Hydraulic to Electric Fan Conversion 01-04 Jeep Grand Cherokee 4.7L

  • Get rid of that hydraulic cooling fan and go electric. Used a fan from a 98 Jeep Grand Cherokee with a 5.9L. This Efan was only offered that one year with the 5.9L. Used a Flex-a-lite fan control and optional manual on and off switch. Using a 10ohm 100-watt wire wound resistor (to replace the solenoid) to keep the ECM/PCM happy, no engine service lite. I know the Efan I used is very rare but there are other fans that could be used like the Ford Taurus 3.8L, Lincoln Mark VIII, Mercury Villager, and some Volvo models.

You allways find that ingenious way of douing things...me...on the other hand...got tired of looking at my old hydraulic fan and it went to the trash..( with that stupid solenoid attached)...so..for weeks i had no choice but to buy a solenoid from ebay with the hardness for $140...until today after seeng your video...yep...you just save me that much...just bougth two of those resistors for $5.00...well...let me tell you that 12 blade fan from ford and clutch are douing their job ok...had to buy a new shroud that cover the fan and it came with an electric fan that will be rigged just like yours...and the three rows alluminum radiator from ebay its douing a great job...just a little wider than the original and it takes some adjustment...i used the same power steering pump by having the hose made...so far so good...cheers!

Thank you, it's kind of unlikely that it will kick into full unless it really heats up. You can check the fan's operation by unplugging the temp sensor between the alternator and the AC compressor, the fan should kick into high . If it does it is operating correctly. Nice. Thanks for this video. Love how clean your engine bay is. I bought an 04 with the 4.7L almost 3 weeks ago now. I have a crack in the radiator on the driver's side. The hydraulic fan has wetness in the center of the fan. The 5.9L Grands are rare here, but I did see that Flex-a-lite has a fan for our models. Really thinking about getting that for when I change out the radiator. Can't wait to get this done and hopefully I can figure out what's going on with my oil consumption. Hopefully when I take off the valve covers I can see what might be going on there along with the PCV valve mod you show on your other video. Thanks again.

@@JM-id8ft I did not get the flex a lite. After getting the radiator out and being up underneath, I found where a massive oil leak was happening which I thought was the rear main seal. Where it was parked, I didn't have the capacity to drop the trans. So I ended up replacing the radiator and putting back the power steering lines. Haven't had any issues since and it's been 7 months. But if I ever have radiator issues again, I want to change it to electric.

Not real familiar with the Chrysler setup, but most import cars set the fan temps at about 10 - 15 degrees above thermostat temp. The stat will keep the engine at 180 degrees even when you are on the highway on a cold day. Setting the fan at that temperature will make it run constantly (and unnecessarily) because the thermostat keeps the water at 180 - even if you have tons of cooling coming in from driving etc. Again just a thought :) Thanks for the content!

Excellent work that I will eventually follow for my WJ, but I want to comment on the efan controller install. I am using that exact same controller and water coolant temp sensor in my XJ to run the aux efan. First comment is that I am surprised you put the controller in a spot where it can be subjected to the elements. The electronics are potted and you sealed the connections to the high power wiring, but corrosion on the control terminals will eventually cause functionality issues.
The other comment is temperature sensor placement. When the thermostat is closed, there will be minimal coolant flow through the radiator causing a fair time lag for when the sensor feels a change in temperature. This is less of an issue when the min coolant temp set point is significantly above the thermostat opening point, but if trying to set the efan to control right at the thermostat opening temperature, this is a challenging location to use. The preferred location in this case is in coolant line running to the heater core. This hose sees a more constant flow of coolant coming off the motor, and is better suited for controlling the efan when running very close to the thermostat opening temperature.

Martinbuilt , I've just done a road trip from Ravensthorpe to Karratha in Western Australia - 2,092kms in 2 days , outside air temp went from 8c to 36c , summer is coming so 45c+ soon
Before I set off I did your solenoid mod (half turn in) this saved the motor from cooking
After I crossed the 26th parallel I had to turn off the aircon open the windows and put the heater fan on to keep the motor cool
It's the only Jeep in town , every other 4x4 is a Toyota Land Cruiser 79 series 4.5 V8 twin turbo diesel , but the base price is $80,000 AUD I paid $250 AUD for my WG in Jan
The fuel consumption rose with the solenoid mod from 8 litres per 100kms to 10.5 , but that's cheaper than a new motor

I did your ram air mod to my Dakota, havent done the hood seal yet.I used the existing air intake silencer, cut out the top, placed a K&N filter in the opening, made a metal bezel to secure it and reconstructed the bottom of the air intake silencer to replace the material I had to remove.Mine deviates from your design in that.mine still also draws air from the airbox as well.In my.application I think I will make a.steel plate for the underside of the hood that sizes it to the filter and put the foam on that for the seal.

Great video! Really thorough job! Lots of good info even if one is not doing this swap. Sad that we have to fool that way-too-complex ECM system. I'm remembering my 1978 Saab 99 Turbo that had two fans in front of the radiator (switched on ground side, left fan hot from key, right from battery, so you shut down when the fans cut in, and right fan blew cooling air over the turbo for a while). We know pumps & fans that push work better than those that pull. Is there space for a fan or fans in front of the radiator (out of full engine bay heat)? Just wondering. You did gain a great amount of engine bay space, making belt changes, etc. a lot easier. I really like that. If you did not change power steering pump, just blocked line to fan, would it run too much against its relief valve and overheat the fluid?

