The historical significance of this show is what makes being a part of this amazing. The Soviet military tried a coup against Gorbachev to prevent the fall of communism and to prevent this show from happening just days before the show. The concert was completely free also marking the first open air free festival in the u.s.s.r. A lot of significant things came after this show also.
Important to point out this helped expose that Russia suffers even to this day the same bipolar Deep State issues the US is suffering now. Good vs Evil is everywhere, always has been.
@@rmr5044 But that isn't Capitalism fault. That was once again Greedy, Power Hungry, Evil people took It and destroyed it themselves.
The things we take for granted in the United States...
You said it sir. This the largest and most influential music/art event in human history.
This exposed oppressed Europeans to the freedom of western art and culture. I cannot overstate the importance of this single event!
@@PackaGame oppressed eastern europeans
Fun fact: Metallica is in the Guinness Book of World Records for being the only music act to play on all seven continents. North America, South America, Europe, Africa, Asia, Australasia, and finishing in December of 2013 in Antarctica, playing to a crowd of 120 people in a clear glass dome.
That is a fun fact, thank you, I’ll, ahem, give you one in return: Kate Bush has the same birthday as Emily Brontë..
I didn’t know that, amazing! Thank you!
@@silentjay6132 REALLY?!
@@galvantron992 Jk, you're right.
@@fernandopessoa7077 il be runnin up that hill
OK… It is said that there were 500,000 tickets sold but they ended up having to just open the gates and supposedly lost count at 1.6 million people. It was on the news back then that there were about 5 million people there. But no one really knows the exact number. Let’s just say it was a huge freaking concert!
Sold? The gig in Russia was a free concert part of the Monsters of Rock tour put on by the savior of Russia, Mikhail Gorbachev. 800,000 to 1,000,000 people is the official number.
@@CriticalRoleHighlights they quit counting at 800k. The entire airbase was filled. A friend traveled over 400 km to be there his stories most backed up by pictures are mind blowing
@@CriticalRoleHighlights you're correct about the concert was FREE! wiki says the official count was 1.6 million.
@@CriticalRoleHighlights it was free, but there was supposed to be about 500k tickets/wristbands given out. 1.6 million was where they quit counting.
51 people even died that concert
You gotta remember that this was the FIRST TIME! Russia allowed a LIVE heavy metal concert to take place that's why there was more than 1 million people there and the excitement!
Also the tickets were free
This footage always give me mad chills. The suppressed people of Russia being able to see a concert for the first time!
That's exactly what it was. I bet Metallica and other bands were shocked themselves. It was funny, cause people secretly were listening to Western bands and right there they had a chance to see it with their own eyes without being condemned and fined. On that day people showed that they've had enough of Communist regime and want to be able to choose freely what they want to do and what they want to listen without being told off.
I tear up and get chills…Every single time.
First taste of Freedom! Rock on!!!
fuckin HELICOPTERS OVER HEAD!
@@rickpedia6724 who told you that? We, people from former USSR, remember it pretty well.
I was 19 when this concert happened, I had a pen pal that went to this concert. He texted me yesterday and said that he just left the parking lot…..
🤣🤣🤣
Kkkkkk
This was right after the fall of the Berlin wall. This was first chance Russians were able to here American metal live. As you can see they were repressed and hyped for this, even the soldiers were rocking out. Lol power of music.
It was the Red Curtain that fell. Russia was once called U.S.S.R. The Berlin Wall was the when Germany separated itself cause of WWII, and when it fell it was amaze sight as well. David Hasselhoff was the King. We he still is actually in Germany
It was the first time watching a live concert. Believe me that the music was already getting to them. The same way that they were paying up to a thousand US $ for a pair of Levis jeans.
No it wasn’t the first time Bon Jovi , Ozzy Osbourne , Scorpions, Motley Crue ,Skid Row and Cinderella played the Moscow Music Peace Festival in 1989
@@robertphelps1574 I stand corrected. Close enough though lol. Anyway I appreciate the info. 👍
@@dancingflames4329 no problem I’ve seen Ozzy Osbourne performance from the festival on UA-cam
I’m not a concert guy, but watching Metallica live can’t be explained....it’s the best experience EVER
I’ve seen them three times, loved it every time! I’m overdue. Was in the mosh pit the last time :)
I saw them in Dallas a while back. My neck/ head hurt for 3 days from the head banging...
This concert must have been the best therapy session ever... Remains epic, no matter how many time one has seen it.
Pantera, AC/DC and Metallica.. in the same concert.
500.000 tickets.. but more than 1.500.000 people there actually..
the BIGGEST metal concert ever (and one of the 5 biggest of the world)
No tickets. This concert was free.
