The series has been around since the 80's and there've been so many English dubs throughout the years, it's hard to keep track of them all! Learn all about the rare Harmony Gold dub where Goku was called "Zero", how FUNimation got the license to the show, moved it from Canada to Texas...and how the show wound up BACK in Canada again! In true DBZ-style, this is our longest and most intense episode yet!!

    Ok Kirb I got something for you
    Did you know?
    The Portuguese dub of db and dbz was made without knowing what the characters were saying. The voice actors and the writers had no experience with the japanese language so they would see the episodes and later do their own version ofthe script based on what happened in the anime. This would leave portuguese audiences only knowing the name of one attack, the Kamehameha, since it was the only attack that the voice actors could identify with no problem. The Kamehameha becae a staple in the portuguese dub leading it to be one of the main focuses of the dragonball gt dub intro song here in Portugal.

      @brazilianbastard3992 Рік тому

      They also threw in random obscure references to Portuguese culture at the time, for example whenever one of Babidis bug creatures is shown Goku says; “It’s Ms.Portugal 1997!”

      Toonami dub. Seriously? xD. Technically speaking, the first two seasons that were dubbed by Ocean Productions can be referred to as the FUNimation dub as well. Cuz most of the production of that dub was done by them.

      Yes stole the words right out of my mouth 😂✌️...to me combining the ocean dub with the Funimation dub to me was better because it showed (once again to me) how they got older and their voices changed as they got older...it just fit when I was a kid... before I gotten older and knew about changing voice actors and Dubs I just thought it was natural for the voices to change with age

      That's completely fine, just don't let nostalgia determine quality. I grew up with the original Funi/Toonami dub, it was a big part of my childhood, and yet there's a LOT that I hate about it. Objectively, it's really bad. But it's still mildly enjoyable. Though I'm easily able to get over Colleen Clinkenbeard voicing Gohan and Chris Ayers voicing Frieza, etc.

    Nice video! I'm known among my friends for trawling through IMDb every time I hear a dub voice that sounds the slightest bit familiar (in order to find out where I heard him/her from), so needless to say I love all of the voice acting trivia. There was some stuff that I already knew (like the separate Ocean and Funimation dubs), but most of it was completely new to me.

    • @Kirbopher15
      @Kirbopher15  10 років тому +5

      This was something I only JUST recently got confirmation of, which we cover in Dragon Ball Z PART 2 - Did You Know Voice Acting?
      The scripts for the alternate Canadian dub were the same as the American/FUNimation (NOT written by the Canadian staff who had stuck on board for a while, working remotely) and the fact several of the later characters had such similar voices to the American cast, made it seem like there were some references being played. Most of the actors I reached out to didn't remember, and the history of the series' production is so convoluted, it's hard to pinpoint exact information like this. The clearest answer I got recently was from Scott McNeil, confirming what you've stated here.

      +Nison545 It's not a surprise you would think that. Schemmel's voice makes him sound too Americanized and heroic. But that's not what Goku is about. Nozawa all the way. No voice of Goku even comes close to distinctive as hers. She captures the many aspects of his character and thus it fits him perfectly. She was sanctioned by Akira Toriyama afterall.

      Nah I definitely disagree. The biggest argument I've read is that she's supposed to be sounding high pitched to bring a childlike nature to his voice, but to me it just sounds grating and awful. Not only does it make no sense with how old he's supposed to be, but Goku, Gohan AND Goten sound way too similar.

    Excellent research Chris!! Im very impressed!! Like you I knew this history as well, but had so many fights with funi fans in the past. Thank you for bringing this into light. everything was spot on!! one thing though, when the Ocean cast reprised their roles for the android saga and beyond, they weren't mimicking the funi cast, they only used the exact same script with very minor tweaks. I do agree that the Android/cell saga sounded completely rushed. When they got to the Buu saga , the problem was fixed and the Ocean cast sounded very natural. also the reason for the return of the Ocean dub was because of the huge backlash of the Funi dub when they first aired it. Fans demanded the old cast back. Personally im a fan of the Ocean dub, not only cuz I grew up with it but because their voice acting sounds very natural and professional. Anyway Thanks again Chris. :)

  • @sdzero
    @sdzero 10 років тому +4

    I started watching Dragon Ball 1994 and I really did love the Ocean cast. The only thing that drove me insane was the censoring because of Saban. If Funimation teamed up with Pioneer instead of Saban earlier, Dragon Ball Z would have been much closer to the way it's represented in Japan.
    The first run of VO Funimation did during the Ginyu Force battle was horrible. That was due to the fact that they were mimicking Ocean Groups voices and that made it sound like the show was parodying the original. At the time none of them had much experience voice acting, so there performances were cringe worthy. It took them several episodes to become acceptable. That goes for most voice acting projects though. Actors need some time to get in a that comfortable spot for the characters they're portraying.
    The only thing the video missed was the voice changes that happened in Dragon Ball Z Kai. Most notably the changes for Gohan, Frieza, and Bulma.

