Only the second video I’ve watched of Bob Hansler but what I love about his videos over every other survivalist I’ve watched is how chill he is. He’s not trying to be Bear Grills. He’s just enjoying being in the wild and taking us along with him.
In '85 my grampa took me fishing for the first time that I recall. We got up before dawn, dug worms, walked through a little wood maybe a mile to a 'friends' pond, he showed me how to choose a stick, he had line and some hooks, he showed me how to make a simple pole... I even found a red and white bobber floating in the reeds which he helped me draw out and attach to my rig. One of my only memories of him but dang if it's not a good one! Thxs for the video, it reminded me of him.
The dog is smart! The fish were stuffed with onions. Onions, garlic, ramps, etc can/will make a dog sick. It destroys their red blood cells. There were only small amounts in the fish and it was the meat that he was trying to feed the dog. However the toxins are cumulative, so it might only take a small amount. I just went through this with my chocolate lab. She loves to play ball. being very unlike her while I wasn’t home, she grabbed an onion off the counter and played ball with it. Four days later I thought she was going to die.
This makes me smile... We took my 6 yo grandson boating last weekend and while we were in the cove swimming I made him a fishing pole like this and he was thrilled. Grandma's cool ya know.
Omg yes! Teach them to fish while they're still young, and they will never do drugs, they will spend their money on fishing rods, reels, and all that good stuff.

I've hiked and backpacked solo for decades and NEVER ONCE thought about wrapping some fishing line around my walking stick! Thanks for the tip. Here's one for folks who've never made cordage (string, line, rope, etc): practice the technique with unwaxed dental floss. It's cheap, easily available and works really well. You'll astound yourself, and you'll be learning an ancient survival skill that most of the people in the world no longer know. Great video!

I own 34 acres 40 miles east of Austin and have lots of rattlesnakes. I was raised on a ranch of 1300 acres in north Texas that was started by my great grandfather. I’ve been taught a lot about country living by my father and his father. I’m 32, I’ve cowboy’d, I’ve welded for oil energy production, and I spent five years in college before I wound up in the video game industry. Having been a Leader for 30 some years as well as a staff member of several summer camps (yes an Eagle Scout as well) I've taught wilderness survival along with many other Merit Badges. Your presentation was one of the finest that I've ever seen. I Sincerely hope that some local troop is using your skills as a resource... This was GREAT!

I lived in El Paso as a young teen and we knew of several creeks and ponds to fish in, all within hiking or biking distance. Mom loved it when we brought fish home! Great video!

Loved the video. Great tutorial video. I could almost taste the smoke on those fish. I've never had a opportunity to eat the cactus 🌵 fruit but I sure would like to try it. I would have definitely eaten the crawfish.
Extremely different from what I have here in northeast Oklahoma and it's only a 4 hour drive to Texas from here, maybe less. But within Texas: in the northeast is more heavily wooded and hilly with lots of streams and small bodies of water in the western central area you are getting into semi-arid, the trees are more like bushes and few sources of water except shortly after rain Those are the only two areas of Texas I can speak intelligently about as I haven't spent much time in any other areas. Having said that, Oklahoma is somewhat the same. As you move from east to west, the terrain changes as does the climate (somewhat) along the same lines. Been wondering for some time about the edible things I know about in northeast Oklahoma, as in how wide spread is/are lamb's quarter? Sand plum trees? Blackberries? Mulberries? Polk? Cattails? Did learn a couple of things from the video, though. Briar shoots are edible. Making string/line/twine from yucca leaves. I knew about prickly pear 'apples' but had never heard when is best to harvest them. Thanks for a great video!

I gotta say, I absolutely love this dude and this channel. I was a vegetarian for 12 years for many reasons, one main reason being that I live in a place where I didn't feel I had to eat animals to survive, and I wanted to give it a try to see what the other side was like. But I always maintained the attitude that there is no issue in eating animals provided one is respectful and humane such as Bob when hunting for food. Even my current vegetarian friends love this channel and hope this attitude and way of life eventually becomes the norm. Great channel and content Bob! :)

