One of my favorite parts about Hyper Dimension was that if Piccolo or Cell successful blocked a big special attack, it'd blow one or both of their arms off, forcing them to quickly regenerate it (it greatly reduced the damage the move dealt but caused them to freeze for a couple seconds during the animation). Or Buu would simply be vaporized and reform.
Except for final bout. Only valuable part of that game was having the newer characters spoiled before gt came out. Wouldve shat my pants as a kid playing it before gt.

Final Bout is actually just as much as a Dragon Ball Z game as Budokai 3 or the Tenkaichi games. In Japan and Europe, it was just called Dragon Ball Final Bout, without the "GT" in its title. Considering that it's filled with mostly Z characters, I don't see why it didn't qualify for more than just an "honorable" mention.
It's nice seeing the evolution of Dragon Ball Z games. I used to buy all the Budokai (non-Tenkaichi) games for my PS2. The new DBZ games all look and feel the same no matter how hard the game developers try. It's not like they can change the story-line but it's still a little disappointing.
Lucky. I'd never heard of most of these games until this retrospective. I'd played Final Bout and Ultimate Battle 22, both of which were awful. Japan got most, if not ALL of the good to great DB/DBZ games. I get why, I'm just saying. Oh well, I prefer Goku's English voice actor over the Japanese one. In japanese, Goku sounds insane, literally. Sounds like an insane lady. I love the DB/DBZ series, but I started out with the Toonami English airing of DBZ. I also read the Cell/Android Saga in Shonen Jump at around that time. It took me a long time to catch up with the series, because I started from near the middle of the Android Saga, and even near the Namek Saga, where Bulma, Krillin, and Gohan were still flying the ship to Namek. I mean, the show kept restarting from the beginning again, and again, so I had quite some time to catch up. But even when I did, they still kept replaying the series from the beginning. So, I stuck to the games instead. Like Budokai, and it's sequels. Still a longtime, hardcore fan of the series, even to this day. Glad to be.
I remember seeing the playstation dbz games as imports in a magazine when dbz was only at the frieza saga on toonami. I freaked out when I saw all the super saiyans lol. Sucks that the US didnt get any of the early games.
AHHHHHH OH MY GOD THANK YOU FOR THIS THANK YOU HAHA YESSSS THESE WERE AWESOME BACK IN THE DAY AND EVEN THE EMULATOR ROMS!! Hands down one of the best videos ive stumbled upon in a while
OMFG Dragon Ball Z The Legend! I remember this game when I was a kid. As a 10 year old playing that game, it was difficult enough to be fun for me and fast-paced looking enough to keep my attention at the time. I loved that game so much, i need to play it again. Thanks for mentioning it in this video Jared
so so so much nostalgia. not just with DBZ or these games which I've played 70% (the whole retrospective) but this series. the one that drew me into ProJared. much love Mr Jared
Shame you didn't talk about Final Bout. I rented it from a Blockbuster when I was a kid and played it a lot. The interesting fact is that Final Bout came out in 1997 only a few months after the Z saga premiered in the US. I literally had no idea who most of the characters were.
Ive still got a DBZ wall scroll that I purchased while in high school in 1998 on my wall at home. :) Getting to watch SUPER weekly was an awesome treat for a fan of over 20 years.
Wow. Doesn't feel like it, does it? Feels like yesterday, or last week or closer to something like last month? Yeah, I get the feeling. The games themselves don't look that way, but have that feeling. But that's also just how good Jared and his videos have been so consistently great over the last 10+ years. This particular DBZ game retrospective was what made me subscribe originally, well, that and the Pocky & Rocky episode with PBG, and the DBZ Sagas episode. After learning him and PBG were close friends, I knew I had to subscribe, and him talking about one of the best anime/manga series of all time, which I loved and grew up with myself, when it was on Toonami, back in 2004. Sorry, went off-track there. But yeah, this was 9 years ago? Geez, time flies, dude.
DarkfoX I enjoyed them both about equialy well dragon ball just a bit more. But they are like compleatly diffrent genre. one is adventure one is action
1. I've heard it called DBZ: Legends more than "The Legend"...any insight there? And that game didn't go "up to" the Buu saga, it completed all of DBZ including the Buu Saga.
Hyper Dimension was amazing. Very deep and unique gameplay. Playing this game into the night, then into the morning, fighting those endless fights, that's my goddamn childhood.
Poop Dick Ouch man. That cuts deep. Also, what did I do? I was simply stating that I'm not old enough to appreciate/understand the old games, and was saying how it's awesome to learn about them. Wasn't trying to insult anybody who is of age/an elder.
Great video! Thank you! DBZ was my first anime and is still my favorite. Say what you will about how lame it is but i don't care! It was really cool seeing a retrospective about the games. The fighting games have really been treated poorly. Even so, the games are fun and there's nothing like battling these classic characters.
Man. The Super Butouden 1 - 3 and Hyper Dimension music takes me back to my 10 year old self. Trying to find ANYTHING Dragonball Z related on my 56k internet connection was a real chore back in the day, but I miss it. Geocities, anyone? Great videos Jared. Keep up the good work.
