Oh my God I've wondered the same thing. They have influenced so many musicians, and were definitely ahead of their time when you listen to their albums. And yes the rock and roll Hall of Fame is a joke.
Yeah, as has been pointed out, Kay didn't actually write those lyrics, but he is, however, very proud to count himself and the band as hard rock and heavy metal pioneers. Because that is the genre he has always, and rightly so, considered Steppenwolf belonging to.
Great song by a very early hard rock group. A dear late fiend of mine was an Army Ranger LRRP during the Vietnam war. After he was back in civilian life and this song and others like it came on the radio he would tell us the helicopter crews ferrying his group into the back country would have Steppenwolf blaring inside the helicopter with everyone on high alert. It was subtle but we could see him stiffen up a bit when recounting that experience.
John Kay, the one with the long hair and the mustache in the pictures, LOL, wrote and sang this classic with a lot of style. This song is where the phrase "Heavy Metal" was first used in a song, so that makes it historically significant. Speaking of riding motorcycles, this song was also used as the title music over the credits in the movie Easy Rider, which is exactly the scenario you were describing, except the boys in the movie were going from LA Ca. to NOLA. You need to see the movie "EASY RIDER" TONIGHT!!!
While I was waiting for the bus to go home last week an elderly, grizzled, tired, and disheveled looking gentleman approached me, and asked if I had $.60 for bus fare (senior fare.) I did, so I gave it to him. He sat down on the bench next to me, leaned back, and closed his eyes. After a moment he said, "Will you do one more thing for an old man?" "Sure," I replied. "Will you play 'Born to be Wild' for me?" "By Steppenwolf?" I asked in surprise. "Yes, ma'am, that's the one." So, I pulled up Spotify, and played it for him. I dunno why, but it made me so happy. :)
What a touching, unexpectedly human moment. I wonder if it was his way of telling the world - and reminding himself - that he wasn’t always elderly, grizzled, tired, and disheveled. Maybe disheveled, if he related to this song. By the way, your description of him and the encounter was very well written.
I have always been convinced this song is where the term "heavy metal" came from. "Heavy metal thunder, and the feelin' that I'm under". This is from 1968 and 1970 has often been referred to as "The Birth of Heavy Metal"!!?? So they needed a term and Steppenwolf had already used it.
I remember when this came out , I was 9 years old back in the middle 60's . They also sang "Magic Carpet Ride" I still love to listen to their hits. They were a great band!!!"❤ Went you get your motor running you don't care were it takes you!!
I was 10 when this came out, but it stuck in my head all these years. My dad loved this song, always turned it up when it was on the radio. Thanks for checking out y’all
That soundtrack kicks ass! I Wasn’t Born to Follow by Byrds is so mellow and the you’ve got The Pusher. That movie came out when I was in high school and have been riding Harleys ever since.
Asia & BJ, recommend "Rock Me" for your 3rd Steppenwolf song! “Born To Be Wild” is an iconic song, especially when used in the 1969, 2 Academy award winning movie “Easy Rider”.
When I DJ'ed parties, I would play this when the dance floor was packed. When it would get to the lyrics "Born To Be Wild", I would drop the music for a second so the crowd could hear them yelling it. It was always fun.
For what it's worth - I don't know if you've ridden or not, But Harley Davidson offers classes for learning to ride. They supply the bikes to learn on. 'Not all that expensive. And after you've gone through their course, you only have to pass the written exam at the DMV. They'll let you waive the physical driving test, cause Harley vouches for you. Check 'em out online. Peace -
We've started every road trip for the past 30 years to this song. It starts as we're pulling out of the driveway. Can't beat the vibe for hitting the road!
The movie "Easy Rider" is a classic and one that would give you a glimpse into the era/ times as well as some legendary actors and classic music. It's deep. Then on the other end of the continuum, there is the pure comedy drama, "Road hogs" starring the next generation, Tim Allen, Martin Lawrence and John Travolta.👍🤣 Good ones for your movie review night.😉💕

John Kay, the lead singer, was and is a BAD DUDE. You would not want to cross that guy, that's for sure. He is The Steppenwolf! He actually turned out to be a great man. Helping animals and indigenous people around the world. Nice to see The Steppenwolf turn out to be The Man!
This song in Easy Rider was about a couple of motorcycle riders traveling across the southwest living a hippie lifestyle. It featured Peter Fonda, Dennis Hopper, and Jack Nicholson traveling to New Orleans for Mardi Gras.
Please react to "For Ladies Only" By Steppenwolf also "Snow Blind Friend" -by Steppenwolf. They had so many great songs. Another is "Monster" by Steppenwolf. This song is as relevant today as it was back in the 1960s.
We did that. Decided to go to Niagara Falls on the Canada side. Left there, drove across the northern states, and down to the Grand Canyon. Then drove across the southern states, and back home in NC. We made pit stops along the way. It was a blast!
Great choice, iconic song. I was lucky enough to see them live at a little club in Tempe AZ called Doolies, about 15 ft from the stage drinkin' a cold one. It was great. Thanks for the react. This was late 70's early 80's
Hey Asia and BJ - my dad was the second bass player for the band. He's in most of these band pics.Thx for the reaction! If you do react to the Pusher by them make sure to also listen to Nina Simone version too. Written by Hoyt Axton.
When this came out I lived with a bunch of bikers and this song would get us all fired up and we would go jump on our bikes. Truly inspirational. LOVE the song. Truly a classic.
This song was played in every "Biker Bar" from Seattle to Florida in 1968. It was the anthem of most outlaw Biker clubs, like the Hell's Angles, and all of the rest. "Get your motor runnin,' head out on the Highway..."

Steppenwolf The Pusher one of my all time favorites from them ! So much meaning for people on the streets ☹
From back in the day. ,enjoyed
This was my first concert at 6 years old my dad and mom didn't have a sitter so they took me with them was on the street in cowtown fort worth back in the late 80s.
Theres no way I could not give the greatest band ever my thumbs up.
