Why are Experts so often poor Communicators? This is a video about Charlatans and Gurus. I share a 2x2 matrix looking at the 4 types of skill/communication ability. I also discuss the idea of "craftsmanship" - where one person does all of the parts of a job from idea to execution and the special type of innovation that can come when one single individual understand how all the elements of the work flow together.
There are 2 types of teachers - a) the teacher who is great at teaching beginners, b) the teacher who is a guide for advanced students and experts. A great "beginner teacher" is often not a great "advanced teacher".

This was fantastic Conor. The concept of artistry and craftsmanship is fading away, and the reason is simple, to become good at something one needs to invest time, effort and have patience. In a time of instant gratification, this its increasingly more difficult to find people that understand the value of the best at what you do as opposed to the best at what you say you do.

I love the excellent work you're doing, thank you. I am a poor communicator and so bad doing presentations, let alone speaking in front of an audience. I get uncontrollably nervous that I forget the words I need to say despite all my preparation.

Just what I needed to hear. The point of the matrix and the art of craftsmanship. Perfectly inspired to start a new journey in my life. Brought in clarity where I had been confused on both these aspects. What it takes to inspire the beginners and guide the seniors, the sense or the lack of it in the art of craftsmanship in today's age of specialization.

I still remember your first video I saw (your Ted Talk about Mashmallow, Descipline of execution. "Who will you bet on?"). I've watched that talk to many times to count and I use the principles you taught there every single day. Many videos later, I'm still glad I met you. If you are wondering what's got me glued, it's because i identified myself as a #2 sometimes ago. I know in some videos you talked about the steps to #3/#4 (Record yourself speak everyday with your laptop's camera etc.)
Please give us more on the practical steps and how to measure progress. I hope I'm not asking for too much. Thanks alot Conor.

Hello Conor. I've been following you quite long. You have a very good videos. I'm 40 y old business administration bachelor holding a CFO position. I've tried to follow the different advises you tell, about communication, how to lead. This in particular made me think about how far I'm from the 4s at this matrix you described, at this point I'm feeling as 2, working on me in order to become as fast as I can into 4. Interesting... At the moment I'm definitely #2, often still think I am not good enough and improve my skill even further. I am going to use your advise. I love the craftmanship part too, I am like that, but being a craftsman takes a lot of time, though very very 'leerzaam' - learnful (Dutch-English, I feel like the Dutch language supports the craftmanship from its roots). Quite informative speech content, Conor Neill! So thank you for sharing in such a vividly clarified manner. Btw, it should be noted that everyone is a teacher to some extent as they tend to convey some knowledge regarding any physical matters or abstract notions, and there are those who does this professionally. Also, there is a third group of teachers who perceive this profession is a calling and only this category can have a genuine competence in their domain. What is interesting these experts could have poor communicative skill which keeps them in shade of those who blindeningly show off their high communicative ability with no profound expertise.

Great explanation and at the same time there are so many factors and cultural aspects, job level that hinders communication and there are extroverts but younger employees who are good on communication . so to come to a decision strategy on actions required in categorizing employees, i would go by age , experience , position level , function they are into as well as opportunities provided to younger employees as part of motivation.

Thank you Conor for sharing great insight on diferent group of people their learning and related communication skills. High introversion can also be a reason on being Category 2 people of not being and a powerful communicator oftentimes. Category 3 people are more successful in careers related to high marketing, theater and media. I often think an element of associating willing suspension of disbelief in learning something new and innovative with aid of arts and theater will actually broaden the ability of Category 2 people on to the next level. It will also help them to see things between the lines and not being manipulated by orchestration of fake news without substantial evidence. Your advice and videos are always thought provoking. Keep up the great work ☺🌠👍

Dear Mr. Conor Neil,
Your videos have been a true source of inspiration for me, to learn more about where I am lacking... in skill and in attitude. Craftsmanship is a theory I have admired and tried to establish for myself to become an expert and tell my own story, especially when looking for jobs. Unfortunately, people who are not forward looking, dont get that concept, (and I am not saying this is as a critique on your video). Most managers, atleast in the tech industry, look for master of one, instead of someone having a holistic view/knowledge, to fill gaps in their teams. I sincerely hope craftsmanship is more valued in the future.

