I agree with that assessment. I'm not a violin player at all but tone is very important to me when I buy guitars. Tone can also be very subtle. I've got to say that I like the Gagliano over the Stradivari. The Strad has very crisp and harmonic tones, and the Gagliano has more soul and weighty resonance, IMO. I like that full sound that melts into the next notes more than the Strad and gives a more visceral feeling in the gut. Plus I can use the leftover 9.9 million to buy a nice house to keep my instrument in.

@@maryb2798 Maybe in this case. There were blind tests, where experts preferred a plastic violin over the Strad. And they not only preferred it, they actually were convinced they picked the Strad. I think that speaks for itself. And for the bias.

The saying survived the test of time and now is used everytime a practitioner tends to focus more on the artifact, instrument or tool rather than focusing on its skills...
Agreed. I thought number 2 was the only one that sounded noticeably worse than the rest. I think I would save my $9,999,650 and just get the $450 one. And the average person would never hear the difference.
@@TheBonsaiZone yeah the cheap one sounded like crap XDDD, I also picked 4 and 5 after the firt 2 songs but I have to pick 5 after mario. I guess I would be more sure with headphones on though..
I'm a violinist and was super curious to see if I'd be able to recognize the "best" violin. I placed the first three violins correctly, but I kept being uncertain about #4 and #5. There are probably a few factors here which we can't recognize as listeners, regarding the playability. Rob talked a lot about how it felt to play #4, how the instrument wanted to give back a lot, and I think this is something that only the player can percieve best. To me, #5 sounded nicer than #4, but that's only half of the violin's personality. The other half is how it connects with the player. So I'm curious if I would still have ranked #4 above #5, if I had the opportunity to play it, myself 🤔
Hi Ania, similar assessment here, I also preferred the brighter tones of 5/Gagliano and would use it to play something like the Sibelius violin concerto, but 4/Strad when I went back and listened and compared just the last 2 violins, the Strad def had some attitude and grit, i can't really explain but it had a unique sound which set it apart from the rest. It's too bad they didn't have a Guarnerius violin to compare which has some deep tones on the G and soars on the E and it has the ability to project like 1/DiMateo violin
To me #4 and #5 were the best and from personal preference I like the sound of #5 better, But Stradivarius violins are thought to really sing in the higher ends producing a "silvery tone" which was what made the difference in my ear
As a guitarist and NON violinist, I chose the $10,000 violin as the best sounding. And the $70 violin was CLEARLY bad sounding. The $450 one is a good choice for a beginner. It really sounded solid compared to the expensive ones.
Very strangly I closed my eyes and I was able to notice which one was souding better and for sure I realized that number 2 never sounded good. Was very sharp and it felt like if someone was cutting on my skin. I knew third did not sound better tham the first and 4th and fifth was confusing, but they sounded a lot better than any of the previous ones
Same I guess right the cheapeast and I was between 4 and 5 but I closed my eyes in the last comparison and Idk why I guessed the 5. Anyway I'm gona heart it again 😅
Wonderful experiment! Musician seems, however, to change his “reverence” as playing different instruments. Hard for him to put his “heart” into playing $70 instrument. Perhaps blindfolded musician handed violins in a random order would result in a “double blind” experiment. ,
By sound I immediately noticed the Gagliano, the Amazon and the Stradivarius. Very easy to notice just by ear. The amazon sounds so bad, easy for a beginner to quit when playing it...
Professional violinist here-I thought No.5 was the most expensive! And No.1 was 2nd most expensive and No.4 the Strad was 3rd!!! Gagliano and modern good quality violins sound better than some Strads! I have played a whole recital a on a Strad and I love my $10,000 violin better!!! 😅
To be fair he was nervous while playing, I thought for a moment that was the strad (it was made to sound like a human, and was sounding quite like a one during megalovania) but them one of the note sounded wrong and I was like... no that isn't the strad. but if you take into account that he was nervous, it does make sense for the strad to sound worse.
I don't play violin but guitar, I too almost picked 3. But ended up picking 4. I think 5 is good but overpriced. However, I'm sure the differences between the many $450.00 violins is vast.
Hybrid Cenentri Gaming he would not have bought it lol, he probably just asked if he could borrow it from an organisation or something. He has no use for a 10 million dollar as he isn’t a professional soloist. He just makes videos for UA-cam. Also he wouldn’t have the money.
I was surprised to find that my favorite sounding violin of the bunch #3 was the $450 student grade. Second favorite was #5. I honestly didn't like how dark the $10m strad sounded, but #2 was so obviously the cheap amazon one. This makes me feel better about buying a $700 Schuster&Co as my first violin. If I had spent any more $$$ the difference in sound would probably go unnoticed by me. I'm thinking this will last me for a long long time, if not for life
Yup the $450 violin definitely punched way above its price. I could not tell much difference from the rest, except the $70 Amazon which really stuck out as bad.
@@evgeniiamahato5679 its easier to tell in person but you can hear the instrument is warm but it doesnt have as many overtones and doesnt resonate well.