So awesome to watch someone review these games, props to you Jared. I had the chance to play SB2 & 3 as a kid; the music is amazing and still resounds in my head to these days.
Great video Jared, very informative! Hyper Dimension and Butouden 2 were my personal favorites. I'm glad you made this video, DBZ was THE anime that got me into anime and will always hold special place in my heart and memories.
I remember playing SB2 as a kid (8 years old) all the time with my cousins, since one of them got it straight from Japan for the SNES. I remember mastering the secret code to the point where I could do it 5 times in a row. Good times. Also, I remember playing most of those on the emulator. They were pretty awesome. Especially Hyper Dimension. Though that was my last Dragon Ball Z game I would play until I hit my late high school years.
Let's see. -Better storytelling. -Better atmosphere. -More relevance for each character. -Better action. -Humor. -Better characters. Overall, Dragon Ball is the best part of the franchise.
Holly shit, I was born the same day as the Dragonball anime. I knew I was born a few days after Zelda, and that's why I have a Hylean crest tat, but now this too.
thanx for the trip to memories! those games introduced me to life long friends and helped me grow in the confidence department. Can't wait to see your 2nd entry to this.
Am I the only one who hates Dragon Ball GT: Final Bout? It's not because of my dislike for GT, as there were some episodes I actually liked watching. It was wired, clunky, and just not fun. And the voice acting? Jesus, the voice acting. Me and my sister had some good laugh's because of the voice acting.
DBZ The legend was awesome. I bought it here in Brazil, completely in japanese. We didn't understand shit, but me and my friends played it every single day after school. I still have it, it's a really fun battle system, and i wish there was some kind of sequel.
Correction!! Butoden was revived with a JP exclusive DS fighter called Dragon Ball Kai: Ultimate Butoden. (If it were brought over, it would probably add the Z to the title) It controls largely like the originals, and has some very nice features. One of which appears to be "Model Growth." What I mean is that in the first fight with Raditz, Goku and Piccolo are super scrawny, and in later fights seem to buff up. (Granted this is only speculation, as I have only done the first battle myself.)
Nick Kakyoin I got the gist of it from playing tenkaichi 3. I tried watching it but honestly I cant stand it. Maybe the latter half of it is better but I reached until he got to Master Roshi then after that I gave up.
Minor correction with Hyper Dimension. Clashes on the ground work the way you say but clashes in the air become a weird rock, paper, scissors game where one character goes in to the background and they take turns attacking and defending. The attacker could choose to use three quick ki blasts or one strong one and the defender had to choose to deflect the quick ones or dodge the strong one, then they switch places. The sequence ended when someone got hit with the strong blast.
You know, I think out of all the games mentioned in this video, I've played Hyper Dimension the most. One thing I noticed with that one versus the Butoden games is that the sprites were made to look more different from each other. In the Butoden games, they all assumed the same stances and some of them even looked like the same body with swapped heads. In Hyper Dimension, every character had unique stances and art that went a long way to making them look different from eachother.
Your copy is either an import or pirated. DBZ Legends was available *only* in good old jolly Japan and nowhere else. I lived in Mexico for most of my cheeky childhood and I do remember some bootleg SNES Super Butoden cartridges.
+manuelito1438 Before the TLC Mexico imported a lot of products from Japan directly, which is why DBZ was broadcasted here way before it aired on the US
Man all those games brought back memories. I used to play all the SNES games on my computer with an emulator back when I was like 12. Brought back a ton of nostalgia seeing them again after 13 years.
A friend of min had a modded Playstation and I used to play Dragon Ball Z the Legend. I don't remember too much about it, but I remember it being super fun. Great series so far, Jared.
"DBZ The Legend" to this day is the most accurate DBZ game ever. It captures everything right the gameplay is so good that you totally overlook the graphics...
There was actually another type of struggle system in the hyper dimension game. If two physical attacks connected at the same time while the opponents were in the air, a sort of rock paper scissors mini-game with ki blasts happened, it was pretty cool, but often overlooked because of how difficult it was to trigger
This is well done, and entertaining on a more intellectual level. I like the switch up from complaining comedy to almost a history lesson. I look forward too seeing more of these. But do keep with the other format too Jared. I love what you do.
I've played every single DBZ game in existence thanks to emulation, lol... back in the days that's all I did. I searched every dbz game I could play. I've mostly played Hyper dimension and Legend out of these ones though. Hyper dimension sprites were awesome though for sure.
I think the point of the screen splitting, was because the system probably couldn't handle rendering the environment between where the 2 characters were.
This is an awesome start to an awesome series, I can tell. Dragon Ball Z is one of my favourite anime series, TV series and video game series so I'm glad that this retrospective has begun. Really looking to my personal favourite, Dragon Ball Z: Budokai Tenkaichi 3.
I absolutely love Super Butouden 3. The speed, the special attacks, they really make me feel like I'm playing a DBZ game that actually had EFFORT put into it.
