I had multiple high vertical ridges on all my finger nails. My doctor said it's just age related (that same old excuse given to women for sooo many things). I've tried everything. Keto diet some improvement as it stopped nails from splitting. Daily massage with petroleum jelly, no improvement at all. More fruit and sun, daily supplement blah blah blah. Three daily massage with avocado oil, again stops brittleness but not the ridging. Mountains of handcreams later, I noticed an improvement to my right hand nails and not so pronounced ridging on my left hand. It's taken me two months to finally realise it was a pot of Lacura avocado bright eyes sleeping mask with retinol which I was using up on my nails. I've just come back to finish the pot and within two day the ridges are much reduced on 3 fingers and the remaining 7 finger nail ridges have gone and are smooth. It's the magic I've been searching for.
Oh dear. Living on a mostly protein diet ((REALLY low carbs)) supplementing with zinc and eating yeast, adding B's as I go along. Got "ordered" to stop taking D3 because my levels were 150 (top safe AMA limit is 100, normal is 50) and am about to be re tested in the next week. I have a few dark lines (and the medics dismiss these), ridged (lengthwise, not cross), flaky, flabby nails. The ridges are quite prominent. I also have HCV (50 years damage to my liver), a leaky gut, and osteoporosis. They turn blue when the wildfire smoke settles in but pink up again when the air clears. That's 1 - 4 - 5 - 14. I am NOT anemic, I eat lots of cheese at the moment, live on grass fed beef and greens, supplement magnesium... And never put chemical goo on my nails to make them look pretty. Would love to deal with those dark lines, though. They only showed up in the past year.
Are you taking Vitamin K2 and Magnesium with the D3? If not you could have calcium settle in your joints and other soft tissues and also form kidney stones.
@@tomunderwood4283 YES. And I do have a tendency to form "gravel" or "sand". Less concerned about it settling in my joints. BUT I don't supplement calcium. I eat cheese because milk calcium is more bio-available than the stuff in pills and capsules, tastes good and has oils and protein with it. I eat the equivalent of three cups of kale (as a powder in a smoothie) so I don't supplement K2, and Magnesium cit is part of that smoothie. I was tested for Vit D blood levels. Three months ago it tested to "150" on a scale where "50" was normal and "100" was max. The medics went crazy and I got the lecture about unsafe levels of Vit D from no less that THREE people in the office. Scare stories, mostly, about kidney function and I don't know what all -- I stopped listening. The same Medics don't seem to really care about the condition of my liver. Years ago my dermatologist looked at my nails and said the reason I have pimple like spots on my nails was because I have psoriasis. I haven't had a bad outbreak in years.
Thank you for this. I used to have GREAT nails, but the past 2-3 years they split, break, chip, etc. if I even LOOK at them. It’s so annoying! I also have vertical lines on both thumbs.

Yet the half moons are still gone and I know so many others with the same issue. Would love some insight on why that may be?
Luckily I don't have any of these nail bed symptoms, yet I have been on a high carb, very low protein raw diet for 20 years (91 carb/5 pro/4 fat). In fact my nails are very strong and smooth, and I also haven't suffered a cold or flu or ear wax, foul odors, pimples, itch, waking up tired and so much more that strangers around me suffer, for that time s well. This is what we should be learning in school in biology class. It’s more interesting than all the memorizing we did for stuff that we don’t even remember now.
Thanks a lot! I always knew that finger nails tell me what's wrong in my body but I never found one who could explain my vertical rills. Now I know! Should be low protein and/or low iron!
Toenails spend a lot of time in shoes and socks, don't get much air circulation, damp environment. Ideal perhaps for a low level fungal infection. Soaking my toes in apple cider vinegar and a couple drops of tea tree oil for 15 minutes once in a while has helped a lot.
Going completely without carbs, alcohol, and fermented foods for 3 months cured my foot issues. Fungus can hang on there a long time. Can speed this up my drinking clove with black coffee, grounds and all best, once a day to clear fungus out of digestive tract as that effects feet before hands perhaps because they stay damp all the time.
I have the vertical lines but eat plenty of meat and take good quality vitamin supplements. My nails grow profusely fast, needing trimming twice a week! I'm keto most of the week. I'm guessing the vertical lines are not serious?
No answer for you here. Yes, I have always had vertical ridges; my nails are strong, grow well, etc. I have excellent nutrition & diet, normal BMI, etc. My nails apparently simply grow that way.
Thankyou so much for information , after a car acidente wich provoque lot of stress and COVID-19 ,horizontal lines start to apears in my nails and now I 'm experience a massive fall of hair. To fight those situations my body need reposition of vitamines and mineral I guess.
Hi: I wish Dr. Berg had discussed "splinter hemorrhages" in the nail --- they look like small black lines like a extra thin strand of black thread. What causes those lines? Thank you in advance 😉
address nails that curl downward toward the finger tip and not very strong but not chipping and not brittle color normal looks healthy no other signs. Thankyou Dr Berg
Came here for the last symptom of vertical ridges. In another berg video he also included checking for thyroid problems and lack of iodine from lack of vegetables.
My foot nails are white and v/ridges plus fungus , bruises, swollen. My hand nails leaving the nail bed. Plus i have burning feet, tingling, pin n needles, right arm numb. Twitching in fingers day nnight. Diabetes is under control. Lived on my own but can't continue to my Job. Due to these kinda things. But still learning how to get rid of until I m breathing.
Hello Dr. Berg! Thanks for this video. I have a vertical discoloration in my nail, light gray. I have been taking metformin for my PCOS and I believe it is responsible for blocking the absorption of Vit B12. Also, I seldom get the morning sunlight because I work a graveyard shift. I am kind of worried because I have read over the internet that this might be a serious medical condition that needs immediate attention. Please help me with what to do. Thank you very much
I have vertical lines on my nails (age 50) and I eat a very high protein low carb diet heavy in red meat. My b12 is high and my iron is in the normal range. I’ve heard other docs say age. I guess that’s it if those other things are in check? But I’ve had vertical lines since I can remember.

