Traditionally an Irish folk song, this was covered by The Dubliners in 1967 before Thin Lizzy rocked it up in 1972 for their breakthrough hit.
The song tells the story of a bandit in southwest Ireland who robs an English Army Officer to keep his girlfriend Molly happy after she promises to love him forever. She then betrays him and the young man is taken to jail.
love the lore
Grateful Dead actually recorded the first recording well before Thin Lizzy. It's just not as popular because they actually folk version with a small euk and harp and what you would hear the locals singing in the pubs or social gatherings
its an old irish folksong made popular by thin Lizzy in the 70's this is Metallicas cover of the Thin Lizzy version
Yep...a cover of a cover 😆
Lizzy Did It First
Then The Irish Rovers
But it's great 🤷
@@RandomManIncorperatedNo, its a very old irish folk song
This song is actually 100s of years old. No one knows who wrote it. It's a traditional Irish song. The definitive version of the song was done by Thin Lizzy and is a must listen for all classic rock fans.
Fun fact: Metallica has their own whiskey label called "Blackened American Whiskey" - part of the distilling process involves blasting Metallica music where the aging barrels are stored.
That's corny
@@stevenlindhorst7579 It fits with James though. Dude's kind of a cornball.
@@stevenlindhorst7579 Zany, almost.
Love this song - the driving force of the drums and James’s vocals are killer. The lyrics are super cool too - when you really hone in on them and listen to what’s being said. “I choked up my pistols - and shot him with both barrels” - too cool. Love it. One of my favorite all time Metallica songs.
A VERY old Irish drinking song! I love James Hetfield s voice singing it.
You guys are rockin hard tonight! You’re bringing back lots of memories tonight!
Rock on!
The song's exact origins are unknown. A number of its lines and the general plot resemble those of a contemporary broadside ballad "Patrick Fleming" (also called "Patrick Flemmen he was a Valiant Soldier") about Irish highwayman Patrick Fleming, who was executed in 1650.[2
Metallica makes everything sound better. Can't wait for their Christmas album! 🎄🎅
🤣 James would look great as Santa!!! 🎅
Dude that would be hilarious
I’d buy that album! 😆
nothing like a good ol' irish folklore song in the version of Metallica with a quarter of Jameson to kicking off my week!
Thin Lizzy was the band that took an old Irish drinking song and made 'Whiskey in the jar' a rock song in the 70's... Metallica's late bassist Cliff Burton was a huge Thin Lizzy fan and a fan of bassist/ vocalist Phil Lynott (They both passed away in 1986 😪😪 Lynott from organ failure from heroin abuse... Burton in a tour bus accident).
In 1998, Metallica were putting together a collection of cover songs for the 'Garage inc.' double CD... they decided to cover Thin Lizzy to honor Cliff Burton.
here we go again with cliff...
not everything in their career is conected with cliff. all of them wore listening thin lizzy, misfits and so on..
@@4md17 If u got nothing productive to say, shut it! EVERYTHING in Metallica's career IS connected to Cliff Burton and Dave Mustaine... Mustaine was critical in shaping their early sound and aggression as a songwriter... Burton was the one who taught James Hetfield everything about melody, harmonies and progression. Metallica's music became exceptional because of Burton's contributions - that was why they got way bigger than Slayer, Exodus, Anvil, Voivod, Death Angel, etc...
So why should we NOT honor Cliff Burton when the average Metallica fan has NO IDEA who he was unless diehards like me tell them that he and Dave Mustaine were early members?
Great song! Recorded by Thin Lizzy and Metallica. Both excellent versions. 👍
This is from their album of 70's covers from the 90's called Garage Inc. Its a cover of an old Irish folksong Thin Lizzy did originally.
This song was been around since 1800. It's been covered repeatedly over the last 200+ yrs.
There are rumors it was even sang during the revolutionary war
Always loved this song. Great reaction!!
This reminds me of college parties back in the day. It was a good time. I'm talking about life before internet & smart phones.
