What’s the American Gangster movie about?
Frank Lucas (Denzel Washington from The Equalizer and Malcolm X) decides to take over his boss's business after he died. He becomes a powerful drug dealer, who manages to overcome the American mafia thanks to a new strategy: he starts selling heroin directly imported from Vietnam half the price of other dealers, while his quality is much higher. This drug, Blue Magic, is making its success. But Richie Roberts (Russell Crowe from Gladiator and Man of Steel), a New York cop who lost his teammate to an overdose, is going to try to bring him down.

That suit jacket on Denzel was sharp af
I don’t know exactly why but i really love this scene. The peaceful singing and the calm reaction of Frank is really melancholic. Not a big fight, no shooting. just a man who knows and accepts his fate and takes it like a man should.
Then he squealed as to only serve a 5 year prison sentence... Which any man would have probably done in his place - since he was a decent caring Christian
Young one.. Need a sicks with a fishing rods.. Brother insurance.. And inbrassin.. Why shootle.. With a run.. Or was he walking..
@@jonparrish7763 in English please.
Just amazing how everything fit together so well. First time seeing this movie I was 12 and it was so chilling. How can a film be so well directed and acted that capture the American culture perfectly, chilling
He wasn’t a man.
Some people can't be bought bullied or negotiated with. Frank learned that the hard way. He tried to offer him money, then he tried belittling him, then he tried to threaten him but Richie just wasn't having it. Frank was brought down when he realized he had no power
OK Alfred 😉
At the expense of losing his family not worth it
i wonder how long the trial lasted and how many guards Ritchie must have had!!???
K Batman quote. 😂
@@mcdonaldmoreli396 Who cares.
frank was like " My man" 😅
🤣🤣🤣🤣
It harkens back to his role as Alonzo in _Training Day_ .
All because of that coat his wife got him!
Just no
That's the same shit insaid man he wouldve went to the fight in a suit and tie they wouldve left him alone
@@dre2xs615 no off course not. See this, a black guy with the best seats surrounded by italian mafia. A suit or a expensive coat was never the case. What the police saw, was a black making progress and in the 70s that was unusual that made Frank the number one suspect.
@@rodge565 yeah ok but let’s allow race to a major factor. Yes it was unusual, however a simple suit and quiet entrance would have made his detection a lot more difficult. The coat and his glamorous entrance was what caused his notice.
@@sullivandmitry1416 i mean, a black having a laugh with the italian mafia is od enough.
1:28 I love that "Gotcha!!" look when Richie Roberts walked up to him. Didn't need to say anything. He just used his eyes.
More of Gotcha MF lol
i just watched this movie again yesterday and i realized a subtle theme that I didn't pick up on before. Richie and Frank were total the total antithesis of each other. Richie was the honest virtuous man in his profession, but a terrible human in his personal life. Frank was the honest virtuous man in his personal life and the terrible human in his profession. And it was almost destined for them to collide, then become friends. They were a perfect match
@n_the_illest or maybe frank was never the bad guy at all...
Richie? The same that did Bobby Luppo?
If you enjoy that theme, HEAT has a similar one.
So who’s to say who’s the bad guy. Even morally so.
@@coyotecodey1160 Let's not get ridiculous now.
One of the greatest American Actors is Denzel.
Absofuckinlutely
He is a true legend man!
Hes the best
Hands down!!! He's up there with, Al Pacino and Richard Nicholson when actors where real actors!
The best ever!
For the life of me I cannot remember Denzel ever being in a bad movie. It's no surprise every actor in Hollywood falls over themselves to work with him because you can take it to the bank.
He picks his movies very carefully.
The first equalizer movie is absolutely horrible. Second one is great but the first is so bad I can’t even believe a second one was made, other than that though I agree
Virtuosity? but i like that movie also
@@henshin587 And both him and Crowe were in that movie.
You got that right!
The choir singing 'Amazing Grace' in the background delivers the best choir rendition of the hymn i've ever heard, the delivery is out of this world. I have watched this u-tube clip so many times and keep rewinding the film when it comes to the first 1 minute 41 seconds of this clip when the film is showing on TV just to hear this version of the hymn, damn, i once rewound it like 20 times. The Acapella and harmony kills me....it's BEAUTIFUL.
Same. Hands down one of the best renditions. A fitting song for the scenes portrayed as well.
Could not agree more. Amen.
The other song in the Church, a couple of scenes before this is a beautiful hymn too, i replay them a couple of times too
Hey I know this comment was posted 8 months ago, but I have some information for you. There are no known recordings aside from the movie soundtrack, but the acapella was sung by the real life Mt. Olivet Baptist Church choir - the same church that was shown in the movie, located in Harlem, NY. They also sung after the wedding scene in the movie.
Was just thinking this to myself as I rewatch this clip with headphones on..I’ve always liked the song and kinda took this rendition for granted until now, but sheesh, it really is amazing.
Denzel was perfect in this movie, no one would have done a better job. He played his role to perfection. Great movie. Very Underrated.
Probably the best scene of the movie. I like how the cops were at least still respectful to his mother and wife when they had to arrest him
His wife was part of the drug dealing she served time in prison herself even more time than Lucas did
Would never happen like that
@@justthisguy1948 True. In reality the, the mom would be getting all loud and ghetto lmao
@@locochang6533 I mean, not really. She knew her son was up to no good.
Amazing Grace...what. hell of a song to play at a scene like this
perfect song
Beautiful song/hymn and perfect for the scene, but a bit it cliche now in American cinema.
Yep nice Song
I don't know why but it just works _so_ perfectly here
Sterling Johnson, Jr., a federal judge who served as a special narcotics prosecutor and assisted in the arrest and trial of Lucas, described the film as "one percent reality and ninety-nine percent Hollywood." In addition, Johnson described the real life Lucas as "illiterate, vicious, violent, and everything Denzel Washington was not."
You don't make it to the top of a criminal organization selling deadly narcotics by being a good person. Thats common in Hollywood, i watched this thinking a lot of it was fabrication, still enjoy anything Denzel Washington does.
UA-cam keeps deleting my comment about the glorification of the Gangster made by Hollywood. They don't like facts to be discussed anymore.
I've posted the comment 5 times and after exactly 20s it gets shadow deleted (no notification) by their lovely algorithm. Thank you, Susan Wojcicki