"According to various sources (the exact figure cannot be given, because the entrance was free), on Saturday, from 300 to 400 thousand people visited the airfield in Tushino. They did not reach the Guinness Book of Records (while the record for attendance of the free Jean-Michel Jarre show in 1989 in Paris, which was attended by 1 million 300 thousand spectators, is held), but maybe this is for the best." Moskovsky Komsomolets" 01.10.1991
@@roverwaters3875 in fact the largest show was over 3,5 million spectators whom were watching Rod Stewart on new years eve 1994-1995
“Metallica was the biggest band on Earth in the early 90s.” Hey! They still are the biggest band on Earth to this day
💯💚😎🖤
Nah nirvana was definitely the biggest band in the early 90’s
@@kevenrowe2958 no
@@kevenrowe2958 Metallica, Guns n Roses, and Nirvana are simultaneously the biggest bands from the 90’s I don’t think one of them are necessarily bigger than the other.
@@kevenrowe2958 Nope.
It's hard to even wrap your mind around how many people were at this concert. The most accurate estimate was 1.6 million. They could only estimate by the aerial views. It was a free and open concert. Absolutely legendary
Hey guys. I'm just getting back home to the US from this concert. I've been waiting in line for the outdoor bathrooms for the last 30 years. Did I miss anything? 😉
The Ecstasy of Gold at the beginning of their concerts is epic. It always fires me up, it says " its go time!" \m/
Still in the Guinness Book of World Records for being the only band to ever play on all seven continents and they did it within one year.
The crowd is massive, this concert is one of the most impressive metal festivals in history. But if you want to see a crazy crowd, you should react to metal bands playing in South America, nothing beats that, nothing.
south america and japan are the best place for rock band to tour.
Can’t go wrong with Domination by Pantera from the same concert.
Insane!!! Rip Dime
Gods of rock. RIP Dime 🤘
Agreed 100
Fucking A bro
Jason Newsted brought hella energy to the band.
He certainly did. Rob is a great bassist but Jason was energy personified
@@robcoulton6739 too bad the band didnt love him as much as us
@@shawnduguay205 indeed. They were immense live with Jason in the band
@@robcoulton6739 saw them in '89 in moncton nb. Queensryche opened. Was an epic night
🤘🏻😎
This event so so big my high school literally had full on discussion about the impact this had historically.
It's been argued Metallica concerts should have their own zip code for having larger populations than many countries.
This wasn't a Metallica concert ,they weren't even the headliner .
@@billwicketvogel1787 I know, but this happens wherever they are. Maybe not 1.6 million, but still massive numbers...especially in that day.
I saw Metallica five or six times on this tour and they kept tht same energy through all 2 1/2 hours of every one of those shows! It was incredible
I didn’t grow up withe cliff or jason era but man... idk Jason just holds a special place in my heart as the man who filled the shoes of Cliff. He was the right man for the job and I will forever believe that he brought more than 10,000% energy every show.
I was too young for the Cliff era grew up during the Jason era. Jason was amazing so is Robert but Cliff was something on a entirely different planet.
sad, but true!
"No social distancing"
lol holy shit that made me bust out loud haha
This is a true rock concert, one that made the history books.
Watch the song played immediately after this one, creeping death Moscow, the bass and drums interlude is epic
I remember being 17, padding up, listening to this. Then coach sends you out on kickoff...
I was ready to run through 3 people at a time
I like how calm the first reaction to the crowd size was, and then, how it grew over time as the realization sets in.
I been in mosh pits and came out my tank top was all out one arm my pants falling down hair a mess drenched in sweat beer and soda 🤣🤣🤣 shit gets wild...but when the music is going and you in the crowd it’s just an epic feeling🙌🏼
Next door neighbor got his ass handed to him in a mosh pit. His wife had to help him. He ended up in jail in pink tights lmao
METALLICA was my very 1st concert!! One of my favorite memories!! 🤘🖤
“This a situation right here” lol! Great line!!
I don’t think any band can work a crowd into a frenzy like Metallica! Those hard drums and guitar- it’s amazing. When rock or hard rock was super popular- amazing times!
One of the BEST examples of POPULARITY ever recorded. Great video for people to see and hear. Awesome Post.
Metallica is timeless. I mean how many other bands can actually say that they held a concert so big that their security was the literal Soviet Army. This concert is on record as the 3rd largest concert in recorded history.
Back when concerts were legendary. These guys, Queen and Rammstein my all time favorites.
the sheer size of the crowd is bananas, but what is also crazy is just how close those helicopters were flying above the crowd! nuts! 😮
This was the largest EVER live concert to date…1.7 MILLION people. Think about this…this would be THE ENTIRE population of Philly..
Metallica's energy is like no other..one of the best bands I've seen live. You definitely have to see them live! If my friends didn't leave bleeding they didn't have a good time 🤣🤟🔥
They had the helicopters flying above to make sure the air is flowing. But I believe 53 people died at the show. Maybe it was 57 I don’t know. But it was over 50.