    THIS is why I've always preferred to watch Dragonball Z in Japanese. In the 25+ years of the anime, there has been ONE Japanese voice cast with actors that apprize their original roles in games even to this day.
    I hate it when mid series a voice actor changes. This generally _never_ happens in the Japanese versions of any long running series unless the voice actor dies or something. Meanwhile, with a slew of companies and actors, foreign dubs are always inferior.

    I think this video is a little flawed. You mention that the returning Ocean actors were copying the Funimation ones upon returning to their roles. This just isn't true at all. The only thing that was copied was the script but even then certain technique names and pronunciations were changed (such as the US "Instant Transmission" being said as "Instant Translocation" in Canada). The fact that the later Ocean dub features VASTLY different performances to the US counterparts (Hercule, Dabura and Adult Gohan to name a few) proves that you are wrong about this.
    This whole "LOL Ocean copied Funimation" is just blind fanboyism that has unfortunately been misinterpreted as fact.
    One other criticism is the glossing over of the Saban/Funimation departure which actually played a big role in the switching of the casts. Your video makes it seem like Funimation made a conscious decision to split ways and hire their own cast but evidence points otherwise. The fact that they tried to copy the performances of the Ocean cast is a big one.

It's a shame it never caught on then because in my youthful eyes I thought it was amazing, and when a show called 'Dragonball Z' was announced for Cartoon Network, I was ecstatic, and it just so happened to become one of the most popular animes in America.

    I have a funimation subscription, I've watched from dragon ball to dbz within a short time. I totally noticed all the actors changing. I enjoyed the ocean dubs the most, maybe because I heard them first.

    as a Canadian, it was incredibly jarring to start off with the ocean group, being switched over to the Funimation dub, then by the time I got used to that, it switched back to the ocean dub just after the cell games began! I lost my mind then, but since I haven't actually seen an ocean dub since, it's become kind of nostalgic for me now.

    definitely needs a part 2. There's definitely a lot of voice trivia residing in dragonball, especially since the Funimation dub has redone some episodes a couple times plus KAI which had a couple unique changes. consider other shows like Fullmetal Alchemist, Digimon, the Looney Tunes?

    All I could think of seeing these names were "Sweetie Belle's and Babs Seed's dads are Saiyans!". Even Cathy and Scott are in there. And now Krillen is the voice director of MLP. Really makes me hope for a DBZ parody episode.
    Oh god MLP really has invaded everything!
    Also Ocean dub are the best. Brian is the perfect Vegeta, he can't be out-voiced.

    Everything I know is different. I watched the Canadian dub on YTV over and over again. Every time they got to what I thought was the end of the dub at that time, starting over again each time from the beginning. I never once noticed the differences. Up until now, I recognized Sean Schemmel as the best and only Goku. The only think I did notice was the artstyle changes.

    *Just because I was in the original DBZ, doesn't mean I liked it or supported it artistically. We were all frustrated with the old powers that be at Funimation... We did the best we could with DBZ with some really really crappy decisions that were made by people, who in my opinion, not only had zero artistic talent and experience, were also trying to appease american audiences to make money...*
    *Sean "THE MAN!" Schemmel!*
    Let that sink in Dub elitists/Westaboo's. Schemmel and Sabbat are also huge fans of the Japanese version and fanboy over Nozawa and Horikawa whenever they meet them.

      +Negan That's a shame he thinks so lowely of his work there. I know Sean and everyone else had it rough early on trying to voice match the Ocean talent, and it was great when they were allowed to be freed from that requirement. But to hate on the talent because of that seems a bit harsh.

      ***** Tell that to the twits at Toei Animation. Toei remade DBZ in the form of Kai, and just crammed parts of DB into a gay prologue for it. They practically skipped right over DB, because they knew that DBZ was more popular than DB ever was. DB > Kai > original DBZ > DBGT > DBE. DBE was a shitty movie.
