. I’m a newbie here. I played viola in my school orchestra 57(!) years ago and bought a keyboard a month ago, now aged 71! I practice daily for about two hours and am slowly making progress. Thank you once again for showing what is possible.
Great thanks for sharing, Luís. Your journey is really fascinating, and extremely inspiring. ❤ As a kid, I practiced on the piano for a couple of months at school. Today, at the age of 36, I bought a piano, and, the journey begins. 🙏 The goal is patient, consistent work and progress. The dream is to feel joy, excitment, and happiness along the way. 🎉 You, and your journey are pure INSPIRATION with capital letters, Luís. ❤ Thanks for sharing, and, God Bless You. 🙏🙋♂️
Thanks a lot, Tomi! Very important to find joy in it, it will accelerate the learning process for sure. Play the pieces you really like listening to, that will keep you motivated! Thanks for the kind words and best of luck! 💪🏼
Even 400 hours spent in Elden Ring videogame felt like a wonderful eternity to me. 2000 hours of hard work for self-improvement is very impressive. Thanks for the inspiration!
you have a pretty good story. my whole life i couldnt play the piano up until a few months ago when i found out i had relative pitch and started playing songs from my head and i figured out i could play literally anything without learning it which blows my mind to this day. i can play any song i can sing and ive never been taught anything
It is impossible to reach such a level in two and a half years unless you are very very talented, so, you are not a good example for regular people. Congratulations!! You are lucky.
Haha, thanks. It may seem impressive but now I realize it lacks a lot of musicality. Anyone can memorize how to press the keys, but to play the pieces with emotion and musicality is something else - it's the true goal. I've been working on it since uploading this video
Luis ~ you are a great example and inspiration ! Your dedication and persistence is admirable and encouraging. I started my piano journey and it was very reassuring, looking at your effort, to confirm my teacher’s saying that any literate person with the sense of rhythm and flexible digits can learn play piano via learning and practicing DAILY. One great pianist said the following: “If I don’t practice a day, I notice the difference. After two days my friends see the difference (I guess he meant his piers), after 3 days the public will take a note”. So, “regular people” buckle up, put some rubber pants on and stop whining and making excuses! Bravo Luis, keep playing, improving and inspire us all! 👏👏👏❣️
I love this video, it’s inspiring, I’ve been “playing” piano since I was 9 but I never really learned much and I took a long long break, but I got back into it recently and this is a great showing of how to improve. I personally also agree that brute force is good for learning pieces, only for ones you like though, a good tip is when you get frustrated, keep trying but if you find yourself getting genuinely upset then take a break and come back later or the next day. Practicing hands separately is really good advice, practicing until you make 0 mistakes is also great.
It’s amazing. I begann playing Keyboard and after just 1 week I could play my wedding song and different other beginner songs. When you’re motivated and do it daily you can do it too - You’ll be amazed!
As a pianist and a piano teacher, I admire your perseverance and your tenacity to learn difficult pieces way above your level. Though I'd recommend you take the time to learn other pieces before reaching them and use them as a stepping stone. Note: The 1st movement for Beethoven's Moonlight Sonata is more difficult than the 3rd one. Keep up the good work
Thanks! Yeah, after uploading this video I had some lessons for guidance and started playing more accessible pieces. But after a while, I realised that I wanted to try my hand at arranging pieces by ear. Everything is documented in my channel, check them out if you're interested 👍🏼
Omg this is so similar to my journey haha! I am also self taught. It all started with Ludovico Einaudi's Primavera, moved on to Moonlight Sonata and now I am learning Chopin. It's funny how I also didn't like classical music, now I appreciate it a lot.
I've been playing piano for 8 years and I've only just started playing Fantaisie Impromptu after spending a year learning the entirety of moonlight sonata. Its amazing you can play such a complex piece after only 2.5 years of playing, great work!
I'm sure your musicality and technique are way better than mine at the time haha. Well done for learning the full Moonlight Sonata! I still want to learn the 3rd Movement one day
I've been a "musician" most of my life, but never did I practice any of my instruments. From recorder, to clarinet to bass and guitar, always sitting at newbie phase... until I started piano in March, now you can't get me away from it. Loved this video, can't wait to see my progression over 2.5 years! Thank you for the song recs!!
Amazing! The piano is something else for sure. I would love to see your progress! I created a Discord server where people can share their progress and other tips. If you're interested - discord.com/invite/4bEChkbWHf
I couldn't resist leaving a comment under your video, although I do it very rarely... First of all, I want to express my great gratitude for the fact that you told your story so frankly and honestly, and in the case of the piano, opened your soul. I graduated from music school in piano class, enrolled before I even started school, the result is a red diploma and 8 years of my pure love for the world of music, and especially the piano. But now it's time for university, and I left home, I haven't played the piano for 2 years, which still tears my soul apart. Soon the moment will come when my instrument will return to me again and I will finally be able to reunite with it, start my little path of remembering again, I dream of playing a Revolutionary etude, Fantasie Impromptu op.66 and Chopin's Ballade n.1 in G minor, during all my studies I played Bach and Mozart the most, but the most interesting of Chopin bypassed me by the side. I am very afraid that during these 2 years some skills have gone away from me, but your video has given me a lot of motivation, strength and peace of mind that everything will work out. Thank you very much for that. I wish you good luck in promoting your works and you as a composer. And remember: the instrument is the only thing that you can never deceive, it will always show what's on your soul.