Just came here after watching the SciShow episode about the sound of Strads, and all I could think about was that the player's perception of the violins can affect how they play. Notice the smirk when he's playing the strad, total give away hehe.
What blew my mind is I immediately knew it was the cheapest. I know nothing about music and was listening through built in laptop speakers.. I knew it was going to be bad, but I didn't think it would be THAT bad..
It's because it sounds better with the high notes (which a violin is most known for) while the 10M violin shines in the lower notes. Also it's more expensive because it's rare. Supply and demand. Not purely because of its quality. The way he's playing the strad could also be affected by him being more careful because it's so expensive and as he said, he was quite nervous just holding it.
I didn't like the 5th that much cuz it had like a darker timber and also a lot more hollow tone it doesn't project that much. The 4th violin has a much colorful and vibrant tone
@@minshubay6740 It’s expensive because of it’s quality. Stradivari made the best violins there ever was. That violin is 300 years old and it’s in perfect condition. The high notes are obviously better on the stradivari than on the other one. You don’t know much about this subject.
@@ape2533 The owner of the store said so. It is indeed high quality but supply and demand also takes part. I was just reiterating what's said on the vid. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
Some observations I made about the Gagliano vs the Stradivarius. The Gagliano has a “bigger” sound the Strad has a much “richer” sound. The Gagliano is for the assistant concertmaster while the strad is for a cocncertmaster or pure solo work
I definitely knew 1,4,5 were the best but inhad alot of trouble deciding between 4&5. To me they're used in different situations. 4 was very tearful in every performance. But 5 was also vibrant warm but not as tearful as the Stradivari which is ok when changing genres
@@kimberlywentworth9160 The overtones are still there. Never heard a strad live, so I don't know which overtones did get lost in the recording/playback etc, but I suppose it was enough to hear that there is a difference. I heard it primarily in the mid-range, around 300-600Hz
I recognized immediately which one was the cheapest, it sounded EXACTLY like my first violin (which was cheap AF, but I don't care, it'll always be my precious baby).
I didn`t want to guess the price, I just tried to decide, which sound I like more. Different songs had their own champions, but overall I loved the #5 violine.
@@SetTheCurve Maybe if you play for an audience of small kids. Violins are one of the few things where more expensive actually = sound better. If you don't believe me, just go to a strings shop and ask them to play for you... It will be very obvious which one is better.
Maybe it has more to do with UA-cam compression and the variable quality of speakers we’re listening on, rather than the player making all violins sound the same.
@@MinecraftRocks2012 Maybe you are right but the 10 million one, does not sound more than 100000 times better than the 70 dollar one.. 10million for a violin.. is very very ridiculous.
Agreed my fav. Like the dude said at the end though, the strat is worth 10 mil bc of it’s scarcity regardless of sound quality. I think the Gagliano is def the best sounding. I thought the first one worth 10k sounded like turd
I have to admit, it was very close between the Gagliano and the Strad for me. The Strad sounded like it was laughing through the fast pieces: Like “Ok, you want me to play this? Sure! Why not?” And the Gagliano sounded like it took it more seriously. Funny
I'm not a musician, but an audiophile who has been to live symphony concerts. I got them mostly in order, except for the top 2, I had reversed. I noticed the Strad's rich vibrant tone, but preferred the expressive voice-like dynamic tone of the $100k instrument, although I can see where ti would depend on taste and what kind fo music you are playing and what kind of emotion you want to express.
I thought number one was the most expensive because for me the sound is better of them all....and I guess it right, number 2 is the cheapest.. and I thought 3 is the second cheapest while I also like both 4 and 5..
Not sure about prices, but : 1: Sounds like you would expect a good Violin to sound. 2: Barely audible, but pretty soft, so tolerable. 3: Didn't even notice it, because of how average it is. 4: Rich sound, and a bit *too* rich honestly, like eating pure sugar. 5: *Perfectly* balanced tune, liked that one the most.
I liked the sound of the Gagliano best. I thought it had the best depth of sound. And as cheap as the Amazon violin was, I was impressed with the sound for $70. It’s not good but it sounds a lot better than I thought it would.
The man that made them took his secret to his grave. MANY MANY MANY have tried to duplicate but no dice. The few that exist are the only that will ever exist. 😔
Yeah, you are the type that would say "I feel the difference, but not 50k", when you compare a Ford with a Mercedes. Things come at a price, a lot of times the big difference in numbers make you say its not worth it, but that's the way it is.
Is a unique violin whose sound can't be reproduced. The 10 million is just a nominal value, in practice is priceless since its cannot be replaced no matter how much money you have. Is not unheard of ridiculous asking prices north of $40 millions in public auctions, so $10 millions for this one only means is not one of his finest (I could have missed it but I don't recall the video author mentioning the name of the violin)
