Did you know about the voice actors of your favorite Dragon Ball Z characters? Goku's had QUITE a few number of voice actors AND actresses throughout the years...but his Japanese voice has remained the same for well over 20 years. Would you believe that Goku's been played by the same woman who voiced him as a young child ALL this time in Japan? You might even recognize some of the show's Japanese cast if you've played certain video games! You won't believe which super saiyan shares the voice of Captain Falcon in Super Smash Bros.!

Fun fact: Linda Young (original voice of Frieza) is the mother of John Burgmeier (voice of Tenshinhan).
who knew Genkai was Kurama's mom?
Neat
Ryo Horikawa voiced Vegeta and Captain Falcon, huh? That can only mean one thing,
FINAL PAWNCH!!!

As a guy who has experienced the various transitions of the voices of Dragon Ball over the years, I really appreciate this "Did You Know Voice Acting" series you're doing. It really helps educate people on the differences and changes over the years. I started watching Dragon Ball 1995 and forward to DBZ in 1996. I'm kind of a mixed bag when it comes to how it was translated/dubbed for North America.
I really grew to enjoy the Ocean Group actors performances through episodes 1-53, but I disliked the editing and how they couldn't say death/die/kill. When they made the switch to the in house Funimation actors, I was really glad that they weren't restricted by Saban's censoring anymore. BUT another problem that arose was the in-house voice acting performances didn't initially match the quality of the Ocean Group actors. However, over time ( and after many retries of dubbing the series) they managed to make the characters their own. Making the show a much better experience to watch overall. Funimation in-house actors/directors are all experience and comfortable now, making it a much better show.
I still love the Ocean voice actors and prefer watching their run of episodes 1 - 53/ movies 1-3 of DBZ. I'm still a big fan of Scott McNeil, Brian Drummond, the Dobson brothers, Ted Cole, and Saffron Henderson. There's more actors I didn't mention but I've followed Ocean Group through other animes such as Ronin Warriors and the various Gundam series as well. They're just amazing talents overall.
I keep imaging "WHAT IF" Funimation teamed up with Pioneer from the beginning to produce DBZ. If it would've been anything like the first 3 movies dubbed by Ocean we might have had an adaptation closer to Japan's dub from the beginning. Not to mention possibly save Pioneeer as well. RIP Pioneer/Geneon.
Thanks a Million for the videos! :D
Ryo Horikawa, voice of Vegeta and Captain Falcon, also voiced the Japanese version of Dunban from Xenoblade Chronicles (Xenoblade in Japan)
Wait...
Falcon is Vegeta? My favorite Smash character and my favorite DBZ character are voiced by the same person? Dang.
+Sonicfire101 could be why they're both your favorite...? :P
HOLY CRAP!!! Okay I seriously thought I was the only one who noticed the differences in the all the voices of the Son family, but you hit the nail on the head. Extremely impressed with you Chris!!! also Kid goku and kid goten sound very different as well, its why I always loved Nozawa. Also I had know idea Dale Wilson was the Glad guy That's awesome!!
Im kinda curious which dub do you prefer? I prefer Ocean, if you prefer Funi that's cool. :)
"Chewie, activate the hyperdrive, we're locating the dragon balls" - Han Solo
Lol
The voice change for Frieza in Kai was the best change that ever happened to the entirety of Dragon Ball Z.
I know Daisuke Gori (Hercule, King Cold) used to voice Heihachi in Tekken. I also know Ryuzabara Otomo (Dabura) voices Astaroth in Soul Calibur since Soul Calibur 2. Norio Wakamoto (Cell) is currently voicing M. Bison. *Speaking of Nintendo,* I know Laura Bailey (Trunks, Dende, Kid Vegeta) voices Lucina in Fire Emblem. I also know Sean Schemmel (Goku, King Kai, Nail) has voiced Lucario in Mystery of Mew and in Smash Brothers. I know Kyle Hebert (Gohan, Ox King, Narrator) voices Ryu since Street Fighter IV. Also, Travis Willingham (used to voice Cell) voices Guile since Street Fighter IV. Same goes for Shinchiro Miki (Zamasu) has voicing Sagat and Laura Bailey (Trunks, Dende) vocing Chun Li.
This was an impressive video, what makes the fact that the actor who potrayed chewie as a villain further cements star wars into dragon Ball z as Akira Toriyama is a huge fan of star wars and used it as an influence in both dbz and dr. slump. in fact R2 D2 appeared in a chapter of Dr. Slump.
