so i have bipolar 2, and here’s the thing. bipolar disorder (not bpd, that’s borderline personality disorder, which i also deal with) causes mood swings from manic to depressive. manic state makes you feel like you can do anything and nothing is really in your way. most of us know depression, not feeling like even moving because it doesn’t feel worth is. bipolar sends you through both sides at random or can be triggered. bipolar 2 generally lasts for short amount of times, from hours, to days. bipolar 1 can be extreme and last for days, weeks, months. bipolar undiagnosed leads from 2 slowly (not saying it can’t be a quick change, but usually it’s developed) going to 1 and causes major mental problems. also as you can see he’s showing signs of other personality disorders in the movie (sorry, i haven’t read the book).
also, this is just a rundown from somebody with one point of view and one side of a disorder on a spectrum, just like all others. i hope everybody is getting the help they need, it feels a lot better.

Me neither imo. I've never been diagnosed, but I remember a point in my life where I was heavily depressed. And idk how to explain it, but it hurt to breathe sometimes. I'd go to sleep crying. The little thing would set me off and I felt like ended it all. It literally took all I had not to do it. I'd use other ppl as my source of happiness and when they were gone I felt sad again. I'd ignore my problems and be the "counselor" for other ppl while I was hurting. Nobody understood so whenever I tried to talk about it I got the "don't be sad" vibes. Like it's just that simple. On the surface I was just a regular hs kid. Idk if what I said counts as "depression" cuz like I said I've nbr been diagnosed and I'm not about to self diagnose myslef. But ik I felt smth.

i really liked the book bc all throughout finch’s chapters, he references the cardinal that kept flying into his patio until it killed itself and how he blamed his parents for not opening a window to let it in and take care of it. but he says that there was nothing there to make it last, implying that opening a window only drags out an inevitable end to the bird’s life. and i think that perfectly describes what finch thought of his and violet’s relationship; he is the cardinal and she is the open window. she delayed his inevitable end for a bit but he was always meant to die.

@@eatwithfanny6648 There is so many reasons why he did it and the movie does not show any of this well at all. But basically, it is implied in the book that Finch is bi-polar, and Finch is always made fun of in school. He always thinks about death (which they don't show in the movie) and he disappears a lot. The book opens with Finch on the edge of a bell tower getting ready to jump when he sees Violet, who is also thinking about jumping. There are a lot more reasons that he does this, and the book gets more into Finch's perspective and how things kind of went downhill for him. It goes into his family life more, and the things that he thinks about. Like in the lake with Violet, he keeps on swimming down thinking about killing himself and wanting to see the other side, but then he remembers Violet and goes back to the surface. But he did well at covers his feeling from Violet and everyone else as well. It is honestly really hard to explain, and I suggest just reading the book because it is a really great book. You will get a lot of the references that are made in the movie and it will give a lot more depth to the characters and the things that they do and say. As Dylan said, they didn't condense the book well into a movie. But it is worth the read. (I don't want to be that person... but I am that person... the book was better)

Imo they didn't even properly show what depression/being suicidal looks like from the outside. Its often not someone visibly looking sad 24/7 while whispering all their wirds. It often shows up as irritation/anger at the slightest inconvenience. Outbursts of emotion. And yes even laughing too hard, being too cheery at any given moment only to switch into anger/crying the next. The exhaustion she shows is not a bad portrayal imo but it would have made a better movie and been less one-dimensional perspective if they had given the actress some range.

Listening the Dylan talk about this movie made me think of this British flick I came across that Really got depression across for me. It's called Pelican Blood. Quite a few of the story beats are really close to that movie as well... it's a little weird. (What's weirder is that the main character of Pelican Blood straight up is OBSESSED with bird watching and the main character's name for this is Finch... which didn't help making me think this was a thing on its own. I know that's not actually a similarity though.) The main character of Pelican Blood is even OCD so he keeps things super neat. A lot of similarities with that movie, is all I'm saying, but Pelican Blood felt way closer to what depression is actually like.

    • @nyxldx
      @nyxldx 3 роки тому +109

      that's true.
But as someone who has experienced it, I think a lot of movies fail to portray it accurate.
They either make the character all dark and moody or so happy the audience doesn't believe that the character is suffering.
The thing about depression is a lot of people try to appear happy because they don't want to alert or upset they're loved ones. During that stage is when one is looking for something to grasp and not let go
So, someone might _look_ happy but inside they're suffering. In books, it's easier to describe it because you have the benefit of only using words to write a story.
In big screen, it's harder and requires all the team: screenwriter, director, cast etc to be talented and to have a vision

I think he was more commenting on how the movie portrayed Finch as just this troublesome teenager who acted completely psycho sometimes. Like, Dylan wasn't actually trying to say that the character of Finch, who was mentally ill, was "just a psycho at times". He was trying to say that the movie completely butchered his character and his mental illness in such a way that it made him SEEM like he was just a psycho at times as opposed to someone struggling with an untreated mental disorder. It didn't have enough emphasis on his actual mental illness, just on these random, disjointed episodes that were more confusing and weird than accurate or impactful. Like portraying what was meant to be severe depressive/dissociative episodes (that feeling of not feeling awake, of being on autopilot) as just him randomly zoning out sometimes. The movie didn't actually address any of that in a way that connected into a bigger picture of comprehensive mental illness. It just kind of took Finch's mental illness and twisted it into a bunch of random, seemingly impulsive psychotic episodes and behaviors.