This concert was a shit show. The military were kicking the shit outta people, girls were getting raped, completely out of control. I've had my nose broken in a hardcore pit but no way I'd ever wanna be in that crowd.
@@deathcore4180 Never heard of women being raped at this concert. Could you link sources?
I was in Moscow that week... people were sleeping in tents in the parks for this concert... not enough hotel rooms and they swarmed off trains the day of... crazy energy.
Hey guys. Love your reaction. Best concert I ever was at Thanks for the wonderful memories Peace Faith and Love. Have a great day
1.6 million people showed up to see American metal bands in the USSR....how sick is that?! 🤘🏻🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸
Sorry to say but AC/DC was the headline band
Next Metallica reaction " Creeping Death" from the same '91' concert in Moscow!!
they already did two weeks ago
@@synystera Damn i thought so, but wasn't quite sure.
Greetings from Scotland! Those were the days! 30 years ago and still impressive to see all those people! :) Wall to wall humans as far as the eye could see! The really lucky ones were the people in the 'copters! WOW!
Love the topic, made me a fan. Sharing with all friends. Keep it going strong
1.6 million people before they stopped counting
Creeping Death from the same show is immense 🤘
My favorite song off that album
@@rickross3279 I love the whole album so much! It’s one of my all time favourites hard to pick just one song 🙂
In the eighty's and ninetys I was a crew member setting up stages for van Halen Metallica guns and roses skid row Pantera Phil Collins. Eddie money to name a few mostly in Florida when they had concerts just before Metallica went to Russia to do this concert. Eddie van Halen had retired to the north west and I switched to country bands Charlie Daniels Amy grant.barbera mandrell and other artist. I've had the privilege of serving great artist in. My career watching you and your wife react to these bands is refreshing it makes me laugh to watch how astounded you get with each performance but you also keep it real.kudos to you.much love.enjoy your reactions and input🏴☠️💖
And eyyyyy...they won a grammy for this album too!!!
There are no perms in this band, it's all natural. Check out creeping death from the same show, 1.6 m people shouting DIE is something to behold x
Check out Metallica Battery live in Seattle 1989! Plus Pantera also performed at the Moscow concert, check out Domination!
Anything from Seattle '89 or Cunning Stunts really
I heard that the back of the crowd were in another time zone 😜thanks for reacting. You guys are beautiful.
Love your guys reaction just a historic song at a historic moment. Best thing is this is just as good if not better then studio version. Riffs and energy such a historic song
Who else wants to hear an Asia cover of the song now? 🙋🏼♂️
What? No. She's cool. But no.
I just wanna jump off stage and go crowd surfing. "Jesus take the wheel!" So many bands these days cut their live songs short or take solo's out because the musicians can't actually play them. Metallica is the real deal. Brother Kirk is on a completely different level.
Legend is that if you crowd surfed there, you’d end up in Ukraine
Bro u crowd surf that crowd you’d need a passport when u was done
Ohhhh hell yeaaaaa ,I've seen this a few times man,and shit goose bumps ,tears of joy body moving still, absolutely love this, love your guys energy thankyou 🤘
I’m so glad Metallica was my first concert I got to go too! Me and my parents got separated but some people looked out for me making sure I was okay felt like family 🥺 ugh the Atmosphere of the concert was great ❤️❤️
When I saw the military men join into the fun that’s when I knew we had won the Cold War
Metallica is and always will be rock gods and is one of my all time favorite bands! I loved watching y’all get initiated into the world of Metallica
OMFG!!!! I have never seen this before😱 AMAZING. I got chills just watching ALL those people jumping up and down....wow!!! And the helicopter... Smh crazy!
This is from Monsters of rock and there were also AC/DC, Pantera, The Black crowes, Motley Crue and Queensryche. It took place at Tushino Airfield in Moscow. Among the huge crowd there were only 54 casualties.
I was 19 in 1991...Metallica was huge, but grunge bands like pearl jam and nirvana changed the face of Rock and opened doors that Metallica couldn't lock out. This album made them peak..
The Black Album and Master of Puppets are Metallicas peak. Everything since has been found wanting.
Take a minute to think that there was NOTHING stopping 1 million+ people from rushing onstage lmao.
Ikr!Looks like the military was partying right along with them
Love you two wow reacting to this incredible band and their fans
Amazing I've never seen this concert!
Metallica 30 years ago was great and all, but should check out their more recent performances as well. They’re still amazing 30 years later.
beyonce never did that
This was a free concert ❤️
Standing in the crowd with your brothers is love.
This is why people should diversify in their music, from an early age I have listened to Blues music and Bluegrass. It changed the way I look at music today.