@@Imman1s in practice, my car is priceless because of the memories I have with it and time invested in it, it couldn't simply be replaced by a matching model Reality is, once someone purchases a priceless item at a fixed sum, that's what it's been priced at I'm just making a little joke because it's only going to be "absolutely worth it" for a very, very small subset of people who are *really* into violins, and don't mind dropping 10mil on one.. even 99.9% of professional violinists would not consider it "worth it", because for most, it's unlikely they would ever recover that cost with the income they make performing with it
@@baucelabs1159 Very valuable violins aren't owned by the musicians in most cases. They are owned by the orchestra or a group of people or organization that has the funds to buy them. Often it is more of a way to give prestige to a player or orchestra. That being said there are amazingly good, others great and others so-so Strads and other makes also. Very few people have the skill to recognize the difference. Frankly I was most imporessed with the $100,000 violin. But without playing it or hearing it in person.....that doesn't mean much.
The last violin to me sounded the best it seem to have the most deepest sound of all of the violence. If I were a violin player I would probably choose number five because to me it has the most basic level sound in other words it hits the lower notes and just sings much better in my ears. Thank you sir
The same with me. I preferred the final violin. It sounds beautiful, deep, and rich. However, the Stradivarius is better because the sound projects louder compared to the last violin while maintaining a nice, deep quality in tone. The final violin would be really good if you're not doing a large concert solo but instead something more intimate.
That's why comparisons like this aren't terribly reliable. If the performer knows what he is playing, it can influence the quality of his playing even if he doesn't mean it to.
70 dollars is probably really breakable. The 500 dollar range is better for a starter violin. A professional violin probably goes for around 2000-3000 dollars. Remember that sound is not as big an indicator of price as age and manufacturer are.
Agreed. I really loved the way that one sounded. Even more than the stradivarius. That Amazon one sounded horrible. I would skip that all together, even as a total beginner.
Yeah, I couldn't hugely tell much difference with the others, but 2 sounded really bad.. as long as you just don't get the super cheap one, I suspect people are ok
I guessed the cheapest one as well as the $450 one right. I play an instrument that cost 600€, and it sounds a little bit like the Seraphina. I knew that the Stradivari had to be 4 or 5, it sounded a lot better. Number 2 sounded like the violin itself was too heavy and it just didn't respond well.
The problem here is, we, the audience hear the stored digital version of tones through a micro-speaker. All the enriching frequency of the more expensive violins are filtered out. It is worth while to analize the live tones of a Stradivari to the one played back through a computer's micro-speaker first to confirm that what we hear is what you heard!
@@BedziuPolska it depends on what device you're using. Headphones can make it better to make a difference but with digital the nuances of each violin may not come through
this video made me investigate how violins work and, as always, it made me mad how people are not capable to explain the quality of an instrument or gear. amazing video btw
@@TheKb117 In person you probably could tell the difference. Different pieces of music also may bring out the amazing, rich and beautiful tones of a finely crafted, special violin.
I'm not musical at all. I picked #4 as the Stradivarius based solely on your facial expression in the first round. You seemed to be much happier. Did I cheat?
Am not a violin player at all, I play mostly heavy metal on guitar. But even to my untrained ears, No.4 stood head and shoulders above the rest. It makes a single note sound like a chorus of notes at slightly different pitches, with a harmonic resonance that's nothing short of other worldly. Incredible tone!!
The 10 million and the 70 dollar are the two I put as a tie. This is also why I don't buy expensive liquor or wine...I haven't refined myself enough to appreciate it properly
My favorite was the first one. Sometimes violins after so many years and circumstances can be harder to get a very bright sound it's still of course beautiful and not like violin 2 which was my least favorite of the ones you demonstrated. But I don't know I really liked the 10,000 dollar ones sound the best.
I could tell that 4 and 5 were the monstrously expensive ones, and that #2 had insanely cheap strings. But honestly, I didn't mind the sound of #3. I don't care if it's cheap, it sounded good in this setting.
From someone that plays viola and teaches violin, 2 is clearly a cheap violin that sounds muffled and is pretty clearly not made very well. You can also see that the black tuning pegs are very simple and the more expensive violins have more ornamental pegs, they don't do anything sound wise but a well made instrument looks and sounds beautiful. It has four fine tuners where as professional violins and violinist usually have one as they can muffle the sound. You can also see 2 just looks really cheap compared to the rest. There ends my rant, I'd be happy to explain more if you'd like :)
Four and Five sound the best. My nickname for number Four was “The Cannon” because it had the biggest sound. And probably the best articulation of notes. However, number Five has such a beautiful mellow sound.
I found nr 5 to be more agile for some reason. Both sound amazing though! It would have been great if he also tried a Guaneri del Gesu, the ones I have heard sounded better than the strads!