Thank you very much, I'm flattered! I have never been into Bach or Mozart, not really sure why haha. I guess we all have our own preferences. Hopefully you will be reunited with your piano soon and play all those wonderful Chopin pieces! I have been making my own piano arrangements of film soundtracks lately, but my plan is to compose more original pieces once I have a larger audience. Hope you'll stay around to listen to them! Thanks again and good luck 🤜🏼🤛🏼
This video is simply amazing! Thank you for sharing your progress. You cant imagine how inspirational/motivational this video is. Great progress! I ve started playing piano again after many years. I hope to have results like yours. That hand coordination thing...jeez!!!!!
Stunning! Consistency and patience is everything. I spent so many hours in basic songs and now i just sit down and can play them with my eyes closed. The piano is such a beauty! Congrats!
This is so impressive, so much hard work, and what fantastic progress you've made! I bought myself a piano 6 months ago and it's a present that keeps on giving, so I can totally relate to your urge to spend hours playing every day! As an amateur violinist with quite a bit of classical training I started with the advantage of knowing how to read music as well as a lot of music theory, but I've been teaching myself the same way you are, by learning to play pieces I love (mainly Chopin). Like you, I find closely listening to interpretations by pianists I admire hugely helpful, too. Learning this way takes patience and dedication (again, hats off to you!) but it's so much fun! Dunno if you'd agree, but one thing I've realised is that as soon as I think I've 'cracked' a piece in terms of knowing how to play all the notes, in terms of the musicality of the piece I'll have only just begun. So whenever you revisit easier pieces for fun in between working on a more recent challenge, there's still so much to explore, and as a piece slowly becomes effortless and pliable you stop thinking about the notes at all and really focus on telling the story of the piece. For me, that's the best feeling ever!
Thanks a lot, Serp! Being able to read and knowing music theory is an advantage for sure. Absolutely, learning the notes is easy, actually playing them with the right dynamics, technique, musicality... That's another story haha. And to be honest I don't revisit pieces I played in the past much, there's just so many I want to play and so little time! I've been focusing on making my own arrangements of film soundtracks lately. My biggest sources of inspiration are Patrik Pietschmann (film music) and Traum Piano (classical). I can't really describe what I feel when I listen to them playing. To think that one can achieve that level of mastery is incredibly inspiring and that always keeps me going. By the way, violin and piano are a great combo, hats off to you too! Do you play for fun or would you like to turn it into a career?
You can’t imagine the way this has just inspired me. I was feeling too insecure to start re learning piano at 27, and kind of shy cuz of the way I’m doing it which is basically tutorials. I thought I’d be too old too even try. Thank you with all my heart.
@@juanitagallego6684 Juanita - there are lots of advantages of starting learning piano as an adult - and you are still a very young adult!!! Just for for it girl and never look back! 💪👏✌️🤩
I just started learning the piano today, and your video showing your impressive progress from month 1 to year 3 is truly inspiring! Seeing your dedication and improvement over time motivates me to keep practicing and stay committed to my piano journey. Thank you for sharing!
I’ve got my daughter 12 and son 9 both in piano classes since they were both the ages of 5 and it’s beautiful listening to them. Watching you progress in 2 yrs makes me want to push and try to be where you are. Thank you for sharing and inspiring others.
Dude im blown away with this. I started playing piano at 6 and used fantasie impromtu as one of my audition pieces to get accepted into music school. On a different career path now but you showed me how easy I could repair my talent when im willing to dedicate the time for it. Professional Tip I can share. The part of fantasie impromptu you started with. For any runs or repetive patterns you find hard to play smooth, just rehearse that part repetitively but accenting the notes 2 different ways. Like long short long short long short long short several times. Then short long short long short long short long several times. While doing this, Play the long note loud for those 2 patterns, then try to play it smoothly and watch what happens 😉 This progression is unbelievable. To the person who's comment you pinned regarding passion. You do appear to have a talent that was found late. Passion and talent go hand in hand. Stay passionate!
Hey man, thank you! Those are nice tips. After uploading this video I got some lessons to work on my technique and musicality and he suggested the same for Revolutionary Étude - dotted rhythms or something like that. You can definitely get back to that level with a bit of dedication! Thank you for the kind words 🤜🏼🤛🏼
This is most definitely real for all those haters out there. Most important thing I have learned in piano is very simple and I hope everyone agrees: NEVER COMPARE YOUR PROGRESS TO LITERALLY ANYONE ELSE. All that is going to do is make you not motivated and discourage you from being better. Everyone learns at their own pace and some people just learn insanely fast for whatever reason lol! Keep up the nice work Luis! I especially like how you want to compose.
Thank you! That's true, you shouldn't compare because everyone has different goals, different practice routines and even biological differences. People say it's fake because I learned too fast, but I've seen other guys progress even faster. We're talking full Chopin Ballades in 1y with good dynamics kind of fast lol, it's insane I think my end goal is to compose film music, but we will see how that goes. Appreciate the support 🤜🏼🤛🏼
I'm getting my first Midi keyboard this weekend. I'm pretty excited. I tried guitar for 6 months, loved it, but my fingers never seemed to get over the pain on acoustic, even after 2+ hours a day of playing, so I gave it up, only realized recently that I still have a massive passion for music in the form of Piano and seeing this video only makes me that much more excited to get my hands on mine this weekend! 😄