Wow, what an amazing career: both a cop and a prosecutor at the same time!

The true G? This guy ratted on everyone no G at all
Denzel is the best actor working today and probably the best all time, hands down. He is definitely the 🐐
Arresting a man outside a church on a Sunday morning in front of his family? Damn, thats cold blooded.
Murderering your own people and city is more cold blooded
Just like Franks criminal career. Very fitting. God I love this movie so much.
They wanted to make a point.
Man Denzel is SO GOOD in this movie
Beautiful combination of amazing grace and this scene.
Denzel Washington deserves Oscar for every single of his roles
Carbon Copy?
That's kinda like the police version of the Michael corleone Baptiste scene.
Great observation.

Lol good call
Many car payments ago". I haven't got a car and he still made me think about my car payments lol. Great actor Denzel.
Russel Crowe's character in this movie kills me. They make him out to be Johnny Law, and after the events of the movie, he goes on to become a criminal defense attorney, pretty hard left hahaha
When you turn in a million dollars he could of put him in retirement in those times he was the Gordon of NJ/NYC that was needed through those times. Make a legacy by saving the city before Rico Law was put into effect
I've rewatched this movie over a dozen times and it just clicked that when Ritchie was putting on his suit jacket; Initially I thought he was adjusting and tightening the lapel piece, nope he was taking off the tags. Gives so much detail to the character and to the story that was being told.
The look the two ushers give each other when they open the doors is great lol
The coat and him sitting in the front row having a better seat the the mob boss.
Amazing grace how sweet the sound
That saved a wretch like me
I once was lost, but now I'm found
Was blind but now I see
'Twas grace that taught my heart to fear
And grace my fears relieved
How precious did that grace appear
The hour I first believed
Through many dangers, toils, and snares
I have already come
This grace that brought me safe thus far
And grace will lead me home
When we've been here ten thousand years
Bright, shining as the sun
We've no less days to sing God's praise
Than when we first begun
Amazing grace how sweet the sound
That saved a wretch like me
I once was lost, but now I'm found
Was blind but now I see
I like the way Denzel says "My Man"
I love how sloppy Russell Crowe looks in this movie.
Denzel is a perfectionist in his craft. He made me study Malcom X after I saw the movie.
He made me Google and UA-cam Frank Lucas. He had me mesmerized in Glory.
He's given the most memorable commencement speeches ever done (you have to Google it, amazing). His awards acceptance speeches are filled with warmth and wisdom.
He's truly the greatest American actor. Ever. Here's why:
Look at how he carries himself, treats other's and cares for his family.
Compare that to the insane Marlon Brando or the incredible boring Robert DeNiro.
Denzel has class like no other. He's an inspiration to those with no direction and a true
American citizen who will always be considered the GOAT.
You're clearly a racist and overcompensating by complimenting him this much. He has 'class?' Who says that about black people in this day and age? Next you'll tell me he's articulate and well-dressed because we don't expect that from "the blacks" right? Get you goofy ass on, racist.
Lmao. This movie is clearing copying deniro and brando
I'll never consider the opinions of a man who says another person he's never met, made him do anything. What a minute minded person you are.
Johnny Depp as well
Clown
1:23 that look on his face.
Never heard of this hangover first time change your mind Respect is for real 😉 keep it coming 🔥
This what happens when you put family in your business it’s a reason they couldn’t figure out how to make millions sometimes it’s good to be a loner
I always liked the way the two detectives were gentle and polite with Frank's mother and wife when they ushered them back into the church, the African American detective even addressed her as "Mother Lucas". Yes they were cutting Frank off so he couldn't run, but they were also making sure innocent people weren't in the line of fire.
The only reason we need in life: Because its the right thing to do 👍🙌
1:28 only Russel Crowe can make that little shake badass.
That part always cracks me up
Pity they didn't pursue politicians this way...
👍🏻
'I once was lost but now am found'
That is played when they show the police.
The closing seconds of this scene is - is Frank bribing him with another Million dollars? 😱
Didn't even think about that -- you could be right about that. It has the makings of a bribe -- he already had plenty of powerful people on his payroll, so adding another one was no big deal to him.
Perhaps, this time, Frank could have arranged to put a million dollars in Mr. Richie's trunk.
Probably the same million he turned down before it made its way back to the streets
What a movie and what an actor Denzel is. He’s great in Training day also
Training Day smashes this film.