@@zombiesinflannels well i just woke up. How can I answer to such a nicely put response. Yeah I know what he meant. The thing is Dylan doesn't realize he was undiagnosed bipolar. Those "dissociative episodes" weren't just dissociative episodes. It was probably him on manic episodes but he never got to know that! And i don't remember well but the book doesn't specify either. Cause that was the point! He didn't need counseling or support and understanding from friends, he needed to go to the psychiatrist to get diagnosed. He was labeled weird and psycho cause no one had an answer for his actions not even himself. Lol i may or may not have commented that in that way cause it makes me mad that people don't realize he was bipolar. And i probably missused Dylan's words because why not. Thats it. The story hits way to close and it makes me mad not many people realize he was undiagnosed bipolar and that killed him. He died not knowing what was happening to him. But ye

finch is bipolar, not simply depressed. the montages were the moments of mania, he was happy, he could function, he was "awake" and in control, and although slightly chaotic and intense, he was there. after the night spent with violet, and how it could easily be almost "ruined" in a way, finch was reminded of how vulnerable and temporary these "happy" moments were. so every day those sticky notes were his reasons to stay present, stay awake, and stay alive. he was flashing in and out of it, as bipolar people do (shown when in the restaurant he would dissociate) but violet could at least bring him back. after that morning, it was like the flip of a switch (again, bipolar! anything can make you manic/depressive, you can literally do a complete emotional 180 in a minute) and finch was in a worse place because he lost his reason to stay awake (violet).
you may think it was dramatic, but its important to remember: 1. hes a teenager, adolescents are more irrational and emotional as a byproduct of hormones, 2. he is bipolar, in the nature of the disorder, emotional extremes and fast changing moods are commonplace, 3. finch had already been struggling, flashing between mania and depression. something like this could definitely tip the scale, as violet had been pulling him out, but the people we love cannot be there to help us all of the time.
i dont think there was a mistake in filming how they did -- showing montages of happiness, and then random bouts of anger, sadness, depression, etc. as someone with bipolar disorder, that is what my life looks like. and we can interpret this mistakenly as a love story, where we should like the couple and ship them together forever, or we can follow the intentions of the movie and novel and understand that this is reality (or supposedly, a depiction of it). for finch, he was fixated on violet, he probably did love her in his own way. we do not need to love violet, we just need to understand that finch loves violet because she is giving him reasons to stay awake at this point. violet loved him because of who he presented himself to be (similar to her, but also a source of happiness) -- she was traumatized, and that lead to her depression, whereas finch is clinically mentally ill (he did have "aggressors" and life factors that contributed to the presentation and intensity of his disease, but despite these, he is sick inherently, as bipolar disorder is not a result of trauma, emotional states, or life events. it is an unchangeable state of being, bipolar people are born bipolar and need diagnosis, treatment, and medication. violet was depressed as a result of a life event, a different kind of "illness" in a sense, but still completely valid and worth talking about). once that fixation was broken, and his reality set in (that this "love" was vulnerable, temporary, and no longer reliable in terms of a reason to stay "awake"), he slipped back into a depression, and he killed himself.
we have to remember, this is not a love story. the book was a million times better, and i related to it so much it is one of my absolute favorites. but the movie i feel, in a much less effective way, tried to capture the true message. it was received as a fucked up love story, rather than what it truly is -- its a glimpse into mental illness, with aspects of our true experience. we want to love, we want to live, but sometimes (a lot of the time) we have to give ourselves reasons to keep going. depression never goes away, we can simply be distracted by it. violet was a distraction (although finch didnt know it), and once the illusion of his mania was shattered, there was no more distraction and he faced his depression. he lost the battle, and although he did have those happy moments and on the outside he didn't "seem THAT depressed", it is the truth of how quickly our mental states can change (especially for bipolar people). you are meant to be shocked, youre not meant to see it coming, because he probably didnt either in his mania. but once it hits, it hits like a truck, and it is not supposed to make sense why. he did because he felt he had to -- the reason is not the falling out with violet. the reason is his mental illness.
this is very long winded and probably no one will read it LOL. but i hope for maybe one or two people that do, it makes more sense why they filmed this way and why they left the end as they did. life for violet will go on, because people can grow and improve past trauma (of course with resources, assistance, etc.). finch did not have this same opportunity, because he also did not know he was bipolar (he did not have access to the resources he needed to cope) and no one else around him knew either. he died, and it is shocking and heartbreaking, but this is not a love story. this is how life goes for some people :/
(i think its important for me to note that my intention is not to illegitimize violets illness. i want to highlight the difference between violet's depression and finches bipolar disorder. depression is a mental state and a result of chemical imbalances, and it needs treatment just as any other mental illness and needs to be taken very very seriously in order to improve. depression can improve over time. in another light, people with bipolar disorder are unaware that they have bipolar disorder until a diagnosis --finch probably thought he was just depressed. but the actual presence of this disorder changes brain chemistry and alters emotional permeance. its difficult to explain, but bipolar disorder is different because without medication and resources, there is no treatment. a sufferer faces all sorts of labels and stigmas for something they do not know they have and probably do not understand. people with bipolar disorder cannot get eliminate their disorder -- it is permanent. it is a matter of managing the symptoms (in terms of regulating emotional states and minimizing both mania and depression). i hope this makes sense, and i do not mean to offend. i appreciate the movie's display of how these illnesses can interact and how they can present differently.)