As I'm Irish I think I was naturally born into #3 but I am working to get to #2 to get up to #4! I remember a Tony Robbins event in Dublin a while back where most of the EO members were in the lobby half way through having had enough of the ra-ra loud music stuff! The craftsman idea is interesting, will go back and watch Rich's video. Would love to meet up for a coffee in Frankfurt at GSEA/GLC if you have time.

I work permanently on content and presentation. #4 is a never ending point that I achive once and stay there for ever :)
I worked with tony behind the scene too (unleash the power within and business mastery) and for me he is an expert on selling, and this was why I worked there. to learn what he is an expert in but is not teaching :)
I experienced too. most of people there in the room are, as you say, beginners in selfdevelopment and sales.
by the way, did you consider to improve the voice recrding for your videos? celphone microphones work really well for me.

Great points and insight. The only area I would challenge is in the area of quadrant 3. If someone is a real expert in what they do, but not a good communicator, I usually shy away from these people in business. Part of actually being an expert (in my opinion) is through effective communication. An expert without the ability to communicate effectively, transparently and quickly is only going to be annoying to work with. This annoyance is going to overshadow their expertise, at least in the long run. I usually only work well with people in quadrant 4. Just my opinion, but the majority of "experts" are in quadrant two or three, not very many are in four. I find this, especially, in the professions such as Medical Practitioners and CPAs. Just my take for what it is worth! In addition, I find it to be comical that there is ageism in the workplace, since most of the people that are in quadrant four are the more older and seasoned individuals. The problem is that these individuals get frustrated working with individuals in the other quadrants and find solace in retiring.
Fully agree, #3 overpasses #2 when it comes to marketing oneself especially in promotions and recruitments. World full of actors.

It's hard to believe this video had so few hits in over three and half years. Actually this is totally what I was looking for, which I wasn't sure I'm looking for, and I just saw it :)) And also very few comments considering the knowledge being shared. Maybe it's natural, because 2s and 4s are rare people who likes to solve the problems, by not seeing the problems as trouble, but seeing them as the path to understand the way how universe works. 3s are everywhere, when Mr. Neill was talking I was checking my self if I'm one of them, too... There's also an interesting situation, being en expert doesn't mean being perfect, isn't it? Life is way more wider than a profession or expertise. So, in different situations everyone can become no. 1, no. 2, no. 3 or no. 4. This was a great lecture to make you feel more confident about being yourself, if you are a seeker. On the other hand if you are looking for a knowledge gives you a constant calm, after the video, you may meet a different world which abuses you by not showing the perfect examples all the time. :) Thank you very much sir for this insightful video. Great V Blog again Conor, Love it , it takes both Character & Competence to have long term effectiveness/ success and Comm's is the most important skill in life and like any skill can be taught & learnt , but Re Tony Robbins he can flex his style he is very different in BIG Crowd as opposed to 121 and the guy who left may have seen it as Hype and I agree the long term sustainable change may be difficult to measure but thats where we need accountability and coaches and mentors (guys like you) to continue the journey . Don't write Tony off is the teaching of Experts as his fee may be the BIG barrier but he can do it and does it many time over Love & Hugs Jim

Thank you Conor, that was great. I was wondering if could please talk about effective or High Impact communication tools (Dynamic - interactive tools), I have seen so many speakers and teachers, handling very interesting topics, sharing valuable information, but, failing in the delivery, because of the structure (either poor or extremely complex) or/and a lack of "marketing skills" (They are not able to make an attractive presentation, speech, sale...). Even highly skilled experts with a really exiting topic, some times over-deliver information hard to digest, instead of using a simple picture, graphic or a related example... Some times the resources they use are just too plain, so the audience falls asleep...
I just amaze to realizing your worth to inspire me.Every one is expert in their fields so that time I am #4 strong (strength) but (weaknesses)out of my comfort zone its feel like #2 and for the duration of desire,pursuing,accomplishment it's #3 for me(until achievement).

