foreal! I thought we had another “ides of March” situation on our hands but I think we’re good now that Dylan has finally acknowledged him and he is still alive. 🥸
Quick note: when someone gets kidnapped or something when there’s a press conference they ask parents or whoever is there to say nice things about the victim so it humanizes them to their kidnapper. It’s not very likely to work but it’s still increases the chances of them being found or returned to their family
9:05: About the parents describing Amy in a good way during the press conference: I believe investigators encourage this so that in case the perpetrator is watching, they might be able to sway them or guilting them into either returning the victim, surrendering, or at least make a mistake. Even if it's not the perpetrator directly, the accomplice or a potential witness could be swayed into giving information by humanizing the victim.

My boyfriend in college once tried to help me feel better on a bad day by taking me to the movies, and when we got there we decided to see whatever show was playing next. Neither of us knew anything about this movie aside from the critical acclaim it was receiving and that the director was David Fincher, so we were down. I have to say going into this blind has inspired me to do that more often, because the halfway switch was seriously *amazing* (wink)
The end scene shows he's sleeping with her again-and is comfortable enough to do that now-also I heard that the author will write a sequel from the POV of their kid, 10 years after everything happened
Man I love watching Dylan so much. There's just something about the over-the-top but somehow self-deprecating arrogance and pure dumbassery of this man that just fills me with unending joy
I love how you worded it and completely agree. Also find the audience-Dylan relation endearing, everyone's used to his dumbassery and poking fun at him but they're also sweet and pretty chill. It's a good combo.
This movie was shot in a small town about an hour away from me, I remember when the local news was losing their mind over it... They don't see too many famous people come around so it was a big deal... It was such a big deal that they sold this book everywhere in the town when it was being filmed...
ABSOLUTELY GIVE THE BOOK A TRY!! It fleshes out the characters a LOT more and paints a better picture of who Nick and Amy truly are and why they choose to stay together in the end
Nick's decision to stay with her was just stupid and the only reason I don't blame him for staying with her is the fact that the relationship was toxic and abusive
@@xakirax_8864 in the case of the movie, that’s a very logical conclusion. But, it’s not as simple as that. The book gives us a clearer picture as to who Nick and Amy are and does a MUCH better job at painting them as 3 dimensional characters than the movie does. We sympathise with, or at least understand, Amy and why she is going to the lengths that she is. We see more of Nick’s darker side and how he does, in fact, want to stay with Amy.
@@paigelovette8156 he chooses to stay with Amy because they have sort of become codependent of one another. They know and understand each other in a way that no one else does. And neither of them want to say goodbye to the person that knows them best, even if they hate each other

i've always wanted dylan to react to gone girl but when i knew he doesn't like suggestions, i just waited patiently for this day, and y'all don't even knooow.
You expected him to relate? This concept sounds alien to him because he doesn't relate to this idea and most men don't relate to this because they've not really enforced it.
When at 13:01 you get distracted by the fact that Dylan’s mouth is now blue and then he realizes it a few seconds later 😂 he’s totally still eating the 5lbs of blue sour patch kids he received lol
“Neil Patrick Harris? Tyler Perry?? Carrie Coon??? Yeah I don’t know who that one is.” 😂 I can already tell that this is going to be a great commentary!
It's a marketing strategy... The reoccurring remarks are slowly implanting the idea of it into our heads, so that we'll buy his book when he finally releases it in 30 years.
@rose petal that's an ad hominem falacy. The cool girl monologue was a space for the author to leak her opinions. Not everything bad characters say is wrong. Not everything good characters say is right. And if you don't have the wisdom to tell it apart, then why bother reading books at all?
I believe its Loosely based off the Scott Peterson (I don’t know if that’s his last name but it’s something like that) case. His wife who was 8 months pregnant went missing while “he was fishing”and the body turned up near where he would go fishing. He was also having an affair. This was back in 2002. I believe he’s been convicted of killing her
@@jennagouvin5516 I just read the book and actually wondered about this since the stories are similar, but the author has denied that she based the story on the Laci Peterson case specifically
i remember as a 12 year old how awesome it was for this to be filmed in my town. they shot a scene at the courthouse my dad worked at during the time and i got a selfie with who was just announced to be the next batman. so cool.
It’s ironic how Ben Affleck is such a creepy, likely-to-be-a-murderer type of guy, but plays Bruce Wayne who is literally a vigilante with a no kill code lmao
Not everything in Amy’s journal is a lie. @ the end of the movie when Nick gets angry enough he throws Amy up to the door, HARD. Sure, he was pushed to the limit when he reacted that way…But he is quite capable of hitting Amy. The book gives you a much better idea of what a user Nick was, but basically he drained all of her money, cheated, and most likely also hit her because he did have a temper. Now, none of that means that Amy still isn’t a sociopath. Other incidents in her life support that she is definitely a manipulative and narcissistic person… but Nick was not some innocent, dumb schmuck. He was a POS. Amy has other victims I feel sorry for, not so much him.
I don't know about the book, but in the movie he is one thousand percent justified in shoving Amy against the door. This is a woman he hates, who when he tried to break up with her peacefully resorted to *staging her own murder by him* - intent to ruin him and send him to prison for life, maybe even give him the death penalty - who only relented because he publicly begged her to do so and bowed to her control, and in 'returning' to him framed and murdered *another* innocent man who will now always be known as a kidnapping rapist. This woman then forced herself back into his life, took absolute control, and while he is *still trying to escape from her* she reveals she's gotten herself pregnant with his baby without his consent. She is a rapist and a murderer, and she is effectively holding him hostage. He would be justified in way more than angrily shoving her against the wall once.
@@Thedarkbunnyrabbit the book explains that Nick doesn't love Amy but stays because he can't imagine life without her. So ya, her other victims are way more sympathetic than Nick - Nick is a schmuck.
@@maloneaqua That's how it be sometimes. The book better communicated his flaws. It's much like Secret Smile. The books make it obvious Brendan is gaslighting everyone and killing people because he's crazy, while the adaption (I forget if it's a miniseries or a movie) fails to properly convey that and you're left to wonder if he really is this crazy killer or if he's an unpleasant man that the protagonist has become absolutely fixated on and unfairly framed for murder (she frames him either way, but one is justified and the other isn't)
I think my favorite fact about this book is that the author wrote it like... right after she got married. Can you imagine being her husband?