That's wonderful, thank you for sharing! Very inspirational! The moment you mentioned you released your compositions I felt like it clicked, I gotta set that as a goal now!! It's long-term, but will be constantly pulling me like a difficult piece that one tries to brute force.
You know, I always felt discouraged thinking that I wouldn't get far by teaching myself how to play at the age of 19, but watching your journey and progression over the years has become such a true inspiration. Thank you for showing to the world that as long as your dedicated and devoted into learning about something you're passionate about learning, you can achieve the goals you wish to accomplish.
Wow, you inspire me so much. Most people can not achieve what you can in 5 years, let alone 2.5. I have to say, your Artemis piece is one of the most beautiful I have ever heard. Please, keep going with piano! You will be a well-known performer in a few years.
As someone whos played piano for about 15 years seeing your progress is amazing. I think most people get intimidated learning new instruments because of how many years others have played but youve really shown that its not about how long youve played but how passionate you are. If you learn songs you love you'll easily progress as a musician. A couple of tips to help reach the next level: practise scales and arpeggios (these translate very well to more advanced pieces and even songwriting but make sure to deliberately practise your technique very carefully (maybe look up some videos for good technique)), practise very expressively exaggerating even small changes in tempo or dynamics (and try playing with different interpretations to master playing expressively). You should especially focus on bringing out the melody (involves certain notes being played louder). Those are really your only gaps right now (unless you count jazz but thats a different beast entirely). Oh and maybe look a little bit into wrist movement too. Cant wait to see your future progress, at this rate you'll become a professional in no time!
Thank you very much, appreciate the tips. Indeed after uploading this video I looked for a teacher to have some guidance and I started practicing more scales, arpeggios, chords, etc. Musicality/dynamics is still a challenge haha As for jazz, I don't appreciate it much so I'm not planning to play it any time soon. Right now I'm focusing on making piano arrangements of film soundtracks and I use that as a way of practicing arpeggios and other techniques, it's been great!
I admire you greatly. I am self taught on the classical guitar, much the same way. Play pieces that you love but are ridiculously hard for you and power your way through. It keeps up the motivation and the itch to practice. Well done congrats!!❤❤❤❤ 👏 ✔️ 👍 👌 😅😅❤❤🎉🎉
Oh my god, I cant believe i bumped into your video. I too got interested in piano after watching the intouchable. Its been a few years already and have been listening to Ludovico ever since. THIS YEAR IM FINALLY COMMITTED to learn the piano!! Im super inspired by your journey!!!
Its really hard to believe how fast you progressed. Im considering learning piano, always enjoy hearing different styles, but never do i actually play anything as im not sure who or what to listen to. Your video is amazing. Well done man .
Yes:) I watched that movie over and over... and I knew Yann Tiersen before (when I was a teen), but hearing Ludvico in that movie just touched me on a totally different level... and to learn that it touched someone else so greatly and inspired such amazing growth in playing the piano... wow. You can't make this up :) Blessings to you my friend and this was very inspiring to watch.. I am still in the beginner mode (just purchased my Casio..), but definitely not giving up... thank you@@luisgraca
I've been playing piano on and off with little consistency over the past 20 years. I still can't play with 2 hands, your 1 month kicked my ass and now I'm inspired. Thank you friend.
@luisgraca I've managed a somewhat mediocre version of Dvoraks "Going Home" but it's a win and I'm going to bed happy I've achieved something this evening!
Thank you SO MUCH for sharing your journey playing the piano! I watched the video and I became motivated and brave enough to try Chopin's Nocturne Op. 9 No. 2. I recently fell in love with this piece, but I did not dare to try, as I thought I could not manage this... Well... I tried and memorized it within four weeks! It still needs some technical improvement, especially the last part. By the way ‐ your dynamics (in minute 4) are not bad at all, in my humble opinion! I want to play this piece till the day I die... ❤️ I can not even describe how fulfilling and passionate it is for me to play it! Thanks to your video I found courage to try more classical pieces like this one. I also love Eric Satie's Gnossienne No. 1. I heard it for the first time thanks to your video. I'm learning it now. :)
Thank you for watching! You never know what you can achieve if you don't try haha, well done 💪🏼 It's amazing when you find a piece that makes you feel like that. Keep looking for others that make you feel the same and learn them, you will never lose motivation! Gnossienne no.1 is simple and yet intriguing. Check out Antune's tutorial of it, it's very insightful
@@luisgraca It really did! I have a question, how do you combine the right hand piece with the left hand piece? That’s what I find difficult at the moment ✨
Ive been playing for like 7 years now, but I probably haven't even reached the 2k hours mark yet. This really shows how far dedication and motivation can get you. Well fucking done man, very insspiring. I'm gonna go play immediately!
Holy shit the shadows have hands! Nice progression. I just ordered my first piano (digital) today and wanted to hype myself up by watching people's progression videos. Hopefully they will deliver it soon.
This is insane! The progress you pulled off in just 2.5 years is astonishing at least! Especially given that you had to balance with work, taxes bills and whatnot. I cannot even imagine what your 4 year progress is like (going to check the video right after!). From a fellow amateur pianist, simply congratulations on your massive progress! Your dedication is admirable!
Appreciate it! Yeah it took all my time for sure haha. The 4y is more focused on me trying my hand at piano arrangements, but hope you enjoyed that as well! Now I'm back to learning classical 🎼

