Thin Lizzy was an Irish rock band and Metallica's late bassist Cliff Burton was a huge fan of their bassist/ vocalist Phil Lynott (Both Burton and Lynott died in 1986 - Lynott from organ failure... Burton in a tour bus accident) So, Metallica honored Cliff Burton and Phil Lynott by covering one of their early hits from 1973 - 'Whiskey in the jar'... which Lynott composed and used the lyrics of an old Irish drinking song. Megadeth also covered a Thin Lizzy song - 'Cold sweat'. Thin Lizzy was best known for their 1976 album 'Jailbreak'... and the classic rock singles - 'The boys are back in town'... and 'Jailbreak'... Their twin lead guitar sound by guitarists Scott Gorham and Brian Robertson were a huge influence on bands like Megadeth, Iron Maiden, Def Leppard, etc.
When I last seen Megadeth Newstead opened for them and joined them for Cold Sweat along with Chad Gray, Slash, Zack Wylde, David Draiman, Vinnie Paul. Cool to see so many things connected.
@tiras81 yes, all covers. One disk was old songs that had appeared as B sides and the songs from Garage Days Revisited and Garage Days Re-Revisited (The $5.98 EP - Do Not Pay More!). The other disk was all new covers recorded specifically for Garage Inc. There is some great stuff on that set. The Prince and Helpless are some of my favorite songs by any band.
After seeing them live 15 times (in the pit) and my 16th the finally played this. This is a very old Irish drinking song. Many bands have covered it. Thin Lizzy has a great version. 🤘
This song is at least 150 to 200 years old. It's an Irish folk song, No one claims ownership, and it has been covered by lots of bands of lots of different genres.
*This was on MetallicA's 2-CD-album full of Cover-versions called "GARAGE INC.", which was released in November 1998. They were inspired by THIN LIZZY's [ Irish Rock band formed in Dublin in 1969 ] version, which was released in November 1972.* ⬅🎸🥁🎸🎵💿🔊❤🔥😈🔥
This is a very old Irish folk song. This is a cover of the Thin Lizzy version. I believe this song is about alcoholism and physical abuse. Just my interpreting.
I never liked Metallica growing up in the 90s an 00s, but now that they show "where their songs was played at", I really have a new respect for that band ;) they finally have some self irony :)
Metallica is the Master of…Covers. Their album Garage, Inc. is a compilation of past covers they did and brand new ones they recorded for that album. You should pick a song of that album and compare it to the original. It’s a rabbit hole worth going down.
I grew up with this song 1970s only it was by the Irish band thin lizzy personally my favourite and it’s done in old English style lyrics - worth checking . The setting for this Metallica version just doesn’t do it for me .
Those words/letters dont really mean anything lol, some singers are gifted with so much talent that they are able to fill in those spaces in the verses just by the sound of the voice, like Jim Morrison in Roadhouse Blues by The Doors, or Kurt Cobain singing; What else should I write? I dont have to write, in All Apologies by Nirvana
In the 90's, Metallica went from a bada++ thrash metal band to playing 70's rock and 90's grunge... making videos w/ p++n stars and a lesbian sorority house party... Although it was admirable that they covered a Thin Lizzy song as a tribute to the late bassist/ vocalist Phil Lynott... this was not the Metallica fans like me grew up listening to... From long hair and headbanging, to haircuts and bopping... It was beyond disappointing, especially after the 'Load' and 'Reload' albums... and making country songs & covering Bob Seger and Lynyrd Skynyrd... (Nothing against those bands) ... James Hetfield of Metallica claimed that they could do anything they wanted cos they were "honest and selfish..." Fans at the time dubbed them 'Alternica' in the 90's.
Music videos are the worst way to listen to songs. They often have nothing to do with the lyrics. Then people get easily confused rather than just soaking in the song within your brain without needing to visually see something. They taint songs for me.
I was in 7th grade when this came out and been a Metallica fan for years, and I never wanted to be a rock/metal star more when I seen this. The irony of this video though is they are all doing the kind of things Dave was kicked out of Metallica for. Its cool if they do it but not him, lol. (I know its a video its different but still funny)
Never liked this version as it was a terrible choice by Metallica. They should have done something by Lizzy that would have fitted their sound better......Thunder and Lightning or Killer on the Loose would have been much better choices.
It's an Irish drinking song. Yes, there is a story in there, but it's also a bunch of gibberish that sounds cool.
Best explanation of this song, EVER. lmao. Such a legendary tune.
That isn't Gibberish. It's Gaelic. Ireland's Native language.

