Asia nailed it with "unless you tap into your feelings, you're just not getting it". In the era it was just lumped into "evil music", but when you listen to most Metallica, they just sing about dark topics that people don't like to discuss. Trapped Under Ice off this album is overlooked often, it's short, very fast, but conveys a feeling we've all had.

    • @iainlindsay6691

Trapped Under Ice is about Cryonics, the deep freezing of the body after death in preparation for being brought back to life. The process was a very hot topic in the eighties. Slayer also covers the topic in the track Cryonics on the Show No Mercy album.

@Chris Petenes - exactly this. Master of Puppets? A classic. Drug addiction, and a battle with it. Much repect for James Hetfield, as he was 23 at that time. Ride the Lighting? My god... the guy was 21.

Man. It may not be the most technical or blistering solo ever. But it’s always been my favorite guitar solo of all time. It’s their longest. And takes you on a RIDE.

I love Kirk's playing because it's an extension of the melody, not added on top to help him show off, his solos fit and fill the melody out instead of distracting from it. Aside from the playing method, the writing is outstanding from all sides.

This is off their best album too, imo. I saw them play live on this, their second tour. They were not well known back then, and the crowd was 3400+ people jam packed into a venue with the capacity of only 3000. It was wild, and i was at the front of the stage, literally, 'hands on the stage'. It was general admission, no chairs, just an open floor, with bleachers on each sides. I was standing probably 10 feet from Cliff Burton on the left side of the stage.

*I saw them Live in San Francisco in early '83, with both Dave and Cliff, and have been a fan ever since. They were so different than what the Rock Music Scene was offering at the time. They were mind blowing and as soon as their album "Kill 'Em All" was released....I got it. It was on the same day that I bought FANG's "Landshark" album. FANG...another band frequently appearing in the SF clubs. BTW..."Ride The Lightning" is a term used for execution by the electric chair. The song is focused on an inmate on Death Row.*

This song and Master of Puppets were the first 2 songs I heard by Metallica back in early '86 when I was around 14. The San Diego station 101.5 KGB ran a show every Sunday night called Metal Shop with host Brian Shock. I would record the show (80's teen way of downloading music) and one night it was a two play night. First up was Master of Puppets then Ride the Lighting. I listened to that recording at least 5 time per day for a year. To this day I always expect Ride The Lightning to come on after Puppets, lol. Great reaction. \m/\m/

YESSSS!!!! METALLICA!!!! One of my favorites from them, actually this whole album is 🔥🔥🔥. Just imagine all band members were in their early 20's when they recorded this!!!!! I had the pleasure seeing them perform this live in 2017 in San Diego... My best concert I've ever been too. Hearing the audio is epic, but to see them in concert is PRICELESS!!!!!!! Hope to see them again in the near future... Asia said it right... It's metal to the 10th degree!!!!!!!!!!!!! If this music doesn't get you up out of your chair, something in wrong with you......

Ride the Lightning composers: James Hetfield · Lars Ulrich · Dave Mustaine · Cliff Burton
    Ride the Lightning phrase:
To be put to death by means of the electric chair. Primarily heard in US. Scores of inmates rode the lightning while he was warden of the prison.

  • @joeynatts6542

BJ is on the right track. "Ride the Lightning" is a metaphoric term for being electrocuted in the electric chair. Look at the cover of the album. That is an electric chair on the cover.

  • @forevalearning

Straight up 💯 BJ. Riding the lightning while sitting in a chair. Songs like this you feel the energy and vibe via the instruments as opposed to say, RnB where you feel the same things via the singers voice. Great reaction Asia and BJ ❤️

Distortion can be obtained by turning your amp up to 11 (out of 10). Basically really loud and it vibrates and distorts. However, that was way back. Now you just buy pedals and such that give it the crunch/distortion and other effects.

    Guilty as charged
But damn it, it ain't right
    There's someone else controlling me
    Death in the air
    Strapped in the electric chair
This can't be happening to me
Who made you God to say
"I'll take your life from you?"
    Flash before my eyes
    Now it's time to die
    Burning in my brain
    I can feel the flame
    Wait for the sign
To flick the switch of death
It's the beginning of the end
    Sweat, chilling cold
    As I watch death unfold
    Consciousness my only friend
    My fingers grip with fear
    What am I doing here?
    Flash before my eyes
    Now it's time to die
    Burning in my brain
    I can feel the flame
    Someone help me
    Oh please, God help me
They're trying to take it all away
    I don't want to die
    Time moving slow
    The minutes seem like hours
The final curtain call I see
    How true is this?
    Just get it over with
If this is true, just let it be
    Wakened by horrid scream
    Freed from this frightening dream
    Flash before my eyes
    Now it's time to die
    Burning in my brain
    I can feel the flame

When Metallica began playing shows in L.A. in 1982, they were just 4 broke guys in their late teens/ early 20's w/ a band and a dream... play louder and faster than anyone before them, and get liquored up to raise hell 🔥🔥🤘🤘 In 1983, Metallica finally recorded their 1st album "Kill 'em all" and began touring the US in a rented van, trying to make a name for themselves. By 1984, Metallica made their way to Europe and had a new album written & rehearsed - their 2nd album 'Ride the lightning', which progressed into deeper, darker and meaner musical territory... I consider it their best record, cos there was nothing purer than that rage and aggression that they had put on tape w/ little money & nothing to lose.
Years later, when Metallica records would cost six to seven figures to make, they had lost that desperation that they had in their youth to make the best music possible...

Amen to this I could not say it better, this is pure raw rage put into musical form. By four supremely talented individuals.

Hey guys. Love watching your reactions. Ride the lightning is another term for being strapped into the electric chair.

This is the best song of Metallica from their greatest album.
The song is about someone getting executed with electric chair.

I forgot how young James sounds! Still gritty but just a bit higher than now. No matter the decade however, I'll always ❤ them ! You MUST, and I'd love to see you both react to "Master of Puppets" LIVE in Seattle '89. You may have heard the song, but you've got to see that live performance. I saw them on that tour in Cleveland and it was just 🔥🔥🔥 Just pure energy and of course FUN! 😁

BJ definitely does his best to steer and yet understand a song, even if it's out of his realm. He's done some noticeable research with the artist or band that gas been reported

Metallica has some good instrumentals. Check out (Anesthesia) Pulling Teeth, Orion or Call of Ktulu. They also have some good covers. Check out Last Caress, Stone Cold Crazy, Breadfan or So What?