With my phone i could detect the amazon one and the 450 Dollar one - the other 3 were nice and had there strenghts in different songs. Overall I thought the 10000 Dollar one was the best, but only because i didn't like the Stradivari when playing Super Mario.
Fun fact: The real secret why a Stradivari sounds so remarkable is actually the WOOD that they're made from! When he was making his violins, most of the world was going through what's been described as a "mini ice age" where it was so bitterly cold for many decades on end, so things froze up really hard every winter and also MUCH farther south than "normal" as well. Even the River Thames would freeze so completely "solid" people used to have a winter fair/festival ON the river ice! But what's that got to do with the Stradivari right? Because the climate was so damn bitter cold the trees wouldn't grow as fast, making for MUCH smaller, tighter growth rings and EXCEPTIONALLY fine, tight wood grain!
This is ironic because a blind study was done and neither amateur violinists or professionals could accurately tell the difference between a Stradivarius and the other less expensive violins.
@@macgyver5108 I heard an interesting story on National Public Radio (possibly on All Things Considered) some 20 years ago, where a chemist analyzed a piece of wood from a Stradivarius (and I think a section of a Guarnari cello (I hate that my memory is so poor -- and getting worse as I get older). When he put those samples under a microscope, he noticed that the Stradivarius wood grain was "puffier" than other woods on instruments. So he set about analyzing the curing chemicals (and probably processes) used in the Stradivarius. He came up with a formula that closely resembled the Stradivarius formula, then cured the wood with that formula. I do not recall if he built one or two of those instruments, and/or if he had a luthier construct it (I don't think he actually built them). He was a decent violinist, though, so he demonstrated it at a recital. The sound was absolutely AMAZING, even through an FM radio signal such as Minnesota Public Radio's transmission in our area. I really, really wish I knew how to find that story again, because I would love to hear it one more time, and relish the wonderful tone that brand-new violin generated. So besides what you say, I would have to concur with the NPR story, and say that curing may well have had as much to do with the Stradivarius sound as anything else. But your comment is certainly to be noted.
I liked violins 1, 3, 4 and beginning with song no. 2, I also liked violin 5. But it was kind of obvious that the 4th was the Stradivarius as you were smiling, and showing you were honored to play it, especially during songs 1-2.
Thoughts: 1. Junior soloists and orchestral pros 2. Junk 3. Pro folk music fiddler, or classical student grade 4. Strad (silky deep tones) 5. Professional soloist (higher end)
I really laughed at your Nr. 2, that was exactly my reaction too! Actually you can spot a Strad even before the sound, from the unique colour and patina.
You put it more eloquently than me. I thought: nice; eugh! I hope that's not what's considered good; I'm back at school; NIIIIICE; ooo, nice too, but number 4 was so good that number 5 would always be playing second fiddle!
I've been playing almost 60 years, and I would be happy with 1, 4, or 5. Though my preference is actually for the de Matteo; it actually sounds like a Guarneri del Jesu; it's _loud_. Number 3, the Serafina, is strictly a low-cost student instrument, and number 2 is what is known as a "violin-shaped object," and is a waste of firewood. I wouldn't even recommend it to a beginner. It not only sounds muffled, it sounds difficult to play, and will discourage the student. The Strad is nice, though I really don't hear a significant difference between it and the Galliano. To me, they are a toss-up. Might be my aging ears. I rated them Strad, Galliano, de Matteo, Serafina, and eBay in descending order. But the Strad sounded best to me on only two of the three passages. The third passage I chose the Galliano as the better instrument. Go figure.
Exactly. Not watched reveal yet. 2 and 3 sounded off. One four and five sounded nice. maybe liked four the best, hard to be sure and I listened a bunch of times.
Wow. I feel so validated now. Me and my 59-year-old ears, with tinnitus on the right side. I was nursing a question during the video: Could Itzhak Perlman make the $70 violin-shaped object sound like something more?
@@andyharman3022 Perlman could definitely get the most out of it! Perhaps make it sound like a $1000 violin. The bow makes a huge difference as well and if he chose a light and stiff bow for example, that would allow the violin to vibrate more.
I know what you mean about 4 and 5 being a "toss-up". I preferred 5 purely because it had a darker tone. They were both powerful, clear, a little bit beefy, beautiful and rich in timbre (but not too messy with overtones). The Strad, was very focused and possibly it sounds quite "bright" in person. Many microphones don't pick up some of that magic Strad sound.... it gets lost through our speakers unfortunately. The Gagliano had all the qualities I mentioned above for the Strad but personally I found it had more character and almost sang out like a viola at times. If I was offered either of those violins for free and I was a world-class violinist with many concerts ahead of me: I would take the Gagliano! ....with the proviso being that the Strad didn't have a better projection in the concert hall.
It is not better, it is kind of powerful and strong.. The sound "sound" better cause we hear it better.. But the Stradivari is just.. Smooooooth.. If you play violin, you can feel the left hand playing alone by itself.. Right Rob? Good job bro 💪 🎻