As a kid who was a classically trained pianist (under my parent's compulsion 😆)and abandoned all of it for 15 years and just now picking up the craft back again - Wow, this is amazingly inspiring! It took me 10 years of experience to be able to master the
Revolutionary Etude, and you've somehow taught yourself that and other similarly difficult pieces in only 2 years!! That's an unbelievable accomplishment- granted I never had the dedication or patience to practice for hours everyday like you do, but it just goes to show how far that perseverance can take you. You obviously also have a natural talent, to be able to teach yourself at such a high level. Bravo!!
Thank you!
I only "learned" the first minute of Revolutionary Étude, and it's far from being perfect 😂
It's a shame that people quit playing because they follow a strict / not fun method.

I'm sorry to hear about your mom 😔 I'm sure she would be proud of you for playing Clair de Lune, it's beautiful. I need to check The Godfather theme
And yes to the therapeutic part, there's something about it that you can't explain.
Thank you! I can't read notes very well either to be honest haha
Synthesia videos or playing by ear help keep you motivated if you can't be bothered or struggle to learn how to read though
This is so motivating! I always feel I am too old to start learning piano and may be I am, but watching you making this much progress in just 2.5 years encourages me to go for it! Thank you for making this particular video. You have my gratitude.
Thanks, Oliver! Never too old, go for it 💪🏼
Do it! I read a couple comments on another video of people in their 50s, 60s and 70s starting to learn. Never too late!
@@luisgracahow old r u
Your never too old don't expect the progress of this very talented young man but I'm playing again after giving up as a grade 2 child over 50 yrs ago and loving it. DO IT !!!!
I believe that anyone can learn the piano , so you should go for it! You are not too old to start learning the piano 💪
Bless me people😢😢😢
Keep going! Play the pieces you really like and you're more likely to stay consistent 💪🏼
Seeing you practice piano for at least 2 hours a day makes me realize that I am not working hard at all...In fact, I haven't even reached 1000 hours of my total practice time in my life. I am 17 years old and seeing this video made me rethink my laziness twice.
Your passion for piano is very great! ❤
You're 17, you have a lot of time to make progress! Keep working hard 💪🏼