I love playing along with this one on my drums, always been one of my favorites.
fun song.. fun couple.. thank you for your reaction.. its always nice to see you guys.. xo
I loved this song off the album Garage Inc, one of my favorites from that double album. If I am not mistaken its a cover of a Thin Lizzy tune. The double album of Garage Inc was Metallica covering songs from artists that inspired them or they liked as bands. It has a very diversified portfolio of artists and songs from Skynyrd to Motorhead.
This song just makes me think of times past. Those crazy parties....too much fun. Thanks for your reaction you two.
Yes Thank you so much Asia & BJ during the last live stream, which was "favourite songs related to drinking", I requested this classic. This is one of the best covers I've ever heard which is probably better than the original by Thin Lizzy, this is my Step Mum's Favourite Metallica Song
Hope you enjoyed it!
@@AsiaandBJ I sure did
Sorry, this song was made over 100 years before thin lizzy put it out.
Song was originally written in the 1600’s. It’s amazing the staying power of truly great music.
This is an old Irish tune!!!! Love this one!!!!! Can't believe Metallica did this!!! 👍👍👍 really, blows me away that they covered this!!!! Very cool!!!
You guys should hear "Thin Lizzy" do this!! This is good, but theirs is better imo. And the original is a hoot, coz of the strong Irish flavor of it.
Damn right, Thin Lizzy did it better
Metallica love playing local song at their concerts in their original languages. In 2019 they were playing a concert in Trondheim, Norway. And they were singing in norwegians the song, Forelska i læreren by The Kids. Unbelievable and awesome.
An amazing song.
You can't help but love Thin Lizzy version of this song but Metallicas cover hits harder and more to my taste!!
🤘🤘🤘🤘
I would ask you to react to Metallica cover of 'So What' but I don't think you would be able to get it by the censorship 🤣🤣🤣🤣
This always makes me feel extra-Irish 🍀 Whiskey in a jar-o!
THANK GOD all my whiskey in the jar house party years was during the flip phone years lmao!!!!
Moonshine is corn whiskey made from corn mash.
I’ve been a subscriber for a while but this is my favorite reaction from you both
Especially trying to sound out the Gaelic stuff, just excellent.
Thank you so much 😁
B4 I knew it was a folk song 100's of years old;; I always correlated it W taking Molly & drinking Whiskey together.
Funny thoughts
Check out some Thin Lizzy sometime (live is the best).
“Jailbreak”, “Emerald”
It's an old Irish folk song that , early 70s band Thin Lizzy, did a remake of. Metallica did a kick-ass version of this!!
Metallica released this song and music video in 1998. So you were pretty spot on in terms of when they made this. But like others have said, it's a cover of a very old Irish folk song.
Thin Lizzy also did that song very very Awesome. You Two Rock!
Philip went on to write his very own stories. Give them all a listen. Watch him perform in the videos!
It’s esoteric for “lighting in a bottle”. Very occult words in the old metal. Especially Pantera,Metallica and Slayer “seasons of the abyss” 👁
“Whiskey In The Jar” is a traditional Irish song.
Thin Lizzy, an Irish band, made a hit back in 1973.
Metallica covered this song, very similarly to Thin Lizzy’s version.
Obviously, with a heavier tone.
Fun fact- all the extras in the video are close friends of the band and their roadies
Whiskey is Moonshine, A corn whiskey that hasn't been aged for a period of time in a barrel. That's why it's clear.
Well, if we are doing Metallica cover songs....how about Am I Evil (an original Diamond Head song)??? ♥ Don't get me wrong...I love Thin Lizzy. I had some of their albums in the 70s.
Actually whiskey starts out as moonshine. Badass song that still rocks!
This is a very special song for me it's my mother's favorite version 💖
This works best as a folk song. Asia, BJ: Ignore requests to compare it to Thin Lizzy's version. Cut to the chase and react to "The Rocker" by Thin Lizzy ua-cam.com/video/AsD7VWZxjbk/v-deo.html and appreciate Eric Bell's stunning guitar work
😏 man! Too many parties like that! Great memories.
Hey listen yall, I'm from AL, moon shine is most definitely whiskey. ❤
"if that's my house I'm moving out" 🤣🤣🤣🤣 the original version wasn't quite this rowdy🤣🤣🤣
My understanding is the song goes back so far no one knows who wrote it. covered many many times by many different artists. Old Irish folk song.