O.O the same voice actor that does Cap Falcon does......YOU JUST BLEW MY MIND!!
Now, Kakarot...feel the strength of my FALCON PUNCH!
I just love your videos! I appreciate the professionalism of "Did you know Gaming", and you're definitely professional as well, but when you're funny like when you whispered "I'm saying Captain Falcon is Vegeta!" I couldn't stop laughing! Since I enjoy learning everything I can about voice acting(Funimation in particular.)your channel is the perfect place for me. Please keep making amazing videos!
"Well over 20 years"
Followed up by 1986. That'd be 33 years here in 2019, sure--its over 20...but saying 'Over 30 years' would've been more accurate. Nozawa is a damn legend, still voicing him.
Another thing to note about Travis Willingham voicing Cell in the recent DBZ games, he also voiced Roy Mustang in the English dub of Fullmetal Alchemist and Relius Clover for the BlazBlue series, starting with Continuum Shift 1 all the way to the most recent entry in the series, Chrono Phantasma.
That's interesting that Masako Nozawa used each different accent on Goku & his Sons.
Definitely can't wait to see the dub for the kai version of the buu arc to see who is still on board and who might have been changed up.
Me too!
"Quite remarkable, wouldn't you agree? HEEHEEHEEHEEHEE"
Oh my god, that laugh is like Snidely fucking Whiplash levels of cartoony.
I got to meet Kent Williams (voice of Doctor Gero) when he taught kabuki theater at my elementary school back in 6th grade
Nice! I hear he's a Pokemon Master.
+Christopher Niosi Really, when I met him all he talked about were his roles in animes but now I wish I could meet him again because of his love for Pokemon
Masako Nozawa is not only Goku but she is also his children and father, and that's bad ass
Oh my god, Vegeta is Captain Falcon! Great Saiyaman finally has a rival!
Did not know that part about Chewbacca. Also, I'm trying to imagine Vegeta saying "FALCON PUNCH!". It would be hilarious if Vegeta made an F-Zero reference in the anime.
go look up any recent video in which Horikawa is asked to say "Falcon punch" and he uses his Vegeta voice.
It's funny how all of Chris Sabat's roles have transferred to Nick Landis in the abridged series.
This is why Ryo Horikawa is one of my fave VAs of all time, Falcon Vegeta!:D
he's also the gentle warrior Andromeda Shun from Saint Seiya. His squadmates share their voices with DBZ characters:
Pegasus Seiya = Yamcha
Dragon Shiryu = Tien
Phoenix Ikki = Captain Ginyu
Cygnus Hyoga I know nobody else he shares his voice with.
Chris Ayres is a much better Freiza, dont get me wrong, love Linda Young, grew up with her as Freiza, but Ayres is much more faithful to what the character is supposed to sound like, which is much scarier and sadistic.
Linda Young was better as Genkai in YYH
Any chance of a Did You Know on One Piece?
unless it ain't really possible...though it'd be awesome to see :3
Hopefully down the line!
Christopher Niosi I'll second that one! I think I recognise Chris Sabat from a FUNimation One Piece behind the scenes video, didn't he the voice for do Roronoa Zoro?
DaGleese Yep, Colleen Clinkenbeard and Eric Vale voice Monkey D. Luffy and Sanji respectively but, lets face it Kirb here would probably make it sound better then I ever could hehe :P
Speaking of One Piece, I'm not sure if it's just me, but I feel like several actors of the english dub (Funimation dub) were also used with DBZ Kai. Especially young Gohan because he sounds a lot like Lophy. (Forgive me if I spelled his name wrong)
General Snivy
*Luffy :)
Indeed, the voices of Vegeta, Future Trunks, Young Gohan, Krillin and Chiatzu are all in One Piece.
Krillin is also Ussop the Sniper
Trunks is Sanji, the Cook
Vegata/Piccolo is Roronoa Zoro
and finally Chhiatzu is Chopper, the talking reindeer doctor.
Masako Nozawa came to this year's Kawaii Kon in Honolulu. And I MISSED IT!! AAAARGH!!!
10 years later we still need a new episode and a comeback
that moment when you realize "THE PRINCE OF ALL SAIYANS" was voiced by the same guy who voiced andromeda shun
To think the same guy yelling big bang attack was yelling nebula chain for someone clad in pink armor. I guess he has some good range eh?