Ugh, Amy is one of my favorite villains, she just makes my hair stand on end, especially when she plots to frame Desi. Even knowing that she's faking it, seeing her "scream" for help is still gut-wrenching.

Quick note: when someone gets kidnapped or something when there’s a press conference they ask parents or whoever is there to say nice things about the victim so it humanizes them to their kidnapper.
On the press conference nick spoke on the past tense “Amy was...” that is a huge no no in criminal defense! Shows that you already know that she died

Why does that show that you know anything??? TF! You can literally only talk about a missing person in the past
@@iriswaldenburger2315 I think it's cause if the person is missing you don't know it the person is actually dead or not so you use the present tense because you should be hoping that the person is still alive. UA-cam: Is Hello Fresh worth the price?
ABSOLUTELY GIVE THE BOOK A TRY!! It fleshes out the characters a LOT more and paints a better picture of who Nick and Amy truly are and why they choose to stay together in the end
Nick's decision to stay with her was just stupid and the only reason I don't blame him for staying with her is the fact that the relationship was toxic and abusive
Nick won and can see his son but he's trapped forever. They're both fucked and I feel sorry for the kid.
@@scoutpark5230 So from the book, why did Nick choose to stay?
@@paigelovette8156 he chooses to stay with Amy because they have sort of become codependent of one another. They know and understand each other in a way that no one else does. And neither of them want to say goodbye to the person that knows them best, even if they hate each other

The ‘cool girl’ monologue changed my life
Literally! Iconic
@rose petal why
@rose petal That doesn't change the message of the monologue though?
@rose petal amy didn't give any sort of advice on the monologue, she just commented on the cool girl trope
@rose petal that's an ad hominem falacy. The cool girl monologue was a space for the author to leak her opinions. Not everything bad characters say is wrong. Not everything good characters say is right. And if you don't have the wisdom to tell it apart, then why bother reading books at all?
His portrayal in this role reminds me so much of real-life wife murderer/family annihilator, Chris Watts; except Watts actually did it.
I believe its Loosely based off the Scott Peterson (I don’t know if that’s his last name but it’s something like that) case. His wife who was 8 months pregnant went missing while “he was fishing”and the body turned up near where he would go fishing. He was also having an affair. This was back in 2002. I believe he’s been convicted of killing her
@@jennagouvin5516 I just read the book and actually wondered about this since the stories are similar, but the author has denied that she based the story on the Laci Peterson case specifically
i remember as a 12 year old how awesome it was for this to be filmed in my town. they shot a scene at the courthouse my dad worked at during the time and i got a selfie with who was just announced to be the next batman. so cool.

The books make it obvious Brendan is gaslighting everyone and killing people because he's crazy, while the adaption (I forget if it's a miniseries or a movie) fails to properly convey that and you're left to wonder if he really is this crazy killer or if he's an unpleasant man that the protagonist has become absolutely fixated on and unfairly framed for murder (she frames him either way, but one is justified and the other isn't)
.
@@Thedarkbunnyrabbit
I would do a lot more than slam her against the door. A life in jail is better than a life with a sociopath.