Ethan C it was painful to listen to. Like fingernails on a chalk board!
Number 3 was my first pick and the second was the number 4.
Imho it was my personal favourite to listen to.

I liked 2 the best for the first exert lol

I thought 1 and 5 hit the deeper/bass notes in the second test best atleast from the quality from my phone audio
With 4 and 5, you can hear the bow gripping the strings. They have incredible response and crisp, clean start and finish.
exactly, and I am not a violonist. The difference is huge
The Stradivarius is amazing, but my favourite is number 5
By far....

Yeah. No 5 sound better than strad. Just bcoz strad is well known and rare, that makes much more worth.

Exactly! I wanted to write the same!
Agreed. I thought number 2 was the only one that sounded noticeably worse than the rest. I think I would save my $9,999,650 and just get the $450 one. And the average person would never hear the difference.
As a non musician I thought the exact same thing.
я далёк от музыки, но мой выбор аналогичный. Номер 4 близок к номеру 5, но 5 звучит лучше для меня. 2 - ужасен.

@@TitaniumTronic I am the same, I am a respecter of a quality sound though
Same here, that 4 sound immediately distinguished itself gorgeously
4 and 5 are the best obv. To me. It's more a matter of taste which you like
same here
Hi Ania, similar assessment here, I also preferred the brighter tones of 5/Gagliano and would use it to play something like the Sibelius violin concerto, but 4/Strad when I went back and listened and compared just the last 2 violins, the Strad def had some attitude and grit, i can't really explain but it had a unique sound which set it apart from the rest.
Never thought I'd hear Mario played on a 10 million dollar Stradivari.

Wonderful experiment! Musician seems, however, to change his “reverence” as playing different instruments. Hard for him to put his “heart” into playing $70 instrument. Perhaps blindfolded musician handed violins in a random order would result in a “double blind” experiment. ,

Really? I am a social worker and I could tell #2 was the $70 one lol. I did play the violin in middle school if that counts for anything ;)
But do professional musicians have hi end speakers? lol
I don't play violin but guitar, I too almost picked 3. But ended up picking 4. I think 5 is good but overpriced. However, I'm sure the differences between the many $450.00 violins is vast.