Same also 17, us 17 year olds need to stick together lol im definitely putting more practice in !!
@@siratlantis6Bruh, I am the only one who doesn't practice. Till now, my focus is on Roblox and watching UA-cam videos for entertainment.
Much respect! Super progress at 2 year mark, you have inspired me, Moonlight Sonata is my goal piece now! Lovely compositions too, you should be very proud. That 2nd Yamaha sounded nice too
Thank you very much! I'm planning to compose some more originals in the near future 🙏🏼

Let's go! Anything is possible if you really want it 🤝🏼
Great thanks for sharing, Luís.
Thank you! Indeed it feels like a long time, but it's worth it 💪🏼
you have a pretty good story. my whole life i couldnt play the piano up until a few months ago when i found out i had relative pitch and started playing songs from my head and i figured out i could play literally anything without learning it which blows my mind to this day. i can play any song i can sing and ive never been taught anything
That's amazing! I wish haha, that's a true gift 💪🏼
@@luisgraca im asian if that makes you feel better about it lmao
@@Booples_ 😂
How did you discover this? That's amazing
It seems you do not realize almost everyone on earth have relative pitch 😂 and the unusual ones are the ones that do not.
@@TatianaGolovina-mu7sz thanks, appreciate it! Indeed, consistency is the key. Good luck on your journey 💪🏽
@@luisgraca Thank you Luis! 🎹🫶🎶
Thanks for the tips! Glad you're getting back into it 🤝🏼
Oh! I am so grateful for this video. Today is literal my first day of self-taught piano journey. I am so inspired 🙏❤️
I'm glad! Good luck 🤝🏼
It’s amazing. I begann playing Keyboard and after just 1 week I could play my wedding song and different other beginner songs.
When you’re motivated and do it daily you can do it too - You’ll be amazed!
Absolutely! People who don't believe it have not experienced that kind of motivation. Keep going 💪🏻
Haha what a coincidence!
A few months ago I discovered ago that film music is what really does it for me. Maybe you will too 😂 good luck!

I just start to learn the piano from scratch. Your video is truly inspiring!!! 🎉 many thanks for that!
Thank you! Good luck 🤜🏼🤛🏼
Your determination and discipline is truly admirable. Huge respect

Thank you! That's a great feeling, keep going 💪🏼
Very inspirational video, congratulations for your path. 💪🏼
Thank you! Appreciate it 🤜🏼🤛🏼
This is so impressive, so much hard work, and what fantastic progress you've made!
Oh, thank you, Juanita!

While doing this, Play the long note loud for those 2 patterns, then try to play it smoothly and watch what happens 😉
This progression is unbelievable.

We're talking full Chopin Ballades in 1y with good dynamics kind of fast lol, it's insane
I think my end goal is to compose film music, but we will see how that goes.
Yes! Great feeling when you get your first keyboard! I had the same problem with the guitar haha
Good luck with the piano! You won't regret it 🤝🏼

Very inspirational! The moment you mentioned you released your compositions I felt like it clicked, I gotta set that as a goal now!! It's long-term, but will be constantly pulling me like a difficult piece that one tries to brute force.

Thanks a lot! People often comment about my progress, but not on my originals. Appreciate it 🙏🏼
As someone whos played piano for about 15 years seeing your progress is amazing.
Musicality/dynamics is still a challenge haha
As for jazz, I don't appreciate it much so I'm not planning to play it any time soon.