Good informative video. I loved how you did the reality check at the end and used the scout motto be prepared. That can keep someone from being overconfident and putting themselves in a bad survival situation.
Is this how a raw Texan speaks? Theres something stylish about it and more importantly, something rustic and natural, a natural thing that a person from anywhere in the world can identify with. I mean, in my town, old tough men speaks jus like this, and they know stuff just like this. My salutes. You guys are the real natural human thing, and maybe thats why all of them other ones from other countries relate to u and speak the same style no matter what the language is (i mean only the raw natural guys). Theres just something universally common about you rare lot around the world. The things u endure, the things you eat, the way you carry on unlike some city folks who wud just say yuk, freak out , run and eventually die prematurely. Once again, respect to you. As a Texan, old enough to remember when almost all boys were in the Boy Scouts and such skills were considered essential training (although not necessarily all scout troops teach or taught how to harvest and prepare cactus), I appreciate very much what Bob is sharing. Prior to WWII, 95% of Americans lived in rural settings and were likely to have a good grasp of the things Bob shared. Today, sadly, upwards of 99% of Americans live in cities, crammed together like cattle (or sheep) in slaughter pens. These skills (and the ability to look a snake in the eyes and not flinch as he steals your fish) are what are going to ensure that "We the People" survive when the SHTF. God Bless Bob.

It was great to see the natural materials of Texas. A whole different climate than the Northern Pacific rain forests.
Extremely different from what I have here in northeast Oklahoma and it's only a 4 hour drive to Texas from here, maybe less.
But within Texas:
in the northeast is more heavily wooded and hilly with lots of streams and small bodies of water
in the western central area you are getting into semi-arid, the trees are more like bushes and few sources of water except shortly after rain
Those are the only two areas of Texas I can speak intelligently about as I haven't spent much time in any other areas. Having said that, Oklahoma is somewhat the same. As you move from east to west, the terrain changes as does the climate (somewhat) along the same lines.
Been wondering for some time about the edible things I know about in northeast Oklahoma, as in how wide spread is/are lamb's quarter? Sand plum trees? Blackberries? Mulberries? Polk? Cattails?
Did learn a couple of things from the video, though. Briar shoots are edible. Making string/line/twine from yucca leaves. I knew about prickly pear 'apples' but had never heard when is best to harvest them.

I gotta say, I absolutely love this dude and this channel. I was a vegetarian for 12 years for many reasons, one main reason being that I live in a place where I didn't feel I had to eat animals to survive, and I wanted to give it a try to see what the other side was like. But I always maintained the attitude that there is no issue in eating animals provided one is respectful and humane such as Bob when hunting for food. Even my current vegetarian friends love this channel and hope this attitude and way of life eventually becomes the norm. Great channel and content Bob! :)

"Better than Okra!" That's a bold ass statement right there, especially in Texas, as we tend to love our okra. That must be some good Tuna. I've never had it green before. I've also never seen fish processed that way. Have to try that sometime. Great video, I've watched it twice, once with my wife.

Price of the pole doesn't affect the quality of the catch. As long as you have something sturdy in a good spot with good bait you are fine

Good informative video. I loved how you did the reality check at the end and used the scout motto be prepared. That can keep someone from being overconfident and putting themselves in a bad survival situation.
Is this how a raw Texan speaks? Theres something stylish about it and more importantly, something rustic and natural, a natural thing that a person from anywhere in the world can identify with. I mean, in my town, old tough men speaks jus like this, and they know stuff just like this. My salutes. You guys are the real natural human thing, and maybe thats why all of them other ones from other countries relate to u and speak the same style no matter what the language is (i mean only the raw natural guys). Theres just something universally common about you rare lot around the world. The things u endure, the things you eat, the way you carry on unlike some city folks who wud just say yuk, freak out , run and eventually die prematurely. Once again, respect to you. Thanks for showing us a glimpse :)
As a Texan, old enough to remember when almost all boys were in the Boy Scouts and such skills were considered essential training (although not necessarily all scout troops teach or taught how to harvest and prepare cactus), I appreciate very much what Bob is sharing. Prior to WWII, 95% of Americans lived in rural settings and were likely to have a good grasp of the things Bob shared. Today, sadly, upwards of 99% of Americans live in cities, crammed together like cattle (or sheep) in slaughter pens. These skills (and the ability to look a snake in the eyes and not flinch as he steals your fish) are what are going to ensure that "We the People" survive when the SHTF. God Bless Bob.