The accumulation of wealth is inevitably accompanied by specialization in production and diversification in consumption. The paradox is that if everyone were a craftsman, as you suggest we should aspire to be, everyone would be poorer-as it was in times gone by. Wealth arises through division of labour and trade, as Smith recognized so well. It seems to me that the privilege of becoming a craftsman is reserved for those among us who can rely upon others to specialize in their production. This specialization simultaneously furnishes the craftsman with cheap tools and creates a pool of customers that is sufficiently wealthy to purchase the fruits of the craftsman’s labour, which would necessarily be more expensive.

Your best and most useful video. A majority of the professors, engineers and Businessmen fall in this category. In other words most of the human population fall in the second group. They are highly skilled but not communicator

Great, in Poland, where I'm from, there is a lot of 3's. The Soft skills education market is really infected by unauthorized "trainers".
I got a question - how is it possible to learn from you while not being an IESE student? Do you organize open training or some T4T's? I'm a young trainer (Public Speaking | Communication) from Poland who wants to move to Barcelona (I know IESE is partly there) and I really need to upgrade my skills as I want to develop constantly.

There should be a fourth dimension (X,Y, & Z). The Z dimension is one where the units are based on a subconscious ability at finding patterns to problem solution(s). These are people that create new scientific discoveries, where others tweak existing idea's.
I am still nervous and afraid on public speaking and presentation. I don't know how to get rid off. My last two presentation were totally flop. I need to be success on my next presentation. But I didn't know how.😌 I have deep knowledge of my work but I don't know how to present to my colleagues particularly in front of the experts.
Hello Mr Connor, I have just enrolled on a business management university in UK to study, first of all i want to say i love your work and it doesn`t really matter what you say, you are captivating to listen and watch at the same time.
I find myself in the category one or two because im not aware what skills i have or if i have any, im so bad at communicating and with more than one people that when the moment came for me to speak and introduce myself and say few words in front of the group, i had a massive overthinking and a million thoughts in my head seconds before i speak, when i open my mouth to speak my voice was shaking, im also bad at acting so i guess when i practice my talking i have to "play a role" as in act as someone else perhaps ? What else beside recording myself on webcam for 3 minutes i can do in order to not be anxious?
Anxious is a sign that you care - the challenge is not to be less anxious but to only speak about things that are so important that it’s worth the pain

You know, effective communication skills overtake who has greatest skills. Its painful to communicate with others to make others understand. You know communication skilled person big promotions the tech skilled person. Its my personal experience in 20-years of my professional experience. Some times I am thinking to resign and develop new skill for self sufficiency
Or find a context that values tech skills over comm skills... you can’t communicate your way to chess GM rating, you can’t comm your way to Olympic medals... the more obvious competence is, the more valuable it becomes

Thank you for this and all your videos, Connor. I've been digesting them one at a time and trying to see where I'm failing...or if the problem is something else. My fundamental question is when do you know if it's a communication problem, or if the thing you are trying to sell is just too big and transformative that even the best presenter could not sell it? I have developed and modeled - over 3,000 hours (the "expert" part) a new kind of building. The building would straddle a major river, the East River in NYC and house or provide workspaces for over 20,000 people. Here is an article in the Broadsheet about it, with a link to a 3-minute UA-cam video: bit.ly/BroadsheetRA1. My few partners (which includes 2 developers, 2 architects, an engineer, a lawyer) and I have been trying to sell the building to bigger developers, investors, Electeds, for nearly 2 years now, but have not gotten beyond a couple of supportive letters and some "Let us know how it goes" neutral responses. My Developer partner with 35 years experience says I am presenting too much detail, but this is partly in response to previous presentations where questions have arisen that I then went back to answer in my, now, 67-slide presentation; it was only 29 slides when I presented it to AECOM at the beginning, and that actually got a more positive response. How do I know what I'm doing wrong, or if a $20.4b project (ROI $28.1b when all 7,630 condos are sold) is just too big a leap for the people I need to persuade to make? No one gives you feedback, you just don't get your emails/calls returned.

The content of this particular video might not apply to me because I learn political facts and ideas and then communicate them to others. It's not a skill as such but it's important to wake people up about the danger we're all in from the billionaires behind the EU, UN and the World Health Organisation who are using covid to implement Agenda 21 and to cover for the lethal effects of the military weapon 5G.
