      Update I replaced all these parts but did not drop the tank. I still can't fill my tank. Now it's $750 to drop the tank and blow all the lines out. Soooo annoying thanks GM for making such an amazing part on my 100k original price escalade.

    The fuel tank vent solenoid is sucking dust. It is a simple valve open all the time, until an EVAP test is requested. Purge is the solenoid valve on the engine, with the "Green Test Fitting". During refueling, air trapped in the tank is pushed into the activated carbon canister. A pinched hose, filled with dust, other words are can't enter, it backs up. It is against the law to let gas fumes into the air, so they are captured in the canister. Purge is open to engine vacuum and pulls outside air thru the tank solenoid valve replaced in the video. The rectangular box on the hose next to the filler neck is the problem as dust plugs the foam filter under the cap the snaps on. A flat blade pocket screwdriver can remove this cover to clean the foam. If you drive on unpaved roads or live in the country, this will clog quickly.
    My suggestion it to remove it, place two small engine gas filters in a row to capture dust. This does not fix the problem unless you run hose to the front of the vehicle to get clean air, but allows you to save the fuel tank solenoid valve and just replace the filter. Finding a filter with a hose fitting to fit is the first. Small garden tractors to construction equipment such as a backhoe would work. Or find a fitting for a larger hose to small inside diameter.
    All vehicles, not just GM's have to use a similar system as for decades, metal lines ran to a round carbon canister on the left front inner fender. No problems back then.
    The 4 tabs on the inlet in if removed with be full of dust and the valve as well. Every 8 hours, then seals the tank. It watches a pressure sensor for loss of negative pressure on inches of water (H2O), the PCM closes the vent solenoid and opens the purge. This happens at highway speeds, If vent does not seal, it will have a small leak, save fail records. Then repeat later. Second test runs and fails, check engine light. “Check gas cap” message on dash comes on after first fail.
    If a large plastic fuel filter can be found with fitting for vent line, this would catch most all dust. Another shop uses a large white sock rolled 5-6 over inlet to block dust as they drive on gravel roads. A 14 foot hose could place the fuel tank vent valve inside the engine compartment. Easy fix, but that would cost, GM, Ford, Toyota and others $3 more per vehicle. We can’t have that!!
    The activated carbon is treated to expand, leaving thousands of microscopic holes in each. Fuel is captured as the tank is filled, providing it gets pass the “Anti-Roll-Over-Valve” inside the tank. The inside tank fuel pump bucket holds fuel so air does not enter if low, while making long turns like the interstate on ramps. Always keep a 1/4 tank or more as pump gets hot and you will get misfire code. Blinking 1 time per second means the catalytic converter while over heat. With the ceramic grid, the shell overheats expands, cracks the ceramic grid, turns sideways, rattles and blocks the exhaust. “Banana in the tailpipe?” Eddy Murphy reference! But looses power!
    The air inlet during purge and air exhaust during filling is the same line. Protect the holes on that end with a filter of some kind, problems stay away for a long time. Exothermic heating causes the carbon canister to heat up, with purge causes an endothermic cooling reaction as the hydrocarbons you paid for. Raw gas fume rise to 10k feet in the atmosphere and mix with other gasses plus sunlight to create photo-chemical smog.
    I can careless about smog. It may affect some but our smog is blown else where. Exact ignition timing, cam position for EGR, no lead for cat’s to work, carbon canisters, purge and tank vent valves are here to stay. It is a cross we all bare, wether we want it or even know it’s there! Another of the 2,000 reasons for that check engine light. All roads are not paved and wind blows dust into the tank vent valve inlet. Remember, the vent is open all of the time. So do something to help it stop causing problems in rural areas and farmers. Blame the engineers, the DOT and the EPA. Canisters were in the engine compartment since 1968 for cars, later for trucks. Seal belt were required in trucks by July 1971. PCV systems were required in 1964, no more draft tubes hanging down below the oil pan, OBD-2 was required in 1994 as OBD-1 was in California already. I had to know all of these things.