This particular fan came out of a 98 Jeep Grand Cherokee that is equipped with the 5.9 l engine unfortunately they made less than 15, 000 with the 5.9 so they are somewhat hard to find.

This is an educational video for sure, and it addresses what appears to be a widely experienced cooling system problem with Jeep WJ models. My 2004 WJ Overland was already converted to an electric fan of unknown origin before I purchased it, and when I recently bought a 2004 Laredo, overheating problems that started right away have forced me to have this same conversion done by a local shade tree mechanic out here in the sticks of the Third World.
For the Laredo, a Mercedes electric fan from an unknown model is inbound at this very moment from the junkyard, where the "consultants" would only confirm that the donor vehicle bore a 4-Matic emblem, which narrows it down to maybe twenty Mercedes models haha. Anyway, I'll watch the rest of this clip now, to note down any pointers that I can mention to the surgeons I engaged for a princely sum equivalent to $20 USD. What could possibly go wrong?

Fantastic video and I mean fantastic!! After doing some looking on-line I was sure I was going to be stuck with the Hydraulic setup because of the PCM issue or the power steering pump issue and your video completely puts faith that this won’t be a problem.
After a few months can you provide any update to how this went, any thing you feel you could have done different or even adjustments you made after the fact?

Thank you, no I couldn't be happier with this mod. Probably would have been nice if I could have found a more popular fan one that is more readily available instead of the one I used being that there's only fifteen thousand of these fans ever made. But I couldn't be happier with the performance this particular fan. Thanks again

Saw something extremely smart on this video that 99% of people skip over...solder the wire to the ring terminal!!! It cuts down on corrosion and cuts out contact issues through expansion and contraction...it's a Chrysler wire harness so ALWAYS ALWAYS ALWAYS solder!!!!

    Martin,
Was thinking of doing this on my 4.7l HO. I have a question however.
Do you think it is possible to run a mechanical fan off the 4.0l WJs?
I personally would rather have the cooling power of a mechanical fan and loose a little MPGs as I don't want to overheat the engine.
    Let me know your thoughts.

This is very interesting to me, I must be one of those few people who likes the hydro fan and how it works. What would be the main reason for doing this conversion? Enless it broke or failed. I’d say that at full speed the hydro fan can still move more air than the 5.9 fan (I have a 5.9 limited). Yea the hydro fan can act a little lethargic in stock form, it seems to give the bare minimum air requirement but in spite of that it’s never let my Jeep overheat in the most severe conditions. You cleverly showed how to turn up the solenoid too in the last video if you want to wake the fan up a bit and make it run cooler.

    • @martinbuilt
      @martinbuilt  4 роки тому +1

Even with the mod that I did to the solenoid, I would see temps at 215* plus and for me, that is to hi. I am trying to achieve the best performance not necessarily the best MPG. The engine will get it's best MPG at 204* that is what the PCM is trying to maintain but not doing a very good job at it.

Hi Martin, new question. The adapter you drilled from 1/8 to 1/4 npt, it has a small screw to ground it. I ordered the same adapter from Amazon. I notice when you checked it with your heat gun it didn't have the second wire coming from the ground point. Is it needed or not? I installed mine, and grounded it also, but didn't work. I'm thinking the sensor is bad because many other people left reviews saying the sensor didn't work for them, so I going today to the autoparts to find a "working" sensor. Thank you.

Martin I am in the process of doing this mod right now and just had a question. On your wiring diagram for the gamma switch, you have arrows on 3A and 3B that point outwards. Is that indicating that you are installing jumpers from 3B to 2B/4B? Or is that just indication of the switching mechanism? Also, did you tie 3B(12V switchable source) in with terminal 9 on the fan controller? Just want to make sure I'm not missing anything. Thank you in advance!

If you're able to hook it up hydraulically you still might be able to use the power steering pump. I could have retained the stock pump I just needed to change a few fittings to make it work but, opted to change the pump instead.

sorry to hear that, what brand radiator did you use? There are some questionable manufactures out there. I purchased an all-aluminum radiator that didn't even come close to fitting and then the one I got that was made by OSC fit and worked perfectly. Don't give up.

The radiator fit good, but I’ve been chasing leaks since I installed it.
Found it leaking the other day at the threaded plug just below the radiator cap. The o ring was broken. The car is the age when everything starts going bad it seems. Still runs great though.

Was there an issue with the hydraulic cooling fan, or was this simply to move away from that style-free up horsepower ? I've not found an issue with the hydraulic fans, unless the power steering system had issues or the wrong fluid was used in the system. Thanks for sharing this mod, especially the 10 ohm 100 watt resistor to keep the ECM happy! As always, your work, thought process and logic are well researched, well thought out, covering every possible outcome!

Yes the hydraulic cooling fan would not coolly engine to my liking. Even after I did the solenoid modification it would only get down to 210゚
With this electric fan I've got no problem keeping it at 185, 195 on the days when its a 108゚ ambient or more.