Jeremias de Leon haha.....yeah,the comparison is simply hilarious
I just can't get past the Vegeta = Captain Falcon bit.
KAKAROT. SHOW ME YOUR MOVES.
Speaking of which:
In the Spanish Latin dub, Hyoga and Vegeta are voiced by the same person.
ikr, Shun, Vegeta, Captain Falcon, and even Kenshiro (albeit in a flashback to when Ken was 12)
Peter Mayhew is in DBZ...You just know that knowledge is going to come in handy someday during a round of six-degrees-of-separation from Kevin Bacon.
Considering how hammy Captain Falcon's voice is, I actually don't find it remotely surprising that he shares a seiyu with Vegeta(I'd be less surprised if it was Domon Kasshu's but Ryō was in a completely different gundam role)....I find it kind of amusing I guess, but not really. What's really funny is his Power Stone role in comparison to Captain Falcon.
I may not be a big fan of goku being voiced by a lady but what is now 29 years is quite impressive.
Chewbacca in Dragon Ball...This has been a good day.
,but Chris did you know that song in the background from DBZ Budokai is actually stolen from a Finnish band Stratovarius called Hunting High and Low?
4:42 Dameon Clarke
4:57 Travis Willingham
Ryo Horikawa was Dunban in Xenoblade Chronicles, Pippin in the Japanese dub of the Lord of the Rings films, young Kenshiro in Fist of the North Star, and Shun from Saint Seiya.
It's amazing how the Japanese version can maintain the same voice actors for years while in the English version has so many voice actors for any one character.
Probably because America is one of the most regionalized countries... We pick up on voices and accents more than most.
Thanks for making all these voice acting fact videos. It's really interesting.
I missed Stephanie Nadolny as Gohan in Kai, her voice was perfect for Gohan IMO.
I...did not realize the vast majority of this. Thanks for the informative and entertaining video! It would have been very easy to present this as a vlog or text/data dump but there is a decent amount of production here. The extra effort is noticed and greatly appreciated!
WOW I did not know about that Peter Mayhew, great vid as always...'Noah'. ;) :D
Gotta say I really enjoy these videos, keep up the good work I can't wait for more.
Tom and Jerry is a small part of the DBZ universe as well, as Scott McNeil, the Canadian actor for Piccolo, voiced Jerry's Uncle Pecos and Don Brown, Canada's King Kai and Garlic Jr, voiced Tom in Tom and Jerry Tales.
All of a sudden, that moment where Vegeta punches the Punching Machine just got a whole lot funnier.
wow, i just noticed that TFS did, like a perfect impersonation of Dameon Clarke's imperfect Cell
+awesomon Honestly, some of the VAs they use for TFS DBA are better than the original or on the same level. If the day comes where they do a straight up remake of DBZ, animation and all, whoever does Vegeta in DBA should be Vegeta because he is fucking nailing that role.
+Cody Peeler i agree
I wasn't expecting the fact that guy who voiced captain falcon also voiced vegeta :P
mmmmm interesting :3
Great video. I must say I have so much respect for the original voice actors especially noawza and the woman who voices kuririn (I forget her name).
You mean Mayumi Tanaka, also known for her roles as Rock Volnutt and Monkey D. Luffy?
Vegeta is Captain Falcon, my life is complete.
Anybody else imagine Chewbacca as a DBZ character?
I mean it’s not surprising when you think about how flashy Vegeta and Falcon are...
Masako nozawa is the best Japanese voice actor's ever! Lol I feel bad for making fun of the original dub now...
I will now refer to captain falcon as captain bejita
Vegeta is Captain Falcon?
Or Captain Falcon is Vegeta?
GALICK PUNCH!
R.I.P. Peter Mayhew.
Funny thing is I don't understand Japanese yet I did somehow notice the different voices for goku, gohan, and goten
That last fact....my world is now complete...
Vegeta, what did Captain Falcon say about his falcon punche's power level?
it's over 9000!
I know this gos without saying but are doing an awesome job with this series ! Keep it up !
Your videos are pretty good, And I never knew sabat voiced Kami and Yamcha
And that's the story when Chewbacca finally became a Z-Fighter and a Smugglers Friend...
DAMEON CLARKE😍THANK YOU FOR VOICING MY BOI!
