  • How to fix a fuel tank leaking gasoline on a 2015-2020 GMC Yukon, Chevrolet Tahoe, Chevrolet Suburban, Cadillac Escalade, and GMC Yukon XL. If you smell gas fumes or see gas leaking from your full-size GM SUV it may be a simple DIY repair instead of taking it to the dealer. I’ll show you how to depressurize the fuel lines, disconnect the fuel and emission hoses, and lower the gas tank.
    As long as you can safely raise the vehicle and support it with jack stands you can replace the problem fuel line with a few basic tools. This is a DIY method for completing Technical Service Bulletin 17-NA-304, Condition 2, Fuel Leak.

    Thank You Thank You Thank You for this video. 2015 Chevy Suburban LTZ, same problem, same solution. I followed this video step by step, and it helped. Took me a while, but it was worth the savings. My biggest struggle was I could not see the top of the tank, I had to feel my way around to disconnect the old line and connect the new line. GOOD LUCK EVERYONE

    If that fuel line vibrates excessively at idle, you also need to replace the check valve fuel line at the engine,
    otherwise it will happen again soon, and you may actually get a hole in the tank next.

    • @HouseDoctorRay
      @HouseDoctorRay  Місяць тому

      The upgraded line with the braided sheathing is *very* tight where it snaps into the tank. I doubt it will rub there again.
      But you are correct about that line under the intake.

      The service rep wrote it up as needing a gas tank. They gave me the mechanics notes as part of papers when I picked up my truck (obviously not intentionally, they wanted me out quick). The mechanic wrote 'tank needs to be removed to determine where leak is'.
      The service rep emailed me the $8,000 estimate without even a heads up phone call.

      I'm sure the $3,500 for the flex pipe doesn't include them going at the bolts ice cold. Snapping them; then the studs in the head. Would've ended up being $9,000 by the time they finished butchering it.

    problem just happened to me last night on the way to Grandma’s house. In drive thru of Mcdonald’s, my wife noticed the gas smell. Thought it was the old pickup exhaust in front of us. Got to Grandma’s peaked under with a flashlight… same drip, near the midsection of 2015 Yukon XL - and only when the engine was running. leak is driver’s side, below where the front and 2nd row seats are situated.
    Of course on July 4th.

    • @HouseDoctorRay
      @HouseDoctorRay  7 днів тому

      Bummer. Some people have had luck at the dealership getting this covered.
      It's not that difficult to fix yourself as long as you can safely lift the truck up a little.

    Thanks for the video. Great information. The only comment I have is that you should try to remove the tank strap bolts by hand with a ratchet instead of using an impact wrench. My son and I tried doing this repair on my 2015 Tahoe. He used an impact gun on the rear strap and ended up breaking the clip that holds the bolt to the frame. The forward strap bolt came out using a hand wrench without damaging anything. In the end I had to take the truck to a dealer because we didn't have the tools to remove that rear tank strap.

    • @HouseDoctorRay
      @HouseDoctorRay  Рік тому

      Sorry it didn't work out for you. I hope the dealer didn't hit you too hard.

    • @captcheapass
      @captcheapass 7 місяців тому

      Same issue here, I read this comment and didn't use an impact wrench, just a ratchet. The back came out fine, but the front strap bolt has a nut that's up bolted to a frame bracket that you can't see and the weld came loose. This wound up with the bolt just spinning and unable to remove the tank strap. The only option then is to cut the strap or cut the head of the bolt off, which I was not inclined to do given there was fuel all over from the leak, and the tank is plastic and likely easily damaged. I spoke with a mechanic and he immediately knew how to fix it given he's dealt with this many times before. They cut the strap in the center, remove the tank, clean all the fuel residue, and cut the bolt and replace it with new.

    This is a very informative video. My only advice is do not use electric power tools around your gas tank. Maybe just pneumatic tools. Any spark would not be good. Saw a video where a whole shop burnt to the ground because a guy was using 18v Dewalt near a gas tank.

    It’s sad , I had a dealer say I needed a new catalytic converter because it was clogged. I had no power to climb hills or go over 50mphs. I took it to an independent mechanic to check it out. I couldn’t afford what the dealership quoted either. The independent said he’s never heard of a Chevy truck converter clog. Left it over night and he had it fixed in the morning. All it needed was a fuel filter. It was a big one up in the frame towards the back. He said it must have been the original one as it was still covered in factory undercoating. It ran perfectly after that. That was over 10 years but the same type of dealing.

    I'm getting ready to make this same repair this weekend. I took it to a dealership thinking this had to be covered by a recall. Instead, they quoted me $2000 for tank and $4000 for the total job. I told them to drive my Tahoe out of their garage and I would pick it up. They ended up charging me $175 for Diagnostic stating they ran a smoke test and it was leaking from a seam on the tank. I ordered the part today. Once fixed, I plan to light the dealership up on Yelp. Ridiculous service from dealership. GM needs to recall this before cars and potentially houses catch fire due to leaking fuel.

      Angle grinder.
      Carefully cut the head off of the bolt without damaging the strap.
      If you don't have one Harbor Freight has them cheap. I've had one for years from there. I also have a Metabo from Lowes which is inexpensive. Both are good enough.

      @MandRroofing Рік тому +1

    • @HouseDoctorRay
      @HouseDoctorRay  Рік тому

      As long as there are no fumes. I would still put cardboard or a piece of wood in the way.
      You'll have to source replacement bolts and nuts locally. If you have a Fastenal or Grainger's they should have them, maybe auto parts like NAPA. I wouldn't use those cheap zinc bolts from the hardware stores. You want a grade 5 bolt. Some hardware and construction stores carry them.
      Your best bet to get it tightened up if you can't reach the top is:
      Feed a long bolt down through the hole with a split style lock washer under the head.
      Put the strap on.
      Put a split washer and regular nut on.
      Tighten up.
      As everything gets tight the lock washer under the head of the bolt should keep it from turning. If it doesn't stop it from turning you can always grab the bolt below the nut with vise grips.
      Get the longest bolts you can feed through. If you need to you can always cut off excess after everything is tight with your new angle grinder.
      Good luck.

    • @HouseDoctorRay
      @HouseDoctorRay  Рік тому +1

      Was just thinking. If you have a lift...
      Disconnecting just the front lines may allow you to drop the front of the tank enough to get the pump out.
      Those back lines are really tight and you may have to cut them or use a heat gun to get the big one off.