they played it so well to the point you feel like you cant knock either of them both doing their jobs to the best of their abilities...just one of those jobs happens to be illegal.
Could have made a huge spectacle with sirens and whatnot but instead simply closes the door behind frank and makes it clear that it's over while showing enough respect to buffer his family from seeing frank taken away in cuffs. Something like that would have stuck in the mind of frank who was very much about the image someone portrays and the concept of respect, even between enemies.

Wow so touching
Brilliant acting.
Great scene ! This movie I saw in 2010 while promoting country music best film ever !
It breaks my heart that the full recording of Amazing Grace used in this scene seems to be impossible to find. The choir is not credited in the movie, the recording was not included in the soundtrack and I can't find any information anywhere, except for some vague reference to the choir of Mt. Olivet Baptist Church in Harlem, where this scene was filmed. It's the most beautiful version of this hymn I've heard, and we only get 1 minute and 40 seconds of it.
My man...
powerful scene. love Denzil.
Richie was Frank’s #1 adversary by legal definition, but you can tell he held more respect for him than any other person in this story.

Denzel is the GOAT in all of Hollywood
How smoothly he found a way to offer him a bribe.
God I love this scene so much. The camera work and pacing, the choir music, the helpless feeling you get as the camera pans around to the surrounding blockade.
The cut from Frank to the police blockade as the choir sings “I once was lost, but now am found”. Perfection.
Me and the boys when the principal yelled our names in 3rd grade during recess
Of course anyone in their right mind knows where this is going
Realest part in the whole movie
I see what ur sayin'. But it sorta didn't go down that way. Check out the real Lucas , Ritchie interview on Charlie Rose .
2:29 I’m surprised the cop who made most of the arrests, and did most of the investigating was allowed to try the case.
Conflict of interest 🤔
Wasnt a big deal back then
Not only a conflict of interest, but it’s very rare that detectives, especially those involved in undercover work would not only be allowed to try the case, but would then be competent enough in law to. I mean, imagine if Richie did all this work, arrested virtually the whole Lucas family, only to screw up the case in court and they all went free.
@@alexjames4770
Bummer😔
He became a qualified lawyer after 👌🏾
That bugged me, too. Why couldn't they just have another actor do that court scene, with Russell Crowe present in the background? That's like a couple of lines of dialogue max. The rest of the movie would've been unaffected.
I finally got it. Tom Howard has been trying to look like Russel crow
That one cop always reminds me of Eric from that 70s show.

Denzel's looking great in this! For 52 or whatever.
While the movie deserves all the accolades it got and is still getting, remember this story is based for the most part on the life of Frank Lucas. Lucas was THE American Gangster. His drug "business", "destroyed more black lives than the KKK." That's what he did to his own people. He died in 2019 at the age of 88. Yes, In the end he was "sorry" for what he did, but seems like it was little to late.
Thanks for sharing this is an interesting way of looking at it as well
Damn coat 😢
I was so mad he looked angry and contemplating like he was going to have a shootout in front of A CHURCH!!!!!

Damn, this scene was so cold- whole operation shut down family everything over! 😫 They got the man at church 😫🙊
I detect an Ozzie accent in Richie Roberts voice, and since when does the prosecuting attorney apprehend criminals?
They don’t. It would make them a witness and therefore legally unable to prosecute the case.