      What an awesome explanation. I'm on my 3rd vent valve solenoid in 2 yrs... Installed the newest one last weekend because the seal on top lost its seal and there was a hairline crack in the side. The next day, I went to fuel up and it stopped after 2.5 gal. Also replaced purge solenoid the same day (AGAIN. For the hell of it). Replaced fuel tank filler neck last month and charcoal canister this past spring. All parts are OEM. Smoke test shows no leaks and so far, the light hasn't came back on, YET. I know it's coming though. It's like playing a slot machine every time I start the truck.. Any suggestions? It's an 07 Avalanche

      @@wild_for_nature9932 On the fuel tank vent solenoid has one job, to shut and seal the tank when testing the EVAP when the PCM calls for it. It is timed based upon run time and tank levels between 90% - 20%. Above or below the test aborts. The vent solenoid is next to the carbon canister and has a flat side with holes in it. Remove it, pinch hose connector & twist off, disconnect wire connector. (I use Rock Auto to see photos of the vent in advance to ID, and see shape & cost) but a flat blade screwdriver fits under tabs to un-clip to remove this cover. Inside is a simple foam chunk with an inlet hole underneath. Modify it using any MacGyver trick to install a much better dust filer. (Note; This is for EVAP leak codes) Every area under this area gets dust. The engine gets gas fumes out of the canister an burns them. Plus, many use a "Roll Over Valve" inside the tank / part of the pump sometimes) but allows air out during re-fueling. I would put a better filter media in it, more of it, move it, fit with lawn irrigation hose and run it forward to a coffee can filled with foam like lawnmower air filter type, many holes in the lid, paint it black, hang it. (True, Decades, Ford used a blk coffee can for a vacuum canister)
      Just throwing out ideas, MacGyver style! In the 70's, 80's, GM used a round carbon canister by the left front fender on inner fender panel. Those never clogged! I knew a shop who wrapped it with sports socks as the drove on gravel roads. DK

I've checked all hoses and charcoal canister. Everything is intact. My gas gauge is always showing full. Can a bad gas pump and sending unit be the culprit?Any help would be greatly appreciated. So I've replaced all three parts, (Charcoal Vapor Canister, Vapor Canister Purge Valve, and the Vapor Canister Vent Valve) and even went back under the SUV to make sure line from Charcoal Canister had no more Charcoal pellets in it. I unfortunately am still have the fuel fill issues, but have no codes. Ant suggestions? It is getting irritating to pump gas as I have to find a pump with less pressure so I can squeeze lightly and constantly have to find a position for the fuel filler so it can click less.

      If you replaced the canister, did little charcoal balls fall out everywhere? If so, then the canister ruptured and those little charcoal balls are probably stuck inside your vent lines. Unhook it at the canister and unhook it at the instake/valve. Blow compressed air through and see if you push out the trapped media. Also, you can do this to the vent hose running up to the fuel tank filler neck as well. Sorry that you're having these issues.

      My 2010 5.3 yukon xl began taking fuel correctly again after a couple of fill ups after the charcoal box and (two front and rear) solenoid replacements. I thought it was something else. Replacing the parts resolved the problem (Advanced Auto - Car Quest).

  • @JohnDoe-hy1rj
    @JohnDoe-hy1rj 3 роки тому

    I might be wrong but isn’t that you’re changing the solenoid? The other side with the box is the charcoal canister. The purge valve (solenoid) is a valve that allows the fumes to pass into the canister, if it’s closed it won’t let you fill the tank. The actual canister is not electrical, just a box. just asking

    My father-in-law just gave us his 2005 escalade. He said he has trouble filling the tank. Fills a little at a time and pump stops. He said this didn’t happen until someone had put the spare tire back up. Could the spare tire be pressing up against a part of the hose to make this do this or is this just a coincidence? Any ideas? Thank you

    • @Shoptoolreviews
      @Shoptoolreviews  4 роки тому +1

      That is a possibility, since everything is in that are; however, it's probably just a coincidence in both happening. You could probably remove the charcoal canister and blow out the dust that is probably clogging it. This may fixe the issue, or it could require the Vent Valve Solenoid.

    • @Shoptoolreviews
      @Shoptoolreviews  4 роки тому +5

      Yes, there are at least 2 other problem areas in the evap system. There is an evap solenoid up on top of the intake manifold that is pretty cheap, and it's very easy to change. There's also the actual charcoal canister (rectangle box) that you vent tubes connected to, under the vehicle. If this canister is clogged, which is not uncommon, it will cause the same symptoms. You can remove the canister and try to blow it out with air, or even run water through it to clean it. Many will advise against this, but it is possible.

      Usually you do have to reset the code after replacing any part dealing with a code because it came up. Take it somewhere to get it reset or take off the negative lead on your battery and leave it off for a few minutes then place it back on.

    Quick questions sir. So when I pump gas now in my tahoe. It spits it back up in my face with hella force. No matter how slow I go. It takes 30 mins just to get to half a tank.
    Took it to dealer. They said I need a whole new tank. Because the filler flap inside is broken. Any suggestions on what to do. I don't have $1,300-1,800 to spit out just for a tank and labor.
    So in lieu of figuring out myself. I took out the flap completely. And took out the screen that's inside the filler neck. Stuck a wire all the way down and there's nothing blocking the fuel from the tank.

      It is pretty much the same parts and procedure, since they are emissions required components.