I've always thought of Matalica as part of a trinity of the best '70s-'80s rock bands with Queen & AC/DC
For the 80's, I would have to include Def Leppard on the list.
Love this songs it's a child's lullaby. That concert was put together to celebrate peace and the fall of the wall. I think something like 1.5 m peeps
They played in front of nearly 2 million people. It was one of the largest concert crowds in history.
#1 on my workout mix. It’s a fact that you lift harder while listening to this song. 😉
Love your reaction. 🙌🏼
saw metallica in 1989 in philly during the monsters of rock conert best concert ever 12 hours of great music
With regard to the crowd, that's called "The Ocean" and Led Zeppelin wrote a whole song about it.
Battery - Seattle ‘89. That live performance is the definition of FLOORING IT!!!
They usually open with that song. So seeing them live is epic. Ive only seen them on vhs and i get drained. Love it
I was in high school in 91. Was 17. Metallica back then was awesome! And still is.
I jjust turned 30 in October 1991 baby here, thank god to my parents growing up with the 80’s, I absolutely love the 80’s. These are the crowds I want today, no cell phones, just in the moment and having a good ass time. I know people think it’s just a lot of fast and loud music, but the lyrics can be deep too.
They were massive. I was a sophomore in high school and I was a Gangsta Rap / Rap / Hip Hop guy but I jammed to some Metallic as well.! The energy in this video is crazy. Roomer is 1.6 million people but the drummer Lars said it was about 1/2 million in an interview I saw. Still, 500,000 people at a concert is about 5 to 10 times as big as a Normal massive concert! Great review guys!
You just served yourself a sub! This is the best and most authentic reaction I have ever seen!
Yes Exactly! Love you guys!
This song was playing on MTV when my mom gave birth to me. They were not shocked I grew up a metal head haha!
They stopped counting at 1.6 million. There is acutely over 3 million people at this concert. It was the first one after the Berlin wall fell. It was awesome !!😳😈😈😝😁
I love the head going around. Lol. I love this song Everytime it used to play in the clubs my friends would say you can't dance to this. We just jumped up and down. Great times in 90s. Didn't USSR break up then? I graduated that year.
The song that i love to jam with fellow bandmates back in the 90s 🤟🏼💜
I seen them when they are just 20 and a little tiny bar in New Jersey. To see them in front of almost two million people is unbelievable considering there was only maybe 50 to 60 people in the little bar.
I love the way both y'all scrunch your faces during the solos.
1.6 million people was the record at the time but this concert has been suppressed twice by concerts in Brazil
This was just after the fall of the USSR and this concert was at one of the largest active Air Force bases, thus the military aircraft seen flying in and out, 4th largest concert in history 1.4M - 1.6M+, crazy! did you see all the towers circling the main stage? they all had speakers wired to the main stage to surround the crowd in music
I have been to 5 of their concerts by far the best outdoor group in my opinion.
In September 1991, only a few days after the August Putsch failed, 1.6 million rock music fans converged in Moscow to enjoy the first open-air rock concert, as part of the Monsters of Rock
The historical significance of this concert is huge. The Soviet Union finally collapsed, the Berlin Wall came down and millions were freed from a strict communist regime. This was a free concert with a lot of bands and it was the first time Western Bands had been allowed there
They do have a video of this whole concert
I got one of their guitar picks and two beach balls from the 2009 concert
I wrote a paper on this event & the #1 event, as far as crowd size. 1.6 million is a definite number at this event in Moscow. Crowd scan confirmed that but said there were most likely more up to 1.8 million as a ceiling. This is the 3rd biggest crowd for an open air concert in the world ever. #1 is Rod Stewart in Rio, a free concert celebrating new years in 1994. 3.5 million people. Look up the aerial photos of that...it is mind boggling. #2 was also in Russia with 3.5 million people. A French composer named Jean Michel-Jarre. I don't know much about that event as I do this one in your reaction video & the Rod Stewart show in Rio. The full event was on the Monsters of Rock tour. This event was called 'For Those About to Rock: Monsters in Moscow' featuring Metallica, AC/DC, Pantera, The Black Crowes & a hard rock Russian folk band called E.S.T. that was pretty popular globally in the late 80's & 90's. Sadly, 53 people died that day at the event. Mostly, so they said, from drug overdose. This event was 3 months before the sickle & hammer flag was lowered from the Kremlin for the last time. Replaced by the 3 color flag. Marking the final end of the USSR, or Soviet Russia. So awesome that you did a reaction to a vid from this event. Sorry for droning on...Just passing some knowledge. Love your stuff!!!
The energy though, 100% worth it, I would have loved to be there!
Legend has it some of those people are still looking for their cars today. 🤘
Love from Adelaide Australia, I have a Metallica tattoo on my Arm. Love your channel 😍