I'm a big fan of the Japanese original voices of DB/Z/GT, so iv'e lernd alot from your videos about the English dub.
thnx!
When one of my friends said Japanese voice acting is better I facepalmed -_-
He doesn't even speak the language so I doubt he can notice the different dialects and then he said it's more uncensored than the English dub -_- take away the subtitles and you have no idea if they're cursing or not.
It seems mores American people are fans of the Japanese version that Japanese people themselves >.>
While Dragon Ball Z is probably the only Dubbed version of an anime that I like, most people prefer Japanese voices, myself included, for many things because the actual animation is made in tune with the original voices, there's always going to be mistakes with dub because it wasn't originally made with their voices.
Second of all, it's because it feels a lot more natural, Amercian voices in their over-exaggerated tones completely butcher Japanese names to a degree that makes me fucking cringe, it's just wrong.
"Most people like Anime in Japanese"
That's very subjective.
"Over exaggerated voices"
You'd have a point, if this was the 90's.
And I'm pretty sure some anime make mistakes.
Take a look at a video of Frieza killing Krillin in Japanese. There was one awful part where the mouth movements don't match at all when he laughs. And in DBZ Kai imo it looks much better because instead of laughing Frieza says "Hope you're not afraid of heights."
But the mouth movement thing is just nitpicking. It's not like in DBZ ultimate tenkaichi cutescenes where the voices didn't catch up with the mouth movements.
By most people, I meant most people who enjoy it in Japanese.
And I still do have a point, I never said that the Japanese was flawless in any way, it certainly has its drawbacks like anything, I'm just telling you that it has less of them in comparison to the English dub.
Dragon Ball Z is probably the only anime that is better with English Dub because the names are quite ridiculous, therefore they can't really butcher the proper way names are said, and because I'm biased in that I grew up listening to the voices.
It's really, really not nitpicking, unsynchronised voice to animation is just sloppy, and also extremely distracting, if your satisfied with watching movies, tv shows or whatnot that have this problem then good for you, I'm just saying that the Dub, in most cases, sounds like shit.
My evidence? Excluding nearly every dub in existence, try Blue Exorcist's Rin vs Anamenmon or something, listen to that pronunciation of "Okomura" and tell me you don't cringe.
A good example of what I think of Dub is actually easily explainable, imagine something popular nowadays on in western TV's, "Game of Thrones" or "The Walking Dead" and imagine Japan taking these shows on to their tv, which they do, and dubbing over the shows with Japanese voice actors, which they also do.
Not only is it sloppy, it's also annoying to watch and listen too, it just doesn't, in most cases, match up to the original.
Well shit, going by that logic I guess I can say most people like English dub.
Lol Let's just agree to disagree. And yeah I guess pronunciation can suck ass in english dub but nowadays animes in English are doing a lot better
Personal preferences, I honestly never liked American Vegeta.
Hikaru Midorikawa also voiced Heero Yuy from Gundam Wing
5:10 its rather difficult to hear the difference id say... EVEN knowing 2 of willinghams other roles, he does a good job imitating clarke.
Leon voices Android 16? Goddamn that guy has a versatile voice.
i was always a fan of the japanese dub just cause of the fact i grew up on it,
...wow. I didn't know that last bit. o_o
I'd love to see you do some really unique games, like xenoblade, or maybe something from the bioshock series.
You used this remix!! YES!!!!!!!!!!
Here's a fun fact Linda Young the voice of Frieza is the mother of John Burgmeier the voice of Tien
+Denny Truong Mind blown!
I knew that, Linda Young is also the best Genkai in Yu Yu Hakusho. Also for Frieza second best compared to the Canadian original, she beats the current guy who plays Frieza, and that is simply saying something. Still a winner in DBZ.
Smalltummywonderful Well, I actually really like Greg Ayres, he's a lot closer to how Frieza should sound. Linda Young was good at sounding like Pauline Newstone, but she detorited in performance during the uncut dub.
+JCBro2014 I am perfectly content with that, I can accept that opinion with open arms. Still it is quite interesting how in Abridged they do it right, and Agree doing makes it all the more easier to accept.
Denny Truong Whaaaaaaaaaaat
Fun Fact: Takeshi Kusao was the first voice of Sonic the Hedgehog, first in Japanese.
Always Knew C.Falcon was a super Saiyan.