Their late bassist cliff Burton Was a big Thin Lizzy fan thats why they covered it
One of my favorite Metallica songs.
Metallicas covers are so good. they always do a great job.
They walk a fine line of making them their own while also staying true to the original... if that makes any sense.
if i remebmer correctly the whole Garage inc album is all covers
It was a double disc release, the first was all covers, and the second disc was rarities and b-sides

No love for Last Caress/Green Hell .
@@oscardiggs246the Prince is my fav. That song is sick.
You now have to do their cover of So What originally recorded by Anti-Nowhere League.
Lol I remember when they played it live on MTV.
Haha I’m sure the algorithm would love that.
One of those songs I can never play loud enough.
Let's not forget "The Dubliners" whose covered loathes of Irish folk songs. First time I ever heard this song was through them.
After seeing them live 15 times (in the pit) and my 16th the finally played this. This is a very old Irish drinking song. Many bands have covered it. Thin Lizzy has a great version. 🤘
It's an old Irish drinking song that Thin Lizzy covered and things went from there

Metallica is the best
I’ve been waiting for this one!!!
I suggest you also react to the live version of this song in 2019 at Slane Castle in Ireland.
This is a very old Irish folk song. This is a cover of the Thin Lizzy version. I believe this song is about alcoholism and physical abuse. Just my interpreting.
You should totally react to the Thin Lizzy version!!!!
I never went to college either, I did however go to many frat/sorority parties... Good times.
This was one of the first videos I watched when I first got into them…
I had questions 😂
Kirk is too damn yummy for words
I never liked Metallica growing up in the 90s an 00s, but now that they show "where their songs was played at", I really have a new respect for that band ;) they finally have some self irony :)
Its an old irish folk song, the lyrics in the end are a little bit different but thats it. We learned it at school, in Germany, yes sir!
Un fin de semana normal aquí en México 😂❤
Jeez, I have a vague memory of a party similar to this back in the seventies. Then again, most of the seventies are still kind of a blur. 😁
Hi from Australia, I love this song, plus I love your hair style ❤
I would want that to be my house because it means Metallica is playing at my house...
Please react. Mettalica funeral for a friend honoring the elton john. Washington dc 2024 live.
You should listen to Darby O'gill live. A true Irish band.
I recommend giving Thin Lizzies version a try.
Not the nicest video Metallica ever made, but the cover sounds. 🔊 🎉 Robbie Williams is similar with his video on Come Undone.
Get well soon RayRay. BTW. your voice sounds even sexier when you are sick 😄
The reason for them covering it likely has more to do with the fact that Thin Lizzy covered it in 1972 than it being originally an Irish folk song...

Wish they did garage inc 2.0
I play this song every st Patrick's Day
Whack for my daddy o means have a drink on my dad. Worth remembering that the song is trad Irish so probably translated from Gaelic 😀
6:34 me too man! 🙌
Cool cover, I too didn't understand the video except its a party and getting drunk
If you haven’t yet you should watch anesthesia pulling teeth live at the metro 1983 it’s a really cool bass solo
It's for Gary Moore and metallica make it cover
Avenged Sevenfold - God Hates Us live at RockAM if you like avenged sevenfold this is one of their best live performances ever !!
You should react to their cover of turn the page by bob segar
It's making you think they're intoxicated? well it's an Irish song, so yes, most likely not sober.
It's a drinking song, you get sloshed on Whiskey and sing it with your friends.
This reminds me that I like the Thin Lizzy version much better.
I prefer the live versions
Ray, u would have enjoyed Alcoholica playing this live in Meath, Ireland on 06/08/19.
Yee da maa da maa doo. whiskey in the jar
Cool. :)
Thin Lizzy wasn't the original to, but better. ❤
🤘
Please react to Inamorata from their latest album
Whiskey in the jar = moonshine???? 😂
Technically, yeah. Moonshine is just colorless whiskey. Whiskey gets its color from the barrels it's stored in.
According to research filler nonsense lyrics are common in Irish folk songs
I grew up with this song 1970s only it was by the Irish band thin lizzy personally my favourite and it’s done in old English style lyrics - worth checking . The setting for this Metallica version just doesn’t do it for me .
Just ignore the video on this one. Just a good Irish Drinking song
YAY good choice wack for me daddy o fight for my father's belief try the Rum Jacks version makes more sense
please next reaction Burgerkill "Killchestra" An Elegy
the video is total debauchery but i like it

Friggin Molly man, every time, Molly.
The video has never made sense to me either.
Hello, plis review:

Plis plis ❤❤
react to versión original thin lizzy

Old Irish
The song uses Irish jibberish just because it sounds good...many Irish songs do. Oh, and that's not a frat party, it's a lesbian hoe-down.
I have seen this video more times than is possible to count and I never noticed the only men in the video are the band. All because of your comment.
these videos do not literally represent the song. It never was. Theyre creative collaborations with directors.

The original versión ITS BY thin lizzy...
Thin Lizzy also covered the song it's an old Irish folk song.
I like their cover, but the original is way better.
The original is a cover too.

Why did you spell out daddy? You read every single nonsensical word but spelled out daddy like you didn't know how to pronounce it. That was weird.
