Primitive Soup Cooked Using Deer Skin - Field to Fire- Clam n' Onion

  • From field foraging to rock boiled soup in a deer skin! You've gotta see this!
    This is a look into what cooking a soup took before the advent of clay and metal pots and pans. The process is time consuming and might seem a bit over the top... but imagine what lengths you might go to for something different after weeks/months/years of meat cooked over the flames. Variety is the spice of life and cooking has been a huge part of that life to humanity for tens of thousands of years.

    Hey Group
    Hoping ya'll like this video, admittedly I could have added quite a bit of info in hindsight. This took a great deal more effort than I had hoped in regards to the lack of eyesight... hoping feverently that the surgeries this summer are successful and grant me back some sight. Tell me what you think on this one! I'll try to answer the questions I am sure will come. Comment like crazy on this one if you can, time to get this channel recognized by the UA-cam algorithms once again so these vids get seen. Thank you all,
    Until Next Time,

      It'd take close to a pound of onions before he really experienced any negative effects. Quantity, as with most things is what is important in this.

      Bob Hansler would you be willing to put on a day or 2 class? You could set it up as a set number of people allowed... offer it as a option for making a donation over a sent amount to the channel as a way to give back to those who donated... I was thinking that it would be an awesome way to fund your channel & help with anything else you need... you have fans that I'm sure would love the meet you... you could also have your daughter channel involved helping grow her views... sorry if I'm over stepping my bounds... Your way is so much safer if you are not experienced and only have one hide. thanks for this excellent example of what can be done. On the clams, take a shell and scrape out the meat from the others. Thanks for this.

    Thanks for sharing...on a side note...I read somewhere that onions and garlic have thiosulphate which is very toxic to both cats and dogs...it destroys their red blood cells so they get sore and lethargic, but the symptoms are often delayed or subtle so the owner never notices their pet suffering from the toxin...which they would avoid in the wild, but because our cooking can often disguise the flavors of onion and garlic, our pets sometimes fail to detect the thiosulphate toxin and just chow down at their own peril. Didn't look like your pup ingested too much of it or anything, but still figured it couldn't hurt to make sure you knew about it :)

    • @BobHansler
      @BobHansler  6 років тому +50

      As a Biologist I am versed on the subject. It'd take close to a pound before negatively impacting a dog his size. Quantity is lithe issue with many things. Appreciate the concern.

    • @tmalonso
      @tmalonso 6 років тому +2

      Glad to hear you already knew about the issue...Not to beat a dead horse, but I'm curious, where do you get that 1lb estimate? For some reason I thought I remembered the formula as half a percent of their body weight can give dogs or cats hemolytic anemia...so by that math, for every 25lbs of pet body weight, it only takes 2 ounces of combined onions/garlic to make them suffer pretty bad...so even 8 ounces can make a 100lb dog sick...unless I'm underestimating the size of your pup, my math seems to cut your estimates in half...not a big difference, but with pets I figure it's better safe than sorry, so I wanted to ask, thanks for the reply!

    • @shawnsisler3743
      @shawnsisler3743 6 років тому +3

    • @JusBidniss
      @JusBidniss 6 років тому +6

      And of course, another thing to consider is that Huck didn't ingest anywhere close to 2 oz (about 1/4 c) of the actual onions. More like a lick or two of weak onion broth. Which would probably not cause anything more than some stinky gas -- more 'toxic' to Bob than Huck! :)

    • @tmalonso
      @tmalonso 6 років тому +2

      yep, if you check my original comment I mentioned that Huck didn't have much...also cooking the onions doesn't reduce the toxicity...and its always a gamble when dealing with wild plants...you might stumble across some extra potent wild onions making the store bought onion by weight estimates inadequate ;)

    I had no idea you could eat the seeds of the yucca! It seems really easy to get a lot of callories from that, as you were able to collect a lot in a short amount of time. The mature yucca pods are sweet? Are you able to eat them plain, or do you have to make it into a bread/cook it?

    That technique it's still practiced in southern Mexico, in Oaxaca there's a traditional dish called "Caldo de piedra" (Stone soup), made with fish, tomato, onion and chilis.
    Only men can cook it, as a present for wives and family women.

      Bob Hansler - oh my word! Bob, this is in my opinion the most overall refined video that you’ve made on so many levels! I am a classically trained chef and I have never seen or have tried to cook in a skin though I knew about doing so . Thank you so much.
      The ingredients were so much more with you foraging for them. You’ve inspired me to put them (substitutes on my own table.
      Wish I could cook with you some day.

      Bob Hansler just off the cuff did you ever come across or did the ancient people in your area ever do pit cooking of whole animals and or tubers and vegetables?
      I find the whole cooking aspect so interesting and so vital to the progression of life then and now. The methods our ancestors used connect with us today with them which I find fascinating.
      Thanks so much for your interest in my opinion, I truly appreciate it.
      I know you have talked about you knife and your trail bag which i am such a fan . There is a guy on UA-cam “ GMMD green mountain metal detecting who can make bags and sheaths custom. I believe him to be a very good person of honor and would encourage you to contact him if you need any high quality satchels or sheaths.
      I wish I knew a knife person to recommend because I would really like one such as yours.
      You guys ( y’all) are awesome and my wife and I are here for you, if we can do anything let us know.🙏🏻

    I miss doing this kind of stuff when I was younger. I grew up and 30 years later still live in a suburban area but I took every chance I got and went camping or to my buddies houses which were out in the boondocks. Plan on moving when the time is right but videos like these help ease the pain since it's definitely been about 10 years I actually enjoyed the outdoors.