Ah, the days of Toonami after school and DBZ. I remember being a kid and tuning into for the first time. I was like "The heck is this? It's like, a cartoon, but the style is all different?" Then there was fighting, and lots more fighting, and plenty of epic violence. I was like, "Holy crap, I have discovered the greatest thing in the universe!" Aaaand from that point on I had to watch every freaking episode. I remember getting hyped with my friends over the new episode that would be playing. Especially when they played teasers for the upcoming Android saga. And then we found out about Budokai. I didn't know anything about any prior games, so I thought, "A DBZ fighting game? Is this heaven?!" I turn to my Dad, who, wasn't huge into the series but tuned in for the enjoyable fights, and he connected two and two together (Awesome DBZ fights + fighting game = awesome.) and we were like "HELLZ YEAH!" I remember finally getting our copy through the mail, as it was sold out in stores. We had so much fun with that game. Same goes for 2 and 3. Turns out it's had quite the legacy of fighting games. Still, Some great memories come from the Budokai series.
I actually picked up that ultimate battle 22 back in 2003 and you know what I had a lot of fun playing it, in fact it blew my mind. I printed up all the moves and played it at my cousins, I didn't care about whatever minor issues it had, I had never seen dbz in 2d sprites and they really still do look damn fine.
don't really watch jared much anymore but these will always be my favorite videos of his. got me into a lot of fun dbz content
Jared's comeback reminds of DBZ that's why I'm here haha

Clashes on the ground work the way you say but clashes in the air become a weird rock, paper, scissors game where one character goes in to the background and they take turns attacking and defending. The attacker could choose to use three quick ki blasts or one strong one and the defender had to choose to deflect the quick ones or dodge the strong one, then they switch places. The sequence ended when someone got hit with the strong blast.
dbz legends was the best, having a mod ps1 in 1996, played that game to death.
In Hyper Dimension, every character had unique stances and art that went a long way to making them look different from eachother.
never seen in the US DB legend? Im from Mexico and I got it :o
Your copy is either an import or pirated. DBZ Legends was available *only* in good old jolly Japan and nowhere else. I lived in Mexico for most of my cheeky childhood and I do remember some bootleg SNES Super Butoden cartridges.
+manuelito1438 Before the TLC Mexico imported a lot of products from Japan directly, which is why DBZ was broadcasted here way before it aired on the US
AGENTE4777
I never stated otherwise... nor did I contradict what you both said.
i had a copy of that here in new York. Had to get some kinda chip for my Playstation to play it tho
Man all those games brought back memories. I used to play all the SNES games on my computer with an emulator back when I was like 12. Brought back a ton of nostalgia seeing them again after 13 years.
why does nobody ever talk about dragon ball GT... its like it doesnt exist or something :(
Z-Mr Owl because theirs really not much to talk about because it wasn't that popularly and not very long
AR Card well true but doesnt mean it doesnt exist i actually liked it even if it was short
AR Card Well, it does have one kickass soundtrack, so there's something...
okay I will say the soundtrack is good
AR Card i cant beleive im seriosly the only one who likes it not just because of soundtrack
DBZ The Legend was so GOOD. I used to play it all the time. If you never got a chance to get this game as a kid - Hunt it down now. It's so good.
I hate that GT game with a passion. To me it was the worst db game I've ever played.
Even worse than E.T on the Atari?
Reapermaskhybrid DBZ game
Marquess Pearson *DB:P
Marquess Pearson What, you didn't know that E.T was part of Dragon Ball Z's canon? E.T's planet is actually right next to the Tech-Tech planet
Black INK.I.M wait seriously I don't remember that.
Rest in peace Akira Toriyama
Want to hear a joke. Dragon Ball GT
+Andrew D BURNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNN
+Andrew D I actually liked GT :P
+MiningShadow to be fair it was worse than all the others and really detour from the cannon in my point of view
I agree, it was NOTHING compared to Dragon Ball or Dragon Ball Z, but it was a new take on the series and I enjoyed that
+MiningShadow if you like dragon ball I have seen some other good anime with more intense fights and shorter seasons.
You gave me a few games to Let's Play, thanks~
Not to mention you're videos are entertaining as all get out.
A friend of min had a modded Playstation and I used to play Dragon Ball Z the Legend. I don't remember too much about it, but I remember it being super fun. Great series so far, Jared.
I wish there would be more reviews for the anime based games with excellent quality like yours keep up the good work Jared
The series that got me subbed to my all-time favorite youtube channel.
I’m surprised projared hasn’t reach 1 million subs after all these years
This was very well put together and explained. Kudos to you
This is well done, and entertaining on a more intellectual level. I like the switch up from complaining comedy to almost a history lesson. I look forward too seeing more of these. But do keep with the other format too Jared. I love what you do.
If you're able, I think you should do another retrospective on a series you'd like.
Wow to think the dragon ball anime would start on my birthday!
Excellent and informative retrospective. Looking forward to the next part.
These vids are awesome, really brings back my childhood
a series that old and yet kids and men of this generation still watch it
I've played every single DBZ game in existence thanks to emulation, lol... back in the days that's all I did.
I love the Dragon Soul intro music. In fact I have the "dragon Soul!" part as my text ringtone and just hearing that gets me so hype lol.
I was like, "Holy crap, I have discovered the greatest thing in the universe!"
Aaaand from that point on I had to watch every freaking episode.
