  • This video is about two modes of approaching life - Freedom from or Freedom to; and Choice or Decision... A life lived in Freedom From and Decision will be a life that collects fear... Anxiety is unprocessed fear.

Thank You Conor! There is a lot to think. What especially stopped me was the thought: anxiety is unprocessed fear.. i started to think how many unprocessed feelings and matters people have... matters they/we push down... matters in our lives we don't allow to be part of us... I have to think more

As a teenager I have a lot of fears such as relationships, loss of job , loss of income , I couldn't choose which job I should choose , no matter what decision I take today I am always in fear . Fear is ruining my life. Any business idea I think of I fear technology is going to displace tommorow fear was ruining me during covid outbreak and now after listening to sir I am at ease.my heart and mind are calm

Thanks Conor. I think this speaks to the concept of extreme ownership. We will tilt the odds of success in our favor by relentlessly pursuing the choice we make. Or is it something more spiritual like following our gut instinct - something that we cannot articulate or justify through logic alone. I read somewhere that usually there is no right decision - instead life is all about putting our energy into making the best out of whatever situation arises after we have made our decision.

A great insight! I feel like stuck on where to put my time and effort to after losing the job. To look for another job, or starting my own business? I keep thinking of the poem by Robert Frost “ The Road Not Taken” I am so scared to pick up the wrong way and miss the good one.

    So many take aways.
'freedom from vs freedom to', 'choice vs decision' and the definition of anxiety as an unprocessed fear as a result of not accepting things as they are. Thanks a lot @Conor Neill for sharing these thought provoking ideas.
I have one question though. Can we make choices instead of decisions in the business world if you are not an owner of a company?

I particularly like the anecdote about the founder of Tata. The fear I have of making the wrong decisions often leads to procrastination. It rings true to me that if I was to go with my gut, the decision would likely be the "right" one - providing I put in the graft of course.

I was reminded of Jinnah's quote "I don't make the right decision, I take a decision and make it right.!.. The belief and confidence in yourself that you have the ability to overcome every obstacle... The amount of effort poured into making 'The choice' a right decision ultimately proves that it was the best choice that could have been made...

Good evening Professor. Nice to see you back since August 2020. Listening to your conversation on various topics has always been a great learning for me. I do admit that I did not make much decision on how to live qualitative life post superannuation from the organisation I had worked with and was completely aligned to the vision and goals of the Organisation that has helped me to perform very well. However, I seriously missed to take decisions on my productive engagement post retirement. Thank you so much for your wonderful advise and I am sure I will figure it out the right course of decision which will enable me to remain more productive than yesterday. Thank you so much sir. Look forward to hear from you every now and then. With warm Regards. Jagannath.

I loved this video. Lately I have been exploring stoic philosophy and some of your videos showed in my UA-cam feed. I watched several of your videos, but this was the one which made me subscribe to your channel.
Regarding “Choosing” vs “Making a decision” the path one follows becomes material when the time horizon is long enough or the stakes for your inner self are big. For a shorter time horizon (6 to 8 months). I would make a measured decision. For anything longer than that I hope that I have the courage to “Choose”.
Thank you for putting your thoughts out there, and creating this channel.

Superb. You are a gem. May God Bless you.
It surely clarifies that some times the choice you make is not apparantly the best in terms of worldly gains or success per se and it may look like a failure to some but you know in your heart that it was the difficult but the right choice you made and only you and your Creator Knows about it so you go on satisfied with your life.
Though it is a continous battle to keep your self reminding all this and here people like yourself who are larger than life play a key role of righteousness and right leadership without any personal interests
Again may God Almighty Bless you more and Guide us all.

Hello Conor. Very interesting reflections on the distinction between decision und choice. Allow me to add something to this topic which I heard on a discussion from Vera Birkenbihl. When it comes to decisions there are also some cultural aspects that you might consider. You as an English speaking person take decisions like the French and Italian would do ( prendere una decisione). Whereas Turkish people give decisions ( karar vermek) and Germans hit decisions ( Entscheidungen treffen). Whether you take, give or hit a decision makes a significant psychological difference. For instance when I hit something I really want to make sure that I hit the mark whereas you want to make sure that you make the right choice before you take decision. How do you take decisions in Spanish? Kind regards from Germany

Not really an effect of deciding or choosing but we are rarely able to actually "decide" as many of the facts are actually just assumptions and the result of that, so that base of bullet points is rarely that solid. So that path may not be as clear as it seems. If you wholly commit emotionally it gives you a better chance.