I'm not musical at all. I picked #4 as the Stradivarius based solely on your facial expression in the first round. You seemed to be much happier. Did I cheat?
His face gave it away completely, he was having a great time
For me was an insurement of the best
I am a musician and I knew it was either 4 or 5. But the fact that 4 was shiny made me make a final decision.
Am not a violin player at all, I play mostly heavy metal on guitar. But even to my untrained ears, No.4 stood head and shoulders above the rest. It makes a single note sound like a chorus of notes at slightly different pitches, with a harmonic resonance that's nothing short of other worldly. Incredible tone!!
first was good
omg i got it right
You have a musical ears and you can clearly hear sonic differences between instruments.
same i knew 2 was the shit one right away, been looking to get a lefty violin so doing some research atm
I hate that my favorite was the 4th, $10 million!!!
I wouldn’t say 3 is cheap. I’d say it’s “budget” it had a nice sound, but 2 is definitely cheap lol. PS I know nothing about violins lol
@@downdirty304 3 is definitely a very good violin to start out on and is geared towards beginners which kind of where the "budget sound" comes in :)
Four and Five sound the best. My nickname for number Four was “The Cannon” because it had the biggest sound. And probably the best articulation of notes. However, number Five has such a beautiful mellow sound.
Fun fact, Strad are used by solo players because they are very loud.
I found nr 5 to be more agile for some reason. Both sound amazing though! It would have been great if he also tried a Guaneri del Gesu, the ones I have heard sounded better than the strads!
From my phone speaker and without any knowledge about musical instruments: 2 sounds very bad, all others sound fine to me.
With my phone i could detect the amazon one and the 450 Dollar one - the other 3 were nice and had there strenghts in different songs. Overall I thought the 10000 Dollar one was the best, but only because i didn't like the Stradivari when playing Super Mario.
Honestly, the last one sounds richly made.
They also sounded pretty consistent on Megalovania to me but the Stradivari seemed the smoothest on the other two songs.
When he plays a 10 million-dollar violin, you can literally see him smiling. The $70 violin, anguish!!
Yes! That little suppressed grin was a give-away each time (as were the pegs....).
Rob: "it's valued at 10 million dollars and it's totally worth it."
Me: ... k.
Wait, so if we grew trees in a refrigerated chamber we could grow more of the special wood? (hypothetically)
@@homelessperson5455 "hypothetically".
@@snickpickle sounds like a task for Google?
I liked violins 1, 3, 4 and beginning with song no. 2, I also liked violin 5. But it was kind of obvious that the 4th was the Stradivarius as you were smiling, and showing you were honored to play it, especially during songs 1-2.
Thoughts:
1. Junior soloists and orchestral pros
2. Junk
3. Pro folk music fiddler, or classical student grade
4. Strad (silky deep tones)
I already got the 3rd one
I love the word silky
Imagine you accidentally touch one of the violin and the whole shelf containing violins falls down each cost 10M
Yeah, that’d be a nightmare.
Time to sell my house and my body😂
@MAD GAMER you'll have to sell your soul
😂😂😂😭😭😭 That made me laugh but oh man that would be so awful.
@@haleemapm4385 i dont think my soul is worth that much😂
No 4 and 5 had richer tones. I would go with No 5 as the most expensive?
*Edit I was wrong😂 but I really preferred the tone of the Gagliano lol
Same
same here
I can’t believe I picked the Strad! I have no experience with violins but the beauty of this sound is out of the world
His smile gave away the strad. Before he even played.
Go figure.
What Doug said
The fact that the Galliano sounds better than the Strad to me is weird.
It is not better, it is kind of powerful and strong.. The sound "sound" better cause we hear it better.. But the Stradivari is just.. Smooooooth.. If you play violin, you can feel the left hand playing alone by itself.. Right Rob? Good job bro 💪 🎻
Same
Yep i thought the same, its just more rounded and smooth than stradivari one
yeah i guessed that it was the strad
I think so too
Not surprised the learn the 3rd violin was $450. There were 4 fine tuners which is usually used for beginners.