Only have the last one, those vertical lines but they're not very visible. Started a higher protein intake because of workouts, we'll see in a couple of months if it goes away
Hey Dr.Berg I have a question. I recently started a diet and I noticed a slight discolored line in my thumb. I know you said it's a lack of protein and or vitamin B12. How long does it take for that line to go away?
I have 2 finger nails with a white speck on them but I have been on keto for almost 2 years. for one year I did OMAD until I started getting too thin now I do 2 meals but always KEto and always fasting for 18 to 20 hours so how could I be deficient in zync? I eat meat every day, sometimes this stuff confuses me or makes me doubt what I'm doing is working to fix underlying problems.
Hii dr berg I had an stool test of my child after chronic diarrhea which show - Pus cells : 4-5 hpf Ephitelial cells: 2-3 hpf Bacteria : positive I also did a ct scan but noting found Can you guess the problem ?

Thanks a lot! I always knew that finger nails tell me what's wrong in my body but I never found one who could explain my vertical rills.
Now I know! Should be low protein and/or low iron!
Is this different for toenails? My fingernails look completely healthy, but my toenails are consistently worthy of being covered by socks!
LMFAO!!!!!!
I gotta use wire cutting pliers to cut my toe nails - and they fly like bullets.
🤣🤣🤣
What you recommend as per my condition, what vitamins have to take, whats lack in me and what is wrong with my body.
Kindly suggest something plzzz
I get those too
I think that was the first one. Discolouration in nails.
address nails that curl downward toward the finger tip and not very strong but not chipping and not brittle color normal looks healthy no other signs. Thankyou Dr Berg
Fabulous video does Dr Berg feel that this also pertains to toenails? Thank you for all of the great content you and your team do a great job
I'm glad you liked this post.
Came here for the last symptom of vertical ridges. In another berg video he also included checking for thyroid problems and lack of iodine from lack of vegetables.
We appreciate you. I’ve always have soft nails. I amp up on the supplements and veggies

Hello Dr. Thank you very much
This is so good to know!! Thank you so very much!!🤗😙
Most welcome!
I have vertical lines on my nails (age 50) and I eat a very high protein low carb diet heavy in red meat. My b12 is high and my iron is in the normal range. I’ve heard other docs say age. I guess that’s it if those other things are in check? But I’ve had vertical lines since I can remember.
Thanks again Doc 😊 I have been on keto now for 4 months and doing great . I'm pulling more toward ketovour .
I finally know about that damn black line on my nail for years!
Tqvm, i was told by suppliment salesperson that vertical line on nail means severe liver damaged.
Checking what advice this video can give, one my my nails is sensitive under pressure when I press on it. Very strange
Thank you for the insights! My nails are without lunula, would taking copper help? Could you make a video and elaborate more?
The tips of my fingernails are turning white. No spots. The white covers the tip of my fingernails. At least 8 of my nails
@72dee….me too! What is it? I’ve started using castor oil on the nails and then sleeping with gloves on and my nails are slowly going back to normal
This was so informative. Thanks so much !
Thank you for your kind and positive comment.
I just wanted to add your nail could be yellow from nail polish, or smoking too

Thank you for the video. I never thought your nail as a indicator of vitamin deficiency. 👍👍
Very glad to be of help.
I been looking for these answers from my Drs. for decades. Thank you very much. Probably too late for me though. I speculated about my health. Too bad I was right.
You nailed it Dr Eric
Thank you for the great information you give us!
Most welcome! Glad you found it useful!
Nail pitting is 😢missing sir
Only have the last one, those vertical lines but they're not very visible. Started a higher protein intake because of workouts, we'll see in a couple of months if it goes away
Have you checked Dr Berg’s videos on protein sources. Quite revealing.
Hey Dr.Berg I have a question. I recently started a diet and I noticed a slight discolored line in my thumb. I know you said it's a lack of protein and or vitamin B12. How long does it take for that line to go away?
Can you do an episode about yellowing armpits? Why do they turn yellow? What is a healthy deodorant to use? Is this a bad thing? Thanks!
Hello. Interesting. We will add this to our video suggestion list. Thanks.

What about the half moons on the thumb?
❤ this video is very useful. Thank you I need vitamins now lol