Banber 2000 Yeah, his falcon punch always had a power of over 9000
Now while I still think that Goku in the english dub sounds better than the japanese, I still have to give credit to Ms. Nozawa for her voice work for all those years.
I think Kai messed up Trunk's voice delivery as opposed to the original dub. He sounds a lot ruder and gruffer than he should have. His normal softer voice pre-kai was more accurate.
Chewbacca as a part of the DB universe? ...I find that kinda awesome actually.
Sabat is my favorite Dubbed VA :D Also played the first dbz budokai game in original japanese so i loved the vegeta voices in that. Also clinkenbeard is my favorite female va
think its kinda cool how the voice actor of android 18 LOOKS EXACLY like android 18 lol
Okay, I _watched_ that godawful _GT_ movie and didn't know that Peter Mayhew was in it.
In my opinion, Schemmel has the voice of the hero while Nozawa has the voice of the innocent. If you watch the Japanese dub, you will see that and understand why Nozawa MUST be Goku in that dub.
I do but for z I have to say Sean Schemmel fits the role better because z is to serious
Haha, Vegeta Punch!!!!
So Kai stayed true to the characters's Japanese personalities?
I love your series.
That Tatum pic, man… hell of a thing.
Is the Budokai ost available in 8-bit? That's awesome!
So, I've always called him Yan-Lee, the English voice actors of Dead or Alive 5 call him Jan-Lee, and this video calls him Han-Lee... dang.
Ryo Horikawa also voiced Lando Calrissian in the Japanese dub of Empire Strikes Back
Did you know that Ryo-sama also voice Henry in the Japanese dub of Thomas the Tank Engine from Season 1-8
Mavis in season 5 and also Oliver
Ah jeez, Vegeta and Captain Falcon share the same Japanese voice actor? If this information doesn't lead to a new variation of that damn Falcon Punch meme I'll be very disappointed.
Oh wait this video came out two months ago.....dammit.....
I hate how the Funimation dub doesn't match the original JP audio (except for Goku and his family tree). I still like the Funi. dub though
Carlo Nassar they never will
So I guess Toriyama-san was a big Star Wars fan.
I wish you had shown Frieza's japanese voice... but still, CAPTAIN FALCON IS VEGETA?! holy shit, Vegeta just got cooler, I didn't think that would be possible!
Dale Wilson's laugh seems very familiar. Does he also happen to be the voice of Tarantulas from Beast Wars?
Nope, that's Alec Willows! He voiced Oolong and Burter in the first couple seasons of DBZ's Ocean dub.
Does nobody remember that Dameon Clarke was also Future Gohan! I think his Future Gohan is so much better than Kyle Herbert, nothing against Kyle though.
Speaking of Kyle, I found out that he's going to be a guest at a convention in my city this June!
Dameon Clarke gets my vote because of Younger Toguro in Yu Yu Hakusho.
I'mAlex cause for some reason, Kyle Herbert replaced him in the Budokai Tenkaichi games.
I'mAlex that moment when Ocean Durb Frieza and Blacknarachnia share the same voice actress 🤓
16 bit budokai ost? nice
Ocean Piccolo and Vegeta were better than the Funimation dub. Ocean got bad after Freeza saga though.
Vegeta and Caption falcon
BADASS PAWNCH
So when are you going to mention Team Four Star? They not be official but they are so damn popular that their VA have been brought into the video games Xenoverse 1 & 2. How can you not mention them? Especially because I think due to their ongoing dub work with DBZ its brought in new fans and keeps older fans hyped about whats to come.
Xenoverse 2 existed 6 years ago? Jesus.
Man, I've got to learn japanese so i can pick up on the subtle accents that they put on some of the characters. I always wondered why Freezer sounded kind of british. Maybe that's why Jeice sounds kind of Australian in the Funi Dub O_o
No actually Jeice's voice was simply Scott McNiel having fun giving him a Scouse accent (a reference to a "Red Dwarf" character. Get it? Jeice is a red dwarf) - Sabat couldn't imitate that accent, so to make up for it he simply did an Australian one, as it was close enough to where most kids didn't notice.
Christopher Niosi wow "red dwarf." That reference makes sense but it's so out there. I wonder how many people caught that joke (I actually had to look it up :P
It only occurred to me recently when Scott was doing an impression of one of the characters from the show (I forget the name) and put two and two together.
***** Heres at least one. Ive got that book on my shelf.
THE 9001 FALCON PUNCH IS REAL