The Greatful Dead also did a version
Didn't listen to much Metallica and don't know this song but it's a good one.
I can’t even remember how many party’s I’ve been to back in the late 80’s early 90’s where people trashed the place at the end of the party.
THIN LIZZY is a must. This video has nothing to do with song.
The song is about a hghwman robbing a captain Farrell only to be betrayed by his girl, Molly.
They just released a new single and I am here for it
Oh i love it !!!!!🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉
Check out Garage Inc and The $5.98 E.P. - Garage Days Re-Revisited if you want to hear more Metallica covers.
That song is going to ring in your head BJ 😆
Good stuff. They’ll betray you every time;)
Definitely should check out the Thin Lizzy version for a good comparison.
My favorite version Was from a movie, but I don’t recall the movie title
This is the actual house Metallica rented as they were coming up. So they payed to make this video there, like 35 years later.
I can't relate to whiskey at all, but Metallica be killing it. Thanks, April, for supporting this Fam. What's next? Master of Puppets? haha!
The original was done by the dubliners you should check it out. Irish shanty
Been there. Even if I wanted to, just can't do it like that anymore.
Whiskey is moonshine.. moonshine is whiskey
Good, but I personally much prefer Thin Lizzy's version it's got a more authentic feel (helped no doubt by Phil Lynotts voice)
Great song - wild video - nice reaction!
BJ! You're the Irishman, tell us what the galic he's saying! Ha Ha , cool song as mentioned Thin Lizzy did version also.
Great song.. fun video. This is a cover song.. not an original.. but done fantastic. Video was 1999
Songs you should react to that is a cover
Turn the page (Bob segar originally) watch the music video.
AM I EVIL studio version (no music video) hold on to your seats. Song is background Salem witches when they were punished for witch craft.
Great song!
Hope you get to both of those songs..
Great reaction.
This is an old Irish drinking song. Thin Lizzy recorded it but this version is much better.
This was a weird time for Metallica. They lost their identity for a hot minute and were trying to find themselves. The video to this song makes no sense. The Dubliners wrote the original song. The Highwaymen recorded it an released it on their album in 1962. Thin Lizzy did a version of it in 1973. Their rendition changed some lyrics and other things. Metallica covered Thin Lizzy's version which was released in 1998.
No new ACAL?? I'll stick around for a little bit
Hey guys! Please react to Metallica's The Unforgiven Trilogy !! Great three songs! You're gonna love them!! 🖤
y'all got some many songs to react to
Love your reaction! More metallia. LOL
Imo best of the big 4 in metal
check out FUEL by Metallica
Ice nine kills for Halloween ❤
This is a much better cover by them than turn the page by Bob Segar was. IMO
I don’t ever get no shoutouts. I’m not enough of a super duper fan of Asia & BJ I suppose. 😢sniff 😂
Outraged that people are saying this is better than thin lizzy 😂
Yeah should do a reaction on some of thin lizzy songs
Thin Lizzy is the best version in my opinion. 🤘
yall should do Metallica Tuesdays gone version same ablum garage inc
Metallica doesn't have a song called whiskey in the jar... Ireland does
Sanitarium welcome home metallica
Written about 200 years ago
Excellent remake. I think Turn the Page is good too. Otherwise they are just not my type of music
You should check out Nothing else matters by them. A lot tamer than their older stuff. Bet you will like it. If you do?, also check out Hero of the day.
BJ you're hilarious 😂
This is actually a cover
Great cover by Metallica I want to see a reaction to sanitarium Metallica or the thing that should not be Metallica
Love this song by Thin Lizzy, check them out
Good cover song
Asia ur too serious! This is about not giving a fuk thats what metal all about!
Love me some Thin Lizzy..
Hit the like button to be honest like the song but preferred Thin Lizzy 's cover version
An old Thin Lizzy song.
Thanks just stupid party but love the band
What's better than Metallica ? Nothing!!
Whiskey and a gyro
Not their song it's a cover of Thin Lizzy's hit !
On a different note. You need to do this song by Henry Rollins "Liar". A brilliant song.
